Are the animals tortured before they are slaughtered?

Absolutely not ! With some pigs we do use waterboarding and sensory deprivation techniques previous to slaughtering them, but the cows do not require any special handling.

Where can I see one of the bags in person?

I don't have any of the items in stores and we're not big fans of folks coming to our home in San Antonio because of the weirdo factor. My sister, Patricia and her husband (my Chess and Scrabble nemesis), send out the leather from their place near Ft. Worth, Texas, but again, because of the weirdo factor they're not set up to show either. If it helps, everyone tells me that they look better in person.

Hello All, This is my second SB purchase. My first was the iPhone case ( you can read my review under that product) and now this great iPad sleeve. Both are in Chestnut. My iPhone review initially said I use a case over my iPhone but now I can use my iPhone as it was meant, without a case where I can enjoy the thin beauty of it. And now, I can also enjoy the thin beauty of my iPad without a bulky case as well. I do have an Apple Smart Cover ( as Dave has and shows in his video) covering only the screen because I want to be able stand it up while watching movies while also snapping it off at my leisure and it fits just perfectly. Even though this does not have an opening at the bottom like the gadget sleeve, if you want to charge your iPad while its still in the sleeve, just simply turn your iPad around where the charging will be on top. It's that simple. The quality of leather is just great. I initially got the iPhone case in tobacco but changed it for the chestnut. The chestnut color is stunning. It has an deep reddish burgundy-color to it when the sun hits it. All of the colors are nice but this is me, totally!! My next purchase will be the Round Satchel. I am very happy with SB. Thick and stiff!

This was one of my first Saddleback purchases because I was drooling over the bags but wasn't prepared to part with that kind of money just yet. I figured it would be a great way to get a first hand impression of this amazing leather that I had read so much about on the website. Besides, I was just picking up a Kindle Paperwhite and it looked like the Medium Gadget Sleeve could be a good fit for it.

So how about that leather? It's pretty remarkable, unlike any other leather I've come across. When I think of leather, I think of really smooth, shiny and soft surfaces on luxury items. Well, this leather is a little different. First of all, it's a lot thicker than the typical leather I've come across in the past. Second, the texture is definitely still soft and smooth, but the leather is almost as stiff as a plastic bottle! The thing is that this leather needs to be broken in by yourself - unlike most other leather products sold out there, Saddleback Leather doesn't break in any of their leather for you. This is part of what makes their products so incredibly durable, but it also means you have to work hard to personalize your leather to your liking (which is a BIG part of the fun!). This strategy works well for bags, wallets and all other things they sell, but it wouldn't have worked for leather boots. ;)

For a gadget sleeve, the original stiffness is actually great, and I wouldn't really want to try to break it in much as that would just make it sloppy and less protective. You have to be careful with what you try to fit into these sleeves, because if you fit something large in, the leather will start to give a little and fit around the new item, which could mean that what used to be a snug fit for your smaller items is now a very loose fit. Keep that in mind - in general, I would recommend that you have a clear purpose for the gadget sleeve before deciding to buy it (personally, I was just trying to come up with a reason to justify experiencing the leather first hand).

As for the fit for the Kindle Paperwhite, it's not a snug fit in terms of width or height, but the leather is stiff enough to not let the Kindle fall out accidentally even if I hold it upside down. It definitely works for my purposes: to protect it from scratches when carrying it in my briefcase. However, I'm not sure if I like that the distance between the inner and outer stitching is so wide. It adds more than 20 mm to the width of gadget it's containing, which seems a little unnecessary. It seems Dave decided to use the same stitching distance for almost all products, but in the case of the Medium Gadget Sleeve, a more narrow double stitching would have resulted in a sleeker sleeve while still offer more than reasonable protection.

All in all, I can definitely recommend this product even if it adds some (unnecessary) bulk to the gadget you're protecting. The leather is truly amazing and the smell is still noticeable after several months. It just oozes with quality and personality, which is a huge part of my affection with the Saddleback brand.

Note to Dave: a custom case for the Kindle would have been awesome. I love the feeling of opening a book when reading, so a case similar to the new iPad Mini but for the Kindle would have resulted in yet another (more frequently) returning customer. Thanks for considering it!

Kindle Fire HD

I asked Saddleback what would work for my Kindle Fire HD. Try the medium sleeve they replied, great advise. It fits like it was specifically made for it.

My two cents worth...

I have purchased several products over the years (currently on my 5th iPhone case, don't ask) all with ZERO complaints. The quality, durability, and craftsmanship are all top notch...

I would, however, like to see the cut out incorporated into all of the gadget sleeves, not just the small version. Would be handy to charge devices, obviously, but at the same time assist in getting devices out of the sleeve when the leather is still new and stiff.

As I stated, just my two cents. I highly recommend all of Daves products.

Outstanding for iphone 4s

I have used the small sleeve for my iphone 4 for a couple of weeks and it has already loosened to give the device a perfectly snug fit. My main fear was that the sleeve would damage the thin screen protector on my device, but this is not the case- the sleeve does not affect the screen protector whatsoever. The sleeve (with iphone) is small enough to fit in my pocket but usually I toss it into a compartment of my bag. Sure, the top of my iphone is slightly exposed, but this is definitely a classier and more adult option than the otterbox. Highly recommended!

Almost perfect

I bought the large tobacco brown sleeve for use with a 3rd gen iPad. Like everything made by Saddleback, this is full grain 5-6oz leather, and looks and smells amazing. For those who appreciate items that start look better over time and are practically indestructible, this is the iPad protection to get.

A few caveats to be aware of if you are considering buying: 1. This is not a slim case, laying empty it is slightly thicker than the newer model iPad. 2. This is not a light weight case, it actually might be heavier than the iPad you are looking to protect. 3. The neoprene insert at the bottom seems excessive to me. Most shocks will be absorbed by the absurdly think leather and pigskin lining. I think this just adds an unnecessary bulge to what would be a very streamlined look. 4. No matter how thick the leather is, this is an open top style case, so if it drops and hits on the top... good bye iPad.

If you can get over those points, this is a wonderful sleeve. After having it in my bag for the past month it has conformed around my ipad (with smart cover) like a glove and now slides into place with a satisfying 'thunk' and stays put. Really looking forward to seeing it develop a patina over the next few years.

Top notch quality leather!

Just received the medium gadget case in dark coffee brown for my slate iPad mini and I have to say that I'm really impressed with this case. I've been looking for a sleeve that would protect my mini when I travel which I can throw in my backpack. I love the mini and its form factor so I threw on a JoyFactory slim fit case that I picked up from Amazon to protect the back. The mini along with the back case fits perfectly fine and looks sweet in this leather sleeve and not to mention the fantastic smell. I'm already considering other products from Saddleback to add to my collection. Keep up the awesome work and thank you for beautiful sleeve!!!

I received this today in the mail, and WOW! I am amzed at the fit "right out of the box." I have an iPad Mini and a Smart Cover, and this fits realyl well, even with the smart cover on. The leather is of amazing quality! It's a sure-fit, so teh Mini is very secure, and it makes me feel much safer just walking around with it. It'll also make for a better time in my backpack that I use daily to and from work.

Perfect fit.

I received the medium gadget sleeve in chestnut as a Christmas gift. I wanted something sturdy and simple for my Nook. I was completely blown away by how sturdy this piece is. The nook fits perfectly and feels very secure. I love the chestnut color and the smell of the leather is out of this world. I am so happy to get this taste of Saddleback, and now I am seeing a lot of new things that I can get. Can't recommend it enough.
