Travel Tip for the Broke and Filthy Rich: Around the World Ep. 13

(Transcribed Text)

Hey, Dave from Saddleback Leather and I want to give you a tip on how to travel really cheaply. I did a whole trip through Eastern Europe and North Africa back in 2005 and it cost me around $3000. I stayed in a youth Hostel and you don’t have to be a youth to stay in it. It’s about $12/night and every cool town around the world will have a youth Hostel.

Go to hostels.com and you can book your place. What they do is, they’ll give you a locker to put your belongings in it. I took a suitcase and briefcase around Eastern Europe and it was amazing. Some places you’ll have your own room, while other places you might share with a family. If you’re a single gal, there will be women’s levels or men’s levels or mixed. And it’s a really cheap way to travel and meet interesting people.

You don’t have to be a rich person to travel around the world. And I’ve been accused of owning my own business and that’s why I travel but I say no, there are just really cheap ways to travel and ways to enjoy it.

Hi Dave. If you've looked at the "rivals" on your web page, you'll recognize right off one of the companies that competes with yours is Papworth Travel Goods of Cambridge, England. Yeah, I'm a Papworth. I still haven't bought one of their bags, but I have made 8-10 of my own. My favorite is a copy of a vintage mail bag. When I wear it around town or on trips, I'm everybody's envy. Congr ats on a great job. I'm saving my money to buy one of your bags, before I purchase one of the Papworths'. Go figure. Jim

Your videos and commentary are so crazy, I thought the bag was the only thing I was gonna like. You certainly add to the product. Keep up the good work! As I have recently discovered you i will be saving for a bag and getting one real soon. Like most I want a small set for travel but I will first start with the backpack, amazing piece of equipment! It's not a bag if you can't beat it to death and it gets better looking! Cheers!

Just received my iPad case. Was so impressed with the detail of leather, stitching and the CORNER protections. Had a previous "cover" which I thought was best but after a "drop" it shattered the glass because the corners were NOT protected. Researched everything and this IS the best. It's built for LIFE and I am so happy! Caldwell

Good tip. I stayed in a hostel when I visited Berlin. I'd do it again.

Dave, We like our Saddleback products - Briefcase and 2 Duffle Bags. Regarding strongest leathers, how does pigskin and kangaroo compare with ostrich and gator? I have read that ostrich and gator were very strong. Thanks, Rob

I am loosing my mind!!! Two weeks ago, while waiting on the bus, I noticed a young professional with one of your bags. I could not take my eyes off of it. I am a Introvert to the highest degree but I had to let him know how gorgeous his bag was. He thanked me with a smile on his face and said "it should last me a life time". For the past two weeks I have been kicking myself because I did not ask where he purchased it or the label. Tonight I decided to search the web to see if I could stumble across an image with the distinctive o-ring (top center) on the bag, After about 45 minutes or so HERE WE ARE (smile). Now that I have seen your entire product line, I am in love with about six items. Not sure where to start first because I want them all. I will try to pace myself... I was seriously thinking about purchasing one of those designer bags where i'd be paying for the name and not necessarily the quality of the product but I have changed my mind. You have a NEW customer for life...even though I have not purchased a bag yet LOL.

I keep in mind returning in the day there were hostels everywhere! It used to be definitely amazing to invest a few days where ever with all of your buddies on brief notice!

I agree whole-heartedly! Traveling inexpensively is not what most folk do or understand how to do. Like just about anything in life, you have to educate yourself on frugal travel. Whether it be TripAdvisor, Flyertalk, The Points Guy, etc... there are plenty of resources out there to plan your journeys far cheaper than you would ordinarily imagine. Great advice Dave.

Got your Ebay email yesterday. It was not only announcement of price change, but also a comprehensive business report. Really liked that email article that made feel that your company really cares about customers. I have also shared this email with my friends and told them how detailed this boss is.

I remember back in the day there were hostels everywhere! It used to be absolutely awesome to spend a weekend where ever with all of your friends on short notice! There were a few that we would frequent on Cape Cod, and we stayed in them until they tore them down! Which was about the time that we all started families, and for the best, we started Cape Cod rental properties instead! Sure do miss the cheap old days though!

Traveling like you've been traveling is something I've wanted to do for a long time. My wife and I hope to eventually. We're shooting for Ireland. I admire you getting out there and doing it and bringing your family. And although I don't own a Saddleback bag yet, thank you for making such a nice product. Planning on getting a pouch soon and I'm planning on loving it. Take care. Safe travels.

Hi Dave. We AGREE that if you know "how" , some travel can just be found for ridiculous low prices! Who gets the best meals, the best tables, etc. at the restaurant? The people who "know" and are close to the owners-that's who? Who gets the best deals when shopping for a car, for example? Why, thats easy, the ones who know the "rules" and who used to sell some of the cars themselves... See where where were going with this? If you read what a FORMER travel agent has to say about how to travel cheaply, think you might get some decent ideas? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PGCAaNYZEc Read on! Cheap Travel. Don't tell us it's not possible. Were with you, Dave-We "KNOW" to much! Regards! (Enjoy!)
