Fast Lane, What Not To Do: Around the World Ep. 4

(Transcribed Text)

Hey, it’s Dave here.

If you’re at all experienced with driving on the highway, or were taught well by your driving instructor or parents, you know not to drive in the fast lane unless you’re passing someone. In the U.S., it’s the left lane, and it’s meant for emergencies.

What if a husband is rushing his wife to the hospital because her water broke? Or if someone’s choking? Or if someone’s parent had a heart attack and he’s rushing to the hospital to say good-bye, but can’t because someone is in the fast lane driving slow? Many people think they have the right to drive there if they’re going the speed limit. (My sister Debbie was one of those people—wink, wink).

In some states, such as Texas, Tennessee, and Oregon, it’s actually illegal to drive in the left lane unless you’re passing. In Scotland, however, where we are now, you’re supposed to drive in the left lane, not the right, so just be aware of your surroundings...But back to my plea: If you know someone who’s inexperienced or simply naïve to the rules of the road, please pass this on. It’s so important that people know not to drive in the fast lane. It’ll make driving safer for all of us. Thanks!

I'm from Pennsylvania and it's illegal to drive more then 1 mile in the left lane. I mostly drive in the right side and am given a hard time by my coworkers for it... If I'm traveling it probably for work and well I'm paid by the hour. Why rush?

Oh, and I am 16, been driving for 2 years, and in that short amount of time practically teaching myself, I have learned all of that stuff. Common sense and common courtesy.

Unfortunately, Tennessee is in fact not like that. I have seen cop after cop after cop sticking only to the left lane going 5 miles under the speed limit, therefore making everyone else do the same fearing for getting a ticket if they pass. I always try to stick to this rule and if I am in the fast lane and I see someone approaching quickly, I always switch lanes. I mean, what is the reason not to? The car will pass, and then there will be an opening in case the car in the right lane is going super slow.

I'm from Minnesota and the left lane or "fast lane" is the lane you drive in if you know how to put the car over 65mph and are not an old lady or an old man with a hat. That aside I always stay aware of my surroundings for emergency vehicles and that sort. Its crazy that some states you can't drive in that lane except to pass, I didn't know that! My only question is how do you get anywhere (joking of course). I'll have to watch my driving if I'm ever in Texas. Look forward to more video's from around the world soon Dave!
