One solid outer piece of leather so it won't fall apart at the seams. Most things come apart at the seams and so the fewer the seams the longer it'll last. Of each hide, about 20% ends up on the floor in the form of small scraps. Some manufacturers quilt together notepad holders out of a dozen scrap pieces. We don't. We use large solid pieces on every design because that's quality.
100% Full Grain leather, not the weaker top grain, genuine or bonded leathers. The leather is smooth, but you won't be rubbing this one on your cheek. I laugh when I hear people talk about how soft and buttery their leather was when they first received it. Basically, the tannery weakened the leather by tumbling it for several extra hours to tear the fibers apart (softening it up). They take years of life out of the leather when they do that. The same concept is done with a meat cleaver on a cut of meat to tenderize it.
How can I get my spouse to understand that I need this?
Here's your rationale: Buy the best, cry once. It's all about the cost per year. In college, I bought a pair of very expensive shoes for my job as a waiter. I couldn't afford them, but I bought them anyhow. They were really light and comfortable and took me through two years of waiting tables and one year as a limo driver and another year of occasional use. And then they still looked good for a month of Sundays. Cost per year was about $25. Most of the other waiters bought a new pair of $55 heavy and uncomfortable shoes every 6 months because theirs wore out and looked ratty by then. One of the principles the successful in the world understand is this: If one buys quality from the start they save money. Don't be penny wise and dollar foolish. This will be one of the most savvy investments and inexpensive leather pieces you'll ever have. And remember, you must truly love yourself before you can love others. A couple of other things to think about you'll be more popular. Everybody isn't buying one. I'll invite you to my birthday party. What's wrong, you chicken?
Which color should I get?
Pick the one that fits who you are. I've observed what the bag owners tend to be like based on the color they have chosen over the years. The category below that fits you best is probably the color you'll enjoy most. Remember, your first inclination is usually the correct one.

Are the animals tortured before they are slaughtered?
Absolutely not ! With some pigs we do use waterboarding and sensory deprivation techniques previous to slaughtering them, but the cows do not require any special handling.
Where can I see one of the bags in person?
I don't have any of the items in stores and we're not big fans of folks coming to our home in San Antonio because of the weirdo factor. My sister, Patricia and her husband (my Chess and Scrabble nemesis), send out the leather from their place near Ft. Worth, Texas, but again, because of the weirdo factor they're not set up to show either. If it helps, everyone tells me that they look better in person.
How much do they cost you, Dave?
Well, I lived for three years in a $100 a month apartment in Mexico with no hot water, because of these bags. My dog, Blue, and I drove for thousands of hours all over the North American continent because of these bags. I had a crooked Federale sent to kill me because of these bags (I convinced him that Señor Alarcon would never pay him) and we became friends). I've shed gallons of blood and tears and sweat and at least a quart of other people's, because of these bags. I've slept in my car or on the rack of my old Land Cruiser at least 150 times because of these bags. I've lost weeks of sleep and have gone hungry for days because of these bags. I was broke for years and even had to trade two of Blue's little puppies for a month's worth of tacos in order to eat because of these bags. I've been detained by who knows how many Mexican police because of these bags. I've thrown away thousands of dollars and made hundreds of mistakes because of these bags. I've been stolen from, taken advantage of and robbed because of these bags (they even stole Blue once, but I got him back). All of these things and more have happened to me because of these bags. They cost me a lot.
Everything I was looking for and then some!
I did a ton of research for executive leather notepad holders (Coach, Tumi, Ghurka, Mont Blanc, Borlino, Hermes, Dunhill and even Levenger) and yours was the best by far. It is the cleanest and most well designed. I love how everything aligns and fits perfectly inside and out. No extra tassels, no unnecessary "clutter". For me, a designer and creative director, this is so important.
I love your notepad holder so much that I bought a smaller version of it the day I got the big one. The big one goes to the cleint meetings and the small one goes everywhere else.
I love your notepad holder so much that I carry it around the house for no real reason other than to have it in my hands! And the leather smell! I hope it never goes away!
IT. IS. AWESOME!
I will definitely be buying more cool products from Saddleback.
Thanks again!
Better than great!
I have been hunting for a notepad folder that'd stand up to my aggressive travel schedule for months before coming across Saddleback. I went with a 25% discounted Dave's Deal in Dark Coffee and I could not be more pleased. The leather is a little stiff (as you'd expect) and it smells very new but the color is awesome and the folder holds everything I need for my weeks on the road. I'm pretty sure that this folder will last far longer than the one it is replacing (a Staples piece). Don't wait! Buy one!
Get it!
Prowling around Dave's Deals for days hoping a tobacco brown would come available. Couldn't wait any longer as my old pad holder needed to be replaced. Item arrived yesterday ahead of schedule (anything SBL can never come quickly enough!) It's a beefy, beautiful, aromatic piece. For the ladies, it works for us, too. Not too masculine. I now have both the small and medium. Thanks for the great products, Saddleback!
Awesome, just awesome!
Ordered a tobacco brown from Dave's deals at the 10% level...he must be really picky because there was really nothing about this that would have made me haggle over a discount...on a scale of 1 to 10 this gets an 11 across the board. I will be a lifetime customer.
Quality, Gorgeous!!
My small notepad holder, big wallet & large tote (All Chestnut) all in one order came in!!! Stunning!!!! Will never by designer handbags again. Saddleback leather all the way!!!!
I'm pissed I could only afford one.
I started out buying a wallet. Two years later I have two of the wallets(one small one large), a moleskin cover, bible cover, and finally a rfid shielded passport wallet. All in Tobacco Brown of course, (as if there was any other color to choose from). About 9 months ago I bought the small notepad holder for myself as a graduation gift. Immediately after opening I realized that I should have dropped the extra few dollars to get the large size but upon looking at it and actually getting my hands on it there was no way I was going to be able to send it back to Saddleback for an exchange. I scrounged out a pad to stick in it and went to get a refill for my nicest pen I had in the house. Long story short, Its been with me everyday, on my desk or in my backpack, used at least once every few hours to check my appointments, jot down a memo to myself or tuck away an import reciept or piece of paper. It has a few small scuffs and dings but as the leather slowly darkens and changes color, the scuffs and scratches almost seem to vanish or become part of its character. I plan on getting the large as soon as I possibly can. Thank you Dave, Suzette and the Saddleback Crew for making me a loyal customer and supporter of what you do, continue making your products and I will continue to buy them.
25% off Medium
Couldn't be happier with this purchase. If you're not sure if you should buy the discounted version, buy it. I received the 25% off Medium Tobacco several days ago and there are only two issues I've noticed with it.
1. Stitching slightly off - http://i.imgur.com/NRslCzt.jpg
This is Saddleback's image - http://i.imgur.com/rtGmwiO.png
2. Scuff (covered by the notepad) - http://i.imgur.com/aEKkE6Q.jpg
These are both aesthetic issues. 25% off more than compensates for these "issues". Buy it.
My New Companion
I bought the tobacco brown small note pad holder after I purchased the iPhone 5 phone case. I didn't really need it I thought, because I am a retired housewife, however not so. This beautiful little pad goes with me everywhere . I find that everyday I find more uses for it. At 70 my memory is now beginning to get bad. I use it constantly to write done things I want to remember. It goes in the car with me to all those church meetings retired people seem to have, and boy the compliments I get on it. I keep it on my bedside table at night because this is when I get those great ideas. During the day it's usually near me wherever I am at the time.
I keep a calendar notebook in the pocket on the left (recently added), and finished notes in the right inside pocket under the pad, have more room on the other side for more stuf. The pen holder soon stretched to hold my favorite ink pen and its big When I first got it, the front cover wouldn't stay closed, but after a few weeks of bending amd working it, it now lays flat.
I almost died when I spilled a chocolate shake on it yesterday, but I washed over the whole front with warm water and a little soap and even the light scratches come off. So don't be afraid of gettin this thing wet as I did. I love this little guy, now I have to find a reason to get his big brother. Five stars all the way, Dave still has not let me down yet. Beautiful leather, wonderful workmanship, (love showing it off) great service. All my pieces look as I would carefully make them if I knew how, the USA should be proud to have the Sadleback Company. Not too many left in the USA are there?
Stop. Click . Buy. Whoever said addiction is a bad thing, needs to try saddleback
Where do I start from. Well I'll be straight forward as possible. If you appreciate the finer things in life, without hesitation, look no further. Saddle back is it! Pure quality, pure finesse. I am totally blown away. I am now a collector of saddleback ' saddle back is not for you.. It's for your generation to come' Dave, you are amazing. Keep the flag flying. Ok got to go, have to purchase more saddle back p.s did I mention postage was first class. One day delivery!!,
Go large, or go home
What can I say, I bought the small version and immediately ordered the medium. I commented on the small previously, so now I'll focus on the medium.
This is perfect for anyone who wishes to be professional and stay stylish at the same time... basically, there isn't any "stuffiness" of a businessman with this one. It is the right size for a pad of paper and another 40-50 sheets in the folder part. The only down side would be with the front divider. It is smaller than the rear, so you can't fit as much in it as you might prefer. The fix you ask? Use a binder for the majority of you EXTRA paperwork and use this for those meetings we all love going to and only carry what you need to.
Brilliant design by Dave and his crew. This is the third product I own...and look forward to more purchases in the very near future.
Notes on-the-go
The notepad holder is great for tucking under your arm or throwing in a small bag on your way out the door. It is also nice to keep out on your desk for quick ideas, and not take up too much room.
The quality is superb. The slot has been perfect for all notepads I have used.
For use in meetings, I have wished I purchased the larger size.
Small Notepad Chestnut
I started with buying a Belt and my wife an I-Pad cover, loved both of them. Now I just bought the Small and Medium Notepad, both in Chestnut, I love both of them!!!!!! I think next will be a briefcase/bag for work.
More organized already.
Just purchased this product a week ago. And feeling more organized already. :p Its the little things..
Absolutly amazing quality in every aspect. I fit two 5x8 note pads in mine. The pocket on the left works great for tucking in one more spot for thought. Give it a squeeze to relieve stress and anxiety. Best thereapy ever. Leather.
Small Notepad
I've had the small notepad in Tobacco light brown for a little over a year. I'm in the military and I use it at work everyday as I go to meetings, etc. It works great with a spiral top 5x8 writing pad. I've also made it work with a spiral calendar on the left side. I cut a slit in the back plastic cover of the calendar so that it slides in the pocket and stays put -- it has worked great.
The quality and workmanship are excellent. I often get compliments on it. Although I've scratched the leather carrying it around, it just continues to look better. In addition, the leather was a bit stiff initially because it is a thick, quality piece of leather. However, over time it has become more flexible -- just like a favorite baseball mitt.
I am very glad I made this purchase. I know I will be using it for the rest of my career!
Medium Notepad
I'm officially a Saddleback junky, now. This is my fifth accessory I have bought from Dave's company, and I am very happy with it. I purchased the chestnut Medium notepad holder.
The notepad holder (abbreviated NPH henceforth) is very sturdy and beautiful out of the box. It does have the logo ont he front, which I like. The interior is equally beautiful and functional.
Two things I'd like to point out that are differences between the medium and small NPHs. The small has a pocket behind the notepad and a similar pocket on the opposite internal side. The small also has 4 rivets. The medium has neither. While there are two large pockets on the left and two small pockets, there is no pocket behind the notepad. Also, there is only one rivet in the medium. Not a problem, but just a difference I want to point out.
The NPH is heavy compared to other similar products, but the quality is obvious durability. The large outter surface of the NPH will get scuffed, but (to me) that builds character. If you want it to look pristine and without a scratch, go with a different company.
The pockets are well placed. You will likely have to stretch them a bit upon first use. The pen holder is out of the way and functional. The first time I put a notepad in the NPH, I had to force it a bit. Again, the next insertion showed the leather stretched a little.
Sturdy, beautiful, funtional, styish, eye-catching. Standard Saddleback.
Rustic, yet sophisticated
I ordered the small 5X8 notepad holder and received this product a week ago. I have had several people pick it up and comment on how well made it is. It doesn't stay closed yet, but I know that the more the leather is worked, the sooner it will close automatically. Fantastic craftmanship! I will order it's older brother (8X11)shortly. A classic, yet rustic look with the functionality that can't be complaired.
I can't see where anyone would settle for a cheeply made product when they could pay slightly more for an unbelievable product! Don't hessitate!
Nice Look
I just received my notepad holder and it looks great. One issue off the bat is the front cover does not stay closed and stays open at an almost 90 degree angle. Hopefully in time the leather will break it and it will stay closed. I think the notebook could benefit greatly with just a small strap to keep it closed.
One more reason it's the best
In addition to all the glowing comments in other reviews, I love this notepad cover because I can fold it back--a fantastic feature that is very hard to find in quality pad folios. When I hold it on my lap or place it on a small table, I can write with ease. It is also a great feature for lefties.
Turns heads, even in executive meetings
I have had my notepad holder for about 18 months now. I purchased a Chestnut in medium (the older, larger one). I take it to class (grad school) and to work. Everywhere I go people admire it (especially when I pull it out of one of my SBL briefcases). I've even been asked by a friend to borrow it so she would look professional during a presentation--of course! From job interviews to executive meetings and even out in the garage to sketch up woodworking drawings, this notepad holder is a constant companion.
Nothing Else Like It!
I grew tired of going through a number of cheap, giveaway-type portfolios that not only looked cheap, but fell apart pretty quickly as well. What's the point? Anyway, I picked up one of these in Chestnut on Dave's Deals and wow! Unless I lose it or somebody steals it, I can't imagine ever wanting or having to replace it. It rides in my Saddleback briefcase wherever I go, and after about 6 months it's picking up some nice character. I get a lot of compliments on it, and it's ALWAYS the nicest portfolio in the room. Go ahead and get one!
