Versatile - Can be rolled up and sealed or filled to capacity and carried open. It can be shut with three straps or just one. You can stick long tubes and tripods out of it while it's closed. There is a built-in handle and a removable/movable one so you can carry it in different ways based on the situation. It even has high and low positions for the shoulder strap based on how full it is. Comes with a short and tall stiff insert if you want to use them. Believe me, This is what you get when a creative guy has three years to perfect a piece of luggage.
100 Year Warranty - If it goes before you do, we'll fix it or replace it for free. Heck, have your great grandchildren talk to my great grandchildren and we'll take care of them too. Only for 100 years though.
Carry-on Luggage Friendly - I designed all my Waterbags to be nine inches deep. That’s about as big as you can go and still be able to slide it easily into the overhead compartment on airplanes.
Made of ONE Solid Piece of Leather – A piece of leather cut out in the shape of a cross and then bent up and sewn together. The fewer seams, the stronger and more watertight because a seam is a place where water gets in. Also, the more seams the weaker the bag because a seam is where the needle tore a bunch of holes in the leather and weakened it.
Full Grain Leather - Only thick Full grain leather; not weaker Top grain, Genuine or Bonded. The top layer has the toughest and tightest fibers of the leather (grain) and the pores that take in your oils when touched. That's why full grain luggage ages so nicely. It's a shame when they shave off that top layer and paint it to get rid of imperfections.
No Breakable Parts - No zippers, buttons or any other breakable parts. How much is a billion dollar submarine worth with a cardboard hatch?
Industrial Thread - Stout industrial marine-grade Polyester UV-resistant thread. It's used for airbags, sails, work boots and other heavy-duty applications. There's none better that I know of. I ought to keep an extra spool in my truck for towing.
Fully Tanned Leather - Good tanneries remove all natural oils and preservatives from the hide and then soak and tumble it for up to twenty hours until the new liquids reach the middle. Cheap tanneries only tumble them long enough to color the surface and leave the middle to dry up and crack.
Hidden Nylon Reinforcing Straps - A German leather craftsman told me that since leather stretches, he sews hidden nylon straps into his leather horse equipment. We do that on all stress points.
Rivets - Kind of killing a fly with a shotgun, but any place that could ever come apart in 100 years, gets a rivet. Even rocks wear away.
Hardware - High stress places get nickel plated brass because it's pliable and strong. The rest get high-grade equestrian hardware.
This item is currently shipping with the shoulder strap clasps pictured
Lining - The bottom of the Waterbag is lined with pigskin. The bag also comes with a 6” (15.2 cm) and a 9” (22.9 cm) rigid insert lined with pigskin.
Leather - 100% Hypoallergenic four to five ounce (2.0mm to 2.2mm) thick Full Grain chrome tanned leather. Usually, cowboy and work boots are made with 1.8mm - 2.0mm thickness. And, our leather isn't "buttery soft" (fibers separated and broken down by hours of tumbling and stretching at the tannery). It's your job to tenderize it with use.
Construction - The body is made from one solid piece of leather. Seams are the weakest point and so the fewer the better. It would be much cheaper for us to make it with lots of smaller pieces, but it's all of the quality details such as this that separate us from the masses.
Thread - The double zero continuous-filament Polyester thread we use is a little thicker than what is used on most boots. It's impressive and expensive. Common thread is made of short little fibers wound together into one long thread. This thread is made of long continuous fibers that won't fall apart in a strong wind. Polyester thread is the only thread I know of that doesn't deteriorate with exposure to sun.
How can I convince my honey that I need this?
So you want it. Now comes the hard part of convincing your honey that you need it. Maybe if you throw some of these phrases into the conversation, it'll help.
Her to Him
You know, I feel frisky just thinking about that leather piece.
I would just feel so sexy carrying this on my body.
I don't think I'd need to go shopping for another thing all year after buying something like this.
Him to Her
Looking at this case just makes me want to HOLD you.
I don't know why, but owning a hope and a dream like this, makes me want to just sit down on the couch and OPEN UP about the hopes and dreams we share.
Think of all of the extra TIME we'd spend TOGETHER on our long walks holding hands and showing off the leather.
Me to Both of You
You'll be more popular. You'll have more friends. What's wrong, you chicken? I might invite you to my birthday party. If you don't buy this case, then next year, when you're scouring the internet again looking for your next garage sale piece because yours is already torn or broken, your mind will drift back to my words. You'll slowly shake your head and say, "Man, was that guy right or what". And then you'll slightly squint, press your lips together and give a few small nods. I tell you what, buy it now or kick yourself later. I've made this for you to break in. It'll take a few months until it really starts to look cool, and you'll have to use it a lot. In fact, the more you use it, the better it looks (and it already looks great). It'll eventually form to the places on your body it touches regularly. The edges will soften and round some to become even more chic and classic looking than it already does. Where can I see one of these cases in person? I don't have any of the items in stores and we're not big fans of folks coming to our home because of the weirdo factor. My sister, Patricia, and her husband (my Chess and Scrabble nemesis) send out the leather from their place near Ft. Worth, Texas. But again, because of the weirdo factor, they don't want you dropping by there either. If it helps, everyone tells me that they're much more impressed with them in person. Which color should I get?
Pick the one that fits who you are. I've observed what the bag owners tend to be like by the colors they've chosen over the years. The category below that fits you best is probably the color you'll enjoy most. Remember, your first inclination is usually the correct one. Tobacco Light Brown (Sanguine)

Are the animals tortured before they are slaughtered? Absolutely not! With some pigs we do use waterboarding and sensory deprivation techniques previous to slaughtering them, but the cows do not require any special handling.
How much do these leather things cost you, Dave? Well, I lived for three years in a $100 a month apartment in Mexico with no hot water, because of these bags. My dog, Blue, and I drove for thousands of hours all over the North American continent because of these bags. I had a crooked Federale sent to kill me because of these bags (I convinced him that Senor Alarcon would never pay him) and we became friends). I've shed gallons of blood and tears and sweat and at least a quart of other people's, because of these bags. I've slept in my car or on the rack of my old Land Cruiser at least 150 times because of these bags. I've lost weeks of sleep and have gone hungry for days because of these bags. I was broke for years and even had to trade two of Blue's little puppies for a month's worth of tacos in order to eat because of these bags. I've been detained by who knows how many Mexican police because of these bags. I've thrown away thousands of dollars and made hundreds of mistakes because of these bags. I've been stolen from, taken advantage of and robbed because of these bags (they even stole Blue once, but I got him back). All of these things and more have happened to me because of these bags. They cost me a lot. All other common questions
Another water bag
I purchased the small water bag in Tobacco brown. I own the medium size.
I bought the small because discontinued and I felt this would provide an alternate size of carry on.
This size is great for smaller loads and works great as a medical bag and smaller carry. Backpack conversion feels ok.
I own the backpack, front pocket backpack and duffel.
I really like the small water bag for a custom fit between the bigger water bag and duffel or backpack.
Cannot go wrong. My wife says I own too many bags. What does she know. (see Dave's advice about explaining to your wife)
Once again....
....I had the good fortune of purchasing a another water bag, though even more fortunately I think it may have been the last of the discontinued small size. What a great carry on (and carry all)! Lots of compliments from strangers, which is a little odd. I'm not so comfortable with envy, but it may make you folks at SBL happy that your work is eye catching and enviable - many of the positive comments came from people who were themselves carrying "other leather" bags.
My first water bag was a medium size. It's a great bag too, and matches nicely as a carryon/all with the small suitcase I also purchased. They are best for traveling with my wife, who carries far more than I do on a trip. They are both in the beautiful chestnut color. The new small water bag is black, and holds just enough for even a 3-4 day trip, as long as what I'm carrying can tolerate being rolled or folded closely. Simply great bags, and masterfully made. Heirloom quality....!
Awesome Bag...
I never write reviews and I'm not going to write a book here, but I have to say that the Waterbag (medium) is an awesome bag that will probably last for the rest of my life. The quality, workmanship and detail is just A1. I'm a very satisfied customer with all of Saddleback Leather products. I have the MacBook Pro sleeve and the iPad case and I will be back to buy more from Saddleback Leather. The products are not cheap but as they say you pay for what you get. I can't imagine a better made bag and the quality of material used to make it.
Now the reason why I bought the Waterbag is for numerous reasons. I will use it not only for travel but to keep my camera (DSLR) safe and dust free while driving and looking for things to shoot. Well let me explain. Before I kept my DSLR and 70-200mm lens on the front passenger seat so that I would have a quick access to my camera. Dust and sudden stops were just a big problem for me. Dust is self explanatory and sudden stops would send my camera flying off the seat. Well now with the Waterbag on the seat, nicely strapped, all I have to do is put my camera in it and fold the sides over and my problems are over. The DSLR stays dust free and not a chance that it will fly off the seat to the floor while braking.
Thanks Dave for making such quality products. Keep up the good work and craftsmanship, hope your sales soar through the roof.
Great utility bag
This is a beautiful bag. I purchased the medium waterbag for short trips away from home and everyday use in grocery store and market shopping. I break it down, roll it up, and carry it anywhere I'm going to need a tote for things brought home. The insert increases its versatility and stability if carrying bottles or cans.
Though it's a little heavy and stiff when brand new, a sparing amount of mink oil and leather honey will soften it up and improve the carry.
Well done SBL.
God bless you for not being ashamed to share the scriptures and gospel of Jesus Christ. I'll make use of them also.
Great Multi-Purpose Bag
I've had a Medium Waterbag for about a year. I was torn between the Waterbag and the Duffel, but the measurements of the Waterbag sold me.
The Waterbag can be used without a liner, or with the short liner and works well as a carry-on bag. The duffel seems a bit big for that.
The waterbag isn't very heavy and can fit a lot of gear. I'd recommend it as a great go-to travel bag.
Great Bag
This bag is a great bag and tough as nails! I travel a lot and I am always being asked about my bag. Which is fine except when you want to get out of customs at the airport. This bag is overbuilt to perfection.
Hello Dave, I WOULD ALSO SECOND THE IDEA OF A FREQUENT FLYER DISCOUNT.
Great bag
I have owned this bag (size Med, color tobacco brown) since 6/12.
I love the 2 optional rectangular inserts, although I use the higher side one most of the time.
This bag packs well. This size holds quite a bit. I like the closure options. I can use the bag as a carry by removing my clothes and the insert quickly to make a walk around bag. (Watch Dave's Video). This increases the versatility.
I use it as a car bag or a carry on. I am considering adapting the bag to try to make it a functional camera bag.
I would not check this luggage as it has no lock capabilities and I am a little paranoid about that. The lock is a personal issue, but I suppose otherwise would be a great airline bag.
I plan to get other sizes as my needs change.
Once again a great bag.
Dave, PLEASE CONSIDER FREQUENT FLYER DISCOUNTS!!
tough as nails
Received my medium waterbag as an early Christmas present about a month ago. Almost immediately took it on a three week tour of Western Canada. I practically live on a tour bus, but am in and out of hotels constantly. It easily held around a week and a half worth of clothes. This bag's modular capabilities make it great for living out of on trips. Easily the most convenient piece of luggage I could ever imagine. I sincerely thought I was a pro at living on the road, but this bag takes it to a whole new level. The only con would be that my life is too easy, now. It hardly feels like work any more.
Brilliant!
I love Large Dark Coffee Brown water bag!
Wherever I travel I get comments on it.
If you plan on using it as a carry-on I would recommend the medium instead.
I have flown a ton with it as a a carry-on, but I usually have to sweet talk a gate agent to get them to look the other way for my very slightly oversized piece of carry-on(don't try to put it in the sizing bin, it wont fit).
It travels every week with me in my car, a touch big for me as a true overnight bag.
