I wanted a XL dark coffee brown classic briefcase, but they were out of stock. Just for the heck of it, I checked Dave's deals out and there was just what I wanted for $100 bucks off.
Now I'm just the kind of person that never buys anything used or damaged, but for some reason I took a chance and ordered the case that was supposed to have some imperfections.
About three days later, there is my Dave's deal case and I have not been able to find anything wrong with the briefcase. I am happy as a clam with the entire purchase experience.
I have read some people mention the weight, but the case is constructed out of thick high grade leather...it's going to be heavy compared to thin, lightweight leather or vinyl. The heaviness helps to protect what you put in the bag, and helps the bag keep its shape when it's full of books and papers.
I can't say enough good things about the construction and quality of this briefcase. It is well worth the money. The service was impeccable also, as they send you an email when the order is received and when it is shipped with tracking information so you know when to expect it at your front door.
I wish all my shopping experiences went this smoothly. I recommend this product without any reservations.
I have looked online at these briefcases for the past 3 years. Like many others I thought the price was a little much to spend on a bag but I recently took the plunge and the only thing I can say is.....I am stupid for not doing this 3 years ago.
I now own the medium classic briefcase, 1 cable bag, and I have 2 wallets, bible cover, and leather case on the way. I'm an addict.
I wanted this bag for over a year before I was finally able to make myself spend this much money on a bag. My only regret is not doing it sooner! If you are thinking about buying this bag, just buy it and you will understand! Thank you Saddleback and Dave for putting such incredible products on the market! I am a Saddleback fan for life!
My Large DCB Classic Briefcase has finally arrived (after being painfully delayed due to Storm Juno!). While I have nothing unique here to add (rest assured, it is more amazing than you think), I do have to say that my biggest relief is that I can stop staying up late nights watching Dave's and Youtube's videos about this bag and debating between DCB and Tobacco. I can finally rest and just enjoy the pinnacle moment of my bag ownership.
First off, I must say this is the first review I've ever written about any product (really). I felt compelled to write this review because of the amazingly fast service and spectacular quality. Plus I love the overall concept of the Saddleback Company and their philosophy on business.
I'm a typical American who wants everything right now. :-) So needless to say, once I was ready to pull the trigger and place my order (Large Classic Briefcase in Chestnut, Chestnut Luggage Tag & Medium Chestnut Wallet) I wanted it right away (as in now). To my surprise, Saddleback practically made that happen. I don't know if this is typical of Saddleback service, but the order was in the hands of UPS and on it's way to me faster than anything I have EVER ordered from ANY company.
After several days of reviewing the site and looking hard for a briefcase of better quality, I simply could not find anything better. So I decided to take the plunge and place my order. This is no small decision (at least for me) because the prices are certainly not cheap, but if you order you will soon see that the quality more than makes up for the price. You truly do get what you pay for from Saddleback (at least on my 3 items). I placed my order at about 2pm in the afternoon. By 3:30pm I received notification that the order was complete and ready for UPS pickup with a tracking number. By 5:30pm I had confirmation from UPS that the shipment had been picked up and was on it's way. WOW!!! In most cases, I would not have expected the order to go out until at least the next day so this more than exceeded my expectations from a service perspective. Hats off to the folks in shipping!!
From a quality perspective, all the reviews are spot on. Once I received my order I inspected it very thoroughly to verify it didn't have any flaws in workmanship or materials. I was relieved and very impressed that all the reviews and videos I watched were all correct. This briefcase is gorgeous and definitely stands up to the claims.
I agonized quite a bit over this purchase because if I'm going to pay this much for a briefcase, it had better stand-up to the 'Buy Nice or Buy Twice' slogan. Well, the briefcase is everything I had hoped for and even a little more. I only wish I could be around for the full 100 years to see how it looks when the warranty expires.
I'm 5'9 and 210lb and the Large Briefcase is just right. I thought quite a bit about getting the medium bag since i'm on the shorter side, but very glad I went with the large. My laptop would not have fit in the medium. Yes, it is heavy, but it's not heavy for the sake of being heavy. I definitely feel this is the weight of quality and I'm more than happy to carry an extra couple pounds to carry a bag of this quality and character. If you want a light briefcase, this isn't it. However, if you want the absolute best made briefcase you can buy that's expected to last 100 years (and look REALLY COOL doing it), then THIS IS IT!!!
I've had mine about three years now, and I'm a proud owner. However, there are a few things that bother me. But first the good...
It's beautiful. It's spacious. Clearly it will last longer than I will. It's unique, different and awesome.
But it's not perfect...
When you pick it up to take with you, if the flap isn't buckled down, you're picking it up by the open flap. The handle is mounted to the top of the flap, so you either need to stop and buckle it before you grab and go, or pick it up by the strap instead of the handle, which causes it to tip forward. This makes a beautiful graceful product suddenly very awkward, like picking up a swan by its neck.
My only other gripe is that it's taking too long to break in! I don't mean that in a complimentary way, either. The front piece of leather that the flap buckles to is so thick that it won't loosen up. It affects the way the bag sits on the floor and makes it hard to put in a trunk, back of a car, etc. I had imagined it softening up over the years, but I'm not sure it ever will.
This bag is as prized a treasure as my high-end acoustic guitars. My kids have each laid claim on it when I die. I don't regret buying it at all, but since I mostly use it as a laptop bag, I would probably get a backpack model if I had to do it again. Thanks, Dave, for an awesome product!
I’ve had the large classic briefcase (Tobacco) for about 9 months now, and figured it deserved a review. I agonized over which size and color to get and am very happy with both. I’m 5’10, 170 and the large works perfectly for me. I can fit my 15 inch macbook pro (in saddleback computer case), lunch and workout clothes with some room to spare. I’ve also crammed 3 6-packs and a few loose beverages in there, carefully (without anything else taking up space).
Like some of the other reviewers here, I did youtube searches, google searches, read every review and talked incessantly to my wife about what color and size to get. Now with my experience, I hope to answer some of the questions I initially had in the event that it will help some others who are wondering the same things.
Color: The color is pretty spot on with the pictures on the website. However, it will “scuff” and get marked up if you use it hard. Most of these light markings will rub out. When you open and close the bag often, the thread on the top of the “lid” will leave these scuff marks on the front of the bag as it brushes against it. These aren’t permanent, but if you are super particular, be aware. I personally like the worn look, but this my preference. Also, if you use the shoulder strap a lot, the side of the bag that rubs against your leg will get smoother and darken in the process.
Feel: The bag has a nice soft broken-in feel to it. Even the sides and top that are lined with pigskin are pretty malleable. My friend has had the medium briefcase in Chestnut for years, and when he felt my 6-month old Tobacco briefcase, he immediately asked how I got it broken in so quickly! I think it has to do with the color, but my explanation is long winded:
SO- I also have the side pocket duffel in Chestnut and the iPad case in Charcoal. I don’t know if this is widespread, but my duffel is MUCH stiffer than the briefcase. I believe this is because of the color treatment, but am purely speculating. The charcoal iPad case is also soft and malleable like the briefcase, but seems to lighten at the creases where it is bent (if you bend it). The Chestnut colored duffel doesn’t seem to scuff as much as the Tobacco, but when it does, it looks more out of place to me. This might be because the pristine brand-new chestnut looks fancier.
Use: I attach the briefcase to the side of my V-rod in place of traditional saddlebags, and it holds up nicely. It’s been down-poured on and while the outside looks soaked, the inside stayed nice and dry.
Overall, the bag is awesome. Holds up great to all the abuse I’ve given it. I’m most impressed with the feel and look of the bag. This color is versatile enough to be casual, but I think would work great in a very professional setting. Absolutely worth the money and will be the last bag you ever buy.
I carried a Mulholland Angler bag for about 10 years. It was a good bag, but the strap pad wore out and they wanted $90 for a replacement strap (they wouldn't sell me just the pad). So I went with a Saddleback.
The large size is just right to carry my daily stuff and will expand to hold a change of clothes, etc. The bag seemed smaller than it should on the inside at first, but that was because it was new and the leather was stiff. Now that's all better.
I guess the key strap could be longer so I could unlock my front door easier without having to pull the bag forward toward the door. That's all I would change.
Like many others, I secretly visited the SBL website for years perusing the many beautiful pieces, and eventually talking myself into taking the plunge and ordering a large dark coffee brown classic briefcase.
When it arrived, I was somewhat surprised at how supple and pliable the leather was, i really felt somewhat cheated out of the experience of breaking it in, it already seemed to be right out of the box. But I got over that, and commenced my journey.
I've had my briefcase just a few months shy of a year, and I have had no feelings of regret in purchasing it. I've used it for a great many things. I've used it for normal business (laptop, files, pens, cables etc), it's seen service as an overnight bag (change of clothes, dog food and treats, collapsible bowls), it's carried recording equipment, wood carving tools, anything and everything I've needed a bag for to transport something, has been in my SBL briefcase. I don't treat it with kid gloves, that would be disrespectful. It's made for life, and it lives mine along with me. It's more than up to the challenge.
I've grown very fond of this bag, it goes where I go, it does what I need it to do without complaint. As others have said, it's classic styling and ruggedness will garner you many compliments and questions. The only real problem with Dave's products are, you'll want to live your life with more SBL companions. I can think of worse things though.
After 8 years of admiring the XL Classic Briefcase in Tobacco my beautiful wife of 35 years purchased this amazing bag for me for Christmas. It is exactly as described on the website and more. The leather and craftsmanship are outstanding. The claims about high quality leather and stitching are accurate. I inspected the bag thoroughly on Christmas day and the closer I looked, the more I was impressed. If you are reading these reviews like I did (weekly) thinking about purchasing this bag and what color to pick (like I did for 8 long years), I recommend the tobacco color. It looks like a leather briefcase should look. Casual and sophisticated at the same time.
On a separate note: The customer service at Saddleback is incredible. Exactly what you would hope for in an organization. Knowledgable, professional, friendly and very personal. Dave has done a great job of attracting a very talented team of professionals. They really add to the total Saddleback experience. Great job Saddleback.
I have always love quality leather products but they are hard to find, I like to pay more and only buy once. When I would look to see what grain of leather was on the product I was researching, I could'nt find it until I found Saddlebackleather company. Dave tells you Full-grain and seeing the tanning process I knew I had found my leather source.
I bought the large briefcase in Tobacco and I could'nt be happier, it holds my lunch, 2 water bottles, surefire flashlights, leatherman, knife, spare phone, bible, kindle, cords, pens, ipod, earbuds, GPS, camera, cords, notepad, glasses, sunglasses. I use it everyday for work and I enjoy it very much, the price is not much when you consider you will have it for a lifetime and look for a Dave's deal, it helps. Its thick, sturdy and built well and you will know your hard earned money was well spent.
I have bought 4 other products and they are all superb!! built to last and take a beating if they have to, or take a lifetime of use, just get one and you will be happy you did. Most like good quality, well it comes with a price. Love my Bag!!!
I just came home to my unopened SBL medium DCB briefcase, and I can't tell you how excited I am to break it in and allow to age naturally. I am not fond of the smell, but the bag is beautiful. I have been sitting on it and kneeling on it so that it softens up. The bag (as I am typing to you) is VERY stiff, and if you have sensitive/ thin skin, like me, be prepared to get a few cuts.
The medium is the perfect size for me, and because I am a student, it holds exactly what I need for the day; consisting of: my 13" MBP, multiple textbooks, a jacket for the cold weather here in Canada, my pencil case etc.
I have nothing bad to say about this bag, other than if you live outside of the USA, be prepared to pay extra for shipping and handling.Furthermore, if you live in Canada, be prepared topaz duties and taxes (mine was 84$).
YOU WILL NOT REGRET PURCHASING THIS BAG. ITS WORTH THE $$$. "Buy nice or buy twice" Dave Munson
This is the bag. The one. The holy grail of bags that meets that duality of working professional that shifts into the hiking trail wanderer at will. This bag looks incredible hanging off your shoulder in a tailored suit or with a polar fleece pullover and Timberland boots. It's tough, it's suave, it's class, it's wicked bad (in a good way)! There are few things that bring as much pleasure as tossing this bad boy from my sedan to the front seat of an old CJ7 Jeep and taking off into the woods. This bag speaks volumes about you. Confidence, rugged, reliable, adventurous, clever, practical, tasteful, and well you get the idea. It is all things that you loved about the characters you read about and watched - Jack London books, Daniel Boone, Jeremiah Johnson, etc. Indiana Jones would buy this bag!
I used to business travel quite a bit on planes and trains. When I walked down the aisle to take my seat, I would see peoples' eyes lock onto my bag and the expression of admiration (and envy) on their faces. This bag literally announces you in a room, office, plane, forest, zoo, or lodge. I have received literally HUNDREDS of compliments since I bought this two years ago. Everyone wants this bag when they see it and touch it. It has power. It has presence. It is everything you always wanted and more. I'm on here to get one as a Christmas present for a dear friend as you only need one as it will outlast you and be passed down through your children to your grandchildren. Dave isn't kidding with a 100 year guarantee and that they "will fight over it when you're dead". It's a treasure but a treasure that goes out with you everywhere to chew gum and kick ass. And we are all out of gum. Buy it! It will be the best purchase you've ever made! A Bentley takes a distant second.
I've had the medium, dark coffee brown briefcase for over three months now. It is hands down the best briefcase and bag I've ever owned. I've packed it for a two day trip as well as overnight business travel. It is extremely comfortable carrying it on the shoulder, as a backpack, and just by the handle.
The bag is extremely durable and is barely beginning to break in. Definitely picking up some nice scars from all the travel but tough as nails. I'm hooked on these products and have ordered a medium front pocket backpack as well. Between these two I can pack everything I need for the better part of the week (or even longer).
Don't hesitate. Get this briefcase - you will put it to more uses than you think!
I'm an ER doctor and had a major trauma the other day. The person had a devastating injury to his leg and was bleeding to death. To my surprise the ER I was workimg at didn't have a turiquete. I pulled the strap off of my bag and sinched down.
How many times can you say you bag has literally saved someone's Life?
Only issue was that the holes in the strap don't go the length so I had to double the strap back around but it worked.
My strap has a little more character now but if ever find my self in the same situation I'm confident that the bag will come threw as expected.
I have had my bag now almost 10 years, thought it might be time to write a review on it...
On top of being absolutely gorgeous, it has remained rock solid all these years, and just seems to get more beautiful the longer I have it.
It's been across the the country and around the world with me, and it doesn't matter where I am, not a week goes by where someone will compliment me on my beautiful bag and ask me where I got it (I should be getting a commission :) ).
I have the XL Briefcase, it holds my 17" MacBook Pro perfectly, but it is indeed a heavy beast, just make sure you hit the gym before attempting to lug this thing through the airport. :)
I have owned the classic briefcase for 3 years now and it gets better and better as the years past. The best part of owning a saddleback leather product is not the comments you get but the customer service you receive. I have made several phone calls and emails over the years and every time, it's been a wonderful caring person on the other end.
Thank you Saddleback
I purchased the Large Classic Briefcase in Tobacco and the Medium Front Pocket Backpack in Chestnut. I will be documenting as much as I can from unboxing to deeply worn in. My videos are honest, showing what I think are flaws (few if any), as well as awesomeness. I've owned my Tobacco Large briefcase for a year now, and I might be able to give a little insight that others haven't given...
I had spied these bags for a year before biting the bullet and getting one. I loved the style and look of the original briefcase, and just before I purchased, they rolled out the old tobacco color (my favorite). The bag is beautiful, no doubt. A medium probably would have suited my female 5'9" frame a little better but I wanted to be able to use this as my primary laptop bag. Well, one year later and it's still that bag. It gets nearly daily use (albeit thrown in the trunk of my car and lugged to work and back home). There are no real signs of wear and tear just yet - merely scratches to the exterior of the bag. I haven't conditioned it yet, but I'd imagine these would buff out pretty easily. The chosen "marks" used on the bag are fairly discrete and pretty cool looking. There's only a few that I've seen, but I like this look.
Now...practicality. As many, many, many, many people have mentioned - it's just heavy. It's not heavy in the sense that I'm picking up a 15 lb bowling ball - it's heavy for a bag. A bag that is supposed to be used often. Any backpacker or traveler knows that every pound you carry counts. That makes this bag wildly impractical. Coupled with all the new restrictions on size and weight for carry on luggage...well...hey, I admire people who can and do travel with this. It would not be my first pick. I'd rather use a leather reinforced waxed canvas backpack and replace it occasionally for sake of weight and ease.
Carrying this as a briefcase...well...with a laptop and a few accessories, carrying it by the handle causes my hand to go numb. Seriously. Carrying it with the strap slung over a shoulder causes the bag to hit my leg constantly when I walk and it hurts. Seriously. I decided to just use it as a backpack - but a few problems still exist. I forced the O ring at the top of the bag under the handle so it wouldn't dig into my back. Setting it up in backpack mode means that the strap slides through and it slides through a lot. You have to grab both straps at once and swing it over on to your back. I've definitely hurt my shoulders with this motion. Also, if you have medium to long hair - it WILL get caught and ripped out between the O ring and the strap. Be careful and move your hair over one shoulder. I wish they made static backpack straps for this with better padding for the shoulders. I know, I know...I should have just gotten a backpack. But I like this look and style.
I actually rarely get compliments on the bag. Maybe it's because I'm a girl carrying it around? Maybe it's because the bag only comes with me to work and home? Maybe it's because I'm in Los Angeles and no one cares? It doesn't matter to me, but I don't have the same experiences as others with the bag.
Bottom line - it's okay. It seems to be well made, but it's not very practical. I consider it my expensive and fanciful laptop bag. Now if only I can rig it with straps that don't slide...then I'd be really happy. I see that the backpacks here are still 5lbs. That's still a lot when you have severe weight restrictions with airline travel. Ah, well. Buy it because you love it and have to have it, not because you're looking for a replacement bag.
I have been waiting for the opportunity to write this review. I initially ordered the Front Pocket Briefcase and it was quite nice. However, it was smaller than I wanted, so I returned it for the Classic Briefcase. When I received it, it seemed like it may have been returned, as it was not tight, did not have a tag and seemed a little used. I called Saddleback and they replaced the bag immediately. I have received my Classic Chestnut Large briefcase and I love it. However, If you're looking for perfection and have a high level attention to detail, you may notice some rivets that are not perfectly lined up. This initially bothered me, yet I've decided to just get over it. This is the only reason I gave it a 4 vs. a 5.
Do know that it is a big briefcase. In other words, if you don't have a lot to carry around, it may be overkill. I love carrying it so much that I put stuff in it that I don't even need, just to fill it up and carry it around. That may sound funny, but I love carrying the case that much. And if you're worried about weight, yes, it is heavier than most other bags. However, don't be a weakling! Our kids carry back packs to school that are 10-20lbs...at least my daughter's is! So, if my daughter can carry the weight all over the college campus, surely I can handle this manly bag! Switch arms from time to time for a nice workout! Yet, if you want a light-weight girly bag, look elsewhere.
I read every possible review you could imagine and it is clear that Saddleback leads the pack in quality for the price. I tried to find a better value, but simply could not. There were some high-end bags that I was not able to even find a review on. There's just something about Saddleback bags that have the attention and respect of leather makers around the world.
So make the investment and don't look back. If for some reason you don't like it, Saddleback will take it back with no questions. I am quite pleased and look forward to carrying this briefcase for many years to come!
Excellent craftmanship. I received it today. It's exactely what I wanted. The bag has character. I suggest to everyone out of US who want to buy it to be informed about the Costums Taxes. Here in Albania I payed 137.25 $ in the account of Albanian Costums.
If you're the type of person who buys high quality things instead of Wal-Mart crap, this is your bag. It will last and last and look really good. It's heavy, but not as bad as some people describe. To me it just feels very substantial in my hands.
A briefcase that I had for years developed a problem with the handle. I contacted the manufacturer and they would not do anything to repair it without me paying to send it to some place in Florida and then they would tell me how much it would cost to fix it. I then took it to a leather repair place and they wanted over $200 to replace the handles, stain the leather to match the bag and repair some other leather damage to the bag. Disappointed that the prior bag manufacturer (made in the USA) would not take care of the issue, I looked into a briefcase with a lifetime warranty and came across Saddleback. The bag is outstanding. It has surpassed my expectations. Some people make an issue out of the weight, but this bag is only about 2 pounds heavier than my prior briefcase and this one has a shoulder strap to make carrying easier. I guess some folks might have trouble with the bag, but I don't see it as a problem for an adult man to carry. The leather is thick and sturdy. I'm a lawyer the case is formal enough for court and the large size is no problem fitting under a seat on an airplane. Saddleback is a little expensive, but the quality is outstanding the you don't have to worry about what to do if there is a problem in a couple of years like you would with a knockoff brand or briefcase with a year or two warranty.
I own two med. sized classic briefcases - the bags are tough looking and have gotten several positive comments from people. I have never used the shoulder strap and generally use the bags to carry documents from car, to office, to boardroom.
I am somewhat annoyed at how one of the bags won't stay up on their own, instead one in particular seems to sag, and often falls over spilling all of the stuff on the floor.
My colleague bought a thin front pocket briefcase and had the same problem, after asking them he concluded that apparently they soften up over the years, but I am not convinced at how that would solve the problem and don't really want to wait the prescribed 15 years.
I'm going to order a large briefcase shortly, and will report back as to whether or not it is lopsided too.
I'm a bag freak. I have so many bags. I looked at this website for a month before I made a decision. My wife says that for every bag I buy, I have to donate a bag to charity. I can honestly say that my Large Classic Briefcase in Chestnut will be the last bag I ever buy. I can give away all of my others. There's no reason to keep them, this is the only bag I will carry for the rest of my life........ well, except for a backpack I have that was equally expensive.
I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with any Saddleback Leather product. This won't be my last purchase from them. And...... the compliments are unbelievable! The first day I wore it, I was bombarded with OMG's!
