I purchased my thin briefcase about a year ago and it gets better with age. It has a distinct look about it and I have received compliements about it from several coworkers. I think one of the benefits of ordering from SBL is the ability to choose a size of bag. Also some may think these bags are expensive, but they are really very competitively priced and an excellent value. If you are looking for something that is not your run of the mill leather product, by all means purchase this bag.

We use natural Markings Equal Inclusion of Exceptional Imperfection Ornamentation
"... Saddleback Leather no longer discriminates against any cow on the basis of age, appearance, lactose intolerance... if the beast has a natural marking or brand, or whether or not they worship the Divine Bovine."
Truth is, sometimes beauty is only skin deep... like with cows. Their poetry is notoriously terrible, but man, their hides are nature's art. We don't believe that flawlessness equals beauty. Beauty is when we're able to see something as it really is.
This is true with humans too. There are lots of quality people who are really beautiful not in spite of, but because of the marks life has given them.
A while back, I was on a small island off the coast of Panama and was making my way to a fabled surf spot called Wizard Beach, only accessible by foot.
I picked the thin medium briefcase on Dave's deals. It just came in yesterday. Couldn't be happier. This is hands down the best briefcase I've ever seen.
The large dark coffee brown thin briefcase far exceeded my expectations. The quality is outstanding, the design is simple and elegant, and the functionality is very well thought out. It is a true beauty! It certainly is the last one you will ever need to buy...unless you become addicted to their products, which will probably happen. I started out with the ID wallet, and don't plan on stopping with this briefcase.
I've been carrying a bag every day of my life since I entered grade school. At first it was a big canvas military backpack, then a Timbuk2 messenger bag, and now the medium thin briefcase from SBL.
If you're looking for the bag to carry every day, this is probably the best one money can buy. At 4lbs, it's got some heft to it but isn't the 6lb monster the Classic briefcase is. My daily carry includes an ipad (or occasoinal laptop), DS, all my chargers/cables, earbuds in case, pen and paper pad, wallet and occasional other materials with room to spare. It's a bigger bag than you might expect given it's the smallest briefcase SBL offers.
After a few weeks use it's already developing a really nice look to the leather, softening up in the joints and getting a couple battle scars from the weekly grind.
My only complaints would be in the strap hardware that attaches to the bag. If you're the type who would remove the strap occasionally, or convert it to a backpack, it can be quite difficult and slow to unscrew the hinged latches. They aren't quick release by any means.
Beyond that tho. This is the day-to-day office warriors dream, and it's tough enough to stand up to any boardroom jungle. Couldn't be happier.
I've had my bag for about a year now. At first I felt I made a mistake in getting chestnut over dark coffee brown, but with each passing day, I love the colour more and more. This bag has been one of, if not, the best purchases I have ever made. It works as a fantastic book bag, briefcase, and overnight bag. Its hard to put into words how I feel about this bag. I feel like it grows with me. It just keeps getting better with age and I'm looking forward to many future years of use.
I'd like to thank saddleback leather for such a great product.
I bought a large thin Tobacco Brown briefcase as a Dave's Deal with a 10% discount and received it yesterday. It is terrific and fits the bill with all the usual hallmarks of Saddleback quality. (I already own medium and large classic briefcases, a knapsack and sundry other items, so you know I'm a true believer. And I'm ordering two more items tonight.)
It's the Dave's Deal part I wanted to comment on. On the Dave's Deal page, the 10% discount is described as reserved for pieces with defects only visible when you look for them when the item is actually in your hand, and that was exactly the case. My item had slight discoloration along one gusset seam and slight warping along one outer corner. My guess is that it would have looked like that within one week of normal use by yours truly. I think I've gotten a great deal and couldn't be more pleased.
Thanks Dave and team!
Picked up my bag from the local post office this morning. I loved the color and the sturdiness of the bag. Didn't like the stiffness but I understand I have to wear it in. It truly is the experience that makes items of quality like this worth it. The bag shall gain character through how you treat it. Back to the manly bag, sturdy, leather is thick and feels like it can withstand a stab, and spacious (I got the large). It is heavy and that will be a decent workout for me during my long commutes. On a funny note, I did slip on ice today (canadian winter) and wished I had fallen on the actual bag for some decent battle scars. Alas, I fell on my bottom. Cheers and hope all who consider this bag enjoy it in good health.
After looking at almost every leather briefcase south of I-10 in Houston and being very disappointed at the selection and quality I found, I took to the internet. I kept coming back to Saddleback. While it was slightly more than I was looking to pay, I was sold on the story and Dave's passion for creating quality without compromise. I pulled the trigger on the thin briefcase and the MacBook Air sleeve in Chestnut and, as promised, it shipped the same day and delivered a couple of days later.
Both products were everything described on the website and more. Just fantastic quality and beautiful, beautiful leather pieces. I fell in love....so much so that I immediately applied for a job with this amazing company (we'll see how that turns out).
Anyway, I've carried this bag with me everywhere I've gone for about a week now and have received more compliments than I can keep up with. It really is an amazing product...you'll love it too!!!!
I ordered this briefcase along with a tote bag for my spouse - and we both couldn't be happier with the product. When I got the packages in the mail two days ago - I opened the boxes and placed each piece in my truck. By the time I got home from work - I had the best leather smell in my truck for the rest of the night. This is the real deal and have no doubts that this will last a lifetime. My briefcase already has gotten a couple of character marks and hoping to get more once it is broken in.
Overall - I cant see someone not being happy with this purchase. I have my bucket list of Saddleback products that I'm going to purchase over the next year or so - all new luggage is on the horizon.
I purchased the large thin briefcase in March 2012 and have used it for work and travel since. The quality of the bag is exceptional. One would be hard-pressed to damage this bag. It's also very functional; the ability to transform the briefcase into a backpack comes in very handy when you need to carry other pieces of luggage. I'm very happy with my purchase. Because of the quality of construction and the classic styling, I doubt that I'll need to purchase another briefcase in my lifetime.
The tagline is "They'll fight over it when your dead". I have a solution for that. I love my Saddleback Thin Briefcase so much, I am having it buried with me when I pass on. And yes, my Saddleback wallet will be in my back pocket.
I thought I would take the time to possibly help you in your decision making. The large thin brifecase (dark coffe brown) was my fist purchase from saddleback. Iabsolutly love it! the quality of the product is by far the best I have scene. this thing is, LIKE A TANK!!!! the feel of the leather and the feel of the pigskin. I AM ADDICTED TO THESE PRODUCTS.
Hi everyone, after owning the large thin briefcase for about a month now I felt it was time to leave a review. The chestnut color looks better in person than in the photo's and I can't imagine the build quality being any better. Life with the bag has been great and should only get better as the leather ages, like the other customers It's safe to say I have developed an addiction to Saddleback leather products :)
It's already been over a year since I got my dark coffee medium thin briefcase. It goes back and forth to work with me every day. Apart from slight softening of the leather and very minor wear marks it is just as new. What I love about this bag is that it works really well in a corporate environment (I work for a multinational). It fits my 15" notebook perfectly, and just stands out in a crowd shouting you mean business.
I carry it around as a briefcase, so without the carrying belt. After about three months the excessive D-rings started bothering me, so I took a Stanley knife (please don't kill me Dave) and just removed the 8 D-rings that serve no purpose if you don't use this as a backpack or strap it to your luggage. They are easily removed including the leather and you hardly notice they were ever there in the first place. I left the two D-rings to be used with the carrying belt as well as the big O-ring which I actually find kinda stylish. Very happy indeed with how it looks now!
Given how little it aged over this year and how awesome it looks after polishing it up a bit I expect I could use this bag the rest of my career (which would be more than 30 years). Only thing I could think of now would bring me off this bag is if Dave would design a briefcase version of the suitcase. That would be the ultimate briefcase imho, and I'd just have to upgrade.. (just don't go overboard on the straps/D-rings ;))
Just ordered the notebook holder to go with it. Pay a bit more for quality, it's well worth it!
I just received my Thin Briefcase in carbon and I love it! I was nervous about the color but the price was right so I figured I would take the risk. The Carbon (now discontinued) is actually coffee or a really dark chocolate brown color. It is extremely handsome and well made. I probably should have ordered the Large but the medium should be fine for my EDC. Looking forward to wearing it in.
Not unlike most who have purchased from Saddleback I was looking for something unique and more importantly something that will stand the test of time. What I wan't expecting was how brilliant the Tobacco Thin Briefcase truly was when I opened and unwrapped it from the package. Literally my first words were "WOW!….This briefcase is awesome". I am completely impressed with the design, unique character and strong makeup of this briefcase. The life that the leather takes on after use is fantastic. Every new mark just adds to the brilliance. I can now fully appreciate the statement "They'll fight over it when you're dead". Great product…Great Service.
To begin, I will admit I was one of those individuals who was reluctant to purchase a Saddleback Leather briefcase. I surfed the web and found a number of knockoffs. I actually purchased two knockoffs thinking I was making a smarter purchase. And boy was I wrong. After 2 months, my first knockoff (cost me $50) started to fall apart. Then I spent a little more money on the second knockoff (cost me $125) which started to fall apart after 4 months. I finally committed to purchasing the Saddleback Leather Thin Briefcase over 7 months ago and I am very pleased with this briefcase. It is as good today as the first day I bought it. I feel confident this bag will stay with me for many years to come. In a nutshell, I learned the hard way, that Saddleback Leather is the ONLY company to choose when purchasing a long-lasting leather briefcase or leather "anything". :-D
I've been thinking about purchasing a Saddleback bag for years, but my frugality usually got the best of me. With a recent move and job change I decided it was time to pull the trigger. I purchased the Medium Thin Briefcase in Chestnut Brown and I love it. I was worried it might be too small, and too tight for a laptop but it fits my 14" work laptop with room for additional items. It's not huge, but I suspect more room will become available as the leather relaxes. I don't usually spent large quantities of money on items which I don't need, but I plan to use this bag for the rest of my adult life and will easily get my money's worth.
I love this bag. I have zero regrets with this purchase, and that says somehthing coming form a stingy guy like myself. I now look forward to walking around with it to see how many compliments I get. Sounds ddd I know, but it's true.
I got a new job that would have me traveling to customer sites, talking to people that operate VIP jets. I wanted to "look the part", but in my own way. I wanted something well made and authentic. Like it was built just for me.
After watching Dave's videos and learning about the business, I ordered the medium bag. I travel light, with a Macbook (13" w), a few files and accessories. It's perfect. If you have a bigger laptop, get the large.
It's been perfect, and I enjoy the bag more and more. I get compliments from all walks of life, from the girl at TSA security, to CEOs, to men that make custom aircraft interiors. People can recognize that care and attention went into the bag.
Periodic conditioning with the leather milk has it looking better than new.
I know of 3 people that went to buy a Saddleback bag after seeing mine. I expect a Christmas card from Dave and crew :-)
Did a lot of research on various brands and ultimately settled on the medium in chestnut. Fits my macbook pro 13' and a bunch of other things I need each day at work. It's everything I hoped it would be and I'll get a lot of use out of it over the coming years. It's great knowing I don't have to baby the bag and that if anything goes wrong it's all under warranty. Now I just have to save up for the duffel bag...
Being the proud owner of several SBL products, it is time to write a review! I recently picked up a "Dave's Deal" DCB Thin Briefcase and absolutely love it. I am still looking for the imperfection that caused the 15% discount. This was the first "DD" I went with and I'm sorry I waited so long. The briefcase is just what I wanted. It is big enough for the things I need to bring home each day, but not big enough it's a hassle to keep with me. The strap was a little long for where I like it to sit, but it's designed to be taken in and look classy. I carry a Window's Surface Pro 2, a 5x8 SBL Moleskine Notebook and a few documents and it's more than capable of this each day. More books, documents and it would start to get crowed, but that's not what this is designed for. Slim and basic. Just the way I like most things. I look forward to loading and unloading it each day. I feel like my 3 year old and his toy box! I seriously have a SBL addiction!
Typically I'm an impulse shopper. If I see something I like, I buy it. However, this was not as simple of a process for me. I've been lusting after some SBL gear for at least 3 months now -- glancing at the website probably 2 times per day (obsessive I know). I finally decided to pull the trigger on the thin briefcase in chestnut. Man is this one handsome bag! I've been using it for a couple of days now and I love it. Looks great, feels great, smells great. Worth every penny.
I got the medium and it absolutely fits everything I need to carry. I have an HP elitebook 8470p for work. I believe it's a 15 inch laptop (13 inches horizontally). Fits perfectly, with room to spare. This was the difficult deciding factor. I was really worried the lap top wouldn't fit, but it definitely does.
The chestnut color is beautiful. Originally I was drawn to the tobacco color. But for work, I'm glad I got the chestnut -- a but more formal. I work in a formal office setting (suit and tie), so it fits in nicely. Already got some great markings on the bag and have received a TON of compliments.
The only thing missing is a place to carry a water bottle. I always have some sort of beverage with me, so that would be nice. But given its thinness I can't envision the bag with that. That being said, I'm totally hooked and figure that buying the classic briefcase is an easy way to solve my water bottle issue. Why have 1, when you can have 2 awesome bags!!
If you're on the fence... hop off and buy this thing. You won't regret it.
I recently purchased the medium sized thin briefcase in carbon. I bought it to replace my Saddleback Classic Briefcase as my every day bag. I absolutely love my classic brief but I found myself carrying fewer things on a daily basis so the classic brief has been semi-retired to my weekend and flight carry-on bag.
As with all of my SBL products, the quality is exceptional. I picked mine up on Dave's Deals (as I do with all my SBL bags) and for the life of me I cannot find a reason why this was 15% off. It looks perfect to me.
I carry a 13" MacBook Pro inside a SBL sleeve, a few medical journals, a handful of papers, MacBook charger, iPhone charger, USB drive, pens and a small notebook. All of this fits perfectly.
After reading some negative reviews I felt I wanted to address a few things that people complain about.
1. Weight. Yes, this is a heavy bag. It is made of sturdy leather and there is a lot of it. Realize this before purchasing.
2. "Stiffness". Yes, this is high quality leather and it is stiff at first. It may take a long time to break in this bag. Have you ever seen a 5+ year old SBL bag? Soft and supple...but it takes some work to get there.
3. D Rings. Thats part of the design and allure IMHO. I use a couple of them for attaching luggage tags and for clipping it to a spring clip when I put it in my trunk.
Would recommend this bag to anyone.
Great bag. Nice looking and extremely well made. The chrome is a bit much, but useful if ever needed. I've seen a lot of comments about the size of the large. Don't be scared to get the large, you're a man and should have a man size bag. If you want a satchel to fit on your messenger bike - look somewhere else.
I'm happy with my medium chestnut briefcase and can confirm that it does (just) fit a 15" MacBook Pro.
However, if you're not into dangling chrome rings, you might want to consider something else. This fairly small bag has 11 (!) chrome rings, of which 2 are useful (for the shoulder strap), 3 are marginally useful (if you want to carry the bag as a backpack, a bit gimmicky, but OK), and 6 are completely useless. They are supposedly for "lashing", but I cannot think of anything I would want to lash onto a briefcase.
