I love this backpack!
I purchased it because I didn't want to have to carry a bag on one shoulder.
It's spacious and beautifully made. The leather seems to be very durable. I get compliments EVERY time I carry it. If you're looking for a backpack with lots of space, a unique style that comes in awesome colors, I highly suggest you consider this backpack. It's worth the money and you won't be disappointed.
I have had this bag for about a year and have taken it all over the country. I haul my iPad Pro, a jacket, a glock .45 ACP and everything I need for a weekender in it. I know a lot of people wish for a flap to cover the top I get it but Saddleback has a backpack (several) with a flap. I actually searched for a bag like this for 20 years (I know it sounds crazy) but I watched Legends of the Fall and Tristen (Brad Pitt) used a bag like this when he left to go trapping. I know it wasn't a Saddleback but I loved the fact it was just a drawstring, it seemed so manly. I have taken this upland hunting full of 12 gauge shotgun shell boxes, harvested dove and used it to haul tools on my ranch (filled to the brim with an impact, wrenches screwdrivers etc) and this bag has never failed me. If you are like me and want a backpack with ONE pocket that will stand up to anything you can throw at it this is for you. I've even had it in torrential downpours and I just threw a shirt over it or a plastic bag and it protected my stuff fine. My one small piece of feedback would be regarding the straps, they need to make them about 6-8 inches longer for more burly guys and maybe add a leather pad on each for comfort. I wore it all day when in Santa Monica, riding bikes on the boardwalk and it got a little uncomfortable because it can get heavy with as much as you can carry in it. Overall you cannot go wrong with this bag just buy it.
This backpack is absolutely beautiful!! I got it in the chestnut and the color is reach and gorgeous. I cant say enough about the quality of the leather and the workmaship!! Buy this backpack without hesitation you will not regret it. Thank you Saddleback Im looking forard to getting a lot more.
I am 5'5" roughly 130lbs, I actually ordered the bag when it first came out and returned it because it was too big for me and waited patiently for a smaller version to come out. It never did.
In May I purchased this bag in CHESTNUT for a trip to Munich and Prague with my 4 year old son, great decision! I loved all the packing options I had while still being hands free. I could take it with me as a backpack on a bike to the store or on hiking day trips. I packed snacks, drinks, books, toys and extra clothes with room to spare. It looked great as a "big purse" for evenings out. I also brought the SBL small leather clutch purse with me when I just need the basics (phone, wallet, keys and lip-balm).
Mostly I wear it with one strap over one shoulder. If the shoulder straps had a padded removable option I would buy it, it can get quite heavy when fully loaded. Also, If the removable handle was a tad longer I could wear it over the shoulder more comfortably, I do it anyway but its tight. It does get very heavy using the removable handle in the crook of the arm, so I only do that when the bag is packed light. Love the ease of in and out with the drawstrings, they are still snug and continue to stay closed. No worries about rain getting in, I just place a scarf on top of the stuff in the bag. Interior phone slot also works for tissues, pens, hand lotion or lip balms. Tablet interior pocket is deep, I typically put small misc items in there and sometimes my phone. The bag interior is deep and dark, sometimes its hard to see in the bag, placing things in bright colored pouches is helpful.
Just tonight, because I can only fly with a "personal item limited to 16"x14"x12." I packed it for a 4 day NYC visit. I am impressed. Here is what I packed:
SHOES: 1 pair of high heels, 1 pair of reef sandals, 1 pair of Birkenstocks,
CLOTHES: 4 light dresses, bathing suit, cover up, sunhat, pj's, summer scarf, skort and tank top,
PERSONALS: quart sized Ziploc with toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner etc filled, another quart sized Ziploc with bras/undies, large round-brush, Umuragi mini clutch purse filled with makeup. SBL Slim wallet and iphone.
There is still room for an ipad and some snacks.
Color note: I am loyal to Chestnut and own lots of chestnut SBL pieces. I was torn on what color to get because my head said "matchy matchy" and my heart said they are all beautiful. The Suela leather contrasting pieces darkened rather quickly, so if you are someone who really loves the contrasting feature I would suggest DCB or black.
I love this elegant bag and appreciate the options with different carrying styles and packing volume. I have been using it non-stop since I purchased it. It gets noticed by both men and women, young and old. I also have the SBL large tote (old style), which is great as an EDC when I want a structured bag with open easy access to ipad, magazines, notepads, books, folders etc, its a great bag for meetings.
Thank you Suzette, Dave and the SBL family!
I'm not one to leave reviews online very often, but this bag was simply too beautiful not to write home about! I waited with baited breath to get this baby in the mail (in the chestnut) and I was not disappointed. This bag is a piece of art. The deep chestnut color is gorgeous. The bag is indeed just an open deep bucket, so I'll carry most stuff in individual pouches. My 15" Macbook Pro fits in here just fine, but is on par with the very top of the bag. You can definitely still cinch the bag closed, but the Mac won't be underneath the cinched part, if that makes sense. I've wanted a Saddleback bag for some time now and gathered a few pennies for this purchase. I'm so glad I did. My only suggestion would be some sort of flap on the inside (as others have suggested) in the case of rain. But it's not a deal-breaker by any means. I might also suggest a wider phone pocket for larger smart phones. So grateful for folks who have the gift of craftsmanship and can make such lovely things.
I have several of Dave's bags. I have given them as gifts to people I love. They are expensive but they have staying power.
This is my diaper bag. It's easy to pack, opens wide so that I can retrieve what I need quickly, and the draw string holds the bag closed snug. The fit is extremely comfortable on the shoulders even when it is packed to the brim. The interior clip handle is handy to grab and I often use it to snap my keys on. Now that I have a toddler and have carried this bag for a while it has been chewed on, drawn on, splattered in heaven knows what and it just keeps getting softer and prettier without losing any functionality. This bag is STURDY. I love being able to have my hands free without looking like a student. I'll be carrying this well after I have the need for a diaper bag.
I treat myself to a SBL piece whenever I get a raise or promotion. This year I decided to invest in the tobacco bucket backpack, to switch out with my chestnut tote for a more casual work bag. I *love* it.
The leather is thick and luscious. The bag stands on its own and opens all the way up so you can get clear to the bottom with perfect visibility. I can get my laptop, umbrella, cord bag, and clutch in and still have room for a sack of lunch and a sweater. (I had to buy the camera bag for a lunchbox last year, as my lunch would not fit in my Tote.)
As another reviewer noted, it does soften up and cinch down nice and tight, although I started tossing a shawl on top, as I don't have my laptop in a sleeve.
I have noticed that if all I have is a laptop, it wants to bang around in there if I am wearing it over both shoulders while I walk. I need to invest in the SBL laptop sleeve.
After a rainy conference weekend in Indianapolis, I decided to give it a coat of waterproofing, and wow–I love the darker saddle color that it became. I may have to buy more tobacco now that the waterproofed version fits into my wardrobe better.
I'll try not to repeat many of the awesome comments that have already been shared, but don't hold me to it. Prior to my most recent purchase. I owned only two SBL products. The medium Bifold Wallet and the Business Card Wallet . Both in Carbon black. However I have been a fan of SBL for many years, only from a wish-I-had-the-funds stand point in order to make a purchase. Now, a little older and I must say wiser, the opportunity arose which allowed me to not only satisfy my thirst for owning one of their beautiful bags, but surprise my wife with this beautiful Bucket Backpack for her birthday. A few days prior to her birthday I made the decision to totally go overboard and not only surprised her with the Bucket Backpack (in Tobacco), but the thin Luggage tag for it, the women's medium long Bifold Wallet (not sure if that is the exact name of the wallet, but you get the idea) and the small Note Pad. Then it was my turn. I purchased for me the Classic Medium Briefcase, a large size Luggage Tag, the large Note Pad and the Small sized Pouch (it was $99.00) not sure if this is the correct name for this item either, but for those of you that are true SBL fans you know what I'm trying to describe. Now with that being said a part of the order was out of stock in the color I wanted (tobacco), so Patty (the customer service rep) who took my order suggested a gift certificate, I thought OK what a great idea. I was given the option of a paper, email or leather certificate. I thought leather, why the heck not its an all leather product order right! After having everthing placed and paid for the waiting game was on (even though I paid for overnight delivery) it seemed like an eternity. Finally it arrived, upon opening each box for Inspection my home was immediatrly filled with the awesome aroma of LEATHER! Thankfully the wife was out shopping. Upon inspection I realized that the Gift Certificate was nowhere to be found. I didn't panic, I just put in a call to customer service. With no exaggeration what so ever SBL has to have the most friendly, and professional down to earth staff in the Country! After a brief explanation I was given a speedy resolve to my problem. Even though there would be nothing they could do for me right then due to the admin office being closed and it was Friday evening it wouldn't be until Tuesday when I would have the gift certificate in hand, guess what, today is Tuesday and its in hand and boy even the gift certificate is above reproach. You guys at SBL are a class act that no other can follow! Customer service called me on Saturday expressing their concern and offering apology after apology. I informed them that the apologies were not necessary we're human, things happen, but after a few more emails from them and a surprise gift (SBL Leather key Fob) with the delivery of the gift certificate I told myself that I just can't keep this to myself. Thus my review. I wish I could say that it ends there, but when perusing my emails I came upon one more from SBL that I had not read as of yet. Believe it or not people they, SBL had snuck in a email Gift Certificate to me in the amount of $50.00, who does that huh.... SBL apparently! Susan, Patty Dave and all the other SBL employees my hat is tipped to you. I am now working on my next wish list (I hope to make at least one of these new wishes come true in a few months from now). I must say all of the items I've purchased since the Carbon Black medium wallet and business card wallet have been in Tobacco, and I love the color. I can't wait for the beautiful petina that is to follow! Thank you everyone, you guys ROCK! Bill
To be totally honest, I have to admit that I snubbed this bag when I first saw it. I thought, nah, and did not give it another look...until recently. For the last few months I have been searching for a bag that is easy to get into and big enough to just toss stuff in and go. I could not find anything anywhere and I didn't feel comfortable using a standard backpack like students carry. That was when I was browsing through Saddleback bags again and caught another glance of the Bucket Backpack. I read reviews and watched all the videos I could find, and finally decided to pull the trigger on one in Black. I have to say, I don't know why I was concerned about it at all. It is pretty much exactly what I wanted. I love it. The leather and the lining is beautiful. The shape is perfect. The only concern I have is with the clips on the handle that comes with it. They are just not heavy duty enough for a bag that can potentially be pretty heavy. Some people might find the pockets inside a little small. I don't carry a lot of technology with me, so the pockets are perfect for my needs. I used one of my square cord wraps and put it around the carry handle to add a little extra oomph to it. It fits perfectly and looks pretty nice. I highly recommend this bag. I don't think you will be disappointed.
I have eyed the bucket backpack for a while (about four months), I finally decided to treat myself.
I must say, it is a total winner! The leather is very thick and durable, but yet not stiff. I love the fact that there are no breakable parts, such as zippers and or snaps. I was a little concerned that over time the drawstring used to close the bag would begin to weaken, but I found a way to close the bag by using the handle strap. I believe that has take care of that concern. I truly believe you get what you pay for, and with this bag you are getting just that, a quality product. I really believe I will have this bag for many many years to come. (unless I give in, and give it to my daughter) LOL
I bought this as a gift but I have to have one for myself, now. This is a perfect EDC. It's light enough to pack around full of text books but substantial enough that the weight of the books won't demolish the bag in under a year.
this bag is the perfect size, perfect weight, perfect simplicity for the quick jaunt to the coffee shop.
I just got it, the quality is wonderful very practical the smell of the leather is just incredible the craftsmanship is out of this world, just perfect. I am going to order the wallet now to match my new backpack
Awesome bag and will buy more than once to send to loved ones although not for the ones that stays over in a country that rains often because the lack of the top cover worries me that the valuables could be exposed to outside elements. I am willing to pay extra if this bag is upgraded into the one that has a cover on top or something that can keep the insides from worry
The bucket is awesome as are the other 7 or 8 items I have purchased over the years. BUT - it would be SUPER awesome if it had a flap or top cover of some sort that would protect what you're hauling around in the rain. That is the only drawback. I transition back and forth from my briefcase to the bucket depending on the weather. Even went so far as to cut up an old leather purse (not a saddleback product!) to create a cover I could insert in case it starts raining and I've already left the house. Lack of a cover is the only thing keeping this review from 5 stars. With the adjustable straps it's a very comfortable fit as a backpack - no matter what you're wearing.
I already have the Chestnut Messenger bag for work and needed a light weight weekend bag to carry all my stuff around. As a guy, and not wanting to carry a man bag, this Bucket Backpack fit my needs perfectly. The leather is a bit stiff to start out but will break in with use. I was concerned about the top opening letting rain in but unless you are fighting a New Orleans downpour I don't think it will be a problem as you can cinch it really tight and almost have no opening for water to enter. I also purchased a luggage cable lock which I ran through the cinch rings to close and lock the bag for the safety of my phone, computer, and wallet. It is also useful to lock your bag to a fixed item if you need to leave your bag unattended. If you are looking for a light weight super tough leather backpack I highly recommend the Bucket Backpack. Now on to my next quest of the perfect Saddleback weekend duffel bag! One more thing, I think Dave should send me each new item before release for a full and honest review! Did you hear me Dave! Dave!
Before I write my review, I need to say what a Saddleback addict I really am. I love the look, smell and feel of full grain leather. I love the early leather, and the current leather. I have ten SBL products at this time, all in tobacco of one shade or another but have had more that I either traded or sold for one reason or another. I have also just ordered an iPad Air 2 case, and am looking forward to trying it out. I got this bucket backpack for my vacation this year. It was so easy and comfortable to load up and just throw over my shoulder. There is no fumbling with any kind of clasp, zipper or hook to open it, just untie it and it opens very wide. It holds a lot too! I have my ipad in a sleeve, a big wallet, a cable bag, my sunglass case, my coin case, moleskine in cover, credit card wallet, and there is still room for more. It is currently my EDC as I sold my purses when I made this purchase. It isn't too heavy, even for a small in stature female lol. Now, what will my next purchase be? ;)
Here's the deal...I'm not really a backpack kind of girl. I like cross-body bags. However, I'm totally in love with my Bucket Backpack! I'm currently using it as a diaper bag, and it's amazing!
I had been using my Love 41 Bucket Bag as my diaper bag, and it was fabulous. But, that meant I had given up my Bucket Bag for all the kid gear, and I just couldn't have that because I previously used the bag all the time! So naturally, I had to buy another amazing SBL product! No complaints there.
Although I'm not much for backpacks, I love this. Truly. This backpack is comfortable to wear, and the backpack style is extremely convenient when I need my hands free to wrangle the stroller or other kids of mine. I love the handle on top as well; it makes it easy to move around when I don't need it actually on my back. The closure is simple and easy. This bag can hold so much, it's awesome! I would say it's deceptively large (although it doesn't seem huge to wear or handle) and I like it. The cell phone pocket and larger pocket inside are great. Those two pockets are enough to keep my personal things separated in the bag, but it's not excessive. The leather is soft and not too stiff, yet there is enough structure to allow the bag to stand upright, which is perfect. I also love that this bag is nice enough to haul to church, yet casual enough for errands and a stop at the park. I won't always be using this as the diaper bag, but when those days are over, I'm confident this bag will continue to be used! It's awesome!
I'm currently in college, and this bag is perfect for running around campus. I used to use a hiking backpack, but nothing fit very well. This bag is huge, and holds so much stuff that it's easy to over pack. The quality of the leather is amazing, and while I've only had the bag for a bit more than two months it's holding up really well. The leather tie that closes the bag does loosen up over time, but I've just taken to tying it in in a knot and everything stays closed. The open top can be a little annoying when it snows, so I keep a waterproof cover in the bag at all times. If the bag were to ever be redesigned, I would suggest putting some sort of flap over the top just to keep prying hands and weather out of the bag. The open top also means that while I love this bag, I would be quite hesitant to travel abroad with it as a carry on. I would be far too afraid that someone would be able to get into it. Several people have positively commented on the looks of the bag. Overall, I love the bag and I would certainly recommend it.
OK, the Classic Bucket Backpack is a listed as a women's product, but I decided not to care too much about the classification. The CBBP (in classy, thick Tobacco Brown) sure looks rugged enough not to cause smirks when I wear it. The size is perfect for a day pack and I can easily fit lots of stuff inside. A few days ago I had to pack in my lunch, a 13" MacBook Air and seven iPads (and they weren't Minis, either) plus all the cables and two books. They all fit in nicely. Having rather wide shoulders, I've had to adjust the straps to their maximum, but they're OK as they are now. Well, I have to say that the the backpack also looks great when my wife wears it. So, in my books this CBBP is more like a unisex article, good for her and good for him.
As a life-long student I own a dozen book bag / back back style items. Now that I'm 50 I wanted something a bit more fitting my age, but not the classic backpack image. As soon as I saw the new bucket design I knew that was it. It is bigger than I thought with lots of room. I love the two interior pockets at the back...perfect for my phone and wallet. I use the small strap, not as a handle, but as a cord for my car keys to hang on inside the bag. The leather is thick and a bit stiffer at the back to give the item some form. I put both back straps on one side as I wear it over one shoulder most of the time. You will get looks as there is no one else out there with an item like this! Another first-class leather item to add to my Saddleback collection!
