The Perfect Utility Bag

by

The perfect utility bag. Exceptional construction with easy access to the pockets makes this one of the most useful bags I own. And it looks good.

I love the extra seems and framing of the main compartment to give and keep its structure.

Highly recommend!

This is a well done duffel

by

I have this 5 Pocket Duffel Bag, along with a few other mountainback pieces. This bag is very well constructed, reinforced, the perfect size, and easy to use. I have a side pocket duffel that is much heavier, bulkier, and harder to carry with the strap. The front pockets fold over and are easy to use. The grommets are reinforced with leather, which also adds to the look of the bag, and the inside of the main compartment near the opening is ringed with leather to help keep its shape, and make it easier to pack and unpack. The leather on the backside and bottom is split making the bag easier to carry. Very well done duffel, my favorite so far.

Design and Function

by

Let me start off by saying the design and function of this bag is amazing. It truly is the perfect blend of style and utility. Although I haven't owned it for long, it is a superior duffle in every way to anything else I have owned.

The pockets are very well sized, the new 'grenade style' opening straps work well both in closing and opening (certainly faster than traditional buckles) and look 'cool'. I agree with Dave as the leather reinforcement gives the bag a nice balance of structure without being stiff.

The construction is very good except for one small area on the top handle hand stitching. It's frankly a trivial complaint but on $500 canvas bag a little knit-picking is important. The stitching is a little sloppy and the rivet touches in one area which over time may lead to the stitch pulling loose. This certainly won't affect function and most will never notice this but It's worth mentioning on an otherwise flawless bag.

These bags are simply the best. I love the look and the feel of the waxed canvas. Hi-five to saddleback and Dave for making these amazing products.

Story

Like anything else, a bag is only as good as its weakest point. A big part of the Mountainback approach to designing is identifying those points where bags usually tend to fail, and then designing stuff in a way so those fail points disappear. The way the shoulder strap attachment grommets are constructed is borrowed from something I learned from boat sail construction down in New Zealand. The handle is another place where bags can run into problems. So I made the handle from the thickest leather I could find, and then riveted it through the canvas to another really thick leather plate.

But tough won’t get you far without functionality. I sewed a strip of thick leather around the lip of the main compartment, so the bag stays wide open and stiff when you’re packing. And there’s four roomy exterior pockets for organizing and quick access to your stuff.
