"... Saddleback Leather no longer discriminates against any cow on the basis of age, appearance, lactose intolerance... if the beast has a natural marking or brand, or whether or not they worship the Divine Bovine."
Truth is, sometimes beauty is only skin deep... like with cows. Their poetry is notoriously terrible, but man, their hides are nature's art. We don't believe that flawlessness equals beauty. Beauty is when we're able to see something as it really is.
This is true with humans too. There are lots of quality people who are really beautiful not in spite of, but because of the marks life has given them.
We hitchhiked around Mexico for about two weeks, wearing sombreros, blankets, and our Three Amigos t-shirts we’d found at the market. On our trip, we’d stopped by this place called Las Grutas de Tolantongo in the state of Hidalgo.
Tolantongo was this deep canyon out in the desert, and at the bottom was a baby blue river flowing out of a mountain. It’s blue because of all the calcium deposits that make the rocks white. We made our way to the bottom to the canyon and discovered a mountain there that was oozing water, hot, cold, just shooting out of different places. In one of the caves there was a river, and it had super clear water in it, so we walked up into the mouth. It was pitch black in there- the only thing you could see was rushing water. It was was probably four feet deep on the side, six to eight feet deep in the center, and five feet wide. We followed it back to where it was spewing out of a wall. We get up to the mouth, where the water was rushing out really hard, and we jumped in front of it. It was like a huge fire hydrant and it shot us out thirty, forty feet down the river in the blink of an eye. So we did it again.
We learned that if we floated, we’d be pulled to the side and sucked back in towards the mouth like a whirlpool, so we could jump again and again. We’d do Superman poses, backwards, forwards, all positions. We could have jumped with a tube if we’d had one. We were there for hours. That’s where I jacked up my leg. It still bothers me today. I jumped out in front of the mouth, feet in front of me, and I hit my back. My left leg was totally straight and it jammed super hard. It’s never been the same since. That story doesn’t have much to do with this wallet, but be careful when you travel. There’s always stuff that can hurt you and ruin your time, and pickpockets are one of them. This wallet is slim enough that it’s almost completely unnoticeable. Pickpockets go for big, easy wallets first. With this, you’ll be a little more protected.
Legitimately the best wallet I've owned. I carry cash in my other pocket anyways because I make tips at my job and 40 ones doesn't fit in any wallet. I have probably ten cards in mine and they stay there securely until I want to remove them.
Thin, substantial, quality

I wanted something I could put four or five cards into and forget about and this sleeve is perfect for that. The leather is nice and thick but the total package is still thinner than my other wallet, even when the other wallet is empty. Some of the other reviews worried me a little bit but I bought this anyway and I'm glad I did. Looks like it's made to outlast its owner.

Disappointed

I've got to give Saddleback very high marks for their service and craftsmanship, but I'm sorry to say I'm disappointed with the Tobacco leather used to make my card sleeve. Based on my buddy's older ID wallet, I was expecting nice, stiff, slick leather that would age well and take on a nice patina. Instead, this feels like it was cut from an old pair of suede tennis shoes. It's floppy, fuzzy, and unlined (rough) on the inside. I know this is a great price point, but I think just about any other sleeve would be a better buy, even at double the cost. That said, I'd gladly buy another Saddleback sleeve if it was available in the old leather. I'm happy with the company, but not this product.
Love it.

This is great, it holds all my important cards. It's very sturdy and I'm surprised at how much it has stretched to fit more cards. I love the little notch in the bottom that makes it easy to slide the cards out.
Awesome!

Love the sleeve it's perfect for keeping work IDs and proximity badges.... perfect size, leather smells great! $20 bucks well spent - now just stock the Tobacco pouch!
Every Day Carry With Class

I purchased the Sleeve Wallet to carry my security access badge and a few business cards. Iâve been using a nylon credential wallet from MAXpedition and it has served me well. I discovered the Saddleback Sleeve Wallet and instantly wanted to upgrade to leather. I made several product inquiries to the staff at Saddleback and all were very helpful answering my questions. My Sleeve Wallet arrived in a timely fashion and was packaged and wrapped with care. The tobacco color is very rich and full of character. The leather is a nice thickness and expertly sewn and finished. My card is easily read by the security sensor so the thickness of the leather is not an issue. This is a beautifully crafted, simple, and very sharp addition my every day carry portfolio. Looking forward to breaking it in!

This wallet is perfect for all you really need. I carry a couple of credit cards, some cash, my drivers license and a couple of business cards. Nothing to break, plastic to wear out and light in your pocket. A must own item.
Perfect

I have owned more wallets than I care to admit. Most recently, I was usinng a money clic that was lost inn an autoaccident. I replaced it with this wallet - it's perfect! Not to big but handles exactly what you need. All of the stuff I don't use stay in my SBL Briefcase.
The Perfect Business Card Case
by anonymous - verified purchaser | 7/24/2014 9:12 am
I bought this to use as a business card carrying case and it's perfect. It holds on to the cards tightly, but still has enough extra width that I can squeeze it a bit to open it up and slide the cards out better. The standard business card size is a little longer than credit cards, but they fit in this wallet perfectly. It also has more character than any other business card case in existance.
Quintessential, Yet Simple

Living in a city like Philadelphia, carrying a smaller wallet that is somewhat undetectable is a must. This wallet is everything a man can need for those purposes. It's totally undetectable in my back pocket of my jeans, while also being unnoticed in my suit jacket as well. The simplicity of this piece is what makes it beautiful. It may not look like it holds a lot, but the leather will stretch to allow you to carry a license, insurance cards, debit & credit cards, and cash without becoming to crazy thick. Hope you enjoy this purchase if you make it!!!
Perfect

Exactly what I was looking for. Simple, big enough for an ID and a few credit cards, beautiful leather, and top notch construction. Invisible in my pocket, and unlike bulky wallets, when I sit down, I don't even realize it's there. No more lower back problems from sitting on a bulky wallet!
Superb

I have lower back problems and was looking to downsize my wallet by carrying only what i need on a daily basis. This leather wallet sleeve was just what i need. It holds a few cards and folded cash until it softens and then it will hold a few more! Its quality and construction appear to be first rate too. Cant wait to give it to my grandchildren in about 20 years so they can give it to theirs.!
I use it every day.

I use another Saddleback wallet for my ID, cash, and cards. I I use this to carry a challenge coin. The coin has started to wear an imprint into the leather, which I really like. It is slowly breaking in and becoming softer and more supple with use. It really is awesome.

I own the window wallet and I use this one for my drivers license and nod debit card. Perfect for those occasions where you don't need everything plus the kitchen sink when you go out. Great buy... my forth product from Dave. More to follow...team, simplicity matters and cannot ever be replaced. Bravo!
Great Single Pocket Design!

I purchased this wallet three months ago as I was searching for a very minimal designed wallet for some cards and a small about of cash. At first, like with any leather product, it was very tough to get cards in and out. It did not take very long to break in. The wallet really does get better with age and I see this on a weekly basis. My load will vary from week to week and the wallet forms perfectly to whatever I need. I have tried a lot of other wallets (from some very high-end brands) and this is the best.
A Great Simple Wallet
by Michael - verified purchaser | 7/24/2014 9:11 am
I've been carrying this wallet for about two months now. I was looking for slim wallet to replace my old bifold, and the wallet sleeve was what I was looking for. It's a very simple design, light weight, and great looking. It's hardly noticeable in my pocket, and it's light and slim enough to carry in the chest pocket of a suit coat.
The wallet was very stiff at first, but it only took about a week or so to get past that initial break-in stage, and it continues to soften and get better looking. I only carry 3 cards and 1-3 folded bills. Now that it's softened up a bit there's no difficulty sliding the cards in and out.
If you're the type who doesn't use a lot a cash and doesn't use you wallet as a file-folder for receipts, ticket stubs, photos, etc., then this wallet is a great option, but if that is you, then this wallet is not right for you.
Also, it's the least expensive leather product that Saddleback current sells. This is your gateway to quality leather.
The Best, Really
by Richard - verified purchaser | 7/24/2014 9:11 am
I bought this one after my old one (some off brand, shiny black thing with a metal money clip that ate holes through three pockets in three pairs of pants like a hungry caterpillar) 'wore out'.
No comparison. None.
This is a wonderful looking, well-built work of art in the shape of a wallet. I hesitate to say rugged, although I am sure that it is tough, because that would make you think that it is not elegant. Its simplicity, thick leather, and tight stitching buoy its obvious elegance and guarantee years of use.
I am probably going to buy a black one, too.
I really love it.
Slim & Slick

I don't carry a wallet, I bought this to use as a business card holder to be tucked away in an iPad case somewhere. When I got it in the mail, it looked, felt, and smelled great, so I had to carry it around with me for a few days.
Excellent front pocket design, very high quality leather with a nice embossed 'Saddleback' emblazoned on the front. Very smooth, easy to get cards in & out. I normally carry one or two cards loose in my front pocket. This wallet is almost as invisible in a pocket as those two cards. Well worth the money, buy it.
fabulous exactly what I had hoped for

Fabulous product, extremely well made, very fast shipping. Exactly as described, better than anticipated. Can not say enough good things about the craftsmanship and quality. Perfect fit for several cards and some cash.
Great for a minimalist

I usually never write reviews on products unless it's really bad or really good. In this case, really good and more. I purchased the chestnut color a few weeks ago and haven't been more happy with this purchase. Before, I used to carry a bifold that carried 4-5 cards max and thought that this was slim as it gets, wrong. I received this sleeve expediently and was excited to use it. Like what others have said, was stiff at first and hard to get cards in but it has some flex to it now after some wear and tear. After 2-3 weeks of everyday use, stitching is still as good, no fraying and the leather looks good as new. I carry 3 cards in it and feels like I always leave my wallet at home because I can't feel anything back there. Great for those who like to travel light. Would definitely recommend this wallet to others! Great job Saddleback!
Great stuff

I ordered this wallet sleeve because I like the idea of a minimalist card and cash holder. Based on the Saddleback webpage content especially Dave's Q&A section I was convinced that these guys produce and sell great products. After I've ordered the wallet I was really blown away by the friendly and competent service of the Saddleback team. I've received my wallet yesterday and I have to say that the quality of this wallet is amazing. I can recommend this wallet to anyone who is looking for rugged quality product and a simple and functional design.
First of hopefully a few more

This wallet is exactly what's I'd been looking for, and I've no doubt it'll last the 100 years! The quality is obvious, and I certainly hope to add more of your products over the years.
Great Design and Functionality

Purchased the wallet sleeve with the ID wallet since it was way affordable and would be nice on nights out when I only wanted a few cards.
Like the Id wallet, it exceeded expectations. It is a minimal design but built with quality material.
Besides the beautiful leather sensory overload, it is a very functional design. I carried up to about 5 cards in it and even had 4 folded bills(folded into quarters). It does not appear to ever be able to hold half folded bills.
It is easy to use with the 'push-up- tab' at the bottom and the money doesn't get stuck in it either.
I'm planning to order a bunch as stocking stuffers.
Superb

Natural Marking
We wanted to let you know that this was recently added to the cow hand hoof-book, in the section governing acceptable hides:
"...Saddleback Leather no longer discriminates against any cow on the basis of age, appearance, lactose intolerance...if the beast has a natural marking or brand, or whether or not they worship the Divine Bobine."
Truth is, sometimes beauty is only skin deep...like with cows.
Leather is special because it's durable, natural, and it tells a story about a cow's life. Maybe the leather in your bag was from a real Casanova. Maybe he got tipped a lot. Maybe the bulls really liked the way she moooved. We don't know for sure, but we want you to see those stories and add your own as you carry your bag around.
Just to be clear, some leather definitely does not make the cut, but a lot of what has been rejected in the past for being too naturally beautiful, will.
We cut the nasty looking marks out and throw them away and the cool or insignificant ones we leave. When you want to know what the story is behind one of the marks on your leather, look it up here.
Stretch Marks
Marbly lines generally regarded as not cool marks on mothers, unless the mother is a cow or pig and then they're more than cool.
Stretch marks appear when the animal grows quickly or gets really fat for a time in life for some reason.
Veins
The veins and stretch marks are what give the leather that cool marbled look.
Did you know that if they slaughter a cow in the winter in a place where it's really really cold, that it'll have more pronounced veins because the blood rises closer to the surface to keep them warm.
Wrinkles
Almost all thick leather wrinkles when it is bent back on itself. Kind of like when you squat down in a pair of leather shoes and wrinkles appear about 4" from the toe.
Insect Bites
These pesky insects don't leave cows alone either. Ticks, mosquitoes and other bug bites show themselves as a tiny black or white spot.
You ever see birds sitting on top of cows? They're filling their craws with these bugs.
Pores
It's common to see very fine holes on leather if you look closely. Cows have hair too and if it isn't completely removed in the initial tanning process then you'll see them.
Scars
Itching oneself against or running scared through barbed wire, mesquite bushes or cactus will cause long thin black lines. If the bulls liked the way the cow moooved, then she'll get hoof marks which are usually up to an inch wide and a few inches long.
The bigger scars happen when they got gored or kicked hard. Two small single black scars not far apart are often bat bites. Those are found on cows in more jungly areas.
Callouses
If a cow sleeps on it's right side for years or has a habit of rubbing one spot with his horns or any kind of regular friction in one place, you get a callous.
These markings are usually smooth, not raised, small and circular in shape.
Brands
The mark of a cow well loved. Brands can be shapes, letters and numbers. We only use the nice and smooth healed up ones.
In third world countries, some ranchers don't have enough money to buy a branding iron, so they heat up a piece of iron and draw a picture on the cow. Whatever's clever, right?
Which leather is better, the old or the new?
The "new" leather is the same quality as the "old" leather. We just stopped letting some of the cooler marks fall onto the cutting room floor.
Will the scars and marks hurt the construction?
Nope. Any mark or scar that is possibly weaker than other areas, we cut out and throw away.
Are the animals tortured before they are slaughtered?
Absolutely not!!! With some pigs, we do use waterboarding and sensory deprivation techniques previous to slaughtering them, but cows do not require any special handling.
What if I want a lot of marks?
If you don't get lots of marks, please don't return it in hopes of the next one having more. But hopefully, the Divine Bovine will smile upon you and you'll receive a bag that tells a cool story. If it doesn't have a lot of story on it, then you'll have to add your own by using it hard.
What if I don't want any marks?
Not all cows live hard lives and so not all hides have a lot of scars. If you order Carbon or Coffee, the thin or small scars won't stand out much. They show up nicely on Tobacco though. People who like the Chestnut color (red/brown) seem to like more perfect leather and we're very aware of that. It's not right or wrong; just a preference. Generally, we cut the big scars out of the chestnut leather, but there will always be a few here and there. If you get your bag and you really don't like it, send it back and we'll take care of you. We're not worried in the slightest. And remember, it's not the scars that make the bag, it's the bag. The marks just add to it.
Can I get Chestnut and Coffee with cool marks?
The amount of markings on Chestnut will be less than on other colors because we cut more of the bigger scars out of that leather. We know that, in general, Chestnut people aren't too big on large scars. Marks tend to blend in with the Coffee, but you'll still see them.
Are some scars more valuable, or sought after than others?
Yes. Absolutely! For example, most of our designs have pigskin interiors, which generally have a smooth matte quality. Often, these pieces will have a scrape or scar-type marking on it. These are, in fact, scars associated with the romantic life of the pig. More than most other animals, the pig is known for its violent mating behaviors and is aggressive, selfish and generally demeaning to its female partner. The male pig bites, scratches, gouges and anything else he can think of to have his way (in some rare cases pigs have been known to use other strategies, like cleaning the pigpen, bringing flowers, showing kindness to her relatives, etc,). Thus, many female pigs, at least the desirable ones, are pretty scarred-up. In the pig culture, this is a sign of status. The best hides for our purposes (i.e. creating the best leather bag possible) are the female hides because they are so much larger than the males and therefore we can get larger solid pieces (and girls just have better skin). Therefore, our pigskin will sometimes have various scarring patterns. We refer to these as 'love scars'.
How will this affect my warranty?
This won't have any effect on an existing warranty or a new warranty.
Why haven't you done this before?
Saddleback started and grew strong exactly because of allowing scars and marks and brands on our leather. It's what made us into who we are today. The marks became less and less frequent since the people cutting the leather didn't understand why anyone would want leather with imperfections. So, they thought they were helping us and and it just kind of stayed that way until now.
If you are using more of the leather per hide, will the price go down?
The marks and scars have always represented a very small amount of leather. And actually, the bags now may cost us more since the leather cutters spend extra time placing various scars and brands, which they didn't do before.
Can I see what it will look like before I buy it since this makes the leather so much different from bag to bag?
We have some pictures of the sorts of marks that might be on your bag, but we don't have shots of every piece. We wouldn't ever send out something that we wouldn't send to our own mom and dad. You'll love what you get.
Is this truly cooler leather or are you just trying to save some money on cheaper hides?
I'm pretty sure that if you ask anyone who's been watching Saddleback for any length of time, they'll tell you that we're not so much about the money as we are about creating things that bring people joy. It's art and it's quality and we just like it. It makes us happy. And don't forget, Saddleback has a steady history of constantly improving quality in design and materials. There have been several changes to designs that cost us more money to make, but that we did for no other reason than to raise the quality bar. It just seems like the right thing to do. So, to go against everything that we are known for, stand for and teach would be really inconsistent and pretty risky too. And the hides are the same expensive quality hides that we've used for years, but we're just not cutting out as many of the stories.
If this is so great--as you say--why are you the only ones doing this?
I suspect that other companies think that nobody would like it and they're not willing to take the risk to learn if it's true or not. Also, there are so many variables in the marks and scars on each hide that it's very difficult to teach a person which ones to cut out and which ones to leave. It could get very expensive if the cutters aren't trained well and they allowed some of those nasty looking lumpy scars onto the bags.
Can I still buy the old style if I just don't like this change?
Once we're out, we're out, but surely you'll be able to find some on eBay as people are wanting to sell theirs so they can buy one of these.
Will the colors be different?
Tobacco and Carbon are different, but Coffee and Chestnut are the same.
Is the leather going to feel different besides just looking different?
It's the same leather with a different look.
I bought a Tobacco bag 6 months ago but now I want this new Tobacco. Can I trade?
I would suggest that you either sell yours on eBay, which you may get more for, or you look into aging your bag more rapidly. Get on Youtube to see techniques on how to age leather. Remember you loved that bag enough to buy it. You may be pleasantly surprised. The only difference between this tobacco and our last tobacco is the amount of clear and natural oils and waxes on the hide.
