Purchased this item in August 2016. My job requires multiple signed delivery invoices (some with payments attached) on a daily basis. I use this Envelope Clutch to hold my weekly trip envelopes and expense receipts. I like it because at the end of my work day it fits perfectly into my Saddleback Leather Messenger Bag. My old nylon binder had to be carried separately and had to be replaced periodically. I bought this Envelope Clutch in Black to match my Messenger Bag. The Envelope Clutch is very professional looking and very durable. It is large enough to fit a couple of magazines and/or a standard sized legal pad. I like it and recommend it.
What can I say....A LOT!! SBL Customer Service is second to none. I ordered a DD clutch back in Feb. Got it in and well it frankly was to small (see previous review). I did not occur to me to measure it until late one night I was reading the reviews on here and looked up the exchange policy (remember it was DD). So the next day I called and spoke with Meredith (I believe). She advised that they would absolutely exchange it. I have never had to exercise this policy so I had no idea how it would work. Anyway she sent me the return label, I got it packed up and sent it on its way. OH i advised her that I had conditioned the clutch and tried to stretch it to make it work. She said no problem send it back. It was left to right almost an inch shorter that a piece of paper so no way it would hold and envelope. Anyway, my "new" clutch was on backorder for a few days but I got it today. IT IS PERFECT IN EVERY WAY!! In fact I am 100% sure they replaced my DD clutch with a new non DD clutch. I could not be more happy with this product. I have a meeting later today and have already loaded it up and have it in my tobacco front pocket briefcase with my tobacco small moleskin cover and DCB legal pad holder!! Love this company and their products. Just wish I could find a tobacco coffee cozie to purchase from someone secondhand. ;)
I will start with the construction of this product is second to non. I own several Saddleback products 15-20 I guess. I actually like it but it will not work for what I purchased it for holding documents. In the video it even states that it will hold "legal" documents. THIS IS A BIG MISTAKE! No way it will hold a sheet of legal paper without folding it in half. For that matter the one I got will not hold an envelope well. The envelope is exactly the size of the interior so it does not slide in and out well. I have tried to stretch it a couple of times. The leather loosens up and is softer to the touch but the inside did not get any bigger. I can honestly say this is the first "poorly designed" product that I have gotten from Saddleback. It just needs to be a little wider (1/2 inch) and it would be perfect. I will find something to use it for I guess but it can't be used its intended purchase / purpose or as described in the video.
I purchased the envelope clutch in early December thinking it would make a great document holder. Like everything I order from Saddleback I received it promptly. Unfortunately It did not hold standard size documents even though according to its dimensions it should have. I oiled and stretched it attempting to get the papers to fit and while the papers somewhat fit it would have been too much hassle to be of any use as a document holder. I chalked it up to my mistake for not reading the reviews on the site which a few people stated the same thing and moved on. I figured I could repurpose the clutch for something else at some point.
A few days later I received an email from customer service inquiring about my review asking me to measure the clutch, something that never dawned on me to do before. Sure enough the dimensions were off. A return authorization was sent and a replacement was sent out to me. The new one works great and papers fit in perfectly. I am thoroughly impressed by Saddleback for a couple of reasons.
First is their proactive approach to customer service. I did not contact them regarding the clutch, I was content to treat this as a learning experience and move on. I assume that a customer service rep read the review and initiated contact with me. this is nearly unheard of today in a world where humanoid robot service reps simply look to get rid of you ASAP after they blame you for whatever problem there is to void the loophole ridden worthless warranty.
Second, the item was returned to them in nowhere even close to new condition. I highly doubt it could even be put on Dave's deals. The neatsfoot oil stained the pigskin lining permanently and I stretched the leather considerably. I venture to guess Dave did not come out ahead on this transaction.
This is part of the reason I keep purchasing from them. I know I can rely on any issues to be resolved with integrity and honor. Heck, after I'm done with this review I am placing an order for a pistol wrap. While the dish rag I've been using for years works just fine this recent experience itself justifies getting it.
On an unrelated note, it is gratifying to be able to do business with a man like Dave who shares my values. On a daily basis I feel forced to do business with soulless corporations that take my money only to give it to truly reprehensible organizations and treat me like dirt for the privilege. I feel confident this is not the case with Dave, and I respect him for the courage to openly display these values without shame throughout his company.
When I got my iPad Pro, the first thing I did was get one of SBL's iPad Pro cases for it, expecting that my keyboard would work when connected and still in the case (while also hoping I'd figure out a way to not lose the Apple Pencil). Well, that didn't work out but this case is the perfect solution to carry and protect my iPad Pro, keep the keyboard cover attached (granted, it's WAAAY tight at first), AND keep track of my Apple Pencil. Without a strap, it pairs nicely with my medium notebook holder to carry into a sales presentation. Add a shoulder strap (I use one from the travel case), and you can sling it across your body and carry a couple cups of coffee. It also fits great inside the large briefcase if you just want to use it to protect your iPad Pro while you lug the rest of your office along with you too!
I am a little disappointed in this piece. I take some responsibility for not reading the reviews prior to ordering. I was looking for a document folder that would hold standard sized papers. When I saw the dimensions I figured this would be perfect, what I did not account for though is like all leather products the interior dimensions are smaller. Unfortunately Papers do not fit very well, if it was just a few centimeters wider it would be perfect. I suppose Dave did not intend for this to be used as a document holder though. Now, for the people who have the same issue as me, try coating the inside and out liberally with neatsfoot oil. It can be purchased on Amazon or at a tractor supply store. Work the oil in with your hands firmly bending the leather as you work it in. Do one side at a time, letting it dry before turning it, as well as the interior. This will darken the pigskin just so you know. After drying stuff it with as many rags as you can possibly fit in there, and close it up. You should have a hard time closing it, that is how tightly the rags should be stuffed in there. Let it sit for a day, remove the rags and you will notice documents fit somewhat better. I am going to repeat this process until they fit to my liking.
Besides the size issue, Just like all saddleback products the quality is great. Just a few centimeters larger would be great though.
i was looking for a decent laptop case for my retina Apple MacBook 12" to be comfortably stored in. initially i was going to purchase a similar case design as the MacBook Air but found this little fortune. the dimensions are perfect to keep my new toy safe. it's wonderful to carry around and with an essentially lifetime warranty how could you go wrong?
I got this in black as a lower profile option to switch to from my everyday purse (the leather satchel, also in black) and it works great. It fits my wallet, keys, phone etc. and is easy to hold in one hand of hang on my wrist with the strap.
Saddleback quality, no question. Could be larger (for documents) but it will be useful either way. I use the strap to attach it to the back of my briefcase - fit's nicely. Will end up using it for organizing expense receipts or something smaller than 8 1/2 X 11 papers...
I just got my envelope clutch today and I was SUPER excited! the only issue I have with it is that this clutch does NOT fix a notepad that hold 8 by 11 inch piece of paper. It WILL hold a 8 by 11 sheet of paper inside perfectly find and I guess that's what it meant to be used for, transporting documents, but if only it was just half an inch wider.
Overall, super impressed by its quality. I can literally smell the leather when you take it out of the bag. It just smell like high quality and that's what I am looking for
Got my early birthday present today this beautiful envelope clutch from my sister. I love it .....just enough room for what i need when i dont want to carry my tote purse or my cross body hobo. Saddleback is a great company love all my leather goods and the smell is wonderful ive been wanting this bag so i know i will be getting a lot of use from my envelope clutch.... got it in the new black love it!
I have been looking for a simple, elegant leather "envelope" for carrying documents to and from offices. I stumbled upon this item in the Saddleback website, and took a flier. What a mistake...it is so restrictive, so stiff, that is forces one to crumple and fold ordinary 8 1/2 x 11" papers in order to squeeze them in. I realize that most Saddleback stuff requires some breaking-in, but there's no way this thing is going to be broken in; it's too stiff and unyielding to be useful for actually carrying papers. In my opinion, it should be at least 1/2 inch wider so that documents, even with a file folder, can be more easily accommodated.
The look and feel of the thing are superb, as is true of the many, many other Saddleback items that I have: travel case, waterbags, duffel, backpack, messenger bag, etc.
I had been searching high and low for the perfect envelope clutch. I work in the fashion industry and couldn't afford the high end bags of the quality expected at my work, so I bought this envelope clutch in carbon, after hearing amazing things about saddleback construction.
Boy did you deliver!!!! It's just enough for keys, lipsticks, phone, checkbook, and the pocket in the back is perfect for tucking paperwork, and the quality is instantly apparent. My first day at a fashion show I had THREE designers come ask me about my bag, and they inspected it and practically petted it. It's that beautiful!
I couldn't be happier! This bag transitions from day to night so easily, it makes everything smell AMAZING like leather, the texture and feel of it is buttery and expensive, and it's hardy and can take a beating! I use it every day, its totally converted me to a saddleback lover! Can't wait to buy more bags, and definitely going to get more clutches for my mom and sisters- amazing bag!!!
I just have to try these new items out since I am a leatherhead! This one will have many uses. Makes a great ipad case as well as other uses. Just keeps getting better and better. Gun pouch is next. SBL = the bomb!
