This is a great wallet for carrying just what you need, it will actually carry more than what you need. The quality is second to none! Its a little tight at first, will take some break in time (about a week) I purchased the tobaco color and it already has started to get a great patina on it. If you just need to carry a couple of credit cards and an ID or 2 this is perfect, can't carry a wad of cash in it, but I usually carry my huge wad of cash in my front pocket. What I carry: 2 credit cards in one front sleeve- 2 rewards cards in other front sleeve- Insurance card and gas card in pocket sleeve- a couple of tight folded bills in cash sleeve and DL and CCW in ID window. Oh one more thing, it has a very addicting SMELL! Often ask why Im walking around smelling my wallet but thats for another story. Will be buying some more stuff!!
When you first start using this wallet, you'll be tempted to jump to the conclusion that it's too small and doesn't hold more than an ID and a couple of cards. This is true. Because this is some stout, sturdy leather. It needs to break in.
The product description mentions the number of cards it will hold after breaking in a couple of times, and for good reason. I've had mine for several weeks now. When I first used it, I struggled to get more than my DL, work security card and a couple of debit/credit cards. But after some use, I've found that I have been able to add a card here & there as the leather softens a bit. I now have 7 credit/debit cards, my DL, work security card, and medical insurance cards. I'm using an extra credit card and insurance cards to help break in the money slot so I can carry a few bills. But I rarely carry cash, so I'm in no big rush.
My only complaint, and it's a minor one, is that with several items in this wallet, my DL in the ID window bends quite a bit. Like I said, this is a minor complaint - it's a DL, and I haven't been 16 for longer than I care to remember, so the appearance of my DL is about as low on my list of things to be concerned about as possible.
I'm looking forward to getting old with this wallet.
The idea behind this wallet is great but it's just too tight to be usable for anything beyond a handful of cards. The cash slot is basically useless because the money isn't stiff enough to push all the way into the pocket. You have to fold the bills into 4ths in order to fit all the way and to provide enough rigidity. But then anything over 2 bills gets too bulky anyway. If you just fold in half the bills stick up out of the top.
I realize this is a minimalist wallet which is what I like but there needs to be a little expansion in the pocket design.
This is my second SBL purchase. Last year, I bought three gorgeous luggage tags. Truth is, I want very much to buy a medium water bag, preferably in tobacco. I'm in the military and travel a lot, and try to get away with my family whenever I can beyond that. The water bag would do wonders replacing my crap multi-hundred dollar, wheeled luggage bags from London Fog that are rapidly disintegrating under normal wear and tear, let alone baggage handler abuse. But, sadly, $720 is a steep hurdle on a government salary, so I'll have to keep saving for the water bag. In the meantime, gotta do my best to "leatherize" the London Fogs by adding some SBL luggage tags to replace the ugly-branded frequent flyer tags, or the paper stick-ons from the airport. The SBLs sure looked awesome and are incredibly durable, so I thought I'd take the next step and replace my black Fossil ID wallet with a SBL ID wallet. I bought the SBL Front Pocket ID Wallet in Dark Coffee Brown, and let me tell you, it rocks. It is true, unadulterated awesomeness.
I bought the ID wallet intending to replace that three or four year old Fossil ID wallet that was losing its stitches and whose ID window had fallen completely out. Little did I realize, in buying the SBL, I probably just bought the last ID wallet I will EVER need to buy. Yes, the quality is that good. And yes, it is that noticeable as soon as you open it. And yes, it is even more noticeable with age and use. I've been using that wallet every single day since March 2015 when I bought it. It looks better with age, it feels better with age, it's functionality improves with age, and I can't imagine I'll need another one any time soon.
The ID window easily holds 2-3 cards; I hold 3 in there without unreasonable stretching. There are two credit card slots on the exterior. I only store one card in each slot -- a charge card I pay off every month, and an ATM card. That's it. I suppose you could fit more than one into each of those slots, but I haven't tried it and don't plan to. I prefer ultra-slim wallets and the carrying of as little plastic and excessive paraphernalia as possible. I did find these slots were probably the most stiff when I bought it, and it was difficult to get cards in and out of. A week or so of use changed that and it's never been a problem again. Then there's an interior pocket which holds a little more.
The ID wallet isn't perfect, as no things in this humanly world are. Except, of course, for dogs. My gripes, though that sounds stronger than I really feel about it, are two-fold:
1. The leather area that covers your IDs is thick, measuring from the border edge of the wallet to where you can see the visible part of the ID. It makes much of the ID itself not visible without pulling it out. You can see this in SBL's photo above where it chops off half the face, and much of the information on the sides of the driver's license they show. Is this a problem? Not necessarily. I'd much prefer most of the ID be visible--I always carry my military ID outermost, my driver's license under that, and a permit or other ID card behind that. It'd be ideal to be able to show the whole wallet with the military ID showing without taking it out, but really, it's not a biggie. And with just a little tiny bit of aging -- 4-6 weeks of daily use -- the leather had softened enough and shaped the ID window enough around the thickness of my standard three cards to make it easy to slip the IDs in and out easily.
BTW -- I don't understand how some other reviewers found ID cards slipped too easily...? If you've overstuffed it for a long period of time and then reduced the number of ID cards in that slot, perhaps I can see it happening. Or maybe their product was defective. Mine does not allow the cards to fall out even by shaking. They are easy to put your thumb on, however, and slide out the end whenever needed.
2. The interior compartment holds very little cash. Anything more than five or six bills will really stretch its usefulness for cash carry. I rarely carry a single dollar anymore (bad habits in the age of charge cards and finally being able to "thumb a hundred bucks" with a phone...props to anyone who knows what movie that's from). When I need to carry more, I'll use a full size wallet or a separate money clip, but in general, I'm fine with a few to several bills in the center compartment or, more commonly, just storing a couple extra cards instead. Cash, btw, sticks out just a couple centimeters from the edge of the wallet's interior pocket. I presume this is for ease of pulling it out. I wish it was just a tad shorter, but again, not a deal killer at all.
Final verdict: 4.5 stars. it doesn't allow halves, so I round up for great products and down for bad ones :)
I bought a Front Pocket Classic ID Wallet and received it almost immediately.
It is very well built but it is just way too small.
I could not fit a Texas drivers license in the front compartment. It was too small.
I could only fit a single credit card in the credit card slots. They are not as big as shown on the website.
You cannot fit money into the money slot unless you fold it more than once. That makes no sense to me.
This product is just too small.
They are perfectly nice about returning their merchandise. One phone call and an email (I have not received it yet.)
It is a shame that the dimensions are off because it is a beautiful piece of leather. It's just too small.
This front pocket ID wallet was my first minimalist pocket wallet AND my first SBL purchase! I can not describe the level of satisfaction that I have with this wallet so far. I've been carrying it for about a week now, and I absolutely love it. It's exactly everything I hoped it would be. Thank you SBL!
I love SBL and have had this wallet for two years+. The wallet still looks great. The two negatives are 1.) You can't carry much cash with this wallet and 2.) The wallet is constantly destroying the magnetic strips of my credit card. I have to keep several cards in each slot in order to keep it tight so they don't all fall out, but then when I pull out my primary card (my debit card), it quickly wears the magnetic strip down from the friction with the card below. I just purchased the medium bifold in hopes that the problem will be solved. I've literally been through 3 debit cards this year because of this problem.
I just received this as a gift from a friend here in the UK. I intended to buy one when I come over to the states in September, to add to my Saddleback collection, but now I don't need to, Happy days!!!!! It also means I've had another Saddleback fix earlier than expected. Why is this stuff so addictive?
Here in the UK we have Dr Who. I'm sure this wallet is made from Tardis leather. The amount of stuff you can get in this is unbelievable & I can still find the one thing I need to put my hand on easily.
UK £20 notes are much larger than US bills. I fold my notes in 3 & I can fit in 10 notes, my bank cards, ID, membership cards & a spare pair of contact lenses easily.
It looks stunning in my favourite Tobacco colour & has the usual Saddleback quality.
The first time I took it out of my pocket in a store, the assistant admired the wallet & asked where I got it.
First day, first compliment.
I love this thing already & am looking forward to living with it for many years to come.
I wrote a previous review about the outstanding quality of the wallet. I have had the wallet for about a year and a half and I still face a problem inserting cash all the way in the wallet. I have tried a number of things, but I finally found a solution that will stand even if your wallet is filled to the brim. I cut a dowel rod that was no more than 1/8" in diameter. I stuffed it down into the bottom of the cash slot to provide a little give in the pig skin slot. Now I have no problem stuffing as much cash as I need into the slot with ease, and it goes down all the way every time.
I purchased this wallet to replace a wallet that I bought about a year ago. When I bought the other one I had looked at Saddleback but the color I wanted was out of stock so I went with choice 2. The Saddleback is much higher quality and about the same price. I had a little trouble getting everything into it but it has already begun to break in. The workmanship on this is excellent and I think it is going to last for a very long time. I am very happy with this purchase and only wish that I had waited instead of buying the other wallet that I have thrown out already!
I have had this wallet for over 5 years now and it gets used every day. I have the center stuffed with medical and insurance cards along with a couple of outdoor shop.s rewards cards. DL is in the obvious location and then 3 credit cards between front and rear pockets. I have no complaints and expect it to last another 5 years or longer. Just ordered a cc wallet for my wife to carry in her purse. She'll never need another one....saving my pennies for the camera bag for retirement traveling and field use. Thanks for the great products Dave!
I have 2 of these wallets. I have a black and a tobacco set. The quality between the two seems to vary. The black one is very stiff and the leather edges are solid which is very nice. The tobacco color one seems to be different in that the edges of the center slot bent and tuck under very easily. I guess this is just due to the leather being a natural thing and inconsistent? For what its work, i purchased both of these from Dave's deals. I like the tobacco color but always find myself going back to my black one as the quality of the leather is better. Craftsmanship always remains the best.
I love SBL gear. I have these wallets, a medium notepad holder, 2 credit card cases, a medium wallet, a box of scraps for small projects, and will be buying 4 passport holders for the family.
I wanted a small wallet to hold my ID, student ID, credit cards and cash. This wallet is perfect. Sometimes I prefer not to carry a purse and this is exactly what I was looking for. I can put this in my pocket and it is not noticeable, which is just what I wanted. I highly recommend this wallet!!
This wallet has survived three stints through the washing machine and it still looks and feels incredible. I just threw it in a ziplock bag of rice for a day or two and BOOM back to normal. The is the best ID wallet you can buy. It breaks in so well. I am ordering three more for my groomsman gifts. Thanks for such a great product!
This wallet is the perfect size for me. I used to walk around with a very bulky bi-fold wallet that was always painful to sit on. Putting my old wallet in my front pocket just created an awkward, annoying bulge. This wallet is extremely thin, yet has plenty of space to hold what you need. I'm not going to go into great detail, since there are plenty of other extremely detailed reviews. I'll just say, they were right, and I love this wallet.
I've been a Saddleback Leather customer for a few years. I think my first experiences with their products turned me into an leather enthusiast. I bought the first version of this wallet two years ago and fell head over heals in love with it. I had thought to myself, "this will be the last wallet I ever buy and if for some reason it disappears I know where I'll go to get it replaced."
Fast forward to the last few months. I was engaged to be married and knew right away what the gift was going to be to my groomsman, this wallet. I was in no hurry to buy the gifts because I knew exactly what I wanted and where to get it. Finally a couple of weeks ago I placed the order. I debated getting different colors but in the end decided on the same color I have the DCB. I ordered four.
The wallets arrived a short while later and I quickly opened the box. I was instantly disappointed. This isn't the same wallet I have. First the color was different. This one is lined with the lighter pigskin. I was frustrated because this wasn't featured in the pictures. When I went back to the website, I saw it listed as "with lighter pigskin." OK you got me on that one. Should have read it, but still feel a bit ripped off since the pictures do not represent this (this also kind off reminded me of McDonalds and other fast food where the picture doesn't represent the product, not a good thing to for a high quality leather merchant to model). Next I noticed that the leather is not dyed as well as mine. I think this explains the lighter pigskin. My wallet is dark leather, dyed all the way through with a dark pigskin. These aren't dyed all the way through with a light pigskin. The leather in general seems different. Not as nice to the touch and doesn't appear to be the same quality (I don't know how to explain this any differently).
When Saddleback went through their change a year or so ago I knew it was an expansion of the business and a new model to make more money. The company went from discounting product with scars to calling it "artistic" and appreciating the experience of the animal. I understand business and read the writing on the wall (less waste, more money which often translated to cutting corners), but I had secretly hoped the products wouldn't change. Unfortunately it appears the Saddleback of yesteryear is just that.
Not sure if I'll buy another product of Saddleback or not. I think I'll shop around more now for my leather needs.
I'm still considering returning the wallets, although now I'm in a pinch because I waited to buy them. Given the price of the wallets, you probably get what you deserve. This is a great design, but an average product. You will probably like it, but won't LOVE IT. I'm really hoping my original purchase lives up to their guarantee, because I wouldn't want one of their replacements. If you have been a Saddleback customer for two years or more, you will likely receive a product different than what you expect.
I ordered this after seeing many great reviews online and recently reading a blog on a EDC knife site, where someone asked for suggestions for a minimalist wallet. Although some folks suggested other wallets, the majority recommended the Saddleback and the discussion kept coming back to this wallet. I previously had Smallets from a competitor and was satisfied with those overall. My regret is that I didn't discover Saddleback earlier because this wallet tops my others by far. It is very well made and sturdy without being too stiff and bulky. I really like that the ID window is not covered because those tend to distort the view. I also like the extra pocket behind the ID for a secondary ID or whatever.
Carbon wasn't my first choice in color but DCB and Tobacco weren't available at the time. Carbon is actually nicer in person than in the pics where it tends to look more smokey and washed out. In person it looks like a slightly worn black and has a nice texture. The Small Bifold is my choice for now (front pocket) but I like to switch once in while and will go to this wallet at some point in the future when I'm feeling extremely efficient. Thanks again!
Just opened my mail today to see the wallet I ordered. Very excited after gorging myself on the myriad videos Dave has produced. Hilarious knock-off video by the way! When I got the leather, I couldn’t help but give a big whiff to the side and the pocket inside. Nothing really beats the smell of full-grain leather that has been treated so well.
Downside: If it is one, it’s that the slots are darn hard to get cards in and out of. This is probably something that will get better with age, but the difficulty surprised me. Not enough of a downside to regret the purchase, but figured it was worth mentioning to other prospective buyers.
Gorgeous leather, very sturdy construction, and the way Dave handles and talks about his own gear makes me feel comfortable with not treating it like fine china.
I bought this wallet several years ago and have used it every day since. It has broken in very nicely and has stretched to accommodate my cards perfectly. Based on how it's held up so far, I expect it really will hold up for 100 years, though there probably won't be credit cards by then....
I would love to have one design with the magnetic clip.
I am based in the UK:
Shipping time was good and the item was well packaged. This item was eligible for a single item discount because it is small and light. $15 instead of $25 for shipping.
UK Customs did not charge me to have this imported, they did charge (a lot) when I bought a small notepad holder - presumable because it was bigger, heavier and more expensive.
The wallet itself is fantastic quality. I have the tobacco colour and it looks and feels great. All the slots are TIGHT to begin with... having 2 in each slot I was really tricky to slide my drivers licence in and out of the front slot with the window. VERY TIGHT. I presume this will loosen up over time.
I actually decided to move cards out of the slot with the window - made accessing the other cards much easier plus I think it looks better! you get to see and feel more of the leather.
Having used this for a good number of weeks now, this is defo not a wallet for notes in my opinion. I use the central compartment but have to fold and fold notes to get them in there, then have to take them all out again to get one... I dont carry that many notes anyway and you would be buying a bill fold if that were the case.
I actually saw someone on youtube who had the ID Wallet tucked into the inside of the passport wallet, which looked like a brilliant idea - giving the flexibility of using either/both depending on the situation.
curses, that means you start thinking about buying a passport wallet too... where's my credit card?
I received this wallet for Christmas from my wife. This review is based on my initial impression of the quality and functionality. I switched to a front pocket wallet that cost about 50% as much as the saddleback 2 years ago, now it is in the trash completely destroyed. So the way I see it, if this wallet makes it 4+ years it is a good investment. Based on the quality of the leather and the craftsmanship I expect I will lose it well before it wears out. Out of the box I was able to add 3 credit cards, a license, and my insurance cards without too much of an issue. Cash was a little harder, I left a few cards jammed into the cash slot to stretch it out overnight and now I can fit all the cash I need to carry, haven't tried more than 5+ bills at once. Some people in their reviews complain about the stiffness, I believe these people may not have experience with leather goods like this that stretch and form to their users needs. I highly recommend this wallet and will probably purchase a few more to give as gifts.
Item arrived super fast, shipping is excelent,
same as the price of shipping.
When I open the package my first expression was "Woowww".
Wallet is excellent built, stitching is perfect and the smell of real leather is amazing.
The size is perfect, so simple and yet so much to offer. Im from Croatia and our currency is Kuna, the bills fits perfectly.
Our disadvantage is that 1, 2 and 5 are only in coins (5 bills discontinued), but i managed to fit them in the note section behind id compartment.
The leather tension keeps them in the place, and i dont use much coins only 2-3 pieces when the change is returned.
Oh and it fits perfectly with 5, 10, 20 € bills.
100% statisfied and happy!!!
Because I was so happy with id wallet I ordered small billfold and can't wait until he arrive.
And one more thing, at Europe it is almost impossible to buy things that quality for that price, 99% products are overpriced and saddly from China :(.
I just got this (dk coffee brown) and I must say I do like it, I am not sure I got the old school thick leather that saddleback is famous for or if I got the new thinner leather product that a few folks have complained about. I may put it in my pocket to run into a store or something but it will not be there regularly.... it will be in my bag.... One thing I will say I was not able to put my license in the front id window right out of the box...I did call saddleback and they suggested I pack it with a few cards and let it sit a few days to stretch. I will be using this and if it turns out it does not hold its shape or becomes warped or weird I am sure saddleback will replace it. If in a day or 2 the window is still too tight it will probably get returned.
I received my wallet today, over here in the UK.
This is obviously a high quality piece, which has been well crafted, and will indeed last many years.
That "new leather smell" alone is enough to tell anyone that the leather used is very high quality, and reminds me of a bygone era, when the word "Leather" itself was an indication that you were purchasing a high quality item that would last for many years, unlike today, when most "leather items" do not really deserve the name, being imported from some far off country , with the "leather" itself being very thin and low quality.
Saddleback items are obviously very well made , the only problem being that I can see myself quickly becoming a "saddleback junkie", with my eye already on a passport wallet.
If anyone is simply just thinking about buying a Saddleback piece, just do it, you wont regret it all. This is stuff that will last an age, and which, most likely, can be passed down through generations.
