Will be saving up for this one. Wanted the front pocket briefcase. But price increase made that not an option. This bag is more suited to my needs for a home for my iPad pro.

Great Messenger bag

by

Just received the Front Pocket Messenger bag in dark brown color.

It's a great bag and it looks like it's built to last 100+ years. I also find it to be very functional and I like to front pockets a lot. I put my 14" laptop, magazines, work files, my headphone and other cable / accessories, with still room to spare.

I highly recommend it. This is my first Saddleback bag, and I think there will be many more purchases!

Thank you Dave for a great product.

My new companion

by

I was looking to upgrade to a bag that would accommodate my 15" laptop, notepad, and basic EDC's like multi-tool, lighter, flashlight, phone, cash, and emergency charger. I also wanted to be able to convert to a backpack when I ditched the laptop for a sweatshirt and water bottle for a day out. I was torn between the standard messenger bag, a satchel, and the squared backpack. The messenger bag wouldn't fit my laptop. The squared backpack was too big for what I was carrying. The standard messenger bag was cool but I wanted more pockets. Voila: the Front Pocket Messenger was introduced. It fits my gear perfectly. It wears comfortably as a backpack or an over-the-shoulder. Of course there's the cool factor. Carrying a vertically oriented bag as opposed to a standard briefcase shape is somehow satisfying. And of course, it's built like every other SBL product. It's heavy but in a "I don't have to baby it: way. Buy one!

Tobacco Brown?

by

SBL products here, are used extensively for work and travel. The wow factor and compliments are always incoming. The tobacco front pocket messenger bag arrived today. What a beautiful design. Here comes the however. However, this is not the same tobacco brown of last year. I have not sent it back, but called SBL and inquired to the leather finish. She stated, Dave had the finish of the tobacco brown color, changed a couple of months ago. This is were I am absolutely on the fence at the moment. I have never felt this way about SBL before. Half of me wants to keep the bag, the other does not like this "new" color/ finish. It is as though it has been "cheapened". Even the SS D rings are smaller in diameter and not as beefy as before. So I will hang it up for a couple of nights and decide what to do with this beautifully made bag. Damnit! The bag is more expensive and just seems not saddle back leather like. It feels right but looks, in so many ways, not right.

Great EDC bag ... strong construction

by

I've been using the Front Pocket Messenger for about a month now. This thing is absolutely gorgeous. It sits well for my height (5'10) and a medium frame. I was concerned about how it would look given it's long and not wide like the briefcases. So far, I've been using it for my 15" macbook pro, a couple of books, a notepad, a water bottle. It's my EDC. The leather will stretch and can hold files, also the back pocket is good for files and such. The front pockets are the absolute best. I store chargers and all sorts of cables and accessories in there. It's great if you want to go light to medium carry. For anything more ... a weekend trip, lots of files / binders, etc I use the briefcase.

My only feedback is if they can make the side pockets a bit wider to hold a good size water bottle and a bit longer .. even half an inch. I am always concerned my longish water bottle may slide out.

Times have changed

by

Disappointing. No internal divider that used to come with the messenger bag. The leather and D-rings are much more flimsy than the older SB bags I have. I can foresee how regularly carrying a water bottle or anything with weight to it may well wear a hole in the thin bottom of this bag. Prices are up, quality is down. SB is now for people with more money than sense. Good bye SB.

First bag, new first love

by

What can I say that has not been said about saddleback quality and styling? Nothing, it lives up to its reputation. I love this bag but the only thing I would change are the side pockets... just a tiny bit larger, I could fit my water bottle on one side and my coffee thermos on the other, then this bag would be perfect. As it is, I must carry them inside the main compartment, which takes up a lot of usable space when it should be unnecessary. Still keeping it, still love it.

Man club requirement.

by

This bag is so well built and amazing that my man card has been permanently notched because of it. My one area of concern is something that I've seen others talk about. The tobacco color. I have many other Saddleback items. All in tobacco. The old tobacco was kind of raw. It felt somewhat like suede and turned shiny and imbued it's color based upon the handling of it. This bag seems to have a shiny sheen already. It's darker and more refined.

My initial impression is that I don't like it as much as the other tobacco. My thought though is that this new leather might already be more waterproof and more durable than its predecessor.

Last thing I would suggest to Saddleback; put rivets on the attachment point on the straps for the two front pockets. You have rivets everywhere else on this tank of a bag. Not having them there seems like something is missing.

Thank you for an amazing bag. I will proudly use it until the end of time, or 100 years, whichever comes first.

Great Bag For EDC or Day Trips, Awesome Backpack

by

I have the Front Pocket Messenger Bag in the limited Walnut color. The bag itself is built like any other Saddleback item - amazingly well.

The pockets are deep, which means a lot of storage space. I would suggest keeping your smaller items (headphones, pocket knife, etc.) in a smaller pouch within the pocket to prevent having to dig around in the deep pocket. They really do hold a ton. Mine has my MacBook air charger, a small flashlight, a multi-tool, and earbuds in a SBL square cord wrap. All that in one pocket.

The bag functions well as a cross-body messenger. I prefer carrying this way, rather than on one shoulder. It really shines, however, in backpack mode.

Great job Saddleback.

Not like the old SBL....

by

Not sure I will keep this bag - leather is same quality but all the hardware is much flimsier than prior bags - you probably wouldn't notice if this is your first SBL bag but this is my fifth (and unfortunately first after the price increase). Front pockets are also quite long which may be an issue if you have large hands. I'm on the fence ...

Walnut the new Tobacco

by

As an owner of several pieces of SBL product don't be concerned with the updates to the design / hardware. I suspect the changes were a result of wanting to decrease the overall weight. You won't wear out this bag and the hardware won't fail. My biggest words of wisdom is surrounding the color. I was lucky enough to get my hands on the Walnut. The Walnut seems to be closer to the old tobacco as the new tobacco seems to have changed. If you are interested in the tobacco look opt for the Walnut. As its a limited color get it while you can.

Jesus Would Have Carried this Bag

by

I have a number of Saddleback Leather bags, but needed a small bag suited for daily use as a minister who is confined to a wheelchair for use when I do hospital visits, prison visits, and visiting the infirm, shut-ins, and the elderly.

With this bag I can carry a large bible, several hymn books, some smaller bibles to give away, a full kit to provide communion, a small laptop, a iPad to play music, two high-quality speakers, an iPad, and various chargers.

I also carry various items that I can give away, and other items in support of my ministry. The bag is small enough that I can clip it to the armrests on either side, or I can clip it to the lap belt of the wheelchair.

This is an ideal ministers bag, and I no doubt that the Disciples of Christ or even Jesus himself would have carried this bag from place to place.

Great bag

by

I purchased this bag about a month ago. It is very well made and just yesterday two people complimented me on it. I really like the front pockets for cords, etc. Leather is good. I have it in the tobacco color, which is very nice. I was hesitant because of a couple unfavorable reviews on tobacco, but I think it looks GREAT. It is not quite as heavy duty as my other Saddleback bags, but it looks tough enough to meet the 100 year warranty. Thank you.

Great bag, questionable experience with company

by

Definitely a 5 star bag. Leather is excellent quality, design is great. I am an avid destroyer of bags, and even though I'll be the guy to put the warranty to the test- it'll be decades before I can do that. Some have complained the hardware is flimsier than it used to be, but I imagine the strength of the smallest d rings to hold at least several hundred pounds, and if you can put enough weight in the bag for that to happen...you deal in lead bricks or something?

Now the couple things that bugged me:

1. I'm in California, the checkout on the website says 0.00 tax. They ship from Cali, So I found out I was charged tax later in an e-mail. Update your website.

2. I ordered during the Father's Day promotion, which clearly said "ALL orders over $400 will receive a small bifold wallet free". This was dishonest because they had a promo code buried at the bottom of some sales pitch. That's a big difference from ALL ORDERS. left a bad taste in my mouth.

Story

The original Messenger Bag was inspired by a wild New Year’s Eve experience I had packed into the main square of Mexico City with about 5 million other people. That original bag came out so well that I woke up one morning about 15 years later and thought, “What if I put two pockets on the front of this thing?” I guess you could say I’m lucky, some people go a whole lifetime without ever putting pockets on their messenger bag.
