It's been a couple of years now and the jury is in. This bag is gorgeous as all saddleback products are, and I wanted to love it forever. I had hoped it would be my everyday bag, every day, for the rest of my days. I already wrote a review but my opinion has changed as I have lived with the bag. First of all, I finally had to take the bag in to a leather worker to cut the strap down. This was for two reasons: 1) Strap was ridiculously long. Even at 5'9" I couldn't get it short enough to be comfortable. 2) The buckle is placed too close to what should be the middle of the strap, so even when you adjust the strap, the buckle sits directly on the shoulder. It was very uncomfortable. My leather guy just cut the stationary piece (quite a bit of length!) so that it was shorter and the buckle rests on my chest instead of my shoulder. It's frustrating to have to do that to a bag I already paid so much for.
The next issue is that it is collapsing forward. Because there is no handle on the top of the bag and the strap is long, I often grab it by the top of the bag and unfortunately, it's kind of looking pinched at the top and leaning forward.
It's such a pretty bag, and now that I've fixed the strap I do use it a lot more, but beware! Strap needs major redesign, and it really should have a little handle on the back/top. It's working for me now, but if I had it to do over, I would pick a different bag.
OVERALL: I've owned this bag for four years now and it just keeps getting better. It's well-made and stylish enough to carry it out to nicer outings, but rugged enough to take it to a music festival. Every now and then, I'll put this bag away and start using something else, but I ALWAYS come back to it. It will forever be me go-to day bag.
AGE: This bag has worn in beautifully over the years and has such character. The leather is buttery and, with an annual cleaning and coat of leather protectant looks like brand new (but I almost prefer when it's all scratched and dirty). It's one of those bags that just gets better and better with more years and miles behind it. (And not a single stitch has come undone, by the way.)
I consider this a great Saddleback starter bag. (It was my first Saddleback piece and, needless to say, I've been addicted to Dave's products ever since). It's one that you'll instantly fall in love with and keep forever. It's simple but versatile, can hold pretty much your entire life and, with time, becomes like a safety blanket--you'll never want to leave home without it.
If of thy mortal goods thou art bereft
And from thy slender store
Two loaves alone to thee are left,
Sell one, and with the dole,
Buy hyacinths to feed thy soul.
~ Saadi (1184-?1283), Persian poet
This is my hyacinth!
Love the color, texture, smell, style, size. No complaints. Easily got the latch. Loving the scuffs and patina that is already forming. Love it's weight. Makes me smile every time I use it. Got the tobacco and already getting character! Gorgeous - more so with every use.
There's something truly comforting about it to me. I even like the heft of it. No problems with the strap digging in for me yet. I have my Lana wallet in it. phone, keys, small bag with morning medicine and lip balm and powder. A calendar, pen and small notebook. And there's room for more! The pigskin lining is nice. Soft, suede-y. Reminds me of the pigskin suede Members Only jacket from back in the day! LOL
Really good quality craftsmanship. My current go to for sure!
My first piece of Saddleback Leather was a checkbook cover many years ago. It did not take long for me to decide I wanted to upgrade my purse to a Saddleback bag. At that time, Saddleback did not make women's bags, so I improvised and purchased a Small Satchel in Chestnut. I carried that Satchel as my purse for six or seven years. Occasionally, I would check back with the website to see new products - and low and behold, one day there were women's bags!! Although I loved my Satchel, and there was absolutely nothing wrong with it, I wanted this purse. After many months of procrastination (and drooling over the website), I bit the bullet and purchased the Hobo Crossbody in Dark Coffee Brown.
I CAN'T SAY LOUDLY ENOUGH HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS BAG!!! It holds everything I need without being overly large or bulky. I love the sleek, simple design and the Dark Coffee Brown color is gorgeous.
While others have expressed an issue with the closure, the closure has not been a problem for me. However, I must confess, I had three immediate issues with the bag. GOOD NEWS - they were all EXTREMELY EASY FIXES.
First, I REALLY did not like the narrow strap that came with the bag. So, I purchased a Satchel strap in Dark Coffee Brown to replace it. Easy enough.
Second, I did not like the pocket inside the bag. I felt the pocket took up too much of the interior space of the bag, and I carry my phone in the outside pocket anyway, so I cut the threads and removed the interior pocket. Much better for me.
Third, while I waited for my Satchel strap to arrive to replace the original strap, I had to carry the bag with the original strap - and yes - the buckle on the original strap does dig into your shoulder blade. This was the easiest fix of all. The strap is detachable. Remove the strap and reattach it so that the buckle runs across your chest. DUH! Oh, and when you reattach the strap, if you swivel the hooks and reattach them with the springs facing outward, this eliminates the problem of the springs pushing against the top of the bag and causing the strap to detach.
I own several pieces of Saddleback and Love 41 leather products; multiple bags, multiple wallets, my checkbook cover and a belt. Without a doubt, this is my FAVORITE piece so far. If you are sitting on the fence, debating on whether or not to purchase this bag, I say DO IT!! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.
Let me preface by saying, I'm a Saddleback addict. My husband purchased the Classic Briefcase for me as a Christmas gift and I've been hooked on their products ever since. I'm 5'2" and the bag was too large for me but I just couldn't part with the bag. A cable bag, a men's wallet and a dog collar later, I finally bought myself another Saddleback present.
I received the Hobo purse today in dark coffee brown and I love absolutely love it! Ahh, the smell of new quality leather. I have to say I was a bit worried about the clasp since some of the previous reviews mentioned it was difficult to operate but mine opens and closes easily. I also love the size of the bag. I'll be able to fit all of my necessities with quite a bit of room to spare. The interior pocket is the perfect size for my iPhone and the exterior pocket will come in handy too. Thank you Saddleback for yet another piece of quality craftsmanship I get to add to my Saddleback collection!
This is a very well made bag and I chose the Hobo in black because of its classy look, but mostly because I know Saddleback Leather makes very sturdy bags! The Hobo weighs approximately 2 lbs empty and it doesn't take me long to have it full of stuff and weighing 4 lbs on my shoulder! Since the Hobo is one of Saddleback's lighter bigger crossbody bags, I will likely end up getting another Hobo in a different color one day because my shoulders cannot comfortably carry anything heavier than a loaded up Hobo!
The leather on this bag is beautiful and strong. A suggestion I would make is to change the current 3/4 inch shoulder strap to a minimum 1" thick shoulder strap to balance the heftiness of this lovely bag and also change the hardware to make the current removable shoulder strap a permanent shoulder strap instead. The hinge spring on the hardware is too easy to open and I would hate to lose this beauty to a subway thief! Thanks to the other reviewers who offer a solution (the $7.00 shoulder pad) to offset the painful buckle hurt when the Hobo is loaded up! I'd love to know if Saddleback leather offers an optional shoulder strap for those who need/want it - such as a 1" thick shoulder strap with a ring to attach to the bag itself and that would not be easily removable like the current spring clip. This bag is a beauty and I will keep checking back to see if Saddleback offers a solution to the shoulder strap issue. I am definitely coming back to Saddleback Leather for more cool bags!
Oh yes and Suzanne I see a market for a medium sized Hobo bag as I am sure you do too!! Thanks you guys!
My husband and I are celebrating 30 years of marriage together next month. We decided to treat ourselves to several pieces of Saddleback leather products in honor of our big day. I have recieved so far the wrap wallet, and the mens slim wallet and tablet bag are on their way. This beautifal bag in the coffee brown color arrived today, and oh my goodness!! All I can say is, Wow!!! The bag is an absolute beauty to behold! I think my husband is in big trouble because I am now going to want to celebrate like this for every anniversary! Dave, please don't read this.......but this bag feels waaaaaaaay more expensive than what I paid for it!! I'm off to see what else I can purchase for my celebration......30 years is a real accomplishment in today's world. :D
I am a BIG review kind of gal.... so the few drawl backs on this bag did worry me a bit, but I went with my gut and got the Hobo in Tobacco. I am so happy I did!
The latch was a concern at first, but I can (as a left handed person, by the way) tell you, yes... it did take me a minute to figure out how to do it so effortlessly as in the video. But once I had it, it was smooth sailing with opening and closing the bag. It really does just takes practice.
Here is the main reason for my review... not only just to brag about the high quality of the bag and how beautiful the leather is.... that goes without saying, but a tip for other woman out there who love a handle on their Hobo.
I have the Love 41 Leather Cosmetic bag and it comes with a long strap and a shorter, wrist strap. The wrist strap makes THE PERFECT handle for the Hobo bag! It's so incredibly perfect that I got pretty dang giddy when my husband suggested the use for the small strap. That's just a tip, for all of you ladies out there that love choices just as much as I do.
Thank you Saddleback... this will now be my perfect travel bag and I can't wait to break it in while making memories at the same time.
I have this bag in Chestnut and I couldn't be happier with it. When I first got it I wasn't sure how much stuff I would actually be able to fit inside it because it's a very structured bag, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it fits everything I need. If fits my wrap wallet, keys, phone, multi tool, sunglasses case, gum, and all the other things I carry with room to spare.
I know some people have had problems using the clasp, but I haven't had any problems with mine at all. It operates very easily and I'm glad it's there so I can secure my bag when I'm in a crowded place.
I absolutely adore this bag and it has been my go to bag since I got it. I would highly recommend it to anyone thinking of purchasing it. It's well worth the price.
I bought the Hobo Crossbody Purse in Chestnut. I love the color and smell of the leather. It has more room than I realized, love the back pocket!
I usually don't like to spend this much for a purse and wallet, but with this quality and lifetime Guarantee. It's well worth it. I also ordered the Long trifold wallet in Chestnut. Love that as well.
Like others mentioned the clasp is hard to work but its getting better the more you use it. Plus it keeps it very secure. The purse is kind of on the heavy side even with little in it, but that's expected with leather. I still love it! I would highly recommend this purse.
I love this purse. I bought it in August, and I don't know what happened, but it's like in the last two weeks, everyone suddenly noticed it. So many compliments! And it's always about the quality - "Wow, that is a nice looking bag. Bet that will actually last." "That's really good leather. I didn't think they made good purses like that anymore." "They used really good hardware on that purse!" Yup. I'm not someone who has a lot of extra spending money. It took me a while to save up and get this, but I'm glad I did.
A couple of comments have mentioned the clasp being a little trickier than they're used to. I experienced that as well at first, got used to it, and then decided that it's a feature: just means it's harder to steal from while I travel around. :)
I wrote a review previously for this bag and at that time I think I gave it four stars. After a year of use I would rate this bag with five stars. Initially I was concerned with the front clasp which, as many other reviewers have noted, is cumbersome to use, and can be challenging to open and close with one hand. Over time, however, using this front clasp has become easier and easier as I have gotten more used to it. I no longer feel like this clasp is hard to use. This bag may be improved by a strap closure as seen on other saddleback bags, but perhaps only minimally. The main advantage to the front clasp is how easy it is to pop it open with just one hand when you want quick and easy access to your bag. Most of the time I just carry the bag with the flap open and I have found this to be the most convenient way to use this bag.
Other reviewers have noted that the hardware connecting the bags strap to the body squeaks. I have also noticed this, though it seems to have gone away completely after one year of use. I consider the time in breaking this bag in as part of the investment in a quality tool designed to last a lifetime.
My bag is the tobacco color. It has changed color and gained patina, naturally, and beautifully through use. I would agree with the pitch made by the Saddleback Leather company that this bag looks its worst on the day you purchase it and that it only gets better with time. That being said, if you don't want your bag to show variations in color, and be easily stained, then I would suggest purchasing one of the other colors of leather.
The leather remains durable, and over time it has become softer and more pliable.
In daily use I have found this bag to be a perfect size for carrying with me my daily essentials. On a typical day I carry my wallet, cell phone, and work lanyard and keys with a lot of room to spare. If I want to I can fit a notebook, and 32oz water bottle, in this bag as well. I have also used it to carry small items home from the grocery store. The bag is not heavy, but it is also not very light. When this bag is fully loaded it can be very heavy and I have felt the stain in both my shoulder and in my back. I have found that it works best for me to limit the amount of items that I carry in my bag. In a way this has simplified my daily routine. I used to carry much more in my lighter nylon or cotton bags. Now I get along with less, and I have realized that most of the other items that I was used to carrying with me everyday were superfluous to my daily needs.
Overall, this bag has served me very well. I find it a pleasure to carry with me daily.
This is my fourth Saddleback purse - I own the small tote, the clutch purse, and the mini hobo as well. This is without a doubt my favorite, which says a lot because I carried my small tote every day for two years and it is beautifully broken in. I rearranged the strap a little so the buckle sits on the side instead of the top of the strap and it is more comfortable that way. I also found the clasp a little tough to use every time I wanted to get into my purse, so I just tied a very strong magnet to it and it works great, particularly since I can still use the clasp when I want the purse to be securely closed. Even without the magnet, I don't find the clasp to be as difficult to use as other reviewers seem to. It is remarkable how much stuff this purse holds. I thought that I was going to have to cut way back on what I carried when I moved from my tote to this purse, but I only had to eliminate a couple things. I can still easily carry my phone, keys, wallet, checkbook, a small zipper case of makeup and another with snacks for kiddos, plus the miscellaneous anti-bac gel, chapstick, etc. My purse is the chestnut color and it is the most beautiful, rich color I have seen in a purse. All I all, I am thrilled with this purchase even with the few very minor modifications.
I received this bag as a gift from my dad. He turned me on to Saddleback this past Christmas. Since then I’ve bought three small items, but hadn’t yet invested in a bigger bag. Hence my excitement in receiving this gift. I love this bag! It is gorgeous and so well built – nothing less than I would expect from Saddleback. I love the feel, the smell, and the weight of it. I know I will love it for a lifetime.
I have not experienced the issue of the strap buckle being uncomfortable as some other reviewers have. I wear cross-body bags over my left shoulder (with the bag resting on my right hip). I’m also pretty short (5’2”). With the strap buckled at the 6th hole from the shortest point, the buckle rests on my left upper trapezius muscle – well behind the collarbone and above the shoulder blade. I’m describing this in such detail in case it helps someone else decide whether or not this will be comfortable for them.
I do, however, have to agree with many other reviewers about the difficulty and annoyance of the clasp. Opening it requires dexterity and strength in the thumb and fingers. Practice makes it a little easier, but it remains awkward and annoying. I have done what another reviewer suggested and used another clasp (in my case a small S carabiner) to join the existing clasp with the metal loop.
I do like the aesthetics of this sturdy, secure clasp, and can understand why it was chosen for this bag, but it really hinders functionality. If I were buying this for myself and had a choice between this and another Saddleback bag with a different closure, I would hands down choose the other bag for this reason alone.
It’s because of the clasp that I’m giving this 4 stars. Otherwise, the bag is truly a cherished item.
I am really very happy with this bag! Great size when I need a larger bag. Love the adjustable long strap so I have both a shoulder bag and a true cross body bag when I want. Winter coat or sun dress I can adjust to the perfect length. The clasp is a bit of a pain, but on the flip side this also make it very secure, so I'm OK with it. Beautiful construction in and out! I would buy again.
I was very disappointed to find out I could not buy a replacement strap. I also own the mini hobo which I bought to use and leave at work. I work at a hospital and when I'm on call I have 2 phones, a pager, and extra keys and the small hobo is the perfect size, but the strap that comes with it is not right for my needs so I tried the other strap and it was perfect. But alas they do not sell a replacement strap for the Hobo Crossbody Purse.
After much researching, I purchased the SBL Hobo in black. I absolutely love the chestnut and tobacco colors, but I was wanting one bag to use as an everyday purse and/or travel bag that would go with both business and casual attire. I immediately regretted ordering it in black, but as soon as it arrived and I saw how beautifully it was made, I was happy with my color choice. It goes great with my black slacks and dress clothes, yet totally works with anything casual. It's a nice feeling to be able to use just one purse for everything! As for size and functionality, I adore it. I am only 5'1" and petite, so was a bit worried about the size, weight, and shoulder strap length. I knew that this was a fairly large bag but would rather have extra space in my purse than have it not hold any extra items while on the go. It is roomy and holds all of my essentials with some room to spare. The large exterior pocket is great for a cell phone, keys, or anything that you need to grab quickly. I have the shoulder strap on the shortest length when not carrying it cross body, and it does not rub or cut into my shoulder. The weight of the bag isn't even an issue. The latch is taking some breaking in, as I see why some people have been complaining about it, but it doesn't bother me. When my bag first arrived, the latch was very difficult to open and was slightly oily just from being new. I carefully wiped the latch with isopropyl alcohol to remove any residue and it was immediately easier to get a grip on to open. The latch gets easier over time! If you spend some time playing around with it, just opening and closing it repeatedly will stretch the spring some and make it easier. You'll also figure out how to open it with one hand. The latch is actually bridle/rein hardware that's used to attach the reins to a bridle. It's made to be opened single handedly, opened and closed regularly, stand up to repeated pulling and movement, and yet never get so loose that it won't stay closed. It definitely prevents the main pocket of your purse from being pick pocketed while traveling! I hope this review helps anyone who is looking to make a purchase! I am in love with the Hobo and highly recommend it.
Just got the Hobo bag for an anniversary present for my wife. The clasp is extremely hard to open even for me. My wife has a bit of arthritis , and even after loosening up the clasp with a bit of oil and working it numerous times, I still find it difficult even for me. My solution is to attach a small stainless chain link clip, It leaves the top a little looser but no big problem as the bag is still quite secure. Everything else is as usual from Saddleback, top shelf quality.
Really Dave, I have seen numerous comments about this clasp, you should do something about it!! I would have given the review five stars but the clasp ruins it.
I bought the lg tobacco hobo for my wife and with some exceptions, she loves it. The problems are the hardware used. The strap clips are are horrible as they are always coming open allowing the curse to dump out which brings me to the even worse problem. The clamp used to close the purse SUCKS.... My wife has grown tired of trying to close and even worse open it so she leaves it open, thus resulting in spilling the contents when a strap comes disconnected
Since she likes the purse, I may send it off to a leather shop to have these horrible clasps replaced with something that actually works. For the price, I expected more ....
I researched this bag for a while but now I regret having not bought the bucket bag. The leather is beautiful but the buckle is the biggest pain in the world to open and close. People have actually commented : 'nice bag but not functional.' Functional in size but not to get to my wallet...It also squeaks, I thought it would stop squeaking after a few months. And I need to wear it at a specific angle for the hardware not to hurt my shoulder.
Just received my bag today, am really impressed and happy with its quality, the workmanship, size etc. However, there is just one major let down..the clasp is really hard to handle and requires too much work and strength to open. The clasp rotates and can be opened using your index finger or thumb but both ways requires a lot of strength to undo as it requires a very 'deep' push. Not too sure what the original intention was but thought a magnet clasp or a one directional, less stiff, less 'tight' clasp would make the bag more easily accessible.
This bag is beautiful. I ordered the new black color and the leather is soft and the bag is a good size. But that clasp! It's way too hard to open. I really want to like and keep this bag, but I refuse to have sore fingers just to get in and out of a purse. So it will be returned. Please consider redesigning the clasp on this bag.
I couldn't wait to get my dark coffee brown hobo purse today, but I just don't love this bag and have to return it. Here's why:
The leather is perfect. The thickness, the workmanship, the smell... It's just perfect, however, the design is flawed. First, I needed a cross body bag because my regular purses bother my shoulders and I needed something to take the pressure off. The strap on this bag is a tad to narrow, which means it creates pressure points on the shoulder. In addition, the buckle is exactly centered on the strap which means it falls right on my shoulder blade (I am 5'6", medium build). It is painful to carry, even for a short while and I can actually feel pain down my arm because of the buckle pressure. I adjusted the strap to different lengths, but the buckle still hits the same spot. This could easily be fixed by offsetting the buckle a bit or adding a shoulder pad. Since the whole purpose in buying a cross body is to reduce the pain, this is a no go.
Second, the clasp on the bag is impossible to open and close easily. I have watched the video over and over and I am convinced that the clasp must have changed since the original design. I have what I like to call "man hands". They are big and very strong hands for a woman. The clasp was impossible for me to close with my thumb unless I held it at a certain angle. If I close it at that angle, it is impossible to open because the grip for the clasp actually falls behind the lip of the leather flap. If I clasp it with my forefinger, I have to hold the bag up with my other hand at a certain angle to open it and also to close it, which means a (very difficult) two- handed open and close. I can just envision standing at a store register struggling to open and close my bag. I like to get in and out quickly and this clasp makes that impossible for me. Since the whole purpose of a cross body bag is to free up your hands, this design just doesn't work for me.
Third, most cross body bags today have a second shorter handle for easily grasping your bag to move it (from the car, for example). There is such a handle on the bucket backpack. This bag needs one of those to make it fully functional.
I will say that the inside cell phone pocket is great and large enough for my iPhone 6 Plus.
So this one didn't work for me and with just a little tweaking this could be the perfect bag.
I bought this item from a Dave's Deal and have to say I can't find anything wrong with it. It has a beautiful scar on the front and a partial brand on the back corner. The new tobacco is slightly darker than the old tobacco, which doesn't bother me as this is only my second Saddleback product. My tobacco wallet is lighter but the two still go together nicely. I love the large open interior and the large back pocket. The inside holds my long trifold wallet, my sunglass case, keys, phone, and a few lipsticks with room to spare. The keys and phone are usually in the open back pocket as it is hard to get into the purse while out and about, however I do like the security of the clasp. My first suggestion would be to redesign the strap for the bag, as other reveiwers have stated it is uncomfortable no matter how long or short you make it. My other suggestions would be to add a handle to the top as I find myself grabing the top of the bag to pick it up/ put it down etc and I could also see using a handle as a second way to carry, also a key clip in the back pocket would be great as I have my work badge and keys in the back pocket and would feel more secure if they were clipped in. Overall I love the look and the size and I would purchase this bag again especially at the Dave's Deal pricing.
I purchased this bag just after Christmas and it arrived today. It is beautiful and spacious and is exactly what I was looking for. You can see the care and quality workmanship that goes into each piece. The leather is lovely and smells amazing, and I can't wait to show it off. I would buy from here again with complete confidence and would absolutely recommend this bag to someone looking for a large quality purse. Simple and elegant. It is pricey but can last a life time and will not go out of style. Well worth the money.
I bought this purse as a Christmas gift for my mother. Upon opening it she cried and then soon after took all her belongings/items from her old purse and put them into the new Saddleback Leather purse I bought her. She then threw away her previous purse :) I bought the chestnut color and like I said this purse is made forever! You can also tell that it will only look better and better as it gets broke in threw the years :) I want to say thanks to Dave & all the Saddleback employees for making my moms Christmas one to remember! Merry Christmas to all of you @ Saddleback Leather!
