So I love love this bag. First, it softens up & then the closure does become a lot easier to use. I agree with other reviewers who say they'd prefer a slightly different style clip. But the learning curve is quick and the leather softens enough to make it functional in a reasonably short time. And if you're bummed because you want to buy/keep this bag but are worried about/having trouble with the strap clip coming undone at very inconvenient times... just turn the clip around so the opening is facing away from the bag. I've had one odd torque where it flipped off since rotating the opening, but that's it. Before I did that, it came off a half a dozen times in the first hour I was trying the shoulder strap out. Do this and you'll love your bag & it will become your durable, dependable go-to. Enjoy!

This was my first Saddleback Bag. My husband brought it in Tobacco a few months ago for my bday. At first, like others, I had trouble with the clasp, but now I have got used to opening it, and the leather holding the D-ring for the clasp has softened a bit.
Tip: To open the clasp easier I always push up the leather attachment holding the D-Ring, and pull down on the clasp, so the ring a clasp are closer. The leather attachment holding the D-ring has now positioned itself slightly in an upwards position to help open the clasp.
As I have literally used my bag everyday it has softened up nicely, and I can even fit a lot more in there now than in the beginning. I like the idea of the clasp closure as it means I'm less likely to get pick-pocketed. The mini Hobo is the prefect bag for your everyday essentials - wallet, card holder, keys, hand cream, lipgloss, Cutlery set (my daughter can't use chop sticks so i carry a set for her in case we go out to eat) tissues, hand wipes,sun/glasses, selfie stick (thats what i can fit into my bag). If you have this bag already, keep persisting with the clasp, and in time it will be a breeze. If you don't have this bag I hope the tip on how to open it helps.
I got the full-size hobo in chestnut about a year and a half ago. At the time, I really liked it but wished it came in true black (at the time it was only available in the gray carbon), and that there was a somewhat smaller version. And as if in answer to my wishes, the mini hobo came out and the black was reintroduced!
My new purse is here and I've been using it for a few months. It's a very cute bag that's perfect for holding my wallet, car keys, and cellphone. It seems solidly constructed, and I like that the black doesn't show scratches or wear much (at least not so far). I'm a bit mystified by the reviews saying the clasp is difficult--from day one I've had no problems with it. I do remember having a bit of trouble with the full-size hobo when I first got it, but nothing that made bemoan the weakness of my fingers or resort to pliers. From the pictures I was worried it would look kind of chunky, but in person this isn't an issue. Overall I'm very happy with it!
I purchased this purse as a treat for myself. At first (and after reading the reviews), I had some concerns regarding the clasp. I can tell you that when I first started using the bag, the clasp was a major pain. But, as time has gone on (about a month), it has gotten alot easier. I've mastered the technique and I feel the clasp has loosened up a bit.
This is my daily purse. It's beautiful, it's sturdy, the leather is top quality, and I've gotten many compliments on it. So why 2 stars? On one side of the strap there's a wonderfully riveted hook clasp. Love that side. The other side is an adjustable closure with belt loop type holes. Ever since I've had it least twice a week I'm walking through a parking lot or a store and my purse actually falls off my body and onto the ground. Not cool. I've tried putting a clear rubber band around the closure, that works for a few weeks and then eventually it breaks and the purse fall off my body and onto the ground again. Lately it seems the purse is falling off more and more; it's gotten to the point that I'm considering getting a new purse even through this one still looks brand new. I hope that Saddleback comes out with a fix for this problem and sends them to all the customers who have purchased this purse.
My fourth SBL item and the first I've been concerned about. Bought the purse as a wedding gift for my fiancee and I'm having a hard time, big man that I am, with that darn clasp! requires a really strong pinch strength to open it while keeping it from rotating, then flipping the ring off the open hook with the other hand. Not sure she can do that in a hurry getting to her cell phone! The strap has a carabiner-type hook which would have been perfect for the clasp in an appropriate size. Love the size and of course the smell! I'll try it out on her to see if she's pinch-perfect! I bought the full-sized Hobo for my daughter and that clasp, though a bit tricky was much easier to open.
I recently broke my leg and have been on crutches for the past 12 weeks. This bag is fantastic to wear when you need to keep your hands free! I wear it everywhere, doctor appointments, physical therapy, etc. and cannot count the compliments I have received on this bag. It holds everything I need for a day out and is very secure. I also purchased the coin purse and slim wallet and both fit just fine in the bag with room for my iPhone and keys too. I wear the bag cross body and I like that it does not bounce around or shift on my body too much. I am a petite person [5' 4", around size 4 or XS] and this bag does not overwhelm me, which can be an issue with larger bags. I wear it cross body at the smallest hole setting and it hits at high hip if that helps anyone. I have a leather punch to make additional holes in my bags, shoes, belts to make them smaller but did not have to use it on this bag. Very pleased with my purchase and will come back for more!
Just received the Mini hobo bag I will be giving my wife for Christmas. I'm sure she will love it if she can ever get it open! Women, smaller hands (some of them arthritic)! This is an I'll conceived closure for a women's purse, They want a secure closure with quick and easy access. I envision my wife with one foot on the bag struggling with both hands to open the clasp. Prediction - likely headed back to you the day after Christmas.
I looked at this style of bag for several years but could not find the right size, either to big or to small. I'm petite 5'1" 120lb sits perfect on my hip crossed bodied. The clasp is a little tricky and will take some getting use to. All in all a beautiful purse. My husband of 15 yrs has never compliment my purse before until today. If you are looking for a classic style that will last a lifetime look no further.
This purse is both rugged and classy at the same time. I was expecting something very tiny but it ended up being bigger and the perfect size really. Fits everything I care to carry without being too heavy. I'm petite so weight does matter. It feels like I've already had it for years, it's so comfortable and familiar. Thanks for a solid product!
Bought this in Chestnut on spec for She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed, its a fraction of the price of her Italian pieces and I figured if it was as well made as my FPB, satchel, notepad etc etc then I'd get some well-needed credit points. We are both very impressed, usual SB build quality etc and looks smart both casual and
The closure is going to take some getting used to, but if we can't open it in one go then the light-fingered brigade will be equally puzzled. The opening is more tapered than the photos suggest (Dave, get some videos up of your newer stuff already), so I know I'll get stung for a new purse that fits.
As an aside, I'm in Australia and have ordered from SB four times, never had a drama from Customs and delivery is max two weeks - the friendly support crew will also help with postage etc
I consider every purse I've owned until this point highly inferior to this purse. ;)
This is the purse to end all purses. It is (almost) the perfect size. It is lightweight. The strap is EXACTLY the right length (I'm 5'5"). It's heavy duty. At first, you may struggle to get your wallet to fit. It will stretch. It has an inside pocket for... well, I'm really not sure what it's for. I keep a pocketknife there currently. It also has an outside pocket that your phone may fit into. My only complaint is that the clasp is a little tricky to get the hang of opening and closing. It's a great clasp, and won't break anytime soon, but it also is a super tight fit and sometimes can't be opened / closed with one hand.
My biggest wish is that it were about an inch longer (wider?) so that some of the SBL wallets would fit in there. I have a decent wallet in there now (not SBL, unfortunately) and even that is a tight fit!
All in all, though, best purse I have ever owned; am even considering getting this in the larger size, or in another color, because it is such a great purse!
I wanted so badly to keep this bag. It is beautiful! Finally a bag that is the perfect size. However, I have had two and both had to be returned because of the impossible clasp. SB customer service is the best (you need to train COMCAST reps). I absolutely could not open the first bag. My entire family tried to open the clasp. Finally my husband got it opened but couldn't get it off the hook (not enough slack he said). I contacted SB and sent the first one back. They sent me another bag in 3 days. Unfortunately, while my daughter finally opened it, I couldn't close it. Not enough slack and again couldn't get the clasp to open. The clasp is simply too big and industrious for this bag. Please consider using the smaller clasp you have on the clutch.
I have been looking for a small handbag to take on day trips that doesn't weigh me down but can still carry what I need (small wallet, phone, compact, lipstick, and keys). It is the perfect size; I thought the regular hobo was a bit big for what I needed. The smell of the leather is delicious and I love that it has silver hardware. Perfect with boots and jeans. Quality is outstanding. Your bags are the coolest and I am so happy to find this company after years of designer purses that are of inferior quality and outrageously overpriced. Thank you, Dave!!!
First, I need to compliment SB customer service; they were a joy to work with and super helpful. And this purse is of the usual 11 on a 10 point scale in terms of quality. But...
I ordered 2 mini hobos...one in coffee brown and one in carbon black. When they arrived, we noticed that the carbon black's clasp was almost impossible to use...it was much heavier in terms of quality, which meant that its spring was more robust and required more force to open. Since it was different than the one on the coffee brown (and also different to other purses we have from SB), I assumed it was a mistake. SB customer service was awesome and provided free shipping back for a replacement.
The replacement came...same issue...thought it was an oddball mistake....SB customer service once again A+ and provided free shipping to exchange.
3rd purse came...same problem. Turns out that the clasp hardware has been updated to the new style. The new clasp is not only more robust (and thus requires more force to open) but also only opens 0.25 inches versus 0.50 inches for the old style. Therefore, requires 2 hands to use...or in the case of my mom, she couldn't use it at all (not enough strength in her hands).
Would be great if SB would return to the old style clasp.
I am the happy owner of numerous SB products....and am still very passionate about the brand and the quality. And will continue to purchase SB products (hoping for the soft sided luggage to be released!) But I will be staying away from purses going forward.
When Suzette and I first got married, we move to one of the most romantic and scenic towns in Mexico. We found a real cute little home up on the hill with a wooden bathtub and a literal door-BELL with a rope tied to it for people to ring at the door. It was a cool cool place.
Every weekday, my new bride and I would climb through a broken part of broken gate and walk on down the hill, through the 5 minute long tunnel and into downtown Guanajuato. We usually ate breakfast at some little restaurant on one of the squares and then I would walk here the rest of the way to her language school. I would then walk 20 minutes back up the hill to the truck and drive 45 minutes to Leon to work on my bags.
I forget the bag Suzette carried her things around town with, and that’s the point. Her bag was completely forgettable. It was average. It just blended in. It was like every other bag out there… I think. The reason I say, “I think” is because I can’t remember it. If it would’ve been this Hobo Purse, i would have told you all about it because it’s memorable and gets more unforgettable the more you use it.
Hopefully, you’ll own a memorable bag like this one during some of the more unforgettable times in your life. May those times not be far ahead.
