This is an almost perfect bag for every day use. It's weight is perfect and frankly makes it a more practical bag than the leather versions. Although it is good for daily carry, it really shines as a secondary bag while hiking. I could keep this on under my backpack and it was essentially a large pocket for easy access to a water bottle, food, and maps. The one hand closure makes this even easier.
The only thing I would change is to give the bag just a little more "pooch" since the canvas doesn't stretch much. I feel like just an inch or so of extra give would be ideal.
I am a professional healthcare chaplain, and quite often I travel to other nations with a group of Christian brothers. Our goal is to do what we can to make capital improvements in areas where the needs are so great. I usually carry a smaller bag that I can have access to when I am on the airplane or when I am in some remote village somewhere in this amazing world. My buddies often tease me about my "man-purse", but NO MORE! This Indiana bag is perfect, and I can't wait to use it on my upcoming trip to Malaysia and the Philippines. Thank you for this great bag!
This is a bag worthy of your know who. I finally received it today. I am well used to the high quality of Saddleback and this still impresses. It is a great size. Fits my iPad Pro 9.7 and the rest of my EDC. It also fits my MacBook Retina 12" in it's SB sleeve. I can't wait for it to get well worked in. Another awesome product.
It took me a few days to convince myself to buy this bag and now that I finally have it in hand, I'm so glad I did! This is a quality, no nonsense bag. It is built very well and feels like it will last a lifetime (and longer). Plenty of room for my keys, leatherman knife, iPhone 6s, field notes, pens/pencil and a water bottle. I also want to add that the canvas is tough, but it's so much more flexible than when you first get your leather. This will be the bag that will go everywhere with me, chalking up the stories and the miles.
The bag that you know who used to carry all his gear can now be yours! It's an extremely well made, durable and great looking bag. If you want or need a bag to carry everyday, this is it! I use it to carry my wallet, iPhone, keys, leatherman, flashlight, lighter, earphones, etc. Don't hesitate if you want it. Just get this legendary bag and live the dream.
I already have a few Saddleback products, including the large leather satchel. The new canvas Indiana Gear Bag intrigued me, however, and I jumped on it when they launched the product. I am very pleased with my purchase. This canvas bag is a little smaller and noticeably lighter and more comfortable to carry than the large leather satchel. If I'm going to be carrying it around a lot and don't need the greater capacity (and all the interior compartments) of the leather satchel, then this is my new go-to bag. It looks cool - very robust, not girly. I can carry a fair amount of "stuff" (cell phone + charger, Kobo, glasses, bottle of water, wallet, etc...) if I'm going to be out and about over the course of a day. As others have noted, the new closure is really good.
I wish it had an interiour key strap with clasp (like my leather satchel). I figured I could add it afterwards, but I notice that Saddleback doesn't sell the key straps separately any more :(
It is pricey for a bag, but I decided to cry once and then enjoy using it forever. If you can get past the price, I highly recommend the bag.
I truly adore this bag, it has become my daily commuter—perfect size for the gear I carry every day. The waxed canvas is indeed gorgeous, and the leather accents are very robust with the back panel unexpectedly and extremely welcome. I look forward to breaking this baby in and applying more wax next year. My only quibbles are with the shoulder pad and handle. The shoulder pad really needs to be thinner or at least removable. The leather is way too thick (can't believe I'm writing this)—it's uncomfortable and unlikely to break in unless I find myself in a war-torn nation. I've managed to worry it free and am rocking the bag sans pad, but it really should be more easily removable at the very least. My second issue is with the handle—there's no leather reinforcement. The bag noticeably sags under load when held by the handle—it should be reinforced. Still, the bag it awesome, and I highly recommend it.
Great bag from the get go!
First we all love the leather bags..... but this is a third of the weight, in a week it is broken in and it has the most functional front clasp system ever. Easy one handed operation. There is no other bag out there like this. Handles iPad with SBL case, note books, keys and glasses case well. Perfect all day satchel.
I Just ordered the medium bag for my laptop.
Dave you've done it again!
It seems many who purchased these new Mountainback designs were aware, for a good while, that they were coming. I was not one of those people as I only found out by Dave’s announcement video the week before they launched. It came at an interesting time for me as I had been pouring over the small and medium satchels in various colors and options. Nothing seemed quite right with those, as awesome as they are. Enter the canvas version…
I had long found the idea of a canvas/leather satchel to be ideal, but I had never really found anything that suited me. All the options from the *major manufacturers* of canvas bags were not in the style I was looking for. I found a few, over the years, that I liked stylistically, but they were often in department stores and made of awful materials for their price (think designer brands). This Mountainback - particularly this Indiana - is exactly what I wanted.
Some have made mention of the lack of outer pockets, but for me this was a positive aspect. I wanted a small satchel to carry my daily essentials in while keeping them secure. With this style of closure there really is no reason to have outer pockets – the access is too simple but very secure.
I carry a paperback book, a Kindle Paperwhite, a CCW, sunglasses, and I have plenty of room for any odd bits I may pick up in my daily comings and goings. For me that is part of the purpose of the satchel (man bag). I need the extra resourceful pocket to carry my toddler’s action figures, or to stuff the mail in from our PO Box. Sometimes I find myself in a sporting goods store at lunch, and I need somewhere to stick the couple of boxes of pistol cartridges I purchased. This bag does all that.
It is certainly not for everyone, but for those who need a no-nonsense, and lightweight (yes, its light) bag, this is certainly something to consider.
This is exactly what I have been looking for for quite some time - size, materials, design, etc. Got mine today and couldn't be happier. Someone mentioned that their iPad doesn't fit inside the inner sleeve - I had no problem. I am using the new 9.7" iPad Pro with the Apple keyboard case. Fits just fine, but as the other reviewer mentioned, it will also fit in the main compartment. I love the heftiness and thickness of the waxed canvas, the leather touches, etc. There is a lot of storage room in the main compartment - obviously not a full day pack, but you can easily fit a bag with your charging cables, everyday carry stuff, books, water bottle, light compact jacket, etc. Great work!
Received my bag today, so this is more of a first impressions. The bag and the strap have a nice weight to them, it's (rough ballpark) about the size of a medium Round Satchel (probably a little larger than a small Round Satchel, but I haven't seen one of those). I have an iPad Air 2 in a Saddleback case and that will NOT fit inside sleeve inside the bag. However, it will fit perfectly in the main compartment, with about two inches of depth to spare. When loaded up with the leather-cased iPad, my glasses case, and a small toolkit for work the bag (4-5lbs) feels comfortable, and doesn't flap around in high-speed winds when I'm on the motorcycle.
I only have a few concerns with the bag and MountainBack as a whole. First, Canvas is tight-woven cotton, exactly like denim. Plain denim jeans will wear and tear over time, and I'm not sure how this will be reflected with the 100 year warranty. Denim also shreds like paper when it meets asphalt, I actually put my bike down at about 25-30mph last summer, and my messenger bag survived with few scuffs, I'm not sure if a cotton bag could take the same abuse. Now maybe it's not supposed to, this is canvas, not leather! That brings me to my second concern, price. While the leather products here are reasonably priced, the canvas isn't too far behind it. A round satchel (I think) goes anywhere from $300-$400, and those come with the outer pockets. The Indiana Bag does not have side pockets, only a body-side back-pouch, and the inside of the bag. When the Indiana Bag is $250 and a similar dimensioned leather bag is $350, why not just jump up to leather? After all, they're going to fight over it when you're dead.
Now my concerns could be crazy, but who knows? I hope I'm proven wrong and this bag is just as tough as the leather bags of equilivant size. I'm definitely keeping my bag, and I'm definitely going to use it (considering it's about half the weight of a medium round satchel). And the new closure design? Fantastic, works like a charm. I'm rating the Indiana bag 4/5, mainly because I think the price is a bit steep when compared to the leather bags available on this site. If all the leathers are weighing you down, give canvas a shot!
I don't know if I can edit the review, but next time I'm browsing Saddleback, I will report back with results,
Somebody said that once.... But with this bag... Years and mileage will only add to the character.
The materials and construction are top notch. The canvas is thick and durable. The leather is the standard saddleback quality. Everything classically overengineered and riveted. Not too heavy, easy to use as a primary bag.
Regarding functionality, the strap/leather pad is comfortable on the shoulder and adjustable to suit your size. The one-handed closure is genius, works better than advertised and quite sturdy. In terms of storage, I use the main compartment for books/papers/Saddleback iPadAir case, the internal flap for my Saddleback Moleskine notebook, my Saddleback ID wallet fits nicely in behind the riveted leather backing, and two standard sized pens fit in the pen sleeve.
The bag isn't oversized, but it can carry ALOT. I'm looking forward to putting a few years and mileage on this bag.
Dave, thanks for another great product. Impressive.
Another high quality bag from Saddleback. I really like the closure system that was designed for the bag. It diffinatley stands out from other bags as a high quality piece. The hardware on the bag is top notch quality. I love my new bag !
