Well worth the wait!

This is not my first Saddleback Leather purchase and it definitely won't be the last. The new Ipad Pro case does not disappoint! Love it! Love it! Love it!

Beautiful Leather, Horrible Design

by

I couldn't wait for Saddleback to have an iPad Pro case and I ordered one as soon as they become available. This was despite that a holder for the Apple pencil was left off the design. That item is the most needed accessory for this new iPad and it is a curious omission. A holder for the Apple Keyboard was put in the design, a decision that really isn't needed. The pencil holder is a must. But having quite a few Saddleback items I decided to order one and I would improvise something for the pencil. Well it arrived today 12/23/15, a Christmas gift to myself.

Love the smell of the leather and I went to put my iPad in it when I realized the design is backwards. The case is designed for the iPad to be on the left not the right. Which is again curious because the other iPad cases from Saddleback all are designed for the right side, as well as every folio case I have ever seen for the iPad. Now I can use with it on the right but with where the camera hole is the home button will now be on top. Luckily I don't need the camera so I will turn it so that the home button is on the bottom.

I am very disappointed with this case. The design looks rushed with no thought given to how the iPad is used or even how all previous Saddleback iPad cases were designed. And again no holder for the Apple pencil which again is an item that is most needed for the new abilities of this iPad. I should send it back but I love the leather look and feel. Hopefully someone at Saddleback will redesign this properly. Maybe I will buy it. Maybe not.

Two star rating. Great leather as usual. Designed is totally backwards and if I had known I might not have purchased it.

These are the best

I just received the two new IPad pro cases and am totally pleased. I have had several different leather cases for earlier IPads but never the quality of the Leatherback cases. Everything about the case is fantastic. The quality of the outer leather, the inner lining, the attention to detail and the stitching are first rate. Now I understand why they sell out so quickly. They are definitely well worth the wait if sold out. I'll be back for other products.

Great case....but

The case is beautiful and protects the device. However, you will not be able to use the optional keyboard with the Saddleback case on. To work in Word or to type email, you have to remove the Saddleback case. i think Dave might have to take out his buck knife again on this one.

Some deep flaws .. Apple Smart Keyboard users, read this first ** Fix included **

by

This is Saddleback's iPad Pro cover - read reviews of their iPad Air cover to get a sense of the quality and fit, all the comments there apply, but you need to read this review to understand what you are facing:

1. The case opens right, because the smart keyboard connector is on the left - so when not using the keyboard, you are likely usually using the iPad upside down in portrait mode. Which is fine, but they put the logo on the front essentially upside down for this very common use-case. They should have put the logo in-between the straps, vertically, to present a more balanced appearance overall for when you are using the case like a book (case spine to the left). Not a lot of thought went into this. The dog logo on the back is similarly upside down when using the iPad in portrait mode spine-left.

2. THIS IS THE FLAW - Dave's case-cutting video shows how they got the smart keyboard cover to attach, which is basically to make the back cover just slightly narrower than the front. In the video, you can see the keyboard attaches magnetically perfectly as a result. What they don't show you, and what I am astounded they didn't test, is that the keyboard will not activate unless the magnetic spine sits in the shallow groove atop the keyboard - this is how it rejects keypresses when not in keyboard mode (ie. with the keyboard folded back behind the iPad, you don't get false keypresses). BUT, the corners of the Saddleback case sit atop the smart keyboard, preventing the magnets in the spine of the keyboard cover from engaging the magnetic switches in that slot, since it hovers above the groove. You CANNOT use the keyboard as shown in the illustrations on the Saddleback site, and their claim that it "works" with the smart keyboard is clearly WRONG - it doesn't. I do not know how/why they did not test this.

Here is how I solved it - I had a non-keyboard smartcover for the iPad Pro, which (@ $75 Canadian...gulp), I sliced the spine off of. I then allowed this spine to magnetically attach to the spine of the smart keyboard, doubling the height of it. It will only go on in one orientation due to magnetic polarization - if they misalign, flip your second spine around and it should snap into perfect alignment.

With this setup, the smart keyboard still fits neatly into the hand slot (which they DID make the correct width, and which works well), with the second spine tagging along for the ride. You can also remove this second spine for times when you aren't using the Saddleback case, although it grabs on so tightly you could also leave it in place.

I think, but haven't tested, that it's possible that you could place a small magnet on the left hand edge of the smart keyboard's groove, which seems to be where the sensor sits, and accomplish the same thing without having to sacrifice a $75 smart cover, but I'm not 100% sure about that - maybe a small flat fridge magnet could simply be affixed to the left hand side making the smart keyboard "live" at all times.

Finally, the lack of a pencil holder does seem absurd - another 1/8" built into the spine (maybe not even that much would be needed), with a simple band of leather stitched in, or a second tiny band stitched to the inside cover where the hand pocket is, are all that would have been required.

Overall, it's a quality case - a Saddleback through and through. But the company is going to get a ton of poor reviews, and a TON of returns when people discover these problems. I feel a bit bad for them. At the same time, they should have tested this - the negative reviews I am sure will follow are, unfortunately, deserved, based on the out of the box experience.

For that reason, I have to give the case a low rating as well - with my fix, it's a 4 or 5, but out of the box, it's a 2.

But if you're a fan of Saddleback's products, and you know you are going to keep your iPad Pro around for several years (I figure it's easily going to be usable for 4+ years), there is a fix to use the excellent Smart Keyboard, that doesn't require permanently modifying the case or the keyboard.

So I conclude my review satisfied, and hope that others might benefit from my fix. I'm not returning mine.

Beautifull case ..but

It's a beautiful case and will protect the IPad Pro, but it does appear to be an awkward design. I did want to wait for Saddleback to have their case available before purchasing any other. But like the other review seems to be designed somewhat backwards. I went back to view the image online to compare and the image also has the iPad on the right side, but the home button at the top. Just have to get used to the iPad on the left side I guess.

Wow, never thought I would be disappointed in a Saddleback product

by

I've been a long time fan of Saddleback leather (having purchased three classic briefcases, a MacBook case, an iPad case and a wallet). I just received my brand-new iPad Pro case today. I always look forward to opening the package to get that amazing leather smell. Regrettably the smell was a toxic glue smell that overwhelms the leather. I grabbed my iPad and put it in, only to discover that the case is fundamentally backwards. I went back to the website to look at the photos, and the photos are quite misleading as it shows the case being used upside down. I did notice that the detailed text below the photo is accurate, but the picture? I Then connected my external keyboard to discover it actually doesn't work in the case, like shown in the video, and described on the website. I am also disappointed to discover that it is the rough suede pigskin liner, and not the typically smooth pigskin liner like the rest of my products. Sorry Dave, but I feel this design is rushed, and is a real miss.

not a virgin

by -

My first saddleback leather product was an iPad 3 case. There was nothing I would change. An excellent case that took a beating and my iPad survived it all. Now my iPad pro is sporting the same new threads from SBL and I think it's an excellent design with a few flaws. The previous straps with dual clasps and thinner leather backed with pigskin worked perfectly. The new ipp version simply has straps that are too thick. The second change was the addition of stiffeners in the clasps. Kind of forces you to lay the iPad on the opposite side. This thing will bend. Laying it clasp side down could prove perilous. I definitely prefer the old clasps. Lastly, the smoother, more durable feeling and less absorbent pigskin was better, hands down. Don't get me wrong. This is a friggin' sweet case, I'm just spoiled because I'm not a virgin to the high quality that comes from Saddleback Leather.

Huge Mistake....

by

Ordered and just received today. I'll be darned. The iPad pro has its nest on the LEFT HAND SIDE OF CASE! I'll return tomorrow. Very, very disappointed in SB for such an obvious mistake in design. Lefties will love it.

The usual quality...just missing some things

by -

I've come to love Saddleback leather, everything I've received has been of a higher quality than I thought possible (from briefcases and suitcases to wallets and belts). I've been buying these cases for all of my Apple products through the past few generations, so when I got my Pro, I anxiously awaited them to become available. Well, it arrived today, and it was exactly what I expected, high quality leather and a build quality for which I won't need to worry about making warranty claims. But I did have some issues...

For starters, yeah, it opens on the opposite side as all of the other cases. This is clearly done to provide access for the keyboard attachment, but it's unusual and will take some getting used to. Second, the lack of anything to allow the Apple Pencil to be carried with the case...this is a HUGE oversight for me. It would've been a simple addition anywhere on the case (even something like another bracket like what holds the straps would've worked). What I was expecting was a strap, like on every other iPad case, as a way to secure the iPad in the leather. This isn't how this case works (which would've been nice to see in the pictures), so my idea for a place to slide the pencil won't work. Third, the hole for the camera on my case is way off. It covers the bottom part of the lens, while leaving the top exposed (I can hit the power button through the camera hole). I feel like I can fix this by adding some padding to the bottom, but it's another thing that I think could've been better engineered.

I'm unsure whether I'm going to keep the case, but I probably will, if not just for the fact that I haven't seen anything I like better.

This won't work with the Apple Keybard

by -

Was finally to get my hands on the keyboard for the iPad Pro and after a bit of time trying to activate the keyboard, I figured out that the case won't work with keyboard due to not being able to make secondary magnetic connection. This is not my first SB iPad cover.... Really love my iPad 3 case.... But as others have pointed out, this may have been a bit of a miss. Not too sure about adding another magnet strip cut from another keyboard case as mentioned in another review... Also don't see a way this case could be retrofitted to make the keyboard functional... I don't really want to return either the case or the keyboard and I'm really not happy about these not working together. I guess I will wait for Dave to address this issue. This assumes that he is seeing these comments and no doubt, hearing from unsatisfied customers. Tentatively giving this three stars which may be generous...

Dave, do you I have any ideas?

left - right

by -

First, I love the sleeve. It is as quality as anything else from Dave and Saddleback Leather. The only thing is the picture on the web is a bit deceiving by having the iPad pro on the right side of the case upside down. So unless you look carefully or looking for this flaw, you would not think twice about left side - right side switch.

I don't mind that much that the iPad sits on the left side but then the strap needs to be designed the opposite way so the iPad does not sit on its face or on top of the strap. This seem to be a production blunder:

1 - the online pic is misleading;

2 - position of the iPad / strap is opposite of each other.

The case itself is very nice. I wish it would've been noted so at least I know before ordering it. I am going to keep it anyway but disappointing.

Why do you show the keyboard working with the case on when it doesn't work? Seems very deceptive to me.

by -

I've purchased many Saddleback products. This one fails for two reasons.

1) You show a picture of the keyboard working with the case on and it simply won't work. You have to take it completely out. REMOVE THOSE DECEPTIVE PICTURES PLEASE SO YOU DON'T DECEIVE MORE CUSTOMERS!

2) It does not form a flat writing surface inside the case. The loops on the back make writing on this awkward.

I really wish I would have just bought the sleeve, but with the picture of it working in the case with the keyboard I made the bad assumption that it would work. I bought this as soon as it came out and didn't see the several reviews that now mention the same flaws.

Several complaints

by -

Overall this is a great product for what it does. However, what it does is not what I thought when I ordered it. I fully agree with several of the reviews that the pictures here are deceiving. I ordered this case in anticipation of getting my iPad Pro, but was disappointed when I realized that the case has to be totally removed to use the keyboard. Given that the iPad Pro is being touted as a business device which would appeal to those of us who will frequently need to do more "computing" type activities on it, I think it should be made more clear. Also, I fully agree that something feels "backwards" about this case. At first, I assumed it was to allow for access to the new side port for the keyboard. However, if that were the case, then you would expect it to actually work with the keyboard...

Overall I'm disappointed with the design here. However, the quality, as with all Saddleback products, seems amazing.

Gaaaah, W-T-H Dave!

by

I love my Saddleback Leather but the iPad Pro case breaks my heart!

I can learn to live with the left handed cover hinge, but all your pictures with the Smart Keyboard implied you could use the keyboard for something other than a doily when also using the Saddleback Leather iPad Pro Case. Dave your customers trust you and believe in your products ... once broken, trust is hard to rebuild.

It is certainly a sad day for Saddleback customers 😔

Great Look, Not So Great Functionality

by -

I loved the look and ordered the case. The quality, as the reputation would have, was exceptional. However, the picture on the site portrayed the iPad Pro being used with the iPad Smart keyboard while in the case. This is simply not possible. The edge on the bottom of the case prevents the iPad from connecting to the Smart keyboard.I liked the case so much I spent two weeks trying to make this work somehow, but it just was not practical. The fine folks at Saddleback took it back without question.

I had ordered the Digital Paper Sleeve (the iPad Pro Sleeve was not in stock) prior to ordering the Case just to have something that would protect the brand new iPad Pro. The Sleeve works like a charm. The workmanship is outstanding, the leather is very nice, and there is just enough room in it for the Apple Pencil.

Very Satisfied

by -

This is my third iPad case from Saddleback Leather. I am as pleased with this one as I was with the first iPad case and the iPad Mini case.

I bought the iPad Pro case for my husband. His iPad Pro is for casual use, not business. He does not use the keyboard or pencil with it.

Initially, my husband told me the case was designed backwards. Basically, this means the HOME button is on the right side. After looking closely at the case and the seating of the iPad, I discovered the only reason for me to seat it this way is the back camera alignment hole. Because my husband does not use his iPad camera, I was able to turn the iPad around in the case. This would allow him to continue to use his iPad Pro the same as he did his previous iPad. He is happy, which makes me happy.

The quality and workmanship of the case is by far some of the best on the market.

Love my case

by -

This is one of many Saddleback products which I own, and like others, I waited until a case was available before buying an iPad Pro. I was aware of the design complaints, but was confident the quality of the product would far out-weigh any shortcomings others could conjure. After using the case for a couple of months, I believe this might be the best item I've bought from SB thus far.. Fantastic workmanship and beautiful leather, it never fails to draw attention as soon as it comes out of the bag. I couldn't be more pleased with this purchase.

People need to settle down!

by -

I have been buying Saddleback products for years, so when I saw the iPad Pro case I was excited for the opportunity to purchase. However, after reading several of the reviews, I was nervous about the "backwards" design and the lack of pencil holder. After several months of researching other cases, I came back to Saddleback and purchased the case. I have been using it daily for eight weeks, and I will tell you the quality is incredible (as you would expect), the "backwards design" is not an issue, and I store my pencil in the keyboard holder without any problems. I have looked at every case in the market and nothing compares to Saddleback. As with every other Saddleback product, it stands out and you will be very satisfied you made the purchase.

Review Follow-Up

by

First know that I ordered the iPad Pro case at about the same time I ordered my iPad. After living with it for about a month, I returned it when I could not say that I was absolutely and completely happy with it. Yes, I was disappointed that the keyboard did not work with the case. What bothered me the most was the notch that was supposed to accommodate the keyboard and served as a reminder that this was to some degree a design failure. Since returning the case, I have been looking for a suitable replacement cover but have yet to find one that approaches the level of quality of Saddleback Leather. I have tried to contact owner Dave to implore him to revamp the case so that the notch is eliminated. I'm told that my messages have been passed on to Dave but I have yet to hear a word. I find it disheartening when a company gets so large that a potential customer cannot make contact with the person in charge. Were there to be such a revamp of the design, without question I would order another one. I truly love their products and have since purchased the laptop case for my iPad Pro. If I had a real need to go along with the very strong desire for a few of the other bags, I would order more after figuring out a way to pay for them! As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. With Saddleback Leather, you get works of art.

Dave, if you happen to read this, revamp the case to eliminate the notch and I will submit my order immediately and without hesitation. As far as it being "backward", that too was to accommodate the keyboard I suppose, but really has no effect on the user experience as far as I could tell. The notch is a detractor that I really hope goes away with future production. My fear is that You will give up on this case and cease production without a revamp and second chance.

I wanted badly to love it

by -

If Saddleback made underwear, I'd buy it. I have backpacks, briefcase, wallet, moleskin cover, you name it.

The quality is second to none. And the smell of the leather! Oh man!

I love the Apple Smart Keyboard and the case simply does not work with it. Sadly, I am having to send it back. I hope Dave will reengineer the case!

If you don't care about the Apple Smart Keyboard, this the the case of all cases.

Despite pre-purchase assurances from SBL, DOES NOT work with Apple Smart Keyboard.

by -

The typical SBL quality is present; however, this case does NOT work with the Apple Smart Keyboard even though I was promised it would by SBL staff prior to ordering the case. The keyboard will attach to the iPad but will not fold properly and therefor the keyboard will not activate and will not work. VERY frustrating that this is the case even AFTER I went out of my way to verify it would not be a problem before placing my order.

Useful case for iPad Pro

by -

Even after reading some of the questionable reviews below, I bought this case, I've loved my previous ones and wanted to see if this would work or not. It meets my needs well. I only use the keyboard < 25% of the time (maybe less) but I do like to have it with me. Having a place for the skinny, slippery pencil was a bigger issue. It fits snugly, nestled in next to the keyboard. That's great. When I do need the keyboard, I don't find it too big a hassle to just pull it all out and hook it up. Like the person below, I did put the iPad in backwards, as it's much more natural, and I doubt I ever use the camera. Is this the best engineered thing I've used, no, but it sure is the best looking case I've seen. I am looking for some sort of configuration or hack that will let me use the keyboard wo the second connection, but until then, I love having a Saddleback case for it.

iPad pro case-- It works with apple keyboard

by -

Before purchasing this case I read all of the reviews about people being disappointed with the Apple Keyboard not working with this particular case. I read one review that told about a hack to make the keyboard work and thought i would give it a try. I own several saddleback items from wallets to i pad cases to various bags. I have always been super impressed by the quality of their items, and I am happy to say that this particular case did not disappoint me.

First let me talk about the apple keyboard. I read reviews on the keyboard before purchasing and the top two complaints that I saw was 1) fixed screen position, you could not adjust the position of the screen and 2) the iPad pro did not seem very stable when typing on your lap etc... Let me tell you the Saddleback Leather i pad pro case fixes both of those problems.

To make this work you will have to get the magnetic hinge from another cover. I went to a local electronics store and asked if they had any damaged i pad pro covers without the keyboard that they would want to sell at a discounted price. They did so I purchased one for $10.00. I removed the magnetic hinge from that cover and snapped it on the groove in the keyboard part of the Apple keyboard. The magnet sticks very well, actually so well that you will not need to take it off (just leave it on there). You then snap the magnetic hinge from the apple keyboard on the i pad pro just like you normally would. With this setup you do not have to have the keyboard folded, you can actually keep it straight (the way it is shown in some of the SBL pictures) and you can type quite comfortably. the other huge benefit is now you have a way to adjust the angle of the screen by using the SBL cover.

I own a construction company and find myself working out of my truck or in the field the majority of the time. The apple keyboard without the SBL case was a little flimsy to me when trying to type on my lap or in the drivers seat of my truck. But with the setup I described above the combination works perfect. I could not be happier with the case, it is absolutely a work of art.

Thank you Saddleback Leather for attention to detail and quality.

Beautiful IPad Pro Case

by -

This fits my iPad Pro very well & looks great. The price is very reasonable for the quality your getting, the workmanship is second to none. It's much nicer than anything Apple offers. I've purchased other things from Dave before and as always I'm very happy with my purchase.

First, I love the sleeve. It is as quality as anything else from Dave and Saddleback Leather. The only thing is the picture on the web is a bit deceiving by having the iPad pro on the right side of the case upside down. So unless you look carefully or looking for this flaw, you would not think twice about left side - right side switch.

I don't mind that much that the iPad sits on the left side but then the strap needs to be designed the opposite way so the iPad does not sit on its face or on top of the strap. This seem to be a production blunder:

1 - the online pic is misleading;
