I bought this case because I love leather products! It reminds me of the leather on my grandpa's horses' saddles...and therefore of my grandpa. However, this case has more than paid for itself, simply by helping me avoid costly damage. I have absolutely zero fear of dropping my iPad/handing it to my 3 kids (under 8 years of age) and letting them go, etc. I've dropped it more than I can count, and never has it impacted the iPad within it. Extremely sturdy...and it still smells good after 6 months! The random scratches (and some not-so-random child productions) just add to the character.
- Fits the iPad Retina, iPad 4, iPad 3 and the iPad 2
- Protects against shock, not just scratches
- Can be folded into stand for reading, typing or watching videos
- Thick leather sewn edges also absorb impact
- Perfectly snug case: not too tight, not too loose
- No breakable parts, e.g. zippers, buttons, etc.
- Because of natural oils shade may vary
- Dimensions (approximate size):
- 7 ¾” W x 9 ¾” H x ¾” D
- Weight: 1 pound

"... Saddleback Leather no longer discriminates aganist any cow on the basis of age, appearance, lactose intolerance... if the beast has a natural marking or brand, or whether or not they worship the Divine Bovine."
Truth is, sometimes beauty is only skin deep... like with cows. Their poetry is notoriously terrible, but man, their hides are nature's art. We don't believe that flawlessness equals beauty. Beauty is when we're able to see someting as it really is.
This is true with humans too. There are lots of quality people who are really beautiful not in spite of, but because of the masks life has given them.
We took both of our iPads driving and flying on a trip through Scotland, Kenya, Rwanda, Australia, and New Zealand over a period of two months, and our iPads kept
Thanks foe the great leather case you made, best leather I ever seen ,love the smell and looks vintage, very recommend !!!! Only downside is a hight price for delivery and border pay in EU,in total was a full price of a item, but still worse it! Thanks
I had my iPad in an otter box case and while I felt it was protected I hated the fact that it was so bulky and heavy...I stumbled upon this site a few weeks ago and decided I would invest in one of these cases. I purchased the tobacco case and from the time I opened the box I have not been disappointed...I feel my iPad is safe and very well protected and I love the look and feel of the case....Im waiting now on the satchel bag to be released in tobacco....Im a NEW customer for life....
All the gear all the time works for riding motorcycles. This case works the same for my iPad as my leathers work for me. I'm not easy on gear and the standard iPad covers just didn't seem to be me resistant. The Saddleback case is.
The sewn leather edges provide impact protection for edge drops and the thick leather protects when dropped flat or wedged into a bag. The straps keep the iPad in the case when closed and give you a stand that works equally as well on the seat back tray on a flight or at the bar.
I use my iPad as a translator while traveling and the Saddleback case is a good icebreaker when meeting new people. Good leather seems to be appreciated no matter where you go.
There is some slip when the case is open as there is nothing other than gravity and friction holding the iPad into the case. Not a big deal as long as you orient the case correctly. The one hundred year warranty is ok, but Apple won't promise to keep building devices that will fit for that many years. I suppose it will be a great looking picture frame when the iPad 17 comes out.
Just recently picked up a iPad case in chestnut so it now has it's passport for travelling!! Like to take my iPad with me on trips so it will now travel protected and in style. This is "hands down" the best case I have seen for the iPad and I have had a few. Provides great protection, comfortable to hold and looks amazing.
Once again another AWESOME Saddleback product
Best iPad case ever! I love the design, the tobacco leather and the rugged look of this case. It will most definitely outlive the iPad.
My only complaint is that the leather straps have softened up so much that the case doesn't stay propped open when it's in the lap position. This is really just a minor issue as it is not a problem to stuff something in between the folded over front and back of the case. I am currently using a small juggling ball for this purpose However, it would be great if Saddleback made something that I could put there that would go with the leather and design of the case. My green, yellow, red and blue juggling ball just doesn't go well with the rugged look of the case.
Great product and I highly recommend.
First the pros:
It is very well made. A work of art in today's mass produced world. I don't see wearing out or the case coming apart in my lifetime.
Highly protective. Ipad should survive anything but a direct nuclear strike or dropping into a lake. Probably the most protective case short of the survivor cases, but they really impact usability of the ipad, which this case does not.
Looks great. Smells great. I get compliments on it frequently.
Able to access all the ipad controls, speaker, camera, etc. It does not come between you and using your ipad.
Now the cons:
It's heavy. Will add a pound to your ipad.
It's thick. Basically triples the thickness of your ipad.
Now, I could live with those two cons, for that is what gives the case it's protective qualities, which I sorely need being an inveterate dropper of all things electronic.
But these next cons really irk me...
It's uncomfortable to hold in a reading position. Really uncomfortable. When you are holding the ipad to read, the right edge is very thick and sharp to hold. Not well suited for holding at all. Surely some way could have been made to soften this edge, maybe rolling the top layer of leather over the edge to make a round soft edge instead of the sharp hard edge it now has. It's so uncomfortable that I sometimes remove the ipad from the case, which negates the protective qualities. You cannot comfortably hold your ipad with your right hand. Horrible design. This may be the reason I quit using this case. I might try covering the edge with something like moleskin and see if that helps.
I hate the closure. The four loops on the back means you can't lay the ipad flat on a surface, it will always be at an angle. If the receiver tabs could have been on the top cover and the straps come off the back, then at least it would lay flat. I like taking notes, and the angle and wobbling you get from having the receiving tabs on the back is quite annoying. A bad design choice. Switch them round, please....
Even with this, it is the best case I've had so far. By far. No one even close. With a couple of changes it would be the perfect case. Soften the edge, and flip the straps...
I love the case. I used it on my Ipad for several years It is just what I want and it fits my style, however, I use the IPad for work and type a lot. These cases have no integrated keyboard. I solved this with my SB case by velcroing a keyboard to the cover and propping the screen with various objects. Although it worked great, I am at a loss with the IPad Air. Please look into a keyboard model.
I've had this case for (3) years and besides being fantastic, it receives a TON of compliments. I was shocked to find out that there's no case for the iPad Air, and I'm DEEPLY saddened by that fact - so much so that I'm considering a hunger strike until one is produced! PLEASE Dave, I needs me a new case!!!!!
I have one of these cases for my iPad 3. Just got an iPad Air and while it fits in the case, the case is too big. I'm using my Air in the old case until SBL releases a new case.
Come on Dave, release a new case and make some money!
Have the old, iPad 4 case for few years. I agree with the rest of the comments that it is the best. Now, I have iPad air but no case.
I purchased a Saddleback case for my iPad 3. By far it is the best case on the market. Its ability to protect the iPad is far superior to anything else available. Waiting patiently for Dave to develop an iPad case for the iPad Air:) Come on Dave, hook us up!:)
I love my ipad case and have received lots of compliments! I am eagerly awaiting the release of the ipad air case so that I can feel "safe" using my new ipad! I really hope it will be released before Christmas!! Thanks again for an amazing product! Keep up the good work!
Hands down, THE best iPad case EVER !!!
The leather is aging awesomely.....
Wating patiently for the iPad Air case !
I have this case for my mini and absolutely love it. I just bought an IPad Air and would sincerely love to have one wrapped around it.
I have bought a few Ipad cases....all junk. I am so thrilled with this wonderful leather case and very proud when I pull it out on the airplane (I need a referral fee) because many people ask me about it. You will love the sturdiness and excellent craftsmanship...believe me!
Love your products, but desperately await the iPad Air Case!!!
I have bought the thin briefcase, mac sleeve, and bi fold wallet. Love them all!! But Dave please design one for the IPad Air!
I purchased one yesterday and I am waiting for your design before I use it. Please release it soon!!!!
My son bought mr the tobacco colored cover. I've had it for 3+ years, and I love it! It was the second best gift ever, second to my iPad which my husband surprised me with! I've had many many complements on the cover too. BTW, I carry my iPad in my purse a lot and know it is protected by the cover!!! Love Love Love it!
I have this beautiful case in chestnut for my ipad and I love it, i know it is protective and I know that it will house my ipad without any problems, I just drop this into my saddle back chestnut medium briefcase or my large saddle back tote and I am good to go. I hope Dave makes one for the Ipad air that I just ordered .
We kept coming back to this case while trying to find one for our iPads. Couldn't wait for it to arrive! I love the way it has broken in and become better with time! We enoy every compliment and question about it! Great protection and great design!! We can't wait for the iPad Air design to be released!
I recommended this to so many people when I worked at Apple!
Love this case. I have it in Chestnut. I got this originally for my iPad 2 and now my iPad 4 is loving this case. I have gotten so many compliments. I just hope it will fit the iPad Air.
I recieved this case from a good friend upon graduation from medical school. Initially I was a little underwhelmed, the leather was very fresh and rigid with no personality. However as I've been using it it has been absorbing oils from my hands and getting some wear. Now after almost a year of use I am thrilled with both the amazing protection it offers and the unique look. I have people everyday who ask me about it. Would recommend to anyone looking for a beautiful, unique cover.
I've had one iPad case in black and one in brown for a couple of years. Aside from the fact that they are indestructible, the heft is actually an advantage. The protective quality of the case is second to none on the market. Cosmetically, the brown has developed a fine patina while the black has shown great resilience in the face of abuse, showing almost no wear. I am hoping Dave will design one for the iPad Air in the immediate future.
I am writing this review after almost three years of owning and using the case made for the first generation iPads. I own the Dark Coffee Brown case and despite the age it still looks and feels new. The color hasn't faded and the corners are still stiff and strong. The case and ipad have been dropped several times, kids have planted sticky, dirty, wet hands on the case and in the most extreme case, my daughter has also generously thrown up on it. After a wipe (and occassional wash) the case still reeks of strength, durability and looks....it kind of says in it's own unique way 'bring it on...is this all you have got?'....I own several products made by Saddleback Leather and I must say that Dave has set the bar on looks, quality and durability...Can't wait to see what else he comes up with...
