"... Saddleback Leather no longer discriminates against any cow on the basis of age, appearance, lactose intolerance... if the beast has a natural marking or brand, or whether or not they worship the Divine Bovine."
Truth is, sometimes beauty is only skin deep... like with cows. Their poetry is notoriously terrible, but man, their hides are nature's art. We don't believe that flawlessness equals beauty. Beauty is when we're able to see something as it really is.
This is true with humans too. There are lots of quality people who are really beautiful not in spite of, but because of the marks life has given them.
I was driving through Wyoming one time in winter. Blue was in the passenger seat, It was 8 degrees, snow was blowing, the roads were icy. It was about 2 in the morning, and I thought because I had big mud terrain tires on my old Land Cruiser that I would be able to drive a little faster than everybody else. I was wrong.
I rolled the Land Cruiser, and when I came to my senses, I think Blue was dead. My toolbox had hit him and he was completely limp. I held him and cried out a short and loud prayer. Miraculously, Blue came back. Maybe he was just unconscious. Maybe not. Either way, I learned then and there that nature has no friends.
An hour later, my Land Cruiser was pulled upright again and I drove on. You can bend those Iron Pigs, but you can’t break ‘em. Maybe that’s where my obsession with over-engineering everything started. I like to play it safe just in case the worst happens. If you’re the kind of person who likes over-engineered things, and has a habit of testing limits, you’re going to want to have this to protect your iPhone far more than you need it to. You can bend it, but you can’t break it.
Don't be an idiot. Buy this sleeve. It is awesome. I just threw it, phone in sleeve, as hard as I could across my living room. Just to prove the point it not only looks like a dead cow rectangle, but it protects the phone. You dummies I see commenting about it doesn't protect the phone while you're texting, you are dumb. Stop texting drunk and while driving, and you'll stop dropping your phone! Its not a case, its a sleeve. You want a case, don't buy a sleeve, you no good pirate! This is legit (period). Buy two. Give one to your wife.
The iPhone 5 has some sharp, sharp edges. Edges sharp enough that they wore a little hole in the canvas pocket of my raw denim jeans. That's honestly the only reason that I bought a case. I didn't want something that'd cover the phone 100% of the time. I don't want to hide the beauty of the iPhone 5. It's well designed and I think that it should be naked when in use. That's why I went with a sleeve like this one. At the end of the day, I just wanted something to protect my pocket from the phone. And, if it also protects against me dropping it or falling on it too, well then, that's a bonus.
If you're reading this review, then you're probably looking for something simple like me. This is it. This is the case that you want. It's a tight fit, but I'm sure it'll stretch to fit wonderfully.
The leather is super high-quality (it's Saddleback, of course it is), the stitching is beautiful (again, duh). Most of all, it protects like crazy. I have no doubt that I could throw my phone across the room and have it come out no worse for the wear. I doubt that dropping it on concrete would do anything. I was skeptical of the 100 year guarantee until I saw my first Saddleback piece--now I'm guaranteeing you that Apple will have long since started using a different form factor--one that won't fit in this case--before you or your descendants find a way to wear it out.
I love this case. I just got it in today and while it is tight it gives me confidence that the phone won't fall out once I break it in some. The tobacco is gorgeous and it is already starting to get it's own character as I scuff it here and there. I love that I am now using my beautiful iPhone instead of a big plastic block that I was using when I had it in a life proof case. My case is now something that I enjoy instead of something that annoys me and I get the full joy of Apple's engineering as well. Well done saddleback.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S II, which is slightly bigger than an iPhone -- which is why I traded in my iPhone for the Samsung in the first place. Accordingly, my SB iPhone case was REALLY snug in the beginning. My co-workers were laughing at how hard a time I had to get the phone in and out, but I knew it would be worth the effort. After a couple of months now, the case is still snug, but nicely so, like a favorite pair of jeans that fit like a second-skin.
Funny story - the first night I had the SB case, I jammed my golf GPS unit down in there, thinking that would help stretch it out. The GPS got so wedged in that it actually somehow activated a calibration screen I had never seen before. My golf GPS now works better than it ever has before!
I've had my iPhone 5 case for a couple months now. I am very happy with this product.
The leather is tough and beautiful and oozes quality. As others have said, the case is very stiff upon arrival and I had a hard time fitting the phone inside at first. But it has loosened up nicely and now holds the phone securely while making it easy to slide in and out. I used the Chamberlain's Leather Milk (also sold here) on it a couple a times and it seemed to help the breaking-in process.
A couple of small complaints: The first one isn't really a complaint but the Tobacco Brown is a little lighter than I expected or wanted. However, the conditioner darkened it a little. I'm in no way dissatisfied with the case's color however. If I had to do it again, I might go with the Chestnut, as I generally like a little more red in my leather. But it still looks great and attracts a lot of admiring eyes.
The only real gripe I have is that while the phone is in the case, it's impossible to have headphones plugged in, as the earbud jack in inaccessible while the phone is in the case. I often listen to music and always use earbuds when talking on the phone. What I've taken to doing in placing the phone in the case upside down and then I can access the headphone jack. While this works fine, it would be nice to see Saddleback's next generation of iPhone cases accommodate access to the jack.
This case may not be for everyone. I am not a clumsy person and rarely drop my phone. I like holding it in its natural state without a bulky Otterbox or similar case surrounding my phone. If you are all thumbs, however, you may want to consider other protection.
The fact that I have to pull the phone out and can't look at the screen while it's in the case may not be ideal for those who check their phones every 10 seconds. For me, it's a plus. It forces me not to waste time constantly looking at my phone and pull it out only when necessary. In some ways, you could say this case has made me more productive.
In closing, this is a great case and I'm very happy with this purchase. It's my first Saddleback leather piece but won't be my last.
This is a beautifully made case for an iPhone 5. What a great smell, like a new pair of quality shoes! I got the Dark Coffee Brown.
When you get it, it's flat and you have to force the iPhone 5 into the case. After I pushed it in, I flexed the bottom and edges for a while and the case loosened up. After a day of working with it, the phone slides in and out easily, yet the fit is still snug enough that your iPhone won't fall out by accident. Highly recommended!
I bought this in Tobacco and Chestnut because I like to switch them out from time to time. The tobacco is definitely softer and more pliable, almost suede like compared to the shiny smooth finish on the Chestnut. I softened them over a few days to make them easier to work with. Great stuff.
I used a small gadget pouch for my iPhone 4 prior to upgrading to the iPhone 5 and purchased this version when it released. I am a tobacco brown guy but plan on purchasing a DCB one as well for a change of pace occasionally. The pouch does a great job protecting your phone during transit (in and out of pockets, bags, cars, etc...) but also allows you to enjoy the sleekness of the iPhone 5 during use. My case arrived "stiff" ,as expected, but has broken in very nicely. Well done Dave and team...another great addition to my Saddleback Leather collection.
I got this for my iPod Touch 5th Gen which has the same dimensions of the iPhone 5 but it's thinner. It fits great in this case and doesn't fall out even though it's thinner. The leather is thicker than the classic wallet I also got and I think it'd protect it well if I ever drop it. I can't stand typical cases that snap on the back and usually offer no real protection, I much prefer these sleeve cases that just let you throw it around without worrying about it, yet let you use the device bare the way it was meant to be held.
I bought the small gadget case for my iPhone 5 and didn't like the fit, so I contacted Saddleback and they allowed me to return it no questions asked, and gave me a gift certificate for the amount of this iPhone5 case. I absolutely love it and am glad it covers all of the edges of my iPhone 5, which was my only qualm about the small gadget case. Of course, now I wish I had kept the other case for my iPod classic, but that's my own fault.
I can't say enough good things about this company and the products they produce. I love all the pieces I own and happily tell others about your great company!
Great case- you will need to work with the leather a bit to soften it, but overall this is just a very high quality piece. I love the look, and I think the phone is very safe inside. Also, this is not the same kind of case that everybody else has, and I like that. Finally, I like to use the iPhone without a bulky case, so this offers great protection, great looks, and the ability to use the iPhone sans case. Love it!
I just received my Saddleback Leather iPhone 5 case in Tobacco Brown. I love, Love, LOVE my new case. The quality is amazing with it's super thick cut full grain niceness!! I was kind of worried that the tobacco brown might be a little too light in color for my tastes, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it seems to be a little darker than the photos I've seen. It's just right! I was also concerned about how it would fit since I have a Ghost Armor skin attached to my phone. I was kinda worried that it may peel away at the skin but, lo and behold, the case really only touches the edges (bezel) of the phone where there is no skin attached. Awesome!!
Bought this iPhone 5 case and love it. Like the other reviewers have said, great product, AND it offers protection for my phone. I have several Saddleback products and cannot say enough good things about the company. It is refreshing to see someone like Dave, who ENJOYS his business. His videos make you want to buy his products, and admire someone who enjoys life AND work. HIGHLY recommend the iPhone 5 case and Saddleback Leather.
Bought it. Love it. Tough as my otterbox (probably tougher) but I get to use the thin beautiful iphone 5 as was intended in the first place.
Top notch gear and company. Zero complaints.
I bought the older version of this case. I was so happy with its, simple design, guaranteed protection and great quality, I bought 2 more for myself and my girlfriend for our new iPhones. It also lets me use my iPhone as Apple intended. What better way to appreciate Apple's design is to use it as it is. So, this iPhone leather sleeve is more than enough to protect your loved gadgets. It also never fails to catch anyone's attention when I bring it out. http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii162/Kiddomyk/2013-02-28at23-18-22-2013-02-28at23-18-22.jpg
I have the gadget pouches in small, medium and large. All have their uses and are great to have for electronic gear. If I have one quibble, it's that you have to choose between your small gadget pouch OR something like Otterbox for your iPhone. Try as I might to stretch my small pouch just a little more (Even wedged an Altoid box in there -- so tight I had to use pliers and get help from a friend to get it out!) -- the little pouch remains just a bit too tight to fit my iPhone 4 with a Commuter Otterbox jacket on it. Why do I need both? Well, the Otterbox makes the phone easier to hold and makes me feel secure if I should drop it while holding it. But the Sadleback pouch is great looking, and also protects the screen from scratches while it's in my purse. I so, so wish I could make the pouch work with the Otterbox case. Anybody know whether wetting the leather would help it stretch, or would it shrink more?
I have just brought a new iPhone 5 in white and have a wooden Element Ronin Case around it. The reason why I mention the Element Case is because customers might think if they have an outer case on their phone, it might not fit inside. At the advice of customer service, I worked it with my hands a bit (because it was stiff as expected) and left the iPhone in it overnight to stretch it, it worked. The warm brown color of the Tobacco Brown compliments my white phone and wooden / nickel case just lovely. This case has everything. It is stylish, has a rich color, smooth feel, and is very durable. The pigskin lining really protects my phone. Living here in New York, "labels" are everything....unfortunately, I fell for that too at one point. I have gone through Kate Spade, Coach, and other designer accessories. They just didn't hold up. This case is so well built. I already have my Mother's Day gift wish picked out...the iPad case in Tobacco Brown :-). Thank you Dave and Saddleback.
I don't know if I'm putting the phone in the case incorrectly or if the leather needs to stretch out or what, but I've had a ton of trouble getting my phone in and out of the case, and getting the case to cover the entire phone. The leather quality is amazing like every other Saddleback Leather product and I expect with conditioning and time the case will become a little less stiff. Great product, tough case, easy to charge the phone while in the case.
This is such an amazing product. The leather is top quality, the build/stitching is awesome. It is very durable, very protective. I love the way my iphone slides in and out, while still being snug inside. I love it, would recommend to anyone who is on the fence about getting one.
The iPhone 5 Case is awesome. I'm using it for my iPhone 4 for now anticipating that I'll upgrade my phone soon. The quality is second to none, and that's considering mine is a 25% off Dave's Deal. Bottom line, it protects the phone, it is very durable, and I have no doubt that it will last a long time and get better with age. Pick one up.
Just revived the case in the mail and was very impressed with the quality and style of a simple case for my phone. It was a Dave's Deal but I can't find any flaws so it is a great deal! I also bought an IPad case to test the waters with their products and let me tell you I plan on making a few purchases in the near future.
Just as the headline states, this case is a must for any Apple lover & leather lover. My wife's mom has this in the tobacco brown, and I wasn't too impressed at first. I have a small (5 minute) commute to work, so I didn't think I needed something like this. I found a "minimalist" snap-on case for my iPhone and thought that to be sufficient. I thought wrong.
The more I looked at and played with the case, the more I wanted one. I was perusing Dave's Deals yesterday and found this one in the Dark Coffee Brown. I decided to pick it up and absolutely cannot wait for it to arrive. I have the medium gadget sleeve in the DCB as well, and now that it is breaking in and acquiring some scuff and scrapes, it is looking better and better!
I fully intend on purchasing MUCH more of SBL's products. My collection will be in the DCB simply because of the rich color and professional look to it all.
I see a large DCB Round Satchel in my near future...among other things!
Just a few observations after a couple months of use. Overall a great case when more bulky protection is not likely required.
As most everyone will agree, the quality and workmanship are first rate (even on the deals).
As far as protection goes, the case does a great job depending on your use and environment.
If you use the phone in a dusty, possibly wet, or with the distinct possibility of high impact, then this may not be the ideal case for those situations. Otterbox and others make great cases for those applications. Those cases are not as elegant or tactilely pleasing.
For "normal" everyday use, this case can't be beat. The phone slips in and out, there is no degradation of sound quality, and charging is easy using most any aftermarket charger. You can keep it in your pocket, purse or bag and not worry about the phone being scratched, dinged, or screen cracked.
I've not tested the drop capability of this sleeve and hope I never do. Realistically the phone will probably be in your hand, naked as the day you opened the box, should you ever drop it.
I do enjoy this case and use it most of the time. When there is a high probability of more adverse then normal conditions, I use a case from another manufacturer. No one said you can't have more then one case, or color of leather.
Hope this helps you decide.
This is a great phone case. I own it in three colors and use it constantly. First rate materials and workmanship. It fits in all pockets and protects the phone on sweaty, high Texas heat days without any problem. It leaves the phone to be enjoyed as it was meant to be, unencumbered by continuous cloaking. I own several Saddleback pieces and, so far, this is my favorite.
