I bought this cover to use on my medium Leuchturm1917 as I was advised the moleskine cover would not fit as it as well. I picked the Tobacco Brown color as I have previously owned and still use a Tobacco ID wallet from ~2013. I also own a 2012ish Dark Coffee Brown Classic Briefcase - Large with the dark pigskin that I take everywhere. One thing I have noticed from the Saddleback community is a lot of resistance to change when it comes to El Presidente changing the tanning processes or materials that go into products. I will say that I absolutely do not feel cheated or short-handed getting this current (June 2016) bible cover. The new logo is on the inside flap, letting the product speak for itself. On the opposite side flap is the logo of Blue. No pigskin lining, but it is not needed for this particular product and would add unnecessary bulk. Stitching was over-machined as usual (in a good way) and straight out of the mail it is stiff but supple to the touch. The only slight worry I have with this cover is the leather closure - I see it wearing out before the 100 years are up, but it would be an easy fix if that were to happen. I may suggest possibly integrating some of the mountainback canvas as an optional closure, I think that would hold up better if waxed and made to match the colors of the leather. Feel free to send a prototype one in Dave ;) haha.
I got this for my Baptist Preacher friend. He and I both grew up on Indiana Jones so I joked with him that if his Bible won't fit it, he can put a "larger" small pad in there and be like Professor Jones.
He loves it and his Cross bookmark (both bought here).
I love how amazing your customer service is. Wish all websites were like this... and did not sell any leather products so you would have no competition. ;)
Thanks again for your great website.
Awesome quality can't wait for it to break in and lossen up. For $49 it's more than worth the money!!
I recently made my first purchase with Saddleback Leather. I bought the bible case to use for taking to church. For studying I primarily use a Thompson Chain Bible. I am very disappointed that they do not have a case for a larger study bible. I also was disappointed of the need to cut the bible I purchased to make it fit; however Dave warned of this so I was prepared to. The Bible cover is gorgeous! My wife suggested I opt for the chestnut color and I don't think I could be happier! The leather is very sumptuous and smells amazing! The case looks like it will hold up to many years of use and get more beautiful with age. I purchased a Zondervan KJV reference bible. Besides having to cut the covers it works wonderfully. I would highly recommend this bible case to anyone needing one!
This is my second SBL bible cover order. The first, in tobacco, made an incredible impression as a medium moleskine cover gift. The second, in dark coffee brown, is a perfect cover for a Leuchtturm1917 notebook which fills it out a little better. It takes a second for the leather to break-in a bit and cover the notebook perfectly. This cover is an excellent gift of heirloom quality that will last many notebooks and beyond.
A note on finishes: the tobacco will patina faster and develop more dramatic character, while the dark coffee brown leather will look more uniform for longer. Both feel and smell great (although the tobacco has a slightly better aroma ;)
The Saddleback bug bit me quickly! I spent nearly $2000 in 2 weeks time on different items, and this is my favorite! I use it as a journal cover, NOT a bible cover. It does fit a Moleskine after a little bit of work on the leather. I do have a few journals so I also bought the "Moleskine Cover" and I do like this a lot more. I enjoy the closure on it. I also love the simplicity and not having the pig skin lining. This allowed me to beat it up like an old baseball glove. I used Chamberlain's, I wrapped it tightly, stretched it, got it wet, took a high pressured steamer to it, twisted it, threw it and beat it on every hard surface I could find. After 1 week of this horrid abuse, it looks and feels amazing! If you are comparing this with the moleskine cover, I highly recomend this instead.
This product is outstanding. It is just what you would expect from Saddleback Leather in terms of quality of construction. The only issue that I have with it is that it should be about 1.5-2" wider so that it fits most of the medium sized Bibles available at Christian bookstores such as Life Way. I had to trim my Bible's cover so that it would fit, which is not ideal since it is marketed as a Bible cover. Otherwise it is a great product.
I have an adorable, rescued mini-dachshund who decided one day to see if the word of God really was meat for the soul. I caught her chewing on my Bible! The pages escaped mostly unharmed, but the back cover was missing a large section at the top. I didn't want to dispose of this Bible so I came to SBL to check out the leather Bible cover. The cover is great! It is very thick leather that will withstand years of use and travel. It is beautiful. My Bible is small so the cover is quite a bit taller than the book, but the width is perfect. The book is now protected and looks great.
I bought the cover in dark coffee brown and have been using it for a few months now. I carry my bible in my bag with me just about everywhere and have no concerns about it getting beat up--in fact I wish it would get some "personality" even faster!
I found that for it to fit my bible I had to trim about a quarter inch off the front edges of the bible's cover, but no big deal. You can tell if you need to do this because it won't quite close with the bible in the cover, but it looks like it should fit.
I'd love to see this in more sizes to fit more bibles. I have a very thick study bible that I'd love to have in a cover as well.
LOVE my new Tobacco Bible Cover! After a couple of days of gradually stretching the leather, I was able to fit my cloth hardcover copy of the ESV Reader's Bible into it. Now this Bible is beautifully protected when it's packed in my bag, and fastening the leather clasp keeps it closed and the pages from getting smashed. Both the feel and the smell of the leather are fantastic. Would love it if there was a larger size available too!
I really like the high quality leather, the color and even that wonderful leather smell. As a pastor (www.flbconline.com) I wanted something that was beautiful and would last. I do love it and have been fascinated by the story Saddleback Leather and the craftsmanship for a long time. This was my first purchase and I am thrilled! I do have to say that the measurements is really weird, I had to go to my local Christian bookstore and still couldn't find a Bible to fit right. I finally just had to go with a less expensive King Jimmy and just cut the cover to make it fit. I sure hate to have done that, but it was the only way. Outside of that, I am very happy with it.
This is an absolutely beautiful product!! I've bought two of these over the last few years; one in the dark brown, and the other as a gift in tobacco brown. I don't read the Bible but I do use this as a journal cover for work and it's quality is unparalleled. I get lots of compliments and the dark brown leather has broken in very nicely.
The second cover was a gift new my friends son, and I did include a Bible in that one. I have to say, I was a little jealous when I saw how cool that tobacco brown looks, but I was way more excited to give him a gift he will enjoy for the rest of his life.
I have enjoyed several products from Saddleback Leather, and I have never been disappointed. Great company!
No way I'll ever wear it out. The simple leather tie closure works very well, and can be done one -handed with practice. The only possible issue is the leather looks so nice, I feel self-conscious taking it out when people are around. I guess it needs to get a little beat-up. That might help.
Of course, it should fit a good number of small to medium size books also. In book-lingo, a small octavo, roughly speaking. Measuring is probably a good idea if you have a particular book in mind.
This cover, it seems, was designed for one Bible and one Bible only. I bought one of these and took it to two book stores and two Christian book stores. I could not find a Bible that would fit. They say one will. It's listed on this page. Cutting the original cover to fit this seems counterproductive. It seems to me that if they had made it 1/2" wider it would fit 98% of the Bibles it was designated to cover. Not the .9% that it does fit without modifying.
I am super happy to inform that my bible cover fits amazing on my bible.i took it to Walmart to find a bible that fit just perfect.Ill be honest I wasn't sure if there was one but actually there where several.I had to cut a quarter inch on each side of the hard cover but it looks real good. The only thing I am worried is that my brothers will covet for it.Super great product. The word of God doesn't deserve any less.
I brought the cover to my local christian book store -- the first question, "...from where did you purchase THAT?" The leather is absolutely beautiful. While I will use for my bible, it will also accommodate a Kindle and Vela Series-N2 5.5 x 8.5 inch Field Research Notebook. This is my third Saddleback purchase (wallet and clutch purse). My sons have added the Saddleback briefcase to their wish lists. I suspect the Tumi and Zero Halliburton cases will be donated to good will.
Just a quick note for anyone wondering what Bible fits. Like other reviews, I found the Crossway thin line Bible fits but my eyes are fuzzy enough that the smaller font was a bit challenging. The personal size large font Bible was too thick. And then today... I received the single column heritage Bible with 9pt font. Perfect for me and fits in the Saddleback cover without trimming.
I got the chestnut bible cover, and I couldn't be more thrilled!!!!! Sure I had to trim front and back cover, yet its still a bit of a squeeze, but it works. I love this. I love the color the smell and the concept. I cant wait to see what it looks like when it turns a different color from use and age. I will cherish this. Thanks Saddleback Leather Company, for providing such a wonderful thing to keep my bible in :)
This is my third Saddleback leather purchase, and once again their fantastic quality leather amazed me again. Upon receiving this bible cover (in the tobacco color), I was pleasantly surprised by the beauty and simplicity of it. It actually looks even better in person! As for the sizing, which I was worried about, here's my advice I purchased an ESV thinline bible (by Crossway) and to my dismay, it was about a quarter inch too long on each side. SO, after some contemplating I decided to take Dave's advice, and simply cut the bible's cover down to size. This worked just fine, however, the perfectionist in me kept saying that I could do better. I went back to bible searching and decided to go to my local Christian bookstore and try them out in person along with my new cover. Here were the results: the only bibles that fit nicely right out of packaging were the NASB thinline bible by Zondervan (which is what I got), and the ESV ultra thinline GIFT bible by Crossway. Only the gift version fit, and even still it was pushing it. The regular ultra thinline and normal thinline (for ESV) DO NOT fit without some modification. In conclusion, be warned that your bible selection is quite limited if you wish not to modify anything. However, despite this I give this case 5/5 for its beauty and great craftsmanship. Also note that none of the thinline HCSB or NIV bibles that I looked at were able to fit as well. TO DAVE: Please make a large version for study sized bibles!!! You'd be guaranteed at least a few customers just from my family alone. :)
I ordered 2 bible covers for Christmas gifts and was very excited to give such beautiful presents. I originally wanted the chestnut color, but only the tobacco was in stock at the time. I thought the color would look too masculine for my sisters, but they ended up being perfect. Not masculine and not feminine, just nice leather. The bible covers are gorgeous and are very well made. The leather is thick and soft and will definitely last a long, long time. The toggle closure is just the perfect finishing touch.
I think my sisters liked getting their covers as much as I liked giving them. They kept rubbing their hands over the leather and opening it to look at the bible (which somehow looked much nicer in the cover).
As for the bible size, a thin line (regular, not large print) bible fits perfectly. When I first put the bible in the cover, it seemed too tight. I worked the leather back and forth a couple times, and the bible covers slid right into place.
As a side note, Saddleback's customer service is super. I called for some information and they were very friendly and helpful. I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience.
As an atheist, I don’t believe in the Bible, but I believe in tangible things like leather, so I took a leap of faith and purchased one of these with the hope of finding something to wrap it in. After receiving it, I did some measurements and found a notebook that fits 'nearly' perfectly inside of it (Vela Series-N2 5.5 x 8.5 inch Field Research Notebook). Unlike other reviewers have noted, I found the Moleskines fit too loosely for my taste.
When I say ‘nearly’, this is in reference to the stage when the leather is brand new and hasn’t experienced the full cowhide afterlife to stretch and morph for my human use and consumption. I was a bit disheartened upon receiving my notebook that it was just a bit too snug of a fit, but my unwillingness to accept this observation as dogma made me press on, stubbornly refusing to let the notebook or the Bible cover defeat me.
After a mere few weeks, the cover closes very snugly onto the notebook and I envisage another month or two will really allow them to marry. The cover itself is very simple, albeit high quality. The notebook itself is nothing to write home about, but wrap it in this Bible cover and it gives it a life of its own, prompting me to write in it, open it, refer to it and bookmark it.
Can't say enough good about this cover. Easy to "set up" and very durable. I have had this two years and absolutely love it.
I'm using the Bible cover for my iPad Mini. Currently, it's covering an iPad mini and a Logitech mini keyboard. The two fit perfectly and this cover is simply awesome. It covers both with ease and the symmetry is perfect. You can also store both the iPad mini and keyboard in a single sleeve and leave the other open for a notepad but that seems to make the whole thing look a bit lumpy.
For those without a keyboard for their iPad Mini, I'd recommend using one of the sleeves to house a notepad - perhaps a Moleskine that sports a soft cover (they do make those!).
I bought the cover with the closure. The dangling closure straps adds a bit of bulk to the whole thing but there's a cool factor that simply must be seen to behold. Some may call it a "guy" look but I don't entirely agree - it works for women, too. Heck, if I saw a woman with this exact case, I'd think she's pretty cool :-)
Is it expensive? Yeah. But you pay for quality and this really does seem to be built to last. I seriously can't wait for it get worn in. In fact, I put some scratches on it simply taking it out of it's plastic shipping bag - and the great part is that it became MINE from that point!
If you carry an iPad with you everywhere, carry it in the Saddleback Bible cover. You will not regret it.
A friend of mine gave this to me in the tobacco color and I must say, it's a beautiful cover. It holds my copy of the Qu'ran perfectly and it makes this beautiful book a little more beautiful. I have their medium bifold wallet in tobacco as well and it just looks better the longer I have it. Saddleback fan for life!
The website does not in any way convey how beautiful these covers really are. I thought they were nice, no - they are beyond nice and feel as if they are from another time, as if you just found something your great great grandfather left behind. I ordered the non-closure version in dark coffee brown to use with my moleskine notebook. It fits the 5 x 8.25 inch moleskine PERFECTLY. The inside of these is not pigskin lined but that's actually an unintended plus since the result is that you can actually see the beauty of the unfinished leather when you open it. When writing in your notebook it feels as if you've time travelled back to the 1800's as your notebook pages are surrounded by the unfinished leather, the stitching and the soft inner covers. It truly makes journaling or taking notes such a pleasure. These beauties are SOFT and FLOPPY and absolutely gorgeous. With the 5 x 8.25 inch moleskine you have about 1 to 1.5 cm of extra material above and below the notebook but I've been carrying it in my briefcase for a while now and that doesn't crease or fold over, don't worry it actually looks and feels like it was made for it. The only other drawback is that you can't use the elastic band of the moleskine (I just tuck mine into the cover) but you won't miss it. The added benefit is that you can use it to keep your ipad mini as well, it fits great. As for whether to go with the closure or not.... honestly, I don't think you need the closure 1- for me it just looked like it added bulk and would make it awkward to stack your notebook 2 - I tried that closure on the pouch and didn't like it at all, I wasn't going to have it on my notebooks. In the end it's your call though, you can't go wrong with getting one of these. I actually loved my dark coffee brown version so much that I splurged and purchased it in the other 3 colors to rotate through! Enjoy this purchase, you won't regret it.
