Look, the case is leather. I didn't want a hard plastic case that felt bad even it is quality plastic- I wanted something that looked, felt, and even smells like quality. . That is why I bought leather. I also wanted something that lasts which is why we buy Saddleback.
It's a great protector so bulk is by design. Some people say it is also somewhat heavy. . . again by design and it doesn't bother me.
Ipad does slide ever so slightly inside the case. Leather is a natural material so it will not be a 100% snug fig- it will be a 90% snug fit.
You have to hold the ipad in place when plugging it in, not a huge ordeal. The Camera lens may also be covered by the hole and you have to slide the ipad before taking a picture. I don't use my ipad camera so I never notice this problem.
My only recommendation is the leather handle on the back- I don't like it and don't use it. In fact, I would rather have a place to hold business cards and am curious if there is a recommended way to glue one side of the handle to create a small pouch?
That's it. I would recommend this and when I eventually upgrade to a newer ipad, I will buy an updated case from Saddleback as well.
I've been using the iPad since it was first released, and I've had many cases and covers from different companies. Prior to this one, I was using an SLC gadget sleeve, which was nice, but I realized quickly I missed the ability to stand the iPad up or have it propped up for reading. I purchased an iPad Air case, and wow, I love this thing! Not only does it look great, the straps are stiff enough to support the iPad in all positions. I can tuck my stylus in the straps as I cinch them tight and it won't fall out. The iPad is well protected on all sides. It's thicker than any other case I've tried, but that's not a bad thing. It's not bulky - it's more substantial feeling. The leather gives you a good grip, so you don't feel like it's going to slip from your fingers as do some of the plastic cases. All in all, very pleased.
I really like this case. I've had it for over a year (I think) and I use it whenever I don't anticipate needing a keyboard. Only thing I'd caution is that the two straps have some sort of plastic or nylon insert in them. I found that out when I was absent mindedly fiddling with the straps while working and broke one in half. The other strap broke in half in the normal course of use (by broke in half, I mean the plastic piece on the inside broke, the leather is still in tact). The functionality isn't greatly diminished, but it does somewhat hamper the ability to prop the iPad up. I was mostly confused because I was under the impression that Saddleback's products only contained leather, stitching, and metal fasteners.
After buying a backpack and just falling in love with it. I take it with me everywhere. I wanted a case for my iPad. Now I have an iPad Air 2 but the case is a perfect fit. The cover of course wasn't meant for the iPad Air 2, so the back camera is unusable but I don't care. I take all pictures with my iPhone so that fact is meaningless to me. I love the tobacco leather and it is beautiful. I'm sure it will age gracefully into a rich saddle brown over time. Everyone who sees my backpack and is envious will now have something else to be jealous about. I just love the leather products from this company and I'm planning on getting a bunch of Christmas gifts for my family from Saddleback this year. You can't go wrong, buy it now, enjoy it for life.
I have used this case for about six months. First the good: As you already know it's built well. The leather is wonderful and the case is well made. The system of folding the straps over to stand up the case makes for a really sturdy set-up.
Now the bad: For me it's too much case. The iPad Air is so thin that this doubles the bulk of the device. I also use my iPad to teach from so I walk around with it a lot while talking. There is no way to tuck away the straps when you do this so they just flop around. For these reasons I went back to another case.
I purchased this for my iPad Air 2, even though it's made for the Air 1. Everything fits, except the camera hole on the back of the case (the rear camera lens was moved on the Air 2). Saddleback told me this ahead of time, but I liked this case so much when I had it on my iPad Mini that I decided to buy it anyway. Saddleback is releasing a case made specifically for the iPad Air 2 in the near future, and since their products tend to have great resale value, I plan on selling this one when the new case is released.
On my Third case, first one was pretty messed up iPad didn't fit, device slid loosely. The next two seemed to have defects, When laid on flat surface it tilts to one side no matter what adjustment I make to the straps. I truly appreciate the returns and attempts to make me happy but someone at quality control is falling asleep at the wheel. Leather is gorgeous color is gorgeous. Wears well. When closed looks magnificent. When open and trying to hold to view......well it's not even.
I only gave it a three for quality of leather it is a very nice case.
However I do agree it don't fit well and you have to put your fingers under leather to plug it in, to put lock screen on, seems too big of case don't fit well.
Hate how the strap is in back of the case not the front so when you open it and wanna read it like a book it's awkward to hold.
Standing to type or watch movie is great cause of the "stiffness" of leather.
I have 5 other items in chestnut purses wallets clutch and this first item I just don't like how it works.
But like I said very nice leather of course as expected.
But what's the point of a air if your gonna have a huge case on it that makes it gigantic.
may go for the sleeve next see if I like that better.
trying to love this case, but haven't been able to do so.....iPad slides in the case, makes the corners inoperable to touch unless I move the iPad. Seems the strap to tighten, just doesn't tighten. As its gotten older, its gotten worse. Called the company but got little assistance. Disappointed in this product.
Exceptional, just plain exceptional!
Without a doubt this case far exceeds my expectations, and with super fast delivery!
Excellent fit and finish.
"I'll be Back"
After looking for "great iPad Air Cases" on Google I found my way to Saddleback and I ordered this case on a whim on the 30th of December 2014. Seeing as I live in Austria, Europe I chose the cheapest shipping method with UPS. I got my iPad Air Case today and it wildly exceeds my expectations: the case in Chestnut is beautiful, it is built for easy use I mean it is very practical. All I can say is WOW and I hope I am the only person in Austria with one.
I've just received this case from Amazon. As soon as I opened the box I was transfixed by the smell. I could tell immediately the quality of this case. It works perfectly, is protective (I'm clumsy so I already figured that out), and most of all beautiful. The only reason I docked a star was because a portion of the screen is blocked by leather no matter how I adjust the case. Hopefully the leather will stretch and it won't be a problem in the future. Over all, a great product.
A friend of mine bought one of these for his iPad a few years ago. And I thought after seeing his, what a great excuse to by an iPad too! Took me awhile but now I have an iPad air, and have had my saddleback for about 6 weeks now. Loving it!
True the big black dot doesn't fit square in the hole. But the tiny black dot to the right does. So I'm thinking that's actually the lense. Not problems with the camera taking photos. Not sure what the hole is for in the middle? Tobacco YES!
Love it love it love it.
My husband and I both had iPad cases from Saddleback leather for 3 years now, and we loved them. I ordered new iPad airs and received them on Tuesday, but didn't even take them out of the box till Friday because I was waiting for our new iPad air cases to arrive so they could go straight into them and I wouldn't have to worry about them.
Not the case.
Mine, which is tobacco leather, didnt even come close to fitting. I could barely get my new iPad in the case and when I did the hole for the camera doesn't even line up at all, not even close. I can't take a picture, i'd have to take it out every time. The quality is nothing like the original ones we had. The case is way too big in the fact that i can't even reach the power button and I have no idea how my iPad could be as safe as it was in the original because the sides are all exposed.
My husbands only covers 1/2 the camera, so he could take 1/2 a picture. But when he closes his, it doesn't close square, its way crooked.
Also on both cases there is an unnecessary hole in the middle on the back that just looks defective, and makes the whole thing look cheap.
I was a HUGE fan of saddleback leather and I have purchased several things from them, not to mention told all my friends to get the iPad case (original one)
I am so disappointed in this case. So upset with Saddleback. I really thought they took pride in their craftsmanship and quality. Not anymore. I guess thats what happens when you get to big, you compromise.
The quality is amazing. You won't find leather like this done so well anywhere else. I bought this for my IPad Air 2 and it fits perfectly. Since I put it on, I have been addicted to picking it up and using it more. Incredible product, incredible company. Will certainly be back for more. Thanks Dave!
Just got my ipad air case for my new ipad air 2 and it seems to fit just fine the only thing i can see wrong is on the back the hole doesnt fit it just right but i think it will still work other then that its a great case love it. it feels great looks great and smells great.lol..love that leather smell. i would for sure recommend this case for any ipad air user and as always saddle back is the place to shop love this store..great leather!
Let me start by saying I love this case. I ordered it in tobacco. The first 2 that I recieved had some alignment issues. As far as I can tell the issue is with the 2 bottom pieces that hold the iPad in place. Which cases the misalignment with the camera. I noticed that the thickness of the 2 pieces was causing the issue. These pieces seem to be a bunch of smaller pieces that make up the "padding".
I've had my current case for about 2 weeks and it is aging nicely. The Tabacco is very light but darkens naturally with use. My wallet which is 4 years old has changed colors dramatically it's much closer too the Coffee brown. But not as dark. With age it has changed to a shiny brown. Adn the texture of the leather changes with use. It changed form being able to feel a sort of slightly hairy texture to a smooth soft finish.
Saddle backs customer services is great. Very friendly and helpful. It did take a few weeks to get the whole thing sorted out, which was annoying but I didn't mind too much since I know I'll keep this case for many years too come.
I noticed that a medium sized note pad fits nicely and the bottom portion of the case holds the pages in nicely and the "rope" holds the pad in place.
I own 3 belts in Tabacco, Coffee, Carbon
Medium wallet in Tabacco
Business card holder in Tabacco
Wrist strap in Carbon
I came across this site by accident but once i saw the iPad Air case i knew i had to get one but after reading the reviews i thought it might be best to see if i can find something similar down here in Australia but i could not find anything that looked as good as Saddlebacks so i pulled the trigger and i am so glad i did it is a 10/10 everything about it is spot on, the fit is perfect the look stunning and the feel is warm and reassuring
Customer care/service is spot on and shipping took just over a week. Thx to the crew at Saddleback our paths will cross again once i have saved up to buy some travel luggage.
Superb Quality and delightfully scented! I love the smell of leather when I wake up in the morning and I roll over to read the news, facebook, emails, and my eBay account. However, that being said...it slips in and around the case. Sometimes, I have to adjust it for the sake of using the camera. Also, it is difficult to access the sound switch on the right side. Those things are pretty annoying.
I own several Saddleback products and love them all. I was debating long and hard over whether to purchase an iPad mini or an iPad Air. I purchased the Air because I wanted the Saddleback Air case. Whatever works, right! :^). My wife has the mini and that case is great.......but this one is better.
I find the case to be nearly perfect, comparing it with every other case on the market of every type. A couple of negative reviews have me scratching my head. The camera lines up just fine, as well as all other buttons. The charge station too inconvenient?????? I'd love to see a demonstration of that, cause mine works just fine. Finally, the one design feature that I expected not to like, the extra leather string to secure the top. I looped it through, then brought it back through, cinched it, and it rests on top of my iPad out of sight. I'd post a picture if I knew how.
Great work guys! On to my next purchase....
I am one of those people who is a somewhat harsh (but fair) critic on products in general and if you’re like me I’d say there is a pretty good chance you’re going to like this case.
I got the Saddleback iPad Air case a couple of weeks ago and here’s the executive summary: thumbs up.
I had started out with a Bear Motion case when I got the iPad and that’s a pretty nice case, however, being a Saddleback aficionado from way back I’ve always had my eye on the Saddleback case. I should have known it would just be a matter of time before I broke down and ordered one.
Some details: If you’re a Saddleback customer you already know about the high quality full grain boot leather that Saddleback uses for its products. If you’re new to the line, than you’re in for a treat when you get your first Saddleback product.
I have no doubt that this case will far outlast the iPad Air. The new iPad cases have the new pigskin lining which is a bit different than the older Saddleback products you may have already purchased. The older pigskin, for example - what lines my Saddleback Messenger bag, is a much harder pigskin than what lines the iPad Air case. The new pigskin lining is much softer and doesn’t have the shine to it that the older pigskin has. Looking at in detail it seems to be the same thickness and quality. I like it - at least for the iPad case. It’s also much lighter in color than the older pigskin which is a dark chocolate color on my Messenger bag (most of my Saddleback items are Dark Coffee Brown, by the way). So the new pigskin color is kind of a caramel which really looks great.
I conditioned my iPad case immediately after getting it as I have with all my Saddleback products - I use Lexol and when I condition my products I put a lot of elbow grease into it and really work it into the leather (using my fingers) which softens it up after a few applications. Using the Lexol on the pigskin has turned it a darker color which personally I like but be forewarned that the darkening appears permanent.
I’ve always been a prolific reader and that’s what I’m primarily using the iPad for. I’ve heard some argue against going the eBook route as they say there is nothing like cracking open a good book and getting the feel of the pages and the smell of the book bindings and glues and paper and I certainly can relate to that but with this case you get that incredible heady aroma of Saddleback’s boot leather and if that isn’t more than an acceptable substitute than I don’t know what is.
I’ve only got one very minor aesthetic complaint (more an observation than a complaint) and that is the camera hole is slightly off center but this does not affect functionality of the camera at all. In fact, the fit of the iPad into the case is snug and tight.
I had reservations about how the iPad was secured into the case which is by using the thin leather strap and tying it off after being fed through a hole on the opposite side - it’s what put me off to buying this in the first place but it’s a complete non-issue and I actually have come to like it. It just adds one more bit of that old timey feel to the case and I have zero worries that the iPad will ever come sailing out of the case - even without using the strap - the fit is that tight and secure.
I’ve read people make comments about weight and quite frankly, it’s not an issue - at least for me. Yeah, it’s heavier than my old Bear Motion case but has this impacted me using it - no. The handy leather piece inside the case allows you to slide your hand (or a few fingers) into it which makes wielding the case quite natural. Also, the way the straps slide back into the case allows for multiple positions to change the angle of the way the case sits if you’re using it on a table and I’ve found those positions to be ideal.
All in all this case has turned the ultimate gadget into an art piece of yesteryear. It’s as if the case acts as a bridge between the epitome of high tech wizardry coupled with the comfort, quality and feel of something you’d find in a tack shop in El Paso if you stepped out of a time machine in the late 1800s.
This is the latest addition to my Saddleback collection which includes the Messenger bag, two tow belts (dark coffee and black), belt pouch, leather pouch, Moleskine cover and two wallets which I have been 100 percent happy with. As mentioned earlier, I’m partial to dark coffee brown insofar as color goes - and dark coffee in general insofar as beverages go.
I hope this review helps you make a decision on whether this case is right for you.
Cheers with warm regards…
After reading reviews I was hesitant. Saddleback has a legendary reputation for quality, yet many reviews of this product consistently stated the same problems.
1. The holes cut out of leather for camera lens didn't align.
2. The retaining strap actually holding the iPad in the case was a bad design.
Because of Saddleback's reputation I took the risk. Glad I did.
Leather was awesome.
Design fit the iPad Air perfectly.
Looks amazing. True class.
Amazed at how well thought out the "protection" aspect of this case was in the end. It's an incredibly well done design should you drop it.
One review said the leather string holding the iPad in place seemed like an "afterthought" in design. I agree. It's the sole reason I almost didn't purchase this case after watching the video description. That's why I give it 4 stars not 5.
It's worth it. I'd buy it again.
I'm an author and speaker, and my audience is strictly men. So, class and style matter. If Hemingway used an iPad ... this would be his case of choice.
My first Saddleback product was the iPad 2 case. Since then, I've bought a wallet, a MacBook case, iPhone 5 Gadget Sleeve and a Satchel. Needless to say, I'm a fan. The new iPad Air case is spot on. The new reinforced straps make landscape mode great and the uncovered sides don't hinder iPad use at all. I like the strap to hold the iPad in place, it's secure as it can be. Beautiful color (Dark Brown), stitching and craftsmanship. Thanks for your attention to detail and high quality products!
Having bought my last 2 iPad cases from this company when i upgraded to the iPad air i came right back to buy another from them as i was very happy with the previous ones. The case arrived 2 days ago and i must say i am very disappointed in it. The quality of the last 2 i had purchased is not there anymore. The stitching is not aligned right, the lining looks cheap compared to my others.
