I searched through many sites for an iPad mini case - I like the smell and feel of real leather and after reading the reviews on this site decided to try it out. I chose the Dark Coffee Brown and was nervous when I read the darker colors may be stiffer leather. It shipped the same day as ordered (although took UPS over 7 days to deliver it). The case is beautiful. The workmanship is excellent (especially the stitching around the rounded corners and cutouts) as is the leather quality. The case is unique and stands out in a very elegant understated way. I would not hesitate to order from this company again or to recommend it to others. I am glad I came across the link.
This was my first purchase from SBL and it will not be my last. I looked at the website for at least two months debating if I should buy and if the products were really that good. I decided to start out with the iPad mini case. I love this thing. It feels great in your hands and every time you pick it up you get the leather smell. As far as the problem some people are having using buttons on the outer edges just make sure your iPad is pushed in as far as it will go. I have had my iPad cover for 3 weeks and don't have this problem any more. It does need time to stretch a little bit. I got the tobacco brown and it it starting to get little scratchs on it and I love the way it looks! I will be getting the laptop bag and the leather pad holder next.
I just purchased the iPad mini 4 and debated whether to go with this case or the retina version. After closely comparing the holes in the case and the buttons of the iPad, I ordered this case. I received the case today and put in my iPad and it's perfect! The buttons, camera and headphone jack locations all match. It is a bit tight to fit into the case but I'm sure that's because the leather has not been broken in. I would definitely recommend it for the iPad 4 mini.
In May of this year I purchased the iPad Mini Case in the Tobacco leather color. The first thing I noticed was the wonderful smell of leather and the craftsmanship. The case is well designed and the leather strap is a great feature that lets the case stand up (great for watching movies) or lay down at an angle. I mostly use the sleeve on the inside to hold a microfiber cloth to clean the screen on my iPad. The case fits my mini iPad fairly snug on the sides and occasionally slides up about an eighth of an inch. When this happens it blocks the outer edges of the screen so I just push back down. This is minor annoyance as I consider it a trade-off for the amount of protection that the case provides. The leather case absorbs the shock for being dropped very well. On a couple of occasions I have dropped the iPad from waist height without any damage to the iPad. The leather darkened after rubbing it with Chamberlin's Water Protectant #3 and has not returned to the original hue. I have a bible cover in the “old” Tobacco leather color and I tend to like that hue better however; the leather on this case has developed a nice patina from daily use.
I bought the iPad Mini case a while back and really like it. I bought the Tobacco Brown and it is beautiful. However, as some have noted the case is not a perfect fit around the screen. I managed to trim off the inner stitching area with an X-acto knife and a leather edging tool. The result is that all of the Mini's screen is now accessible and there still remains plenty of leather for structural integrity of the case. It took a bit of doing so as to not mess up the inner lining but with proper planning and care it can be done. You need a thick piece of scrap leather, an x-acto knife and a leather edging tool. Just make sure the scrap leather is under the place you are trimming in order to protect the lining. Be careful not to trim too much and take your time. Once the trimming is completed, use the edging tool to give your work a more finished look. If done correctly, you will now have all of the screen visible and touchable.
This case is really gorgeous. It is very simple and plain and stunning to look at. We got a new iPad Mini and my husband said he would buy the case and started to say what he thought we should have, but I said we would have this one and let him choose the colour - which is Dark Coffee Brown! We both love it. The way the strap creates a stand is really functional from the first minute, even when it is stiff and new. I am sure the leather will soften and age beautifully but it is perfect straight out of its packaging. And the smell .... to die for!
I have to agree. I got a case for 25% off from Dave's Deals. The only issue I saw were a couple of very small "stains". Though it may have been enough to stop me from giving it away as a gift, these same stains look like ones I would have put on within a couple of weeks anyway. I saw nothing else "wrong" with it from a construction standpoint.
The fit is kind of snug, I am expecting it to stretch over time and once I treat it to soften the leather.
I got the iPad mini case in Tobacco color. It was my first product I purchased from Saddleback, and I have to say, I will always buy everything I can from this fantastic company. The case is perfect, the smell, texture, and weight is perfect. It holds the iPad securely, the hand strap really is functional, and it looks so great - I have received many compliments and questions to where I got it. The only issue, one other people have talked about, is the straps on the sides partially cover the outer edge of the screen. Mainly, you just can't see the time if you have the iPad in Landscape orientation. That said, I've had mine about 8 months now, and it has stretched a bit and it is much better now. If I could go back, I would buy this same case a thousand times.
I was looking for a company with good looking products, with quality leather - Saddleback meets both of my needs to perfection. I seriously will never buy from anywhere else - it's worth the price of admission.
I read every. single. review. before ordering this case. I knew what I was getting into when I ordered and I wanted no surprises. Having worked with leather before I knew it needs a "break in" period. This isn't a flimsy leather case--the leather is thick--think of breaking in a new pair of boots or good shoes. I have had the case for a few weeks now and it has almost broken in to the point of perfect. The main button is still a tiny bit off center to the left, but I can see the time, wifi bars and battery life in the upper corners just fine and the case edge does not cover the screen. The only "trouble" I have still is in portrait mode trying to exit a page, but I simply add a tab, move the page over and exit that way. As the corners break and the device settles in it is possible I won't have to do that anymore. People who buy this case are going to have to have patience while it breaks in, and you need to help it do that. Here is what I found helped close the cover flush and stay open like a book faster: I carefully folded the front cover (running my fingers up and down pinching the spine of the cover) backward each time I used it until it started to loosen. I also folded the flap back and tucked it in the outside loop stitching to keep the flap in place and help keep the case open during use. Doing both of these has helped my case lay flat either open or closed within the first week or so.
Craftsmanship: You will not find another "custom" leather case made as well as this one. The leather is top quality (remember I know leather) and the stitching is excellent--nice thick thread was used. All the stitching is even and straight with no hanging or loose threads. The backstitching is perfect using the same holes which gives the case a clean, polished and well thought out stitch design. It's everything you would expect a great leather craftsman would create. Every device opening is reinforced-and the leather is thick-you couldn't tear this case apart if you tried.
Color: I purchased the tobacco brown leather because I know over time the oils from your hands will make it look worn and old. I love that look. If you don't want that, then I would suggest the darker Chestnut or Coffee color...it will still happen, but it won't be as noticeable.
Overall: No one knows I'm carrying an iPad--ever, until I open it...which is what I wanted. I have dropped it and the case has protected it. The leather has a nice feel on your hands...and the smell!!! The smell makes me feel like I'm walking into a leather shop every time I pick it up! If you want a unique case that is clean and tasteful yet simple and have the patience to break in the leather, this case is for you, and you will not be disappointed. It will be the last case you ever buy because it will last forever...
I managed to purchase my new chestnut iPad case on Dave's Deals and I am very happy with the purchase. Apart from a small, negligible blemish on the finger pocket, I can't see anything flawed with it.
Despite what many reviewers have said, the case does not really compromise on functionality. If you want the front cover to fold back completely, it is a simple matter of pinching the spine when in it folded position. When you do this constantly for about a day, it folds back without issues.
Although you have to take some effort in pushing the iPad firmly inside the case, the device can be made to sit pretty much dead centre. It does however tend move a little when in transit, but it s a simple matter to nudge it back into place. One minor issue I have is closing tabs on the far left in Safari in portrait mode. In landscape, it is not a problem.
I do not use the finger pocket at all as I prefer the front cover to be flat against the back of the device when I read, but it is a convenient place to put the flap when not in use.
If you miss the wake/lock function, you could fit your own magnets to the inside bottom corner - providing it doesn't offend your aesthetic sensibilities.
I bought the iPad mini cover six months ago and have really tried to like it but it drives me nuts. If you are the type of person who will be bugged by not being able to scroll, delete emails, or close out of applications easily because the leather surrounding the iPad is constantly in the way then do not buy this case; you will be disappointed. The leather is very nice, the case protects the device, and you could probably toss your iPad across the room without it breaking BUT when you go to actually use your iPad you will find yourself constantly fighting with the case and moving your device around just so you can click on things. The quality of the leather is totally overshadowed by the lack of functionality.
I have quite a few Saddleback Leather products and I speak very highly of them but the iPad Mini case just hasn't worked out well for me. The quality of the leather and build are what we have come to expect from Saddleback, which is perfect, but the fit just isn't right.
As several other people have stated on here the bezel is just too narrow. If you want to touch anything on the sides of the screen or use one of the iOS7 built in slide menus or any slide menu in an app then you have to move the ipad half out of the case just to access that part of the screen.
The build quality is good but the usability is subpar, especially when you pay $90 for an iPad Mini case. I think your money is best spent on a different case.
Let's start out by what I really love about the iPad mini case. I have the chestnut and the color and quality of the leather is wonderful. It is s aubstantial cover, but still thin as not to overwhelm the iPad itself.
The leather piece that allows yoou to hold it is a nice feature and the strap works in a variety of ways to get the case closed, open or to allow the case to function as a stand.
As reported by others, the only aspect of this case that doesn't allow it to be perfect is the fit. It needs to be redesigned so that the entire iPad can be used when in the case. It is close, but the left edge is not completley in view when holding it and the top and bottom are cut off slightly. Again, it is close, but unless over time the iPad fits differently in the case, this is a desgin flaw. With a slight adjustment, this case would be a BIG TIME 5!!
Dave needs to have his head checked. I got an iPad mini case for 25% off Dave's deal and I have scoured this thing for 20 minutes and can't find a single wrong with it. If you were thinking about buying a Dave's deal but question whether or not the issues with the item too much for you to handle I say pulled the trigger by you won't be disappointed.
This case is a work of Dave!!!!!!! Not just art! I have waited several weeks after receiving mine to give a review and I have to say I have no complaints. Fits great on my retina display mini and using the leather milk on it brings out the beauty of it even more. I agree with one reviewer about a scaled down version for an iphone. It would make me actually buy an iphone then.
This case is awesome. Craftsmanship is great. Protection is good and it looks beautiful. I have an idea for a similar case, but for iPhones. Same deal, just scaled down I fit an iPhone. I would love to see an iPhone case like that. But this case rocks.
I have bought two of your mini iPad cases.WOW- The leather is beautiful. The protection it gives is outstanding. I would recommend this product to anybody looking for a quality product. I plan on buying a briefcase next. Keep up the good work. Blessings- Pastor Bob Gaska
I like the case very much. Receive compliment and brought my from David Deals.
Wow, what a nice case for my iPad mini. The fit is snug and secure and it wasn't hard to insert as suggested in a couple posts. It is still slim and light and it is well protected. I am very pleased with this item. Check out Dave's Deals...thats where I got this one. After a 25% discount, I cannot see ANYTHING wrong with this cover. Love the leather smell too!
Just received my carbon bk. iPad mini case. I agree the fit is slightly off for my mini retina, the increases thickness of the mini doesn't help either. Nevertheless I am keeping it. I love the carbon black, looks like a block of dark chocolate. I plan on making a slight modification to account for the 2nd microphone on the rear of the iPad. Looking forward to seeing the case age.
I ordered the Chestnut case for the iPad mini recently. The case is beautiful, with deep, rich color and excellent workmanship. It provides a great deal of security from damage to the iPad exterior. I also love the hand strap; something my Saddleback case for my larger iPad does not have. However, the fit is not the best. It misses by about 1/8" on the left side. This doesn't seem like a big deal, until you try to click on something partially covered by the case. I would probably still recommend, but this is an expensive case, and I expected a better fit.
Great fit! Really makes the iPad classier. Never will have to get another case this one will last forever!
I had posted a review earlier this week about why I felt the the iPad mini case only deserved 2 stars. That review basically put forth that I was sadly disappointed with my mini case once it had arrived. It was my very first Saddleback product - I had read so many good things about them - but I simply found the fit for the mini to be poor. This was due to a couple of things. First, I found it to be QUITE snug. I had to monkey-arm the cardboard insert to get it to budge, and once I had my mini in the case I felt like there was a potential for damage to the mini because it was so difficult to remove. It seemed like either the screen could get damaged since I had to squeeze so hard to pull it out, or the lock button might suffer damage as it slid in and out. This may change with a proper breaking in, but it made me nervous nonetheless. The second thing that bummed me out about the fit was the leather material around the screen. Mine had a tendency to obscure the title bar when in landscape mode. If the mini was properly seated in the case, it overlapped a smidge on all sides. My particular case, however, would slowly push the mini up toward the opening and exacerbate the problem. I like to see what time it is on the iPad when I have it in landscape mode, so this was a deal-breaker for me. It might not be for you.
So, you see I've bumped my original review up 1 star. Why is that, you ask. Well, I have found that Saddleback definitely does offer stellar customer support. Remember, this was my first SB purchase so I had nothing personal to base my experiences on. When I got in touch with them via the online chat tool to complain about the fit of my mini case, they were quick to make arrangements for me to return it, but they didn't offer to pay for shipping. I felt that because it was a fit issue, and not a golly-gee-I-just-want-a-snazzier-color issue, that they ought to pay for its return trip home. It is much easier to print out a label, slap in on a box, and drop it off. It is a different beast - at least for me - to make the time to go to a post office/UPS/FedEx location to make arrangements and pay for shipping. Yes, this is laziness on my part, but also a matter of principle.
When SB read my review, they not only thanked me for posting it - they value a round opinion on their products - but also immediately sent me a return shipping label. Ding ding, we have a winner folks. That is the type of customer service I had read about online when researching SB products, and that is the type of service that would bring me back in the future despite my poorly fitting mini case.
Many thanks to Kelly, and kudos to SB for standing behind what they make/sell. Above all, please don't think that they would remove a review willy-nilly because it gives them heartburn. I asked them to take the old review down - lacking an update tool - so I could give them full credit for their hard work. And I may not recommend this particular product, but I do recommend SB.
I replaced my 3rd gen iPad with an iPad Mini, and when this case was announced knew I'd be getting another Saddleback case for it.
Given the quality of the iPad 2/3/4 case, I knew it was going to be good. What I didn't realize, however, is how much a few subtle tweaks to the design have improved the product.
1. I was concerned they wouldn't be able to reinforce the bezel strips with the metal insert that makes them nice and stiff and prevents the case from squirming when holding the iPad in use..well, they've done it, and this case is just as structurally stiff as the previous case.
2. There are small metal inserts in the edge of the cover, and most importantly, in the single large strap - this keeps the tip of the strap straight and stiffens it, ensuring it remains easy to insert into the strap loop on the back of the case as it wears in.
3. The hand insert on the inside of the cover is fantastic. Might not have worked with the weight of the larger iPad series, but on the mini, it's a great new feature.
4. Most importantly - this version of the case does not have the neoprene padding sandwiched between the outer cow and inner pigskin lining. This makes the case lighter, slimmer, and retains the excellent feel-in-hand of the mini in a way that the larger case didn't. Everyone I've shown the case to has commented on how it keeps the iPad Mini feeling slim, which was a concern of most people I showed the iPad 2/3/4 case to. The mini case still offers excellent protection - I don't think, given the smaller size and lighter weight, that you're trading off any protection at all.
