I received this last Christmas as a gift from my mom.
Now that it has broken in a little, cards are easier to get in and out of the slots. When new, cards were very hard to get out of the slots. Unfortunately, the thickness of the wallet hasn't been affected by breaking it in (see picture demonstrating the thickness with six cards, a receipt and a single bill). It is almost ridiculously bulky even when nearly empty and I intentionally keep it almost empty to mitigate that problem. This, of course, sort of defeats the purpose of having a wallet.
The basic layout is classic but the design isn't that great given the bulk of the wallet. Some of the stitching at stress points looks messed up. Maybe the new ones are more precise and clean.

This wallet, along with a lot of other Saddleback products, had been on my wishlist for a long time. I saw Saddleback through Huckberry a long time ago and really liked the look of the products. Unfortunately, a personal crisis ruined my finances and I wasn't in the market for premium goods.
Having had this on my Amazon wishlist for a while, I've seen the price go up. Then something happened, as I got confused on which products were on my Amazon wishlist as the prices on my wishlist were not even in the same ballpark of those on this site (Amazon's wishlist links to the site not price - these aren't sold on Amazon). So I guess Dave after hiring Gordon Gecko decided to suddenly raise prices by 70+%.
You know how much I didn't want to believe this? I checked commodity prices to find a justification. I was even more surprised to find that hides have dropped over a third in price on the commodity exchange in the last two years. Dave's explanation of the increase includes the price of leather. Huh, how about that? Hey, he should have included the price increases in gas while he was at it. Whoa, just think about how some of the main costs that go into production have gone down significantly in the last two years. But why not say leather is more expensive? No one is going to actually check the commodity prices on hides, right?
Hey, you know something else? Machiavelli suggests in The Prince that, "Severities should be dealt out all at once, so that their suddenness may give less offense..." Hey, and Gordon Gecko said, "Greed is good."
I guess you could say I'm a little angry. Originally, Saddleback seemed like a company that was going against the American corporate culture of building cheap crap that needs to be replaced every year. Saddleback charged more but you got a product that was going to last so it actually worked out as an investment. And you got a good quality product not prone to failure.
This has obviously changed. Saddleback is now a luxury item that you buy to show off the brand name stamp which is now prominent on everything (wasn't before). Dave says this isn't the case but he also said leather has gone up in price and apparently he has been breaking even or losing money on all sales for the last 5 years.
Unfortunately, the prices now negate the longevity of the products due to real world issues of theft, loss, or accident.
I'll be debt free in less than 3 months and I will then have more money than I know what to do with which is why I've been frequenting Saddleback and reading reviews as of late. It's too bad as all of the other Saddleback products have been removed from my wishlist.

I've had this wallet for years, very well made. I haven't had any problems with this wallet. It's solid.
There are two major design flaws of this wallet. The first is the overall thickness of the wallet. It's approximately a 1/2 inch thick, completely empty. If you fill the card slots, it's about 1 inch. If you put money in it, it's even worse.
The second is that it's not quite tall enough for international users. Non-American currency is generally of different size depending on the value of the note. Where I am, the two largest notes do not fit properly. So, the largest bill I can easily carry in it is worth about $12.50. The next largest bill is worth about $60, and I can only fit it in if I am very careful and get everything lined up perfectly and then tease it into the pocket just right. The top edge of the bill is just inside the wallet. The next largest bill sticks out about a 1/4 inch no matter what I do.
I could overlook the second fault, if it wasn't for the thickness issue. That is just a deal killer. I am currently looking for a replacement wallet after carrying the Sattleback for about 2 months. It's hard to accept, because the quality is so good. The part of me that longs for a quality item in our current age of mass produced crap wants to hold onto the wallet... but, it's just too thick. I have even got rid of over half the cards I used to carry in the wallet this replaced (due to my previous amazing wallet being over 12 years old, and currently out of production). I may try to cut out one of the sides' card slot pocket and see if that makes it workable... but that's a lot of work and hand stitching needed to fix a wallet that isn't the right size for local currency, anyway.
Overall, I would not recommend this wallet. If you live in the United States, although the bills will fit, being practically limited to the $20, you will usually be carrying quite a wad of cash and adding that to this over-thick wallet will be like carrying a baseball in your back pocket.
You only have to turn this wallet over in your hands for a few seconds to see what a quality item this is. the feel and quality of the leather is sublime, the stitching is done with extremely thick and sturdy thread. I truly believe this wallet will stand the test of time and probably even surpass me (I'm 24). The only downside is that in the beginning this wallet is extremely stiff. you will need two hands to slide just one card in a slot if you don't want that card to break. After about three weeks the leather has become flexible enough to work with.
I received this wallet exactly a year ago from my daughters as a birthday present (I made it easy; I sent them the link). I have no complaints for this wallet; I think it is an exceptional product which will last many years. It is durable, and the leather is beautiful. You will not be disappointed with this purchase.
I purchased this wallet over 2 years ago and it has continued to be a great wallet. I got my dad one for Father's day and he loves it. He put it to use right away. As soon as he opened it, he got a wiff of the leather and loved it. Great wallet that can last a lifetime and also makes a great gift that can be appreciated for a lifetime.
I have the medium bifold wallet in chestnut. It took a while to get it broken into, which was painful (imagine long grocery lines being held up because I can't squeeze my credit card out of my wallet, much less back into it; oh nevermind, just stuff everything into my pockets; I'll sort it out later). It's leagues better now, about a month in.
It is a beautiful object to behold, and I love having a beefy, manly wallet on me. The chestnut red isn't too obtrusive: it's really just a dark reddish brown (the dark coffee brown is virtually the same thing, just with no reddish hue). Also, the chestnut color doesn't make it a chick wallet at all, but rather makes it fun and lively while maintaining that deep, rich color.
Functionally, it has enough card slots. I put two cards per slot. It has a space behind either side of the visible card slots, where I store two more cards each side. So total, I have stuff 16 cards into my wallet, plus cash, no problem. The wallet doesn't become too bloated by any means. Also, if it gets scratches or anything, it just looks better. Plus, the wallet opens up ample opportunity to explain what full-grain leather is to people who only know genuine leather (e.g. it's genuinely leather!).
Excellent wallet by an amazing company. 5/5 stars.
Bought a wallet here December 2011, more than five and a half years ago. Lost it backpacking in the Porcupine Mountains. Best wallet I've ever had. Showing no wear. Handsome, functional, felt good in my hands. Room for a few credit cards, ID, cash, business cards, notes. I'm sad that it is gone. Maybe somebody will find it and send it to me, someday. Today I need a wallet, so I'm ordering another one. Happy you guys build a quality product. Looking forward to getting a replacement.
I feel bad giving it just 3 stars but I'm just not used to carrying such a thick wallet. Yes, the craftsmanship is there. Yes, the quality and smell of the leather is exceptional. Yes, it holds 6 cards and money. Put it all together and its old-school THICK. I use this wallet during the week for all my cards and then switch out to my Saddleback minimalist wallet for weekends when I'm just carrying drivers license, cash, and a couple of cards. If you dont mind a thick wallet, this is for you and you will LOVE it.
Sorry, Dave. Its nothing you did wrong to drop to a 3, its my desire to not be so thick. Its not you, its me.
Poor construction- Very thick and the wallet has a huge piece of pigskin that ruins the piece.
Inconsistent manufacturing- Made in Mexico, my wallet didn't even have all the stitching that the wallet is supposed to have and it in fact ripped after a few months of use.
Poor design- See other reviews, your cards will rip.
Very unsatisfied, and although I could go through the rigamarole of sending this product back, but I am not from the 1950s and do not own an e-bay business so I am simply not used to shipping products to companies as they so request.
I have had the medium wallet for four years and just gets better with time. I am a RN and work for radiology group doing IV sedation. for MRI Numerous times have had to go into room for emergencies with my wallet in my pocket. No issues as scanner erases the metal strip so you know the drill replace cards and ID . The radiologist have great interest .in my wallet . I have had no issues with card breakage either.i have the wallet in tobacco and the patina is just beautiful. You will be pleased I have no doubt.
I purchased the medium bifold wallet a couple months ago now and wanted to wait before I gave my opinion on it. First thing I noticed upon receiving it was the quality of the material and the stitching! Top notch in every aspect! Now after a couple monthes if daily use I can honestly say it is the best wallet I believe I've ever owned. Hasn't broken a single card, has held up wonderfully in my world of use and abuse, and has taken on an even more beautiful look with its use! Will not hesitate to purchase from Saddleback Leather for whatever needs may arise in leather goods!
I've had a medium bi-fold wallet for some time now - maybe 2 years or so at this point? I read about the company's products on an online forum I frequent and had to try one. I'm glad I did!
The quality of this wallet is outstanding. Like many of you, I've churned through an assortment of lesser wallets over the years and have finally found a keeper with Saddleback.
My wallet (I selected tobacco) is SO beautifully broken-in now. I'm rough on everyday items like this, my wallet shows the "scars of use" with class and without an ounce of damage.
I'm now exploring other Saddleback products - does that make my wallet my own personal "gateway" leather? Ha! ;-)
This was my very first purchase from Saddleback Leather, and it has ignited a passion that's resulted in several more. I have never seen a wallet like this before. It's rugged, yet classy enough for the board room. The craftsmanship and materials are just outstanding. Every inch of leather and thread just screams quality.
Whether you've been using expensive designer wallets or cheap crap from the big box stores, this will be a huge step up. If you're thinking about buying one, there's no need to hesitate - you won't be sorry.
I purchased this wallet al little over a month ago now and wanted to give it a trial period before reviewing. Well I can honestly say it's without a doubt the best wallet I've ever owned! So far it hasn't broken any of my cards/license and is taking shape very nicely. The leather is darkening and taking on a very nice aged and rugged look. The quality put into this wallet is incredible. Nice to know there are still some genuine craftsmen left in the world!
As you might expect, the quality and build of the medium bifold is exceptional. I gave it only 4 stars because of the thickness of the wallet. I spent days with rubberbands tied around it to break it in just like a new baseball glove but there is no way to reduce the heft. I purchased the chestnut and its very dark however compared to my other chestnut pieces.
This wallet has a simple yet durable look and feel. Its simplicity is attractive. It is considerably thicker than any wallet I've ever owned and that will get some getting used to. It feels like it will hold up for years. Overall I'm happy with my purchase.
Overall this is an amazing wallet. Well-designed, well-constructed, simple and practical and beautiful. Even if it doesn't last 100 years, I'm sure it will be a few decades before I'm looking for another wallet.
My one reservation is that the wallet does not fully accommodate non-US currencies. It fits dollars just fine. However, with many currencies, including the Euro and the West/Central African franc, larger-denomination bills are physically larger than smaller denominations, and they stick out slightly from this wallet. This means that, even when the wallet is closed, other people can see how many large-denomination bills you have in your wallet. Not an ideal situation for an American living or traveling abroad.
This could be fixed by increasing the height of the wallet by just a couple millimeters. If Saddleback did this, keeping in mind currency sizes outside of the US, this would be a five-star wallet.
After all the years of buying wallets, (probably hundreds of dollars spent) I now have the wallet that I should have gotten years ago. A no nonsense, Made In America, made to last wallet. It needs broke in, just like a good quality baseball glove or a nice pr of boots. If it didn't it would be another one of those cheap wallets. Wasn't sure what I was getting sight unseen. Now I know. Money well spent. Looking into other product as well from Saddleback leather.
It is everything I was expecting it to be. The wallet appears to be very well made and feels heavy duty. I'm looking forward to breaking it in, so it looks and feels even better.
I have no doubt this wallet would last 100 years. However, any cards (debit/credit) you keep in the slots won't last longer than a few months. The leather that divides the cards is pretty thick, and when you sit on the wallet, this causes the cards to crack along the dividers. Unfortunately, this is usually right along the magnetic strip. The cards break when you sit on the wallet, and I'm not a particularly heavy person (160 lbs). Again, the wallet itself is really nice. It looks and feels great, and the workmanship is top notch. I just can't justify using it daily because I've been stuck with broken cards far too often when I needed them to work.
I'm pretty much new to the SBL world, but in the past 2 months I have purchased 3 items. A ID wallet in chestnut, small bifold in tobacco and a medium bifold in dark coffee brown. I am pleased with all of these products. I will probably switch between all of them but the medium is my clear fave right now. It is a big piece of leather and very masculine. I'm just wondering how long will it take to break in. Very stiff leather but seems built to last. I hope to have this wallet a long time. Thanks SBL
I love this Wallet!
Bought it during my senior year of college and it has been in my pocket every day since. It held all my cards, cash, receipts, one of those disposable flossers, a spare key to my truck, concert tickets, condoms, the occasional cigar band, and more in those 5 years very nicely. I bring it with me hunting out in the rain and snow it's also been put through the washing machine once or twice. The only oil it gets is whats on my hands and it looks better today than the day I bought it. Other than at the fold all the stitching is in perfect condition.
I have purchased another as a gift for friends and they love theirs as well. Do yourself a favor buy this wallet and never worry about getting a new wallet ever again.
Just recieved my new wallet from Saddleback, couldn't be happier. The quality and craftsmanship is second to none. I was most recently using a Coach wallet, which I really adored... Until now. My previous wallet was nice and soft after two years of use, but felt really thin. I love this wallet, and can't wait for it to soften up after some use. I have a good feeling this wallet will look wonderful, and feel great as time passes... If it's anything like my phone sleeve, or notepaped holder I recently purchased, I'm sure I'll love it.
God bless y'all.
This wallet is by far THE best wallet that I have both seen, felt and ultimately ever owned, and I feel that it will definitely last me a lifetime and will attract the attention from others (in a good way). However if you live outside of the USA make sure that you check the import tax and handling fees for your country as this is not displayed when purchasing the item, however can be found in the FAQ page of the site, not knowing that the import tax and handling fees were included meant that I had to pay an extra £25 on delivery of the wallet on top of the £57 that was previously paid, making it a rather expensive wallet. All in all its a top wallet however it definitely comes for a top price.
