I have four of these note holders. One medium chestnut, medium tobacco and two small chestnut. Beautiful leather and makes paper work more organized. Have had them for awhile and they withstand a lot. Our cat even put his signature on one of the chestnut pads. Makes it kind of special. I hope they design a thermos sleeve or straps to put my copper thermos on one of my bags. Maybe some day soon.
I have been using the small notepad holder in the tobacco color to jot down note in class and I have to say that I spend more time looking at it than I do actually paying attention to the lecture. The build quality is far superior to anything else that I have seen on the market. I have had many compliments on this piece!! I agree with Saddleback's philosophy and will always go to them for all of my leather needs!
I work in real estate and needed a quality porfolio for documents, contracts, note-taking and business cards. If you like quality, then this is one of the best. If you want cheap, then go elsewhere. This portfolio exudes timeless quality, craftsmanship and durability. It gets better with age and you'll never need to buy another one. It's a little heavy and stiff due to the thickness of the leather and pigskin lining. However, as you break it in it takes on a patina gets more pliable. You'll love owning this good quality piece.
I ordered the medium coffee brown from my husband for our anniversary last year and he loved it. Used it everyday, found it very functional and handy, and it got more beautiful with age. Unfortunately a month ago someone broke into his car and stole it along with other random stuff. So we've given up on recovering it so I decided to reorder it because I know he misses it. It's seriously that good.
I bought the medium size in black..... LOVE IT!!!! see my other reviews of how great these products are: I've bought the notebook holder, big wallet, front pocket briefcase, front pocket backpack, & macpro sleeve cover ALL in black..... I'm a fan & now life long buyer of Saddleback Leather Co. products!!!
I'd been looking for a writing pad/folio for some time, but the traditional offerings, including those from high end companies were bland and had no character. Then I found the notepad holder from Saddleback Leather. I ordered the medium notepad holder in Chestnut and could not be happier. It is extremely well made, unique, full of character, and very professional looking. Don't be like everyone else, stand out! Don't think twice about ordering this one, you won't be disappointed!!
I have a large carbon black portfolio.
I couldn't believe the weight of this thing when I first got it. I could probably beat someone over the head with this and make it really hurt. That, and I'm not sure it will be great for my shoulder when carried with other items in my tote because DARN, THIS THING IS HEAVY. Also, the pigskin lining smells like a freshly-painted wall. I have leather goods from various other makers and an old dark pigskin chestnut SBL ID wallet; none of them smelled like solvent. The smell has begun to fade but that's besides the point. Dave, could you guys do something about this? My *design* complaint is that the pen holder is too thick and narrow, making it hard for one to use anything but skinny ballpoints. Fortunately, that's all I use, but others may find it a waste if they use fatter pens.
That aside, the construction is impeccable and I like the pocket placement. I love the loose sheet pockets and the big-enough name-card pockets, because in my line of work (lawyering) those name-cards always come out at meetings and events. I also love how the portfolio folds in two so nicely despite the thick layers of leather, and the thick polyester thread sewing. I'll be taking this to court and meetings and I have no doubt it'll last a long, long time.
Just arrived my small size Notepad Holder, in dark coffee brown. The quality of this product is exceptional! The thick full grain leather looks and feels great. I love the dark coffee color and smell of this notepad is rich and swarthy. The rigidity of this notepad is stiff which I like because it makes writing while standing easy. The small size is built with four rivets on the inside pockets where I will use to store notes, paperwork and receipts. This area usually is subject to a lot of stress, breakage at some point is possible but NOT with this beast of a notepad holder! I can't think of any way Dave could have made it stronger. Well done.
I normally don't write reviews, but this portfolio is so nice it demanded I write a review praising it. I bought the medium size in tobacco and could not be more pleased. It opens and closes easily, yet is extremely durable...something tells me I could throw this out of my car on an expressway and go back to find it completely intact. If you are thinking of buying this, do not hesitate, it's worth every penny.
My first purchase with Saddleback Leather was the bible cover. I needed this notepad to complement it for note-taking during church. I purchased the small in chestnut color to match my bible case. The notepad is of very high quality. The copper rivets are a wonderful accent to the beautiful leather color. I had no problem purchasing a standard 5x8 notepad to fit in the slot. When the notepad first arrived it didn't stay shut very well. I massaged the spine of the cover, even folded the case backwards and then left it under a heavy book for about two days and it's stays shut perfectly now. I would highly recommend this product to anyone needing a notepad cover. After just two purchases from Saddleback I am addicted!
I gave this as a Valentines Day gift to my husband and he went bonkers for this. The quality of it is absolutely stunning. The color is perfect! This was our first buy from Saddleback and I have to say we are already hooked and looking forward to buying more quality timeless pieces. Definitely recommending this company to everyone!
I always use spiral bound 5" x 7" notebooks for work and had an old leather cover for 15+ years that was finally going. I looked in stores and online EVERYWHERE and couldn't find a leather case to hold a 5 x 7 spiral notebook.
Finally I hit Saddleback's website and saw the Classic Notepad holder. The website doesn't show that it can hold spiral notebooks, but I called and spoke with a very helpful woman. I explained what I was looking for and very quickly we figured out that the small notebook holder would work perfectly, so I ordered one - and it does.
I got it fast and it is really, really, really nice. It's heavy double-layered leather with heavy stitching and very cool copper rivets. Bonus for me are openings on both sides - I can slide the notebook cover into one side, a scale ruler on the other sides and there's a pen holder and business card slot.
This is serious leather though, so it doesn't fold easily. I'm breaking it in like a baseball glove - the old "rubber band around it and few nights under the mattress" trick and it's taking shape nicely.
This is a great, high-quality notebook cover at a very fair price.
Nice job Saddleback!
I've had my large tobacco notepad since Christmas 2015 and wanted to post a quick review.
This has been a great piece of kit that serves not only as a great conversation piece and notepad, but I've also taken to using is as a backdrop for product photos. The texture of the leather works wonderfully as a backdrop for highlighting small pieces of jewelry and such!
To address the comment I've read elsewhere regarding not being able to keep the notepad closed when it's new. There's no doubt the heft of the leather makes the binding very stiff right out of the box Mine wouldn't close and that was to be expected. The fast and easy fix was to fold it back on itself. When open, take the left edge (folder slots) and fold it completely around so it's behind the note pad (finished outside face to finished outside face). I placed mine that way on my desk, and put a book on it for a night or two. It immediately solved the problem and the lid stayed closed perfectly after that. Breaking that spine can take a long time and that was a fast fix. Don't be worried about damaging it from doing that -- it's more than plenty tough!
Huge fan here. Have a few SB products. Never been let down until now. Just like most of you, I rely heavily on these reviews since this stuff is expensive.
I bought this Medium Notepad Holder in Tobacco to compliment my Large Classic Briefcase. After six months, my briefcase still has a beautiful leather aroma. I love everything about it. I even remember the joyous feeling I had while unboxing and just laying into it with all my senses.
But this thing.. It smells toxic. You could catch a buzz off of it. Wreaks of glue/plastic. It's nauseating. You literally smell it from 3 feet away when swung open. Not sure I even want to put it in my briefcase. So disappointing.
I was originally going to buy the iPad pro case but forget it. Those reviews are horrendous. Thought I'd go this route and just throw the iPad in it to run from office to conference and back. For that purpose, it'll work great. I personally love the thickness and overall functionality. The pockets are tight but I'll stretch them to my needs/liking. Plus I can put the apple pencil in it. Just barely snug enough though. I can see this loop stretching ever so slightly to the point that the pencil will no longer hold. But for now.
One star for smell, five stars for quality.
What's up, Dave?
I own the small notepad holder and liked it so much that I ordered the large one as well. The small notepad holder fits perfectly in my Love 41 Leather mini tote standing upright. The quality of the holder is outstanding. Mine gets thrown around often and holds it shape well. It is thick and sturdy but doesn't feel bulky. Excellent construction. I purchased one as a gift for my son.
So I'm meeting with clients the other day in the Board Room and was taking notes on a 8 1/2 x 11 note pad, you know, the yellow ones. And I got to thinking that I'm helping people buying and/or selling their house and here I am looking very tacky with a plain Jane note pad. So I thought to myself, "Self, how would Dave handle this situation?". So off to Saddleback "Makes you look good" Leather to solve the riddle and this is what I found. I bought both sizes of note pad so I'd be ready for any situation. My first client meeting with the new pad was today and the first thing the client said was "Wow, that's neat. Where'd you get that?". So for the next 5 minutes we talked SL. I figure I'll get other compliments as well. They are both of the highest quality, have versatile slots and holders and are just really neat! My 13 year old son is already plotting my demise as he's already asked me when he can have it! I told him in maybe 40-50 years to come see me! So drop everything and head on over to Saddleback and pick up a handful or two. Now I just need one or two of those cool copper pens to go with them! Highly recommended by me and clients alike. 5 Stars
I LOVE all of my Saddleback items and I just received the medium notepad holder today. I am not very impressed. The quality and durability are great which is why I'm giving it 3 stars however, I think it's too bulky to use in a professional setting (and I haven't even put the paper in yet). I also have a medium satchel in which I planned to carry this and I think it's going to take up too much space in the bag.
I purchased the small size and the first thing I noticed when I opened this notebook was how comfortable it felt in my hands. The weight is not too heavy and the size is perfect for grab and go.. OR even to stuff into my Saddleback briefcase. Bought this on a Dave's Deals in Chestnut and still can't find why it was discounted. Maybe some extra scarring on the hide? But it's beautiful regardless. The only thing I would change is how long the pen/pencil holder is BUT I'm sure Dave had a purpose in designing it that way. I have yet to be disappointed in anything I have purchased from Saddleback, and that is the honest truth. Thanks Dave!
This notepad holder is very cool.
Mine was a 25% Dave's Deal. I guess the discount was because of an awesome scar on the inside cover. Honestly Dave could have created an "Awesome Scar Surcharge" because it adds so much character.
I've had my larger notepad holder for about a month and I almost want to baby it! It's the perfect size for me, feels great, smells great (hey now!), and just looks great. I let my other leather (SBL and others) get beat up because they look nice after scratches and a good conditioning, but I find myself taking care of this notepad holder more than I should...
It's not as heavy as others had said or complained about.
Some complain about it being so stiff they can hardly get anything in - mine wasn't as stiff. I have two Economist magazines in the large pocket, some papers in the smaller one, some business cards in the card slots, and no pen in the pen loop (probably won't ever even use that).
My only complaint is that I wish it would've had a side pocket where the notepad goes, similar to that in the smaller sized notepad holder. Your options in which types of notepads to use in this notepad holder are somewhat limited by this. In the end, I think I'll make it work (Rhodia does sell wirebound pads that will fit in here), but that could've been different.
Overall, this notepad holder is great. As I said, there is one thing I would change about it, but it's certainly not a dealbreaker for me. I'm very happy with this purchase and look forward to putting it to good use in years to come.
I got the large notepad holder in black to match my thin briefcase with outside pockets. It is beautiful and matches the bag perfectly. It appears well crafted and constructed, and sturdy.
Like other reviewers, I agree that it will take a long time to break in, which is o.k. I wish there was a clasp or button (it can't be a buckle Dave - I know you love those) to keep it closed. This would probably help with the break-in, and prevent documents from spilling out. I also agree that more functional folders on the left side would be helpful. Frankly, I cannot fit many documents in here. Last, I am in the habit of keeping a backup pen or highlighter handy, so a second holder would have been nice. All in all, I'm very happy. Thanks!
I purchased the medium chestnut for myself as a Christmas present and received it quite quickly to Calgary Alberta Canada with the new reasonably priced shipping to Canada of 15$. I hadn't purchased it before due to the previous high shipping costs.
Opened the box and smelled beautiful leather... looked closer and really liked the simplicity and the craftsmanship. This is my third item from Saddleback and it would look great with my chestnut slim briefcase but wont stay my third item as I like it so much I'm going to give it to a great employee for a great year as a Christmas Gift. Well deserved but quality for quality and I hope he loves it for years to come.
I'll have to order a replacement soon :-).
I love Saddleback leather. I have 2 wallets, the medium padfolio, and the large Moleskine cover. The padfolio is beautiful, but it is WAY overbuilt. It is like 2" thick with a legal pad and weighs a ton. That and the fact that you can't really use the side pockets effectively (as other reviewers have commented on) make it more a "show piece" IMO. I realize the leather has to stretch and "wear in" like with the wallets, but we're talking about a padfolio here. It's going to take years to stretch those inner pockets.
I modified mine by basically turning it into a notepad and file folder "taco". I essentially removed all of the pockets/stitching/rivet so that it is just the leather cover. It's no longer a padfolio, but rather a very handsome pad/folder cover. Yeah, it has empty stitching holes and stuff can slide out, but it still looks awesome (I still get compliments) and I can shove whatever I need in it in a hurry (especially in and out of my Timbuk2 messenger bag). It's way more functional now IMO.
Dave, if you can make a padfolio that's not as thick and has more functional pockets, please do. I'll be the first to purchase it. Keep up the great work
Got the large folio on black. I love the light pigskin lining on this piece, the contrast looks great. One thing I would suggest is an extra slot or pocket on the right hand side so that you can use side-bound notebooks as well. I've had trouble finding decent quality top-bound notepads suitable to go in this beautiful folio, though that might just be an Aussie issue! Other than that I love it and need to find more excuses to use it!
I could not be happier when i decided to add this small notepad holder to my cart. The design, the quality, the leather texture, thick leather but soft when you feel it. Too bad i haven't find the exact notepad, the notepad sold here mostly lil bit wider.
The moral lesson, find the notepad 1st and get this beautiful crafted notepad holder.
