From the time I was little, every year, we got my dad a new wallet(among other things) on Father's day.
Well, four years ago, I decided to go with Saddleback's Passport wallet, because my dad needed a larger, more durable wallet. He'd gotten to the point where his wallets were literally falling to pieces before the year was up. The Passport wallet is still going strong and getting more and more beautiful by the day. It took a bit to break it in, but he loves it.
Unfortunately, the wallet a year tradition has ended, and I'm now trying to think up something new haha!
I ordered this for my son as a gift. I am disappointed in quality of this product . I have eight other saddleback products so I am well versed in the quality. The leather feels like a finally checkbook cover you would get from your bank when you open account. The dye is uneven. The covers do not match up was this a Dave's deal though I paid full price. And stitching is uneven. Was going to get messenger bag as birthday gift to me next month but now gun shy. I want to love these products as in past.
Bought this as a "test sample" to see what the famous Saddleback quality is. Was not disappointed. Have it in dark coffee brown which is a gorgeous color and will probably order other stuff to match.
The leather seems bullet-proof and the stitching is top notch. The edges are unfinished (i.e. not burnished with beeswax or anything) mind you, but this goes well with the rugged & rustic look of it. Fits my passport just fine (duh), as well as 7 cards in the card slots and my vaccination notebook in the slot. Will do a quick YT review as well.
Will definitely be buying more. Highly recommended.
I received my tobacco tint Saddleback Passport Wallet this morning and it's my second Saddleback product. I have to fly international routes a lot so I regularly carry a passport. This is the first passport wallet I've ever had that would be suitable as a daily use wallet, and I won't name the brands but I've had a lot of passport wallets in the past, both leather and nylon, at prices ranging from cheap to hideously expensive. Most of them are pretty awful. The Saddleback Passport Wallet, loaded with 6 cards, some cash, and my double thickness highly inflexible 52 page passport, is only approximately an inch thick overall and it is still comfortable to sit on. Without the passport in place, it is as comfortable to sit on as the Saddleback Large Bifold. I would recommend Saddleback's passport wallet to anyone who needs to carry a passport regularly. I haven't tried it in a pair of dress pants yet, but it does not stick out the top of the back pocket of a pair of Levi's 517's. After trying the two big Saddlebacks, I am never going to go back to a "normal size" wallet again.
I wrote a more detailed review, but wanted to make a note about the leather quality, to address one of the earlier reviews.
The leather on mine (coffee) is very thick and smooth -- it's just as nice and just as thick as the leather on my satchel and other SB stuff. I would suppose leather has natural differences in texture, but I don't see any sign that they are skimping with this product -- it's wonderful leather.
I use this as my full-time wallet, whether or not I'm carrying my passport. It has a great size, slim and not too heavy. It won't hold a billion cards, but I wanted to pare things down a little anyway. It does just fine with a reasonable number -- 8-10 credit-type cards, plus a few business cards tucked in. The outside pocket is great for receipts.
It will hold 2-3 passports easily -- you could add more, but it would take a bit of time for the leather to stretch so they'd fit comfortably. I use it for my passport and my son's -- my husband wanted his own wallet. :) I put blank 3x5 cards in that section when I'm not carrying my passport. I can also fit a Midori "passport"-sized notebook (the refill that goes into the Midori Traveler's Notebook) in there very neatly. There's no pen loop, though, and there's not a good way to attach one that I can see.
I love that you can get any kind of currency into the bill area. I travel enough internationally that I like not having to have a separate wallet when I go overseas.
Doesn't hold coins (I got a SB coin purse too, and mighty nice it is). For currencies with high-value coins (EU, Canada, etc.) that might be a downside.
One oddity -- I got the coffee because I wanted the lighter pigskin lining, I thought that would look cool. (Kind of a "black and tan" thing going.) But this wallet doesn't seem to have any pigskin -- at least, there's no lighter colored anything on the wallet. So maybe I got old stock, or maybe the design just doesn't have pigskin. It's awesome either way and I'm happy with the coffee color, it's very classic.
It's bulletproof, of course, and I like the RFID shield, esp. as I have a Global Entry card. It will last forever, of course. It's beautiful, of course.
I ordered two wallets and a belt back in 2012 and loved the quality of the product and especially the Dark Coffee Brown leather. Just received this passport wallet as a gift after talking about how much I liked the Saddleback products I already own. I'd love to say I love this product as much as the others I own, but the leather quality is different. The previous products had leather that felt thicker and was smooth. The leather on this feels thinner and has the feel and texture of a vinyl checkbook cover. The pigskin interior is also different, only one side contains pigskin, the other side is raw leather and is of lower quality than my other products. The stitching is the same high quality with no defects, but due to the lower grade of the leather, it doesn't have the same quality feel as the other Saddleback products I own. The picture shows the previous leather version used in the other products I have, but I don't feel it accurately represents the leather in the current version I received.
I love Saddleback. I love the company culture and they definitely know how to build brand loyalty. But here's the thing- I bought three passport wallets (one for me, two as gifts) last year and they were tough, stylish and robust. Then I bought another one a month ago for another overseas trip and it wasn't nearly as thick or solid-feeling. The stitching was good, the design was the same, but the actual leather seems thinner and more synthetic-feeling. Not sure why it changed over the past year, but I'm definitely a little less enthusiastic to place my order for the Classic Briefcase if it's not going to be as awesome as the circa 2012 Messenger Bag I've been carrying thus far. I own multiple ipad, iphone, and other goodies from SBL and I hope my latest purchase is a fluke. It wasn't a Dave's Deal or anything.
We are a family of 4 and travel abroad quite extensively. This wallet serves our purpose extremely well. It carries 4 passports, one small USB thumb drive, couple of SD cards, currency bills, a few blank checks, assortment of business cards, credit cards, a pen, small memo pad and boarding passes/travel documents (thanks to the two external pockets). Despite all these items, the wallet folds well and doesn't crimp the passport edges. I have been using this for about 18 months and the pockets are still tight and snug and the leather looks, feels and smells great. It is good to have something compact and versatile. I own several SB products and have yet to be disappointed with the quality and durability.
A few weeks ago I purchased two (one carbon/black, one brown) of the no longer available, Passport Sleeves. They were Christmas gifts for the two men in my life who "Don't need" anything - my big brother & my boss/friend. I had wrapped the one for my brother & had it under our tree. Last night my husband came to me with a small piece of leather and scraps of wrapping paper in his hand :o The only witness to what happened to the Passport Sleeve is one of our two dogs! Neither of which have chewed - other than their own toys - a thing since they were puppies, seven and eight years ago.
I'm not sure why the sleeve was discontinued. I think it's the perfect accessory; especially for someone who doesn't need to carry their passport "every day" but when they do - it looks very impressive :) It's like all of our other Saddleback items; smells wonderful, high quality and made to last - just don't put it under the tree if you have dogs!!
This is my goto when I travel because it protects my passport AND holds my credit cards while also protecting the information on the credit card with it's security lining. My everyday carry when I'm not traveling though is an iPhone/wallet mashup called the BookBook. I'm hoping Dave will come out with a similar SBL product that essentially melds this passport wallet and his iPhone slip cover. That would become by everyday carry AND my travel carry.
The size is a bit larger than I thought, but it
fits a passport in perfectly. (If curious about
the size fold a sheet of paper twice). Fits in
average men's pants pocket well.
Tanning is good.
Leather is good.
Thread is good.
It is good quality but I doubt it will last a
This should be standard of what wallets are
Got mine yesterday and LOVE it as with all my SB products. I had a smaller credit card/i.d. wallet but needed just a smiggin' more room so I decided on the passport. Great decision! Just perfect for my needs. Thanks SB! Another wonderful purchase. Sweetness!
Recently returned from Russian far east. I used his wallet as my daily-use wallet so I was never without my passport. This trip involved travel through 4 countries, multiple customs clearances, boarding passes, local currencies, receipts, etc. wallet handles all these flawlessly. Keep the current boarding pass in the outer flap, ready to present. Wallet will require that you wear a jacket as it will not fit in your pants pocket, however, IMHO, jackets should be worn, even in casual settings, when you are a guest in another country.
I just got this passport wallet yesterday and I've already declared it to be my favorite wallet! What I love about this wallet is that one, It's RFID protected, it is very spacious, it's light weight, plenty of compartments, I can fit my iPhone, I can easily fit a small pocket notebook where the main passport goes, and it easily fits my back or front pockets. So to sum up, I have a regular RFID wallet, a passport wallet, an iPhone wallet, and a notebook cover all in one!!! This is definitely now my favorite wallet from the collection and planning to use it as a daily carry.
I love taking this wallet with me to the airport and slapping it down on the check-in counter, immigration, car hire counter, coffee counter and especially the lost baggage claim counter. It makes such a reassuring thud, especially when the cash section is full because it holds like £20,000 it's so big. My only complaint is that I cannot fit my Field Notes in there. If I could fit my Filed Notes in there then I would be able to slap it down at every given opportunity! Imagine that!
I own and use the Big Wallet and ID Wallet, I've also handled the medium and large bifolds... today a Passport Wallet in tobacco arrived, and I think it's just about the best of the bunch. Perfect size for a passport and some airline loyalty cards, plus some local currency and receipts. The leather is a little thinner and softer than on the Big Wallet. It fits perfectly in the breast pocket of my leather jacket, so it's really just right, there's not a thing about it I'd change.
As a professor I do my homework as one would expect. I have large briefcase, large satchel, iPad case, and, of course the passport wallet. I bought this specifically for international travel, but at this moment I'm using it as an everyday wallet. Again, at the moment, I have $400 in cash, my passport, 5 receipts, and 10 credit cards in the wallet. For me, this was a smart purchase.
I was planning on buying a large bifold, but at the moment I'm quit happy with this one.
For passports, you will not find anything better than this. Who am I kidding, for whatever you're looking for, you won't find anything better than Saddleback. The great thing about it is that you can use it for everyday purposes, it's not too big for jeans back pockets and perfectly for interior coat pockets. You take this out at the airport to get your book stamped up, and you'll find you're more proud of what your passport is in than what's in your passport.
I purchased this wallet in Tobacco Brown before we moved my family to China this summer. It worked well for even 5 passports, though it was well stuffed! I use it as my everyday carry around here because of the varying sizes of bills. Keep a copy of my passport and a few $20s in the little fold up slot and my bus passes in the credit card area.
I love the RFID blocker for my passports, but it means I have to take my bus pass out of my wallet when I need to use it. Not a complaint, just a reality!
As I said about my gadget sleeves, the best thing that happened after I got this was bending, slapping, folding and rolling this beautiful collection of leather. It suddenly became even more amazing!
Thank you for a great product that got me through a lot of crazy traveling!
Great passport wallet. Ordered in the new tobacco color. Love it.
A little to big for EDC for me... but for traveling and what not, will be of great use. Great job again SBL.
I recently went on a trip to Mexico and brought my DCB passport wallet with me. It's great! I was able to store my passport, debit card, ID, boarding passes and receipts safely. Great looking and feeling wallet. I carried it in the side pocket of my shorts and it fit well.
I've had my passport wallet (in Chestnut) for almost two years now. It's traveled with me to China 4 times and Europe once. When I go overseas it's my only wallet I bring. It has my passport, a few credit cards, drivers license, and any cash I may be carrying. It holds the bigger foreign bills, and I put my receipts and boarding passes in the pockets. It can get a little thick (it starts out "Saddleback thick"), but no worries. I carry it in my front pants pocket, and the edges are really starting to conform, while it is also developing a patina that just keeps looking better. There ain't no way you can wear this out. If you're looking for some thin Italian-style leather wallet that doesn't make much of a bulge in your pocket, this isn't it, but if you want a wallet that looks great and you'll never need to replace it, look no further. Expect to hear compliments from hotel desk clerks.
Has room for large bills and all documentation needed for travel. I had my drivers license, two credit cards, fat stack of bills, photocopies of ID, flight information, rental car information, hotel information, boarding passes and my passport with plenty of room left over. It's big, but not bulky and its worth the small hassle of carting it around to have everything right were you need it. Very handy and well made.
What an excellent wallet! Originally bought this for travel purposes and it eventually replaced my everyday one. The leather is thick and strong enough to withstand daily use. I have used this wallet in chestnut for over 3 years and each time I open it, I feel I have bought something worth while; the quality is superb. The best part is it has several key areas which I can use. When traveling the passport is in it's sleeve with the boarding pass on the outside one. In everyday use it holds a small notepad and receipts. The other sleeves hold the credit cards and currency respectively. It even has enough space to clip on a small pen and still feel comfortable in the back pocket.
