I own the Classic Breifcase and the pouch was just what I needed. As a salesman in the field, I'm always going in and out of my bag and for small items the pouch saves me time and keeps me more organized. The way it attaches to my briefcase handle is pure genius. In my business I need to be and look professional, fumbling around for a pen or your business cards can make you look like an amateur. Being able to quickly access your small items in a pinch is great! On the weekends away from the girlfriend and hanging with the guys, my pouch quickly becomes my cigar holder with enough room to hold a few cigars (in glass tubes to discourage breakage) a butane lighter and my favorite cigar cutter. The closure in my opinion is unique but I'd prefer the one that is on the "Front Pocket Pouch" bag. Having said that, I did enjoy the video of Dave imitating the man he met who sold him the bag originally, "Look purse beautiful look beautiful" :-) Hilarious!
This is a great bag that a guy can wear without, I suppose, jeopardizing his manhood. Hemingway would have carried this on his shoulder had he had an opportunity.
But I have mixed feelings about the pouch. Most importantly, the clasps that hold the bag and be easily clipped open or closed, allowing one to remove the bag. I understand that this allows owners to clip the bag (without the strap) to a larger bag. This may be really cool for a few customers in the end substitutes gimmick for practicality. I say this because these clips are a liability. Several times, while on a subway, or sitting, if the bag is pushed up just right against one's side or knee, the clip will actually come off. And once it is off, one could easily stand up and not realize that their bag and possessions are not longer tethered to their owner.
I sent the pouch in to Saddleback, for this reason, and because the stitching on the back side had come off. They redid the stitching (not the best of jobs, which has already started coming out again). But most disappointing, the company did not address the clips. They appeared to have put two new ones on, instead of simplifying the bag by making the strap go straight to the main rings (without the swivel, detachable hardware).
This is an awesome bag. I get questions about it all the time. Which is why it warrants some fine tuning. One customer suggested making two versions of this bag. This size. And one just a little larger. This is a great idea. I am diabetic and hold my basic supplies, needled, credit cards, phone, keys and maybe a pen. But it is really difficult to get it all in there. Just a mere inch would make huge difference.
But the clasps are the most troubling. They should either be optional if not removed. I can't imagine that folks would actually use them that often.
Lastly, I would remove the buckle on the middle of the strap. It sits right where a fellow rests his back on a chair. It can get uncomfortable. Is there a way to put the buckle closer to the ends of the strap, or remove it altogether?
I say, go as simple as you can with this beautiful bag. Fewer buckles and swivels! Stronger stitching, and possible a slightly bigger size option.
In short. I love this bag, which disappoints me because is problems have not been addressed. I really hope Dave and team consider making a few small tweaks.
Seriously....less than 24 hour delivery half way across Texas. You could not have hand delivered it any quicker. It is the perfect accessory for my bag and gives quick access to my large iphone 6 plus and other small items I need access to......Hangs of of my other bag perfectly (hid the strap to keep my wife away from it). Both of my sons already want my bag so I gave them your website!
As always the quality is beyond compare and service, well from South Texas to the Oklahoma border in much less than 12 hours is pretty exceptional. You will be a line item in my budget soon.
Thanks my friend, Thom
A very handy puch for small items and I'm happy with it. Doesn't fit a lot of stuff, but it isn't meant to. A minor improvement would be to line the side pouch with pigskin as well because now papers tend to get stuck in the outer pocket lining or rather the lack of lining).
I hated this bag as soon as I pulled it out of the box. It looks great but doesn't hold much. I gave it to my sister who likes to take it when she's shopping all day (maybe she just told me that since it was a gift). For me it wasn't practical at all. I could only fit car keys, a slim wallet and a phone in it and that was pushing it.
I received the Pouch in New Tobacco January 2014 and have used it every day since. Either by normal wear or by attaching it to my Classic Briefcase, I can’t think of a day I haven’t made use of my Pouch. It has taken on a very different color than it began and has a lot of character. When I first got it, I noticed a rivet that was a little out of kilter, but I chalked it up to “initial character” and let it be. (Also, I’m living in China and that made a return undesirable.)
All of that love for the pouch was suddenly squelched about 6 weeks back when I noticed a problem with the clips. Around Christmas 2014 they started having problems spinning freely. I didn’t realize this was indicative of a bigger coming problem until one of the clips popped free at the stem. Apparently the button-end of the stem had slowly warped a bit and worked into the seat for the stem. Then it just worked its way out over time. I reseated the clip and tried to close up the problem area and hoped for the best, but then the other clip had the same problem, too.
I have absolutely enjoyed using this Pouch every day and want to give it five-stars for usefulness. But the hardware issue cannot be ignored. One clip giving up would be a bummer, both is unacceptable. I wouldn’t have written this as a review if it weren’t for another review mentioning a similar issue with the stem. (And upon inspecting my briefcase, I’m suspicious that one of the stems there may be undergoing similar issues.)
Saddleback is going to fix it when I get stateside, which is good, but I don’t think it’s something that should have to be fixed after less than 18 months of use.
Beautiful pouch! The leather is excellent! The pigskin is great! I keep my 2 pocket knives, Saddleback Leather Small Bifold wallet, a handkerchief, mobile phone, and a moleskine and pen at the back pocket. The only thing I'm concern about is the closure. The closure is thin leather which might tear in a few years of abuse. 9 months in, and the no sign of the pouch falling apart.
If you're looking for a bag that will take the stuff out from your pockets; then this pouch is for you. I'll be getting Satchels, belts and briefcases in the future for sure!!
I received this pouch as a Christmas present, and I love it! I am a women and I have never carried a purse (I am a bit of a Tomboy) but as soon as I saw this pouch on the website I fell in love! It is perfect for the items I need to carry! I keep my iPhone 6 (I am a quality person), my pocket knife, keys, and my SBL front pocket ID wallet. I still have a little room for something else if needed! Everyone in my family wants saddleback products now!
I've had mine for about 4 years now. As I live in the North of France I only use it when the weather gets quite too hot to be wearing a coat with deep pockets. I usually carry in it my pipe, some tobacco, a swiss army knife, handkerchiefs, some papers and whatever I want or need to have and that's fairly small. I must say it is maybe a little bit too small sometimes. But the leather gets softer with time, so I advise you to leave a piece of wood or something inside when you're not using it to stretch it a bit.
As for the sturdiness, I'm a bit afraid that, with time, the leather making up the closing system is getting too soft and thin for my taste... Still holding up though, so no real problem for now, but I'm a bit concerned about it. Other than that it is absolutely gorgeous, sturdy and to-the-point. It is my faithful companion of hotter days.
I've had mine for 3 or 4 years now, and it has served me well. Living in the north of France, I use it mainly in the summer, when I can't have a coat with deep pockets on me. I usually carry a pipe, tobacco, a Swiss army knife, handkerchiefs, papers and whatever else I might need and is small enough. The pouch and the strap are very sturdy and not likely to break or wear out in my lifetime. I am however a bit more worried about the closing mechanism, as it seems the leather is thinning out and getting a little soft over time.
Volume-wise I must say I find it a little bit too small. If I wanted something much bigger I'd buy a satchel of course, but it is sometimes a little frustrating. Good thing is, the leather will stretch overtime, so I recommend leaving it filled with a piece of wood or something when you don't use it.
Overall, great and affordable item for small needs !
Over the past few years I have purchased a medium briefcase, every size of satchel, three wallets, 4 belts, two iPad covers, computer sleeve, note pad holder, and now a pouch. I always find something new to purchase for myself and for gifts. All of the items are top quality. If you like leather that will last a life time, there is no better place to purchase. The customer service is awesome, prices fair, and products spot on. I would suggest that those who like to update their iPads consider a sleeve in lieu of the case. Your case will barely be broken in before it is obsolete.
I purchased this as a Dave's Deal in the same color (Chestnut) as my large Thin Briefcase. I absolutely love how the metal clips hook to the D-rings on the briefcase. It essentially gives me an extra pouch on the front to carry a Kindle Paperwhite as well as a few field notes and a Fisher Space pen. It has permanently found a home on the front of my briefcase and it really adds to the functionality of it as a whole.
Nearly everyone gave this pouch very good reviews and I agree. However, I would recommend this pouch be supplemented by one a bit larger. Perhaps an inch (~3 cm) in both length and width. As for me I can get only my wallet, iPhone 4, my Saddleback Sleeve Wallet and Business/Credit Card Wallet in the two compartments. Really nothing else without forcing it. (I can't imagine how others manage to stuff anymore in the pouch, e.g., keys.) Granted, more room will make things more accessible as the leather breaks in and stretches.
Consider, the new and larger iPhone 6 is coming out soon. I figure it will not comfortably fit in this pouch with a regular size wallet and anything else. And unless I can comfortably fit the iPhone 6 in my present pouch I may refrain from upgrading to this new phone. I'm of course not giving up this very good leather pouch.
I've had my pouch for about a year and a half. Love it. Really beautiful piece. Part of my identity. Then one of the parts of the clip broke, where the pin fits the ring. And I became very sad. Now I have shipped it back to Saddleback for repair. And now I painfully await for its return in melancholy . . .
i LOVE my pouch! it is so incredibly wonderful and versatile. i switched to the front-pocket wallet in order to put all that extra wallety stuff that i don't need on a daily basis into a medium sized SBL billfold. now, with my pouch, i can go super-minimalist, it perfectly carries my pocket wallet, a small notepad, a pen or three, some lipgloss (or three), my inhaler, a pocket knife, and usually 2 or three pretty rocks of some sort. on top of that, i have stretched it out, using my iphone, to fit my iphone PERFECTLY in the back pocket, snug as a bug. i clip my keychain onto the strap clip, and i'm ready to go!
best thing is, that if i *do* need to carry more, it clips perfectly onto my leather tote (size small) just as neatly as it does to the briefcases in the video! that way, i can fill my tote up with all the OTHER stuff i need when i need that big ol' bag, and keep my everyday stuff where it is every day anyway. love it. gave away my Namebrand-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named totes, since i don't believe i'll be needing another bag ever ever again. until i want to get the SBL tote in a different color, that is.
This is a great bag for all the little things I don't like having in my pocket all day (keys, phone, leatherman, pad, pen). The description says that it can clip to other bags, but it doesn't mention that the clips are exactly the right width apart to clip to the belt loops of your pants. The strap is great when you need more flexibility, but if you're not in the mood for purse jokes just clip it on and you're good to go. You can still get to your front pocket and sitting is perfectly comfortable.
Great quality and super-tough.
This is an exceptional bag from an exceptional company. This holds my keys, wallet, knife, phone, pen, and camera every day. The bag should last me much longer than the warranty is good for, so I hope my grandchildren take good care of it. The only thing I can possibly see going wrong on it is the closure. That single piece of leather can get worn out to the point where it may break. But I've had mine for half a year now, and no regrets on buying it. As soon as I turn 18 I'm going to be purchasing much more from Saddleback!
The Pouch is the perfect size for keeping a woodcarving kit. In it fits my current small carving project and all of my handtools--chisles, gouges, and knives. Very tough inner. Just grab and go. I have also used this for my sketch kit as well as it holds pencils, torchons, erasers, and small sketchbook.
I just received the pouch!I do believe you can be hooked with just one purchase.good going dave.
I have three of these. If I were to change any one thing about this item, it would be to use a strap/buckle closure instead of whatever one calls what's on it now.
Other than that, great bag.
I have had this pouch for a long time. I use it for a bunch of things. Mt wife teases me about my "murse" but i wear it anyways.
I have coonskin cap so I can pretend I am Davy Crocket.
My wife has carried for a small purse at times.
Very versatile and stylish. It complements my other saddleback carry pieces. Like accessorized art.
Get one and enjoy.
There are two things I never leave the house without wearing. 1) clean underwear 2) my Saddleback round satchel.
I've owned this bag for years and couldn't be happier.
I truly believe this thing is indestructible; it'??s been comfortably on my shoulder from Tahiti to Scotland and more.
Check out the list of things that all comfortably fit in my medium satchel at one time:
iPad, iPhone and all cables and recharging devices, various pens and pencils, wallet, reading glasses, sunglasses, camera, 5 cigar carrier, cigar cutters, clipper and lighter, comb, nail clippers, energy bars, hand sanitizer, tissues, pocket knife, small first aid kit, business card holder, sketch book, an occasional magazine and my tattoo machines'
these are daily things I carry without even using the back or side pockets yet! Let me see you try and put all that in your pants pockets!!!
Guys, do yourself a big favor; stop walking around with all that crap in your pockets. It'??s not comfortable and looks terrible! BTW; it's been proven that sitting on your wallet is terrible for your back, put the dang thing in your satchel!!!
Having owned a Classic Travel Case, I was looking for something a bit more sporty???? and compact to use when I need to run local errands without carrying an extra bulk with me.
This piece fits the bill perfectly, as it's flawlessly executed and is superbly elegant in its Spartan simplicity and minimalist practicality.
To fully appreciate its design and flawless workmanship, that instantly resonated with me the moment I saw it, I had to first spend countless hours on the web encountering pretty much more of the same ????garden variety???? items, not even remotely as good as this one.
I only wish for 3 small design improvements:
1 - The closure design, as was mentioned here, could be revised. Perhaps, a shiny statement????-type buckle or something similar would be nice though nothing too effeminate. :)
2 ?? Dimensions-wise I'd make it about an inch or two longer and wider it would make it even more practical and more masculine.
3 - Wish you could offer shoulder straps in various lengths, as I don't like mine too long (as I don't wear it across the chest) and after adjusting it for my preference, I still don't like having extra 'tail' hanging???? even if there's a way to curl???? the extra length inward -- just not my style. :)
I have been using my pouch for a few weeks now and find it to be perfect trips requiring a lot of walking. I also have the round satchel that I carry for work and have found that this pouch fits perfectly in the satchel so I can simply pull it out & go if I'm only needing a few basic essentials.
Now if only a larger pouch of the same design would be created I'd be all over it!!! Something large enough that would fit an iPad (not the mini)
Problem is now I want every color.
Just received my pouch yesterday, which was my first purchase. On the heels of that arrived my briefcase thin and my iPad mini case! :) As for the pouch, I can't wait to put it in use. The only initial observation is I'm not sure how this could ever hold an iPad mini (without a case) but other than that, it's great!
