I finally bought one of these, and I'm so glad I did. I almost felt like this bag was packed just for me as I received 4 decent size pieces of tobacco leather (my personal favorite) and an even amount of black, dark coffee brown and chestnut leather. I realize this won't happen every time, but I still thought that was pretty cool. I bought this leather to make myself some leather jewelry and maybe a little pouch for my electrician snips (I'm a pyro technician), and I certainly have enough to do that. I love that my leather has scars and marks on it, it's so beautiful to me. This scrap will also give you swatches so you can see the colors first hand before you buy a bag. Personally I don't like the black or the chestnut as they're too stern for my taste and they don't easily show character the way the tobacco does. I like the dark coffee brown as well because it reminds me of my childhood and sitting in my grandpa's old leather chair with him as he smoked his pipe. The color evokes such a lovely memory for me. Tobacco will always have my heart, but DCB is a nice 2nd. I may buy one of these every pay period in hopes that I end up with a piece with a brand on it. Hey, some of us buy lottery tickets hoping to hit it big & some of us buy sacks of leather scraps knowing we're going to win every time...if nothing else for the smell of fresh full grain leather. Personally...I like my addiction better. The legacy I will leave my future children (once I find my moderately attractive husband of course) is a workshop full of scrap saddleback leather...knowing they'll fight over it when I'm dead is just an added bonus.
After waiting for a very long time I finally pulled the trigger....And I'm happy I did. There is a great variety of the "colors" as well as size. As a mix media artist and novice book binder there is so much that can used in the bag-o-scrap it's unbelievable. As, expected don't think you will be able to make a wallet or hobo bag, but there is plenty in there to work with if you are an artist, and if not....use it as a "freshener" in any drawer as the smell of leather is so beautiful to olfactories!
I just received my order for the Full Grain Scrap Leather Kit...honestly I didn't know what to expect and how much I'd get. You over delivered.
The reason I bought the scraps was to be able to create a nice smell of manly leather. Wow, it must weight a couple lbs.
Smells awesome and there's enough to put in my car, office, bathroom and by my night stand.
There is nothing better than the sweet smell of fresh leather...and that's exactly what I got. Highly recommend.
Also, I read through many of the reviews including the not-so-good ones. Don't expect that these scraps are going to allow you to make anything like a wallet, purse or belt. It's a bag of fresh scrap leather that will make the room smell great.
Thank you Saddleback Leather! I'm ordering a 2nd bag.
How do you write a bad review for a bag of scraps? I bought this to get a better idea of the color options in person. It helped! I also use these scraps to test different ways to get a fast start on wearout process. Also, like the title says... it is a big bag of smell good! People pay a lot more than $25 for fancy yankee candles. I think my investment is way better!
I will probably buy this again if I find myself being any good at working this leather :) I only got Dark Coffee Brown and Black scraps (one small Chestnut Scrap). The great majority were Dark Coffee Brown. The Black scraps are quite small but OK. Most of the Dark Coffee Brown Scraps are palm size or slightly bigger (well...I am tall and have big hands but...). I have to admit that I bought this set after researching what SMALL projects I can create with it. Would I have LOVED to get "scraps" that would allow me to build a tote bag?! HECK YEAH! Was that a realistic expectation...umm...nope...
I would love to get some of the other colors! I will likely buy again...and I realize I might still not get the other colors...and I realize that I might get smaller scraps than this time...guess it's a "risk" I am willing to take (considering the price and quality of other scrap kits in craft stores...go check those out and decide...I decided this is worth it ;) ). Thank you Saddleback!!!
I order this with Satchel Purse and the Classic Trifold wallet for my wife.
WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!
MY excitement ends when I check the "scrap", As the title clearly said this are scrap and so what i received are scrap next to garbage that are useful for nothing, it composed of mostly laces like leather, and more garbage and more garbage. I love working with leather and i read first some of the great reviews before i place my order. I do buy some scrap from Tandy Leather but nothing came out like this garbage. If i can give this negative star i will give it (-) 5 stars.
My bag of scraps had a few pieces of about double business card size, but generally speaking it was thin strings from between strap cutouts.
My bag of scraps did have a nice smell to it, so it can always be air freshener, and it did give me a peek at chestnut leather ( I have no chesnut bags in my herd)
Really this is a gamble. Some folks have received some pieces parge enough to actually make something, mine is really more of a bag of legit cutting room floor scraps. My guess is that as they ellow more "natural flaws" in the bags, the less interesting these scrap bags will become.
I had been deterred for a while by negative reviews to buy some scraps and had tried to buy some on Etsy and other sites. I just like to tinker with the leather. But I wanted to buy a wallet sleeve and felt silly just spending $23, so I bought a kit. I honestly think they packaged it just for me. The sleeve I bought was Tobacco and my scrap kit had SIXTEEN pieces of Tobacco scrap. Scrap is a loose term in my case with these 16 pieces. The size of those pieces ranges from the size of a greeting card to a 16"x30" huge piece that I have no idea what is wrong with. A couple of them have some scars on them- but nothing major, not a hole in any of them. Nothing I would have been mad about on a bag.
The other half of the bag was filled with what I would call scrap- but a TON OF IT!!! It wasn't like scrap shavings- it was large connected pieces that had been stamped and cut out of leaving behind the equivalent of what you get when you have cookie dough left after you've used cookie cutters. There is still a TON of leather in that. I couldn't be happier with it. I don't know why they gave me so much leather- wayyyy over 5 pounds- but I am thrilled with it.
Just got my leather scrap kit today... one word... AMAZING! So many amazing pieces of leather to work with. Some of the pieces have amazing scars and one even has a brand! I can't wait to make all kinds of great things out of this leather. I got a great mix of large workable pieces and thin pieces in most all colors that will be great for bracelets, earrings and other accessories. I will be purchasing this kit again soon!
When I purchased my first scrap kit almost a year ago, it was great -- so great, in fact, that I am still using some of those pieces. Undeterred by recent reviews, I ordered two scrap kits in an effort to ensure that I had some leather on-hand for future projects. What arrived was about 10 lbs. of stuff that wasn't worth the cost to ship it. The pieces I received would be excellent if I was looking for sleeve fringe, a leather mesh shirt for breakdancing, or coasters for mini soda cans. My scrap kit also included a jigsaw puzzle made from leather pieces that would have been very usable if they hadn't been (intentionally?) cut into smaller pieces.
The News/FAQ's suggested that Saddleback would stop "cutting out the art" and "letting some of the cooler marks fall onto the cutting room floor." That should give you a pretty good idea of what to expect in your scrap pack: the *really* undesirable parts with stretch marks, wrinkles, bites, etc. Live and learn, I suppose. I certainly have!
I own 15-20 pieces of Saddleback gear and they have all traveled the world with me over the years. I've even bought some products to cut up and make my own gear (hard sided sunglass case, MacBook charger case, checkbook cover, etc). As you can imagine, this can get quite expensive so imagine my wonder and surprise when the scrap kit came on the market. Always sold out. No big deal, keep checking and when it became available I bought two kits. The UPS Wonder Man arrived and delivered my huge box of leather scrap. Two bags filled to the brim with tiny scraps, cut outs marked by what looks like a silver sharpie, one or two pieces of each color that were of any useful size in each bag. At $25 a bag it wasn't a huge loss and the few items I was able to make were far cheaper than cutting up finished Saddleback products. Nevertheless, I expected more and probably won't order another kit again. Still checking the site daily for Daves Deals and new products though.
I proudly own several Saddleback products, but I was not at all happy with this one. I knew it would be scraps - they make it clear there is no guarantee of anything useful - but I was hoping for at least one piece I could do something with. All I can use my package of leather for is bracelets. There's just nothing bigger than that.
I'm ok with that because they made it clear there is no guarantee you'll get anything useful. But I could have picked up better scrap from my local Tandy Leather. It really feels like they swept up the floor at the end of the day and put it in a bag. No love lost, just disappointed.
Although I own many (~15) different Saddleback products (satchel and pouch, wallets, notepad holder, iPhone cases etc), this is my first review. Let me start out by saying that I love Saddleback products and think they are the best. When I saw this deal I was really interested but after reading a few less than glowing reviews, had second thoughts. Recently, I wanted to purchase a leather sheath but they are more expensive than all the leather in this deal, so I thought I would take a chance, roll the dice and purchase 2 bags of these scrap kits. If I got enough leather to make one or two small projects then I would be satisfied, and if I didn't, I wouldn't be out that much money.
After opening both bags I can definitely say I got some very good leather. First of all, 5 pounds is a lot of leather. I spread out one bag and it filled my whole table (think 48" diameter round table). Many pieces were around 8" X 6" and I got quite a bit of lacing (some shoestring size some around 1' wide). All colors were represented but there was no pigskin. I took some pictures but can't figure out how to put them in the review. If you look closely at the picture in the description, this is very close to what I got.
I'm very pleased with this purchase. I can easily make my sheath, maybe a few small purses for my kids or wife, a dozen wallets and still have leather left over for some straps. If you want to make your own large briefcase or long belt, this is not the deal for you. But if you want a lot of really good Saddleback leather, roll the dice and see what you get. I did, and won.
I read the reviews. I was concerned about what I was going to receive. I had plans to build a small knife pouch out of tobacco for my Case knife. Wife wanted some leather pieces for craft work. But, I figured it would be hard to make anything from postage stamp sized pieces of leather. Im not sure how big some peoples letters are, but, boy was I shocked.
Ill let a pic do the talking for me. Threw a chestnut coaster in for reference.
This is two orders worth by the way.

The first time I felt compelled to review something on SBL. Normally its not needed, the product ALWAYS exceeds your expectations.
I was beyond ecstatic.
I read the mixed reviews and was a little nervous, but I decided to take a chance anyways since all I really wanted was enough leather to make a couple watch straps. I too was surprised to see the huge pile of five pounds of leather. I'd say about a third of it was the tiny little strands that I wouldn't really have any use for, but the other two thirds were several pieces about the size represented in the picture. Nothing huge (I certainly didn't have a huge sheet like another reviewer mentioned), but certainly enough for some small projects.
I separated out the larger pieces into the four colors, and my only complaint is that the color I wanted for my watch straps turned out to be the smallest pile. But that certainly isn't SBL's fault...
To balance out the two other reviewers, I'll pitch in my experience, which was different from the previous two reviews. I will give this product 4 stars since I was both slightly disappointed and pleasantly surprised. I received my scrap leather about 5 days after I ordered it, as expected. The 5lbs is actually a lot more leather than I thought. I'd guess that I have about 50 pieces of leather, the majority of which are 6"-8" square-ish pieces. I did not receive any 3'x1' pieces as a previous reviewer had stated, nor did I get any pieces that were postage-stamp-sized, per the other reviewer. I had expected to receive a bit more variety of sizes, but at least 85+% of these pieces are definitely usable. There's even one piece that has credit-card sized slits in it.
I plan to make a slip-case for my Nexus 7 (I can probably make one from each of the 3-4 colors with the pieces I have). I also plan to use many of the smaller size squares for drink coasters. I can't make a belt or a laptop case, but that's not something I was expecting. If you're open to what you can make with this high-quality leather, I'd say go for the box. However, if you expect to make yourself a belt or a briefcase, send your money somewhere else where you know the exact size you're getting.
I will use this 5lbs of leather as much as I can, and I will likely take a $25 gamble again in the future in hopes for some different size pieces.
I ordered 2 bags. The first bag had some decent pieces of various colors. The second bag had a couple pounds of the tiny scrap the size of postage stamps and the rest was mostly other small/stingy clicker scrap.
This review is more to set proper expectations for future buyers of this product. I was skeptical but optimistic after reading the review for these scraps (Mitch had not posted yet). I have been trying to get my hands on some Saddleback leather to make a camping stool to match my Tobacco Classic Briefcase. Called Saddleback and they informed me they do not sell their leather. A few months later they started selling scraps. Reading the product description it looked like it would not be sufficient. However, the first reviewer stated how surprised they were in the size of the scraps. "One piece is 3 feet by 1 foot, and there are several others of similar size. Dave is very generous with the "scrap" kit." So the day came and my box of scraps arrived. I was giddy to get my hands on it to start creating Saddleback inspired gear. When I opened the box I was greeted with what can only be described as a leather hair wig. A majority of the 5 pounds (which is actually more like 3) of leather is strips no larger then shoe laces, thin long strips. There are a couple of 2x2 and 3x3 INCH pieces. Zero pigskin scraps. "Briefcase for Ants" is the most accurate description they could have given. I am not sure I can make a drink coaster, maybe if I sew a couple of pieces together. REALISTIC expectation: If you want to see the color of the leather, this is perfect for you. If you want to make anything... then this is not worth the money. I have a number of Saddleback goods, all of them are top quality, worth every penny, and I am proud to be one of their customers. I think the Presidente is a great guy to work with. However, if you think you are going to buy this and get anything more than leather shavings then you are mistaken.
I had the exact opposite experience of the above reviewer. I bought 2 five pound bags of scraps hoping there would be some pieces at least large enough to make something with my son and girlfriend's daughters. The largest pieces out of the 10 pounds of scrap was about the size of 2 business cards placed end to end and there was one of these in each five pound bag. The rest of the scrap pieces were about the size of large postage stamps maximum and a vast majority of it was more like the size of pieces smaller than typical postage stamps and a few short strings. It was as if i received the bottom "shake" of a pile of floor sweepings. Also there is zero "leather smell" in both bags so I cant even use it as an air freshener. As per the ad copy i rolled the dice, took my chances, and lost....big time....twice (since i had ordered 2 kits). I am very satisfied with the multiple pieces of saddleback leather products I have purchased in the past and have given away multiple pieces as gifts but this is the worst purchase I have ever made from saddleback. I knowingly gambled with "you get what you get" and learned my lesson well. Be advised you may get great pieces to work with as the reviewer above me did but also be wary you may end up with a sack of "stems and seeds" that are not even large enough to make anything for even an ant. Will i buy saddleback products in the future?>>>sure I will as they have great well made products. Will i buy scrap leather from saddleback and gamble at the same time?>>>not again.
I was not sure what to expect when I opened the box, but I could not be happier. Without knowing the scale, I thought the pieces might have been relatively small. But there are a lot of very large pieces, and plenty to work with to make some substantial items. Obviously I cannot match Saddleback's quality, but I plan to make several wallets, lanyards, bracelets, sheaths for a Buck knife, and probably several other items. One piece is 3 feet by 1 foot, and there are several others of similar size. Dave is very generous with the "scrap" kit. My daughter and I will have a lot of fun working with these fantastic leather pieces. I would give 6 stars if I could.
