We use natural Markings Equal Inclusion of Exceptional Imperfection Ornamentation

"... Saddleback Leather no longer discriminates against any cow on the basis of age, appearance, lactose intolerance... if the beast has a natural marking or brand, or whether or not they worship the Divine Bovine."

Truth is, sometimes beauty is only skin deep... like with cows. Their poetry is notoriously terrible, but man, their hides are nature's art. We don't believe that flawlessness equals beauty. Beauty is when we're able to see something as it really is.

This is true with humans too. There are lots of quality people who are really beautiful not in spite of, but because of the marks life has given them.

So we had just gotten back from Africa when Suzette and I took our kids up to a small entrepreneurship conference in Colorado. During one of the breaks, my 3 year old daughter, Sela, was talking to a lady by the fireplace and the lady turns to me, slightly rolling her eyes and smiling and says, “Um Dave, your daughter told me that she just saw a cheetah up in a tree eating a zebra leg”. So I said to the lady, “Oh that Sela, she says the craziest things. Everyone knows that cheetahs don’t climb trees. It was a leopard.”

That time with the leopards was written down along with a lot of other great stories from that trip in my Moleskine. But maybe the best stories will be the ones told by the cover itself. And as it ages, it’ll become even more valuable to you because of all the memories and stories you have with it that weren’t written down.

    Just perfect

I have just started journaling and found the Picadilly essentials branded versions of moleskine notebooks. The medium journal fits perfectly in the Medium Saddleback (Got mine in DCB). I never imagined that the simple act of writing down any random thought could bring clarity to me but that's besides the point.

The DCB medium moleskine cover works perfectly with the medium moleskine and I have received numerous complements on it's amazaing ruggedness.

    Welcome Back Beautiful Black

Got this in black and it is gorgeous! Sturdy and thick construction. A little surprised when I opened the box and instead of that wonderful SB leather smell, there was a strong shoe polish odor. Hopefully this will fade away completely in a few days.

    Beautiful

This is my 4th SBL product, but my first in tobacco. Wow is this beautiful. I recently bought a Moleskine notebook to take Bible study notes and with its new cover, I just want to hold it forever. I am definitely hooked on the tobacco - the feel is almost nubuck. Another great product from SBL.

    Great

In-laws got me this for Christmas. It's great. As with all the other Saddleback products I own, it is very well constructed and fit for intended use. Won't be my last purchase.

    LOVE these!

    by |
I have 3 of these now and love them. The current tobacco and carbon colors are great... especially for the smaller saddleback items. I like the carbon moleskine cover so much, I bought 2 of the smalls for my daughters' journals to give them on Valentine's Day. I'm thinking their purple moleskines will look really cute in them. In the past, I always preferred dark coffee, but most of my purchases have been tobacco since the EIEIO change happened. This was actually my first carbon item... I almost didn't go with carbon this time since it's hard for me to spend saddleback prices on my 2nd or 3rd favorite color. But I'm really glad I gave carbon a try before it was discontinued!

    Works well

Just received the SBL Moleskin cover. It fits really well and gives a sense of presence and individuality to the typical moleskin journal. The only thing I miss is being able to easily access the envelope pouch on inside back cover. Guess I will just have to live with that!

    Always gets a compliment

    by - verified purchaser |
While I'm a huge nerd and software engineer; I keep it traditional with my trusty Moleskine for notes, idea sketching, working out algorithms and other little things I'm just happier to scribble down.

As a lover of all things Saddleback, I picked this up last year and have been through three notebooks with it. It's just simply a gorgeous wrapper. I've gotten so many random compliments and questions about it. "Is that custom made?" "Where did you get that?" "That stitching looks amazing." "Man, all your leather is so top notch."

I always just smile and say "It's Saddleback, dude."

While there's surely some practicality to owning this, I simply love the way it looks and feels in my hand and I'm so stoked Dave decided to make it. It's one of my very favorite pieces.

    Great moleskine covers

    by - verified purchaser |
I use these for my personal journals and prayer logs.
They'll last longer than I will I suspect, and that's just fine. My children will have them, and likely their children after them....Good! Everything in this world doesn't need to be disposable.

    Moleskin Cover

I got one and liked it so well I got a second one! It's one-of-a-kind and people ask me about it all the time. Very well made, great leather, sturdy, and wears well. I own the chestnut and tobacco colors - gorgeous and a great price. I'm a leather snob and this is a awesome product. Highly recommend.

    Perfect journal

    by - verified purchaser |
I am a journal connoisseur. My wife would say I am obsessed, and she has a point as I have a lot of journals. I never liked the Moleskine, as I wanted leather. Then, I ran across Saddleback Leather. A friend bought their briefcase, and I checked out their site. I loved the leather quality, and decided to pick up a journal cover. The design looked weird at first, as the back has an uneven curve. Then, I inserted my hard-backed unlined Moleskine, and I saw the genius of the design. The leather perfectly fits the journal with as much leather coverage without interfering with the elastic strap of the Moleskine. Awesome. My journal search is pretty much over, as this was everything I kept searching for. I wanted a refillable leather journal that could hold a pen and have plenty of pages. I liked their leather quality so much, I pitched in for several other Saddleback Leather products (briefcase, pouch, notepad holder and Bible cover). Each piece has character while still matching (all are dark coffee in color except for my notepad holder). I've had the jorunal cover for a year, now, and it has a lot of character. The cover has already outlasted its first Moleskine journal, and will likely outlast many more. I highly recommend Saddleback for any of your leather products. This is a small company that really cares about what they produce. The quality is second to none.

    Nice Addition to My Collection

    by - verified purchaser |
I'd recently decided to start using Moleskine notebooks to try to keep my thoughts better organized. Naturally, this led to the opportunity to pick up another piece of Saddleback swag. A Dave's Deal came up and I soon had this tobacco brown beauty in my hands. I like how the tobacco brown ages and shows character more quickly than the other colors. If you use a Moleskine, you might as well not only protect it, but have the coolest looking journal in the room. As a bonus, what else can you buy that's got a 100 year guarantee?

    Normal Saddleback Quality is Missing

    by |
Let me start by saying I love Saddleback and I have a number of items from them that I absolutely love and I will continue to add to my collection every chance I get. I have a briefcase, two wallets, belt, notebook holder, dog collar, ipad case, and mouse pad. However, the quality of this large Moleskine cover has disappointed me so far. I have only been using it for a couple of weeks so far so this may change.

When I first opened the package the feel of the leather was very different for all of my other products. It felt incredibly dry and brittle. The leather is also noticeably thinner than my other products, even with the pigskin lining. I am not sure if this product has thinner leather for some functionality reason or if I just received an inferior hide that slipped by the normally high quality control standards. After several coatings of leather conditioner it is starting to feel more like normal. Hopefully, this will improve with normal use and conditioning over the coming years. Other than that the other items like fit and stitching are perfect like normal. It really is a nice cover for the large Moleskine and I use it at work everyday.

    My 4th SBL Product

    by |
This one was my forth item from SBL. I have used Moleskine books for about 10 years and when I saw this was designed for the little black books, I had to get one. I use mine daily for 21 days at a time while working offshore. I got the Tobacco colors and after seeing how it gets better with daily wear, I was impressed.

    Good product, poor packaging

    by |
I was so excited for my husband to get this leather journal cover for the holidays. When we got the package, I couldn't believe how dingy and flimsy the packaging for this product was! It came in a plastic bag.. No packing slip.. Nothing. I don't understand. Why would anyone treat real leather products that way? It made me want to send it back.. But I didn't have a packing slip. So there goes that. It's a shame to waste such nice product on poor handling.

    Tolle Scribo!

    by - verified purchaser |
St. Augustine heard the words "Tolle Lege" which means "take up and read". He took up the Bible, read, and came to the Christian faith. For this journal cover, we will say "Tolle Scribo" or "take up and write!" because that is exactly what this case will encourage you to do. It is protective, comfortable, great looking, and great smelling. It helps hold my pen to my notebook and I have already had tons of compliments on it. I look forward to years down the road when it is worn and the edges are bent but it still functions as great as ever and looks even better.

Oscar Wilde Could have used one of These

    by - verified purchaser |
I knew it was a match made in heaven I found out that Dave was into Apple and Moleskine, which are just about my 2 favorite things. Naturally I bought some covers, and they couldn't be any more perfect. This in DCB was the first SBL purchase of mine, and I love it just as much now as I did when I bough it. Thanks Dave.

Nice looking, but had some trouble with the size..

    by - verified purchaser |
Someone wanted to give me a birthday present and I told them I wanted this particular case from Saddleback. I got it in Carbon Black. I put my large daily planner from moleskine (the hard cover one) in it.

I noticed that whenever I would spread out the planner to write, the covers move around from the securing flaps, such that one side would be sticking out more than the other. This could *maybe* also be attributed to the leather being stiff, and the part covering the spine doesn't have much give, but right now it's a bit more uncomfortable than not having a cover at all. Opening and spreading out the planner to write is no trouble usally, but when you start to close it, you'll notice the planner actually shifted around inside the flaps, and you'd have this compulsive need to readjust everytime i.e. sticking the front cover further into the front flap, or else the notebook/planner will be deformed (the front cover of the planner juts out more than the back cover, creating a slant along the edge of the pages instead of all of them nicely lined up together evenly).

I'm not sure if it would also be the case for the thinner, weekly format planner, since that would have a thinner spine. Maybe even the soft moleskine planners would be better because it'll be more bendy than the spine, but I have no intention of switching planner formats. Perhaps when I have time I'll post a youtube video of my cover, but for now, I have absolutely no qualms about the quality, the leather is nice and thick, it should be more supple over time, not a stitch out of place. Maybe I'll try removing the front cover of my moleskine from the front flap, or else I'll have to return this for possibly the bible cover and hope for the best.

I own several saddleback products and I like them all. This is my favorite though. Simple, well made, good leather. You might go back and forth between options for other products, but for this one, just get it.
