I just bought a 32” Old Bull Belt (1 1/2”) in dark coffee brown. It is an amazing belt that looks to last the full 100 years if properly cared for. It is only a hint darker than chestnut and without the reddish hue. 5/5 star quality, service, and shipping from Saddleback Leather Co: simply the best.
However, I have had quite a time finding the right size. Apparently, the 34” belt is abnormally long and not at all 34”. In fact, I have a 34” chestnut tow belt (which I have dubbed “The Anaconda” because of the way it constricts when I try to take the thing off; it is very, very thick) that I can only wear by using the very last hole, leaving a comic length of belt sticking out to one side. So after no small amount of frustration, I ordered the above mentioned 32” OBB (Old Bull Belt 1 1/2”), and it fit! I can now proudly and properly display my fashionable Saddleback belt by using the middle hole as intended. In short: it is my humble recommendation that the reader order a size smaller than usual (i.e. if one has a 34” waist, order the 32” belts). In any case, be sure to talk with a customer service representative first; they are an excellent resource to help you find the right size.
My only wish is for Saddleback Leather Co. to dispel any confusion by advertising the belts by their actual sizes (the average reader can stop here). I measured the belts and came up with the following numbers:
The 34” tow belt is actually a whopping 42” long, not including the buckle (which, by the way, is about 2” long, sticking out only 1 1/2” before it overlaps with the leather. So 42 + 1.5 = about a 43.5” long belt including the buckle). Using just the length of the leather, without buckle, the holes are made at approximately 34” (very last hole), 37” (middle hole), and 40” (first hole), respectively. That translates into me wearing the very last hole as I am a 34” waist.
Now the 32” OBB is actually 40” long (just the leather; with buckle, maybe 41.5”). Using just the length of the leather, without buckle, the holes are drilled at approximately 32” (very last hole), 35” (middle hole), and 38” (first hole), meaning I can wear the belt using the middle hole (since I'm a 34” waist). However, if I was truly a 32” waist (that was ten years ago!), I would have to order a 30” belt (if there was one), or I would look very silly!
Again, I wish Saddleback Leather Co. would advertise their belts according to actual size. I do not know how they currently measure their belts, but it sure is frustrating at best and deceptive at worst. Now, I have to return the 34” belt...
Since I was a 13 year-old boy, I searched far and wide for a thick, wide belt that would outlast me, something that would make me a man. My search continued for many years, to no avail. How many wussy belts I've gone through, is disheartening.
Enter the Old Bull.
That was almost half a decade ago, and, while I have begun to show my years, the Old Bull has not aged a day. The sun now shines upon my face, and the peasants grovel at my feet as I walk by with this Beast around my waist. My life is different now than it was before I wore an Old Bull. This is what it's like wearing a man's belt. Perhaps the only reason SBL doesn't offer it in a 2-prong version is because something that hardcore is likely federally regulated.
This is a quality belt, and it's obviously well built, but it's a poor design. The leather is far to thick to fit through any of my Levi's comfortably. I really want to like this, but it's just a bad design. Off to eBay.
So I just received my Texas made Old Bull Belt in DCB.... All I can say is WOW. Don't be surprised if like me, you notice this thing is twice as thick as your other belts. It seems as though it'll surely last a life time. You just might outgrow it before it wears out. I bought mine from Dave's Deals, but will gladly pay full retail price for another one in a different color... They are that nice. If you're tired of wearing "trash belts," you need one of these. I highly doubt you'll write a review saying otherwise. Thanks Dave.
I was very skeptical of the belt. I was very nervous that I probably ordered the wrong size or something. Nope, I followed the sizing instructions and it fits perfect! This belt is PHENOMENAL! I ordered mine in the DCB and will be ordering one in black very very soon. YOU WILL NOT be disappointed if you purchase this Old Bull Belt. Thanks SBL for yet another great experience.
Great belt. Very thick and holds up my gear well. However I wish I could get a smaller than a 32 or have the holes lower on the belt.
Thanks Dave for making the best belts. I got a black one for my black jeans and a chestnut for my blue jeans. These are high quality and will not break like a $12 belt from a department store. Quality and functionality at a great price. Happy New Year to you and Suzette and your family and crew! Thank you for making great products!
This is an awesome belt... really thick with a high quality good looking buckle. I have never seen such a good belt for sale let alone owned one. End of review.
And come on guys, do you really think that Dave Munson, designer of the worlds highest quality sophisticated leather goods, made a "mistake" and put holes too close to the end of a simple belt? Are you telling me you got so fat so fast that between the time you bought the belt and now you want to wear it on the last hole? The last three holes are obviously for aesthetics. So that if you do happen to use the last usable hole (the fourth one) you don't look like a buffoon wearing a 9 hole belt on the last hole. My 2 cents.
Just received my Old Bull Belt and couldn't be happier. Product was exactly as described and what a pleasure to know that there are still businesses out there who care about making quality products. Special thanks to the young lady who helped me with the sizing when I called in with questions, much appreciated. Ordered the belt Monday morning and received it USPS on Thursday. This was my first purchase from Saddleback and I'll definitely be back for more.
Having lost 85 lbs I needed a new belt but was really fed up of buying UK department store 'genuine' leather belts & wondering why they fall to pieces so started to research making my own. I looked at countless Youtube videos & was just about to buy the leather, dye, rivets, buckle & tools when I discovered the Saddleback Leather, 'full grain' Old Bull Belt.
I have the 34" x 1 1/2 inch in black & I love it. The sizing using Dave's chart was exactly right. The leather is unbelievably thick & strong yet very comfortable. I'm a biker & this belt holds up my leather pants, Kevlar pants & jeans. Each pair needs a different hole because of the thickness of material & the 3/4 inch hole spacing works just great.
I'm going over to the States in September to ride a Harley across Route 66 & looking forward to wearing my Bull Belt.
Here in the UK, most belt buckles are held by bending over the belt leather & riveting or stitching into place. The Bull Belt has an 'end cap' of leather making it different to anything else I could find here in the UK
Strong, comfortable & different make this money well spent.
Awesome Belt holds the pants and the
45acp glad someone makes a quality product.
This is the belt you've been looking for. One that holds up your pants AND your holster(s) without bending, sagging or generally being totally pathetic. I usually kill my regular store belts in about 6 months because I wear a holster all the time. Not this belt. You won't regret spending your hard-earned money on it because it seems like it will last forever. This is the ONE.
I've had my 1 1/2 inch Old Bull Belt in chestnut for over a year. The color is a good rich brownish red. I originally bought the dark coffee brown, but it was so dark, nearly black, that I exchanged it for chestnut. Overall I like the belt.
My complaint is the sizing. Other reviewers have said the same. Like many belts, there is a 6 inch range between the holes. Unlike other belts, there are 9 holes instead of 7 covering that same space. So far so good. Where is gets goofy is in how close to the tip of the belt the holes start. The first 2 holes are un-useable, the 3rd hole does work but doesn't look right. That means the 4th hole is really the first useable hole. So now the belt holes have an effective range of only 3 3/4 inches. You better order the exact size and then keep your waistline within that range. That seems odd for a belt that's supposed to be "the last belt you'll ever need."
It would make a lot of sense to move the holes another 2- 2 1/2 inches in from the tip.
Fantastic belt. I have had a crossbreed belt for a long time and it was okay however this belt holds up my 1911 with ease and is very comfortable ! Love it !
This belt is very comfortable, typical Saddleback solid construction, and the closer holes make it easy to adjust throughout a meal.
Great thick belt with a nice pop. Not as stiff as the tow belt.
The Dark Coffee Brown color is pretty dark - looks almost black depending on the lighting. If you want lighter I would suggest the Chestnut.
I don't think the buckle is user-replaceable - that would make it 5 stars.
I just got the belt out of the box and what a belt it is. Extremely well made. My only complaint is the size. I used the size instructions on the site but it is a little too big. I would have given the belt 5 stars if the size was correct.
I have so far purchased two items from Saddleback Leather, one of which is the Old Bull Belt. I can eagerly say that this is a company that produces premium quality merchandise and that keeps to high standards of integrity and customer service. You can certainly find cheaper leather goods, but you will be hard pressed to find better made ones. And all of their products are designed with YOU in mind. For example, the unique spacing between the holes in these belts may seem a bit trivial, but once you've worn one you'll know what I mean. You will find it even more rare a company that confidently stands behind its hand-made products and that is a true pleasure to deal with.
If you are looking for some squishy leather that's as soft as a baby's behind but not nearly as cute, and that will not survive much longer than a diaper, shop elsewhere. If you are interested in the real deal, products that will last a lifetime and that will only get better with use, Saddleback Leather is the company you will not regret dealing with!
Thank you Dave Munson and Saddleback Leather for keeping alive what made America great.
Customer Service gave me excellent guidance in selecting the size of belt I needed. I'm a thin fellow and they helped me determine that a 32 would work, and it does! As an aside, I wanted a darker color and wasn't sure the coffee brown would work, but it's darker than you might think from the pictures. Many thanks. Love the belt!
Fantastic quality, THE BEST belt in the world, thanks Saddleback, it's a winner!
I've been buying Saddleback products for 5 or 6 years now. Consistent with everyone else, I'm always greatly satisfied. I'm a 6ft 300lb 42-44inch waist guy that is always harsh on pants, belts and wallets. I own Saddleback leather products in two of those three categories.
I've had the Old Bull Belt for about 18 months now. I got it for Christmas, 2012. The only differences between when it was new and now is that it has a slight curve (a-la my belly) and it's not quite as stiff as it once was. I wear this thing EVERY DAY. It is rock solid. I still have a hard time believing there was an animal out there with hide this thick. I brag on it constantly and show it off to anyone who doesn't think it weird that I'm taking my belt off.
Like I said, I'm very tough on belts, I may yet take Dave up on his 100 year warranty, however, when that day comes (not anytime soon BTW), It'll be a tough decision between sending it back or framing it and purchasing another.
Over the last year, through a friend in the US, I have already purchased a tow belt and a medium bi-fold wallet. After I set up my own account last week, got the old bull belt. All excellent quality and just as described. Best leather products I have ever purchased. Now I want a backpack. Cannot recommend more highly.
I've had my Old Bull for a bit over a week and absolutely love it so far! Love the thickness of it and the obvious quality of the leather. The spacing of the holes works great and makes a huge difference in the comfort of the belt to me - just as Dave describes in his video. I'm one of those guys that loves for my belt to fit so my pants are snug and my shirt stays tucked in. That has caused other belts to wear out quickly for me. This one definitely seems up to the task for a long time. This belt is actually my first Saddleback product but it definitely won't be my last!
I bought the old bull and the tow belt. Tow belt is great love it! The old bull belt not so much, the unfinished back side shreds like crazy, leaving pieces of leather all over the place. Because of the shredding I also get a lot of dye transfer onto whatever I am wearing. The painted edges have also chipped away on most parts of the belt. I had the old bull belt about 8 months. It has aged very poorly. Seriously doubt this will last a hundred years.
Interesting story... Bought this belt last month and it may have saved my life. I was walking around the streets of Philly the other night with my girlfriend when I was confronted by a homeless man with a knife. I was more concerned about the girl I was with, she was wearing high heels and was in no condition to run or really defend herself. Had I been alone, I think I would have just jumped him or ran off. So I complied and started to reach for my pocket to get my wallet when all of a sudden, he makes a move toward the girl I was with. Without a thought, I went for my belt (The Old Bull) and whipped it off. It was almost like a scene from Indiana Jones with his whip. When I did, it cracked so loud that the man jumped back and was physically shaken. I looked at him, clutching the belt in my hand ready to beat the hell out of him if he tried it again. Instead, he stood there and said, "I think I've made a mistake, please don't call the police." He started walking away, and I called the police.
Loooking back, I don't doubt this belt could have done some serious damage to that guy. it's solid, looks good, and will last me forever. Hopefully I won't have many more stories like this but knowing my luck, I probably will. This belt will be there though to make sure they all have happy endings! >=)
