"... Saddleback Leather no longer discriminates against any cow on the basis of age, appearance, lactose intolerance... if the beast has a natural marking or brand, or whether or not they worship the Divine Bovine."
Truth is, sometimes beauty is only skin deep... like with cows. Their poetry is notoriously terrible, but man, their hides are nature's art. We don't believe that flawlessness equals beauty. Beauty is when we're able to see something as it really is.
This is true with humans too. There are lots of quality people who are really beautiful not in spite of, but because of the marks life has given them.
So, in the morning, as we three, clean-cut smiley white guys emerged from the cheap hotel, everybody looked at us with suspicion. The government suspected us of bringing money to or training the rebels and the rebels thought we were government spies. Why else would any sober gringo carrying a leather briefcase visit Ocosingo? Unless, of course, it’s just where the last truck we hitched a ride with dropped us off?
But it was a morbidly interesting place with the relatively fresh bullet holes and anti-government messages of the rebels on the walls. Only a few years back, Ocosingo was the site of a major bloodbath where about 150 Zapatistas and Mexican soldiers were killed in a firefight, some found shot in the back of the head after surrendering. Tensions were still high. One could make an argument for it being the least touristy town on Earth. So, shortly after our silent breakfast, we headed out.
But the cool thing was, Ocosingo wasn’t far from where we wanted to be. The massive Mayan ruins of Palenque were breathtaking, and if you looked into the jungle you could see the majority of the ruins still unexcavated.
And then when we got to the jungle waterfalls of Las Cascadas de Agua Azul, we grabbed a vine, hacked it and used it as a rope swing into the river, tarzan style. The place was amazing as the clear blue river stepped down for miles creating a series of huge waterfalls. It was my original briefcase’s first big trip of many, but it easily could have been its last.
I was sick of spending too much on wallets that only lasted a couple years. I got the small Bi-fold and love it. Nice and thin but with plenty of space for my stuff. Love the carbon color. Only problem is now my belt looks terrible next to it and needs to be replaced. I can't say enough good things about this Wallet. Definitely a must have. I do wish it had the pig skin on both sides of the money pocket so the bills slipped in easier, but that is not a complaint.
This is awesome

Small bifold wallet
by Frank | 7/16/2015 6:24 pm
I received my small bifold a few day ago. My medium size wallet was stolen which contained everything. I felt stupid and targeted. I got a police case number and made phone calls and online notifications to protect my identity. Saddleback is an awesome company with excellent leather product and outstanding customer service. The small bifold is perfect as I now carry the wallet in the front pocket.
First Purchase and I am a convert.
by anonymous | 7/16/2015 6:23 pm
I have been looking at this site since the bifold wallet was recommended in a copy of money sense magazine up here in the great white North (or in other words a very long time). I finally took the plunge and purchased a small bifold wallet for myself and a long Trifold wallet for my wife.
We love them and expect to make many more purchases in the future as we replace our current items for saddleback leather quality.
If your like me and use just cards and the occasional cash to navigate through life, then you will be very pleased with the small bifold wallet. All my cards fit nicely and they are incredibly easy to access. I enjoy the small footprint of space that the wallet occupies in my pocket. Like I said earlier, I am a convert.

Don’t think twice, just buy it.

Bought a small bifold wallet in tobacco. Simply love it. Beautifully made - worth every penny. Haven’t seen a wallet as well made here in Britain. Will be saving up to buy more saddleback stuff, it’s well worth it even with the international shipping.
Best wallet I've ever had.
by anonymous | 7/16/2015 6:23 pm
It started when I opened the box and the strong leather scent hit me. I knew I had something good. It looked good new but now that I've had some time to break it in, it looks fantastic. I got the small and it is exactly what I was looking for. I will definitely be buying Saddleback in the future.
Best Wallet Ever!

I have a few of Dave's items (including the credit card wallet) but moved to a city where cash is used more often than credit cards, so it was time to get a new wallet.
I am still amazed at the quality of Saddleback Leather's products. The wallet fits everything I need it to (small bifold) and fits easily in my front pocket.
Thanks for making another great product! I'll be buying more soon.
Awesome Wallet, Awesome Company
by Eric - verified purchaser | 1/5/2016 3:11 pm
I stumbled upon this awesome company just a few weeks ago when browsing the internet for a "good leather wallet" and let me tell you, the people that recommended this on various sites/forums were not lying. I told my parents to get me this small bifold wallet since I was struggling to think of a Christmas gift idea that they could get me that wouldn't break the bank. I opened this (knowingly) on Christmas and was still amazed at how great this is. Holds all my cards I need (debit, credit, gym card, drivers, and gun permit) and should hold 10-12 bills comfortably. I rarely carry cash so this small size is great for me. The quality is excellent and the smell is great. I see why they say "they'll fight over it when you're dead" for their products. I love it!
On a side note, I have since ordered the Simple Leather Tote for my mother and the Medium Bifold Wallet as well to compare to the small to see which I prefer. All are excellent quality and the small fits my needs better - not many cards, rarely carry cash.
What smell?
by anonymous | 7/16/2015 6:24 pm
Products:
Small Bifold in DCB
Medium Macbook Pro sleeve in DCB
Pros:
Look great
Feel great
Work great
Cons:
These pieces smell nothing like leather to my nose. It's more of a vinyl/plastic synthetic scent, and it's pretty intense at first. I guess it's the die (could be a DCB thing). If someone put a blindfold on my eyes and one of these pieces under my nose, I would not guess that they were leather. The smell fades quickly with use, so it's not a showstopper.
On the flip side, nobody else seems to have made this observation so it could be that I am crazy or do not know what actual leather is supposed to smell like ;)
True Quality

I just bought the Small Tobacco Bifold and I couldn't be more pleased. I've used Saddleback before and have been meaning to buy a wallet for a couple of years and finally pulled the trigger. Let me just say thanks to Dave and the rest of the Saddleback team for their attention to quality and detail. This wallet I'm holding in my hand is top notch leather with excellent thickness and stitching. It's breaking in nicely after only three days and is already aging beautifully like a fine wine. To anyone who may read this review to aid his or her decision, my advice is go for it. This product is absolutely worth the money. I'll be a customer for life! - Ethan
Small Bifold Wallet
by Makewar | 7/16/2015 6:24 pm
As soon as I opened the package I saw the small (and relatively thin) bifold wallet. The leather was beautiful and the "build" is solid and it feels every bit as durable as promised. I only have 6 cards (3 on each side) and they fit perfectly. It feels nice in the pocket (back pocket for me) and is small enough that I could use in the front if I needed to. I am extremely happy with my purchase and look forward to buying more Saddleback Leather products.
Small Bifold is Perfect
by anonymous | 7/16/2015 6:24 pm
The small bifold is perfect, I think. Sturdy but nice and slim. It's breaking in nicely and is about 7/16 of an inch thick with 7 cards in it (no cash). It's starting to taper down really nicely on the sides and is very comfortable in my back pocket. It looks to me like the inside and card slot leather is thinner than older photos that I've seen online which is an upgrade as far as I'm concerned, as long as it hold up just as well. Based on what I've seen so far I'm not worried at all! Thanks Saddleback!
Small bifold - DCB
by Keith | 7/16/2015 6:24 pm
I ordered this wallet along with an ID wallet (Carbon), a tote and wallet for the GF, and the list is continuing! I carry a wallet in my front pocket due to back issues and needed something that would not look too bulky considering I stack my smartphone below it in my left front pants pocket (my keys, chapstick and change in the other). I wavered between this and the Medium bifold and pulled the trigger on this one. It is the perfect choice and not too bulky, even when combined with my phone in my jeans or Dickies pockets. This wallet is extremely well made. It has heft and impeccable build quality, yet is not too stiff and won't require a painful break-in. I hold three cards in each side along with paper medical & dental cards, 2 car registrations and 2 insurance cards. There is room for more cards. As is, the wallet closes flat when sitting on my nightstand (without break-in) and the cards on both sides don't even come in contact with each other when closed (I know some people have had concerns with card breakage in other older designs). I don't see how this can possibly be an issue with this wallet.
DCB wasn't my first choice in colors but Tobacco wasn't available at the time. This is a nice rich color (very dark). I do prefer colors that stand out a bit more and have ordered the Small Bifold in Tobacco. I will not kick my DCB wallet to the curb and will likely switch between the two, along with my ID Wallet in Carbon. I like having a variety to chose from and tend to collect nice things such as these. One thing I know for sure is that all of my Saddleback products will outlast me!
Small Bifold - Best Wallet I've Ever Bought
by anonymous | 7/16/2015 6:24 pm
I bought this wallet because I was tired of paying $30 every few years for a wallet that had good leather but fabric lining that would always tear.
Best $50 I've ever spent. (Well... except for the time I went to Vegas and turned $50 into a lot more.) First, the design is fantastic. There's no better way to keep your cards safe than having their pockets face the bend of the wallet. Second, this thick and durable. When it was brand spankin new, it was difficult to shove bills into the crease, but after a year and a half, it's more pliable, and I've been able to stuff thirty bills into it.
What you should know:
1) It starts off stiff, so anticipate carrying fewer bills until you break it in.
2) It will slowly bend your credit cards. They'll still work, but if you plan on using them as coasters once they've expired, the coasters won't be flat.
3) The card pockets will stretch. I don't think this makes much of a difference since the cards have no way of escaping your wallet unless if you decide to hold the wallet opened and shake it.
Oh, and I got it for my brother in law in black (mine is chestnut) and he loves his. Hell yes I'd recommend this product.
Small Bifold Wallet-Chestnut
by Hombre1 | 7/16/2015 6:24 pm
I bought the "Small Bi-fold Wallet-Chestnut". My chiropractor told me never to use a wallet in my back pocket. This one fits fine in my front pocket. I've read that other people use the med bi-fold as a front pocket wallet as well but I think that would be stretching it for me. I'm very pleased with the small size, it holds all I need. The chestnut color on my wallet is not a perfect match to the color of my "Front Pocket Backpack-Chestnut” and my "Old Bull Belt 1 3/4-Chestnut" my wallet's color is lighter. But I do like the color. The inside where the bills go in, one side has liner and the other does not. The side without liner is rough and has loose leather strands/fibers. I'm not sure if it will smooth out with time. The wallet has a solid and stiff feel to it which I like, because I know I will be breaking it in with use. The smell of my wallet is nice but not as nice as my backpack's, they have different leather aromas. I don't know why but all 3 of my leather pieces smell different. Overall I love this wallet and I know it is going to last a very long time...
Reliable and High Quality
by Dom | 7/16/2015 6:24 pm
I have the small bifold. This is a great wallet! I've had it since Christmas 2012 and it has softened a lot and darkened slightly, and it looks great. I have 3 cards in each pocket at the moment and they fit easily. I just checked and I could squeeze all 6 into the one pocket. so if you have lots of cards it will still fit them all. Its very thin as well, so it doesn't really stick out in my pocket. Mine has been in a bag with wet gear and dried out as though it didn't happen. I've taken it daily to school for a year and 4 months and it's still going well!

One year in, still a beautiful piece

Received my Small dark coffee brown bifold a year ago and is in amazing condition due to the quality, robust material. The stitching is perfect and hasn't frayed or loosened what so ever.
I prefer to travel light, so I opted for the small and I do not regret my decision at all. I carry four cards, a few business cards and a few notes. The size means the wallet sits comfortably in any pocket, whether jeans, joggers or shorts. Only snag is the cash notes I carry are too tall for the wallet and stick out the top slightly (I live in UK, England), this leads me to fold my notes. I don't mind this small trade for the amazing quality (and customer service) I got from this company.
Since the time of buying this wallet I have also bought a Hobo Crossbody for my mother as a gift - just as excellent, loves it.

I purchased the small bifold in tobacco a few months ago, it is a great addition to my edc. It's comfortable, it holds all I need it to hold, and I absolutely LOVE how the tobacco looks over time. I would highly recommend this product for anyone looking for a quality wallet that's just the right size, and quality well worth the price. Since purchasing I find I am constantly telling people about the quality products offered by saddleback, and its refreshing to find a company that will not cut corners in their final product!
Love it.

I got my small bifold today. It is awesome. I was on the hunt for "my" wallet for years. I bought wallets all over the world. In Germany, Italy, Cyprus, Spain and France. I wasn't able to find a wallet I wanted to keep for longer than a year. I'm sure I found it with the Saddleback wallet. It already looks amazing and has more character to it than every wallet I ever owned before. I ordered it in Tabacco Brown and can't wait to see the patina.
Best wallet I've ever owned!

I just received my small bifold in chestnut to replace my lost medium bifold. I love the quality and craftsmanship. It is second to none. While I hated losing my medium bifold I replaced it with the small because I wanted something a bit lower profile. I am so glad I did and I couldn't be happier! Saddleback is exactly the type of company I love to support. They represent top of line with no compromises. Keep up the great work!
Best Wallet EVER!

My girlfriend gave me the small bifold as an early xmas gift. My first thoughts when I took it out of the packaging were "WOW"! The stitching is VERY durable, it appears to be sewn with nylon thread, the wallet is thick and looks very robust. It's quite small. It dissapears in my pocket. Thank you Saddleback Leather!
Best Ever!!!

I have bought and used the i.d. wallet, large, medium, and small bi-fold. The quality of the leather is outstanding! After using each wallet for a year I have decided That my small tobacco brown bi-fold is "my" wallet. The size and color is amazing and it definitely gets better with age.
I have gifted my small black bi-fold to my 16 year old son who has been using the wallet for 2 years and he loves it!
I also gave my coffee brown i.d. wallet to my 19 year old daughter and she loves it as well!
I use my other large and medium coffee brown bi-folds for credit cards and business cards that I don't need to carry everyday.
My cousin saw our wallets and immediately bought a large and medium bi-fold in carbon black.
I just purchased a black tow belt for work since I need a sturdy belt for my holster...can't wait!
Absolutely Love It

This is my first purchase from Saddleback. I bought a small bifold wallet since my old one was wearing out, and I got the small one because I mainly just use a card to make purchases. I love the design and the quality of Saddleback. I will definitely return for future purchases.
Natural Marking
We wanted to let you know that this was recently added to the cow hand hoof-book, in the section governing acceptable hides:
"...Saddleback Leather no longer discriminates against any cow on the basis of age, appearance, lactose intolerance...if the beast has a natural marking or brand, or whether or not they worship the Divine Bobine."
Truth is, sometimes beauty is only skin deep...like with cows.
Leather is special because it's durable, natural, and it tells a story about a cow's life. Maybe the leather in your bag was from a real Casanova. Maybe he got tipped a lot. Maybe the bulls really liked the way she moooved. We don't know for sure, but we want you to see those stories and add your own as you carry your bag around.
Just to be clear, some leather definitely does not make the cut, but a lot of what has been rejected in the past for being too naturally beautiful, will.
We cut the nasty looking marks out and throw them away and the cool or insignificant ones we leave. When you want to know what the story is behind one of the marks on your leather, look it up here.
Stretch Marks
Marbly lines generally regarded as not cool marks on mothers, unless the mother is a cow or pig and then they're more than cool.
Stretch marks appear when the animal grows quickly or gets really fat for a time in life for some reason.
Veins
The veins and stretch marks are what give the leather that cool marbled look.
Did you know that if they slaughter a cow in the winter in a place where it's really really cold, that it'll have more pronounced veins because the blood rises closer to the surface to keep them warm.
Wrinkles
Almost all thick leather wrinkles when it is bent back on itself. Kind of like when you squat down in a pair of leather shoes and wrinkles appear about 4" from the toe.
Insect Bites
These pesky insects don't leave cows alone either. Ticks, mosquitoes and other bug bites show themselves as a tiny black or white spot.
You ever see birds sitting on top of cows? They're filling their craws with these bugs.
Pores
It's common to see very fine holes on leather if you look closely. Cows have hair too and if it isn't completely removed in the initial tanning process then you'll see them.
Scars
Itching oneself against or running scared through barbed wire, mesquite bushes or cactus will cause long thin black lines. If the bulls liked the way the cow moooved, then she'll get hoof marks which are usually up to an inch wide and a few inches long.
The bigger scars happen when they got gored or kicked hard. Two small single black scars not far apart are often bat bites. Those are found on cows in more jungly areas.
Callouses
If a cow sleeps on it's right side for years or has a habit of rubbing one spot with his horns or any kind of regular friction in one place, you get a callous.
These markings are usually smooth, not raised, small and circular in shape.
Brands
The mark of a cow well loved. Brands can be shapes, letters and numbers. We only use the nice and smooth healed up ones.
In third world countries, some ranchers don't have enough money to buy a branding iron, so they heat up a piece of iron and draw a picture on the cow. Whatever's clever, right?
Which leather is better, the old or the new?
The "new" leather is the same quality as the "old" leather. We just stopped letting some of the cooler marks fall onto the cutting room floor.
Will the scars and marks hurt the construction?
Nope. Any mark or scar that is possibly weaker than other areas, we cut out and throw away.
Are the animals tortured before they are slaughtered?
Absolutely not!!! With some pigs, we do use waterboarding and sensory deprivation techniques previous to slaughtering them, but cows do not require any special handling.
What if I want a lot of marks?
If you don't get lots of marks, please don't return it in hopes of the next one having more. But hopefully, the Divine Bovine will smile upon you and you'll receive a bag that tells a cool story. If it doesn't have a lot of story on it, then you'll have to add your own by using it hard.
What if I don't want any marks?
Not all cows live hard lives and so not all hides have a lot of scars. If you order Carbon or Coffee, the thin or small scars won't stand out much. They show up nicely on Tobacco though. People who like the Chestnut color (red/brown) seem to like more perfect leather and we're very aware of that. It's not right or wrong; just a preference. Generally, we cut the big scars out of the chestnut leather, but there will always be a few here and there. If you get your bag and you really don't like it, send it back and we'll take care of you. We're not worried in the slightest. And remember, it's not the scars that make the bag, it's the bag. The marks just add to it.
Can I get Chestnut and Coffee with cool marks?
The amount of markings on Chestnut will be less than on other colors because we cut more of the bigger scars out of that leather. We know that, in general, Chestnut people aren't too big on large scars. Marks tend to blend in with the Coffee, but you'll still see them.
Are some scars more valuable, or sought after than others?
Yes. Absolutely! For example, most of our designs have pigskin interiors, which generally have a smooth matte quality. Often, these pieces will have a scrape or scar-type marking on it. These are, in fact, scars associated with the romantic life of the pig. More than most other animals, the pig is known for its violent mating behaviors and is aggressive, selfish and generally demeaning to its female partner. The male pig bites, scratches, gouges and anything else he can think of to have his way (in some rare cases pigs have been known to use other strategies, like cleaning the pigpen, bringing flowers, showing kindness to her relatives, etc,). Thus, many female pigs, at least the desirable ones, are pretty scarred-up. In the pig culture, this is a sign of status. The best hides for our purposes (i.e. creating the best leather bag possible) are the female hides because they are so much larger than the males and therefore we can get larger solid pieces (and girls just have better skin). Therefore, our pigskin will sometimes have various scarring patterns. We refer to these as 'love scars'.
How will this affect my warranty?
This won't have any effect on an existing warranty or a new warranty.
Why haven't you done this before?
Saddleback started and grew strong exactly because of allowing scars and marks and brands on our leather. It's what made us into who we are today. The marks became less and less frequent since the people cutting the leather didn't understand why anyone would want leather with imperfections. So, they thought they were helping us and and it just kind of stayed that way until now.
If you are using more of the leather per hide, will the price go down?
The marks and scars have always represented a very small amount of leather. And actually, the bags now may cost us more since the leather cutters spend extra time placing various scars and brands, which they didn't do before.
Can I see what it will look like before I buy it since this makes the leather so much different from bag to bag?
We have some pictures of the sorts of marks that might be on your bag, but we don't have shots of every piece. We wouldn't ever send out something that we wouldn't send to our own mom and dad. You'll love what you get.
Is this truly cooler leather or are you just trying to save some money on cheaper hides?
I'm pretty sure that if you ask anyone who's been watching Saddleback for any length of time, they'll tell you that we're not so much about the money as we are about creating things that bring people joy. It's art and it's quality and we just like it. It makes us happy. And don't forget, Saddleback has a steady history of constantly improving quality in design and materials. There have been several changes to designs that cost us more money to make, but that we did for no other reason than to raise the quality bar. It just seems like the right thing to do. So, to go against everything that we are known for, stand for and teach would be really inconsistent and pretty risky too. And the hides are the same expensive quality hides that we've used for years, but we're just not cutting out as many of the stories.
If this is so great--as you say--why are you the only ones doing this?
I suspect that other companies think that nobody would like it and they're not willing to take the risk to learn if it's true or not. Also, there are so many variables in the marks and scars on each hide that it's very difficult to teach a person which ones to cut out and which ones to leave. It could get very expensive if the cutters aren't trained well and they allowed some of those nasty looking lumpy scars onto the bags.
Can I still buy the old style if I just don't like this change?
Once we're out, we're out, but surely you'll be able to find some on eBay as people are wanting to sell theirs so they can buy one of these.
Will the colors be different?
Tobacco and Carbon are different, but Coffee and Chestnut are the same.
Is the leather going to feel different besides just looking different?
It's the same leather with a different look.
I bought a Tobacco bag 6 months ago but now I want this new Tobacco. Can I trade?
I would suggest that you either sell yours on eBay, which you may get more for, or you look into aging your bag more rapidly. Get on Youtube to see techniques on how to age leather. Remember you loved that bag enough to buy it. You may be pleasantly surprised. The only difference between this tobacco and our last tobacco is the amount of clear and natural oils and waxes on the hide.
