"... Saddleback Leather no longer discriminates against any cow on the basis of age, appearance, lactose intolerance... if the beast has a natural marking or brand, or whether or not they worship the Divine Bovine."

Truth is, sometimes beauty is only skin deep... like with cows. Their poetry is notoriously terrible, but man, their hides are nature's art. We don't believe that flawlessness equals beauty. Beauty is when we're able to see something as it really is.

This is true with humans too. There are lots of quality people who are really beautiful not in spite of, but because of the marks life has given them.

So we were heading to go on safari when we came across a small Masai village in the cold highlands of Tanzania. I had heard about how even the lions were afraid of them and so I couldn’t wait to experience the people myself. I first became fascinated by the fierce and fabled Masai warriors when my dad read H. Rider Haggard’s books, Allan Quatermain and King Solomon’s Mines, to me at bedtime as a child. Looking back, those books were more influential than I was aware. This was a treat indeed.

Daniel, the only English speaking warrior, went on to explain that over the centuries, lions, leopards, hyenas and other animals had become painfully aware that when you hear the jingling of small metal ornaments or smelled the Masai oils or saw someone in red garb, it was time to go the other direction. To not, meant to death by spear.

Of course, you’d expect that they would also be good at throwing spears, because isn’t that what you do with a spear anyways? But I learned that wasn’t always the truth. Daniel told me that they only threw spears at lions when the warriors were together. Because if you’re by yourself and you miss the target, the lion won’t. Made sense to me.

So, out of curiosity, I set up a little contest with my backpack to see how good these guys really were. They loved the idea and we all had a really great time laughing and watching and learning and throwing spears. It’s times like this that create memories that stick with you for life. Every time I look at the spear holes through my backpack, I fondly remember the time with the Masai. I was so glad that we stopped, and trust me when I say, they were too.

That holey backpack that inspired this Squared Backpack carries a lot. It carries the memories of spears and laughter and a bunch of other good times around the world, more than I can recount. And I still carry it, not just because it’s nice and broken in and it draws a lot of compliments, but because it’s kind of become part of my life. If you get one, the more you use it and dare to step out of your comfort zone, the more yours will carry too. If you’d like to see the spear throwing contest, click here.

Great backpack - I got mine as a Dave's Deal. I love using it to bring all of my gear to a friend's garage when we have some projects to work on. I usually pack a pair of junk trousers and a junk long sleeved shirt, a portable speaker for music, my ipad (in a gadget sleeve), a large bottle of water, my keys, wallet, and phone, flip flops, and my cable pouch that has a bunch of smaller items that I transfer from bag to bag. And there is still plenty of room to spare! My only issue is that the metal ring at the bottom portion of the shoulder strap rubs me and it becomes uncomfortable after a period of time. That said, I haven't fully broken in the backpack, so it is possible that this will become a non-issue as it softens up. If I could give it 4.5 stars, I would - and if the rubbing subsides I would upgrade to a 5. :)

    Possibly the best backpack ever!

I'm 21 years old and am happy to say this is the last bag I will need to buy. It is perfect, the pictures and YouTube videos do not do justice. The bag is amazing in person. I purchased this bag in dark coffee brown and it is beautiful! It will take a few weeks to break in the straps, so be patient. Other then that, it's perfect.

    A Backpack for Life

    by - verified purchaser |
I've had the Dark Tobacco backpack for about a year now. I can honestly say that for backpacks, it's the best investment that you could ever make. I was originally worried about what my wife would say, but I was going through a backpack a year anyway and she's now happy that we don't have to spend money on them anymore! There's an old saying...you get what you pay for. In this case it's true. I will have to buy my son one however because in our case he doesn't want to wait until I'm dead to have it! Thanks!

    Great Backpack, Great Company

    by |
I purchased this backpack for trips where my classic briefcase just isn't big enough, and this bag fits my needs perfectly...well, actually, it exceeds them. This has proven perfect for carrying computers, cameras, and clothes and is my go-to travel partner for business trips with a couple of overnights. It fits great as a carry-on and gets compliments everywhere I go. I love the backpack and can't recommend it highly enough...but what I love even more is being part of the SBL family. They're great people who do great things and, after this bag, I'm looking for excuses to buy more from them!

Solid Oak, Stainless Steel and Saddleback leather!!

    by - verified purchaser |
Like all quality items in life the Saddleback products stand alone and cannot be compared to any similar product. I ordered the backpack and was in total shock when I opened the package! I expected a quality bag but I was surprised to see the trophy like product. The bag demands your attention and you absolutely must touch the leather. At 72 years old I have purchased lots of product in my life but have never been more pleased and satisfied. I just wished I would have had this when I was piloting in the world theater as baggage was extremely valuable and necessary. My only problem with the bag is deciding which Grandbaby to leave it to as it will have at least a couple of years left on the 100 year warranty when I am through using it!!

    More spacious than you think

    by - verified purchaser |
This is the first product review I've ever made. To start, I own the large suitcase, large waterbag, duffle, beast, large briefcase, large wallet, desk pads, and this backpack. All in coffee brown. I only wish these products were available when I was younger and living overseas in China, Pakistan, UK, and Russia. I purchased these products in anticipation for my next adventure. I use each one of them except the suitcase and beast which sit in my living room, "waiting their turn". As for the backpack. I think this backpack is much sturdier than the others SB sells. It was very stiff and "boxy" when I purchased it and I know people question the size. However, I broke it in with kettlebells and weights on long hikes. I also filled the pockets with items that stretched the leather and increased the size considerably. I put a large first aid kit in the front pocket and it stretched to around 4 times its original size. All 3 pockets now bulge (nicely) and make the pack look like a traditional one. I debated placing the pockets in a hot water bath for ease of stretching but for now I am holding off. During my long walks I recieve many compliments, mainly from really young people who want to know where I got it. So the bottom line of this review is not to count this pack out due to storage capabilities. Stretching is easily accomplished. If you have the courage, select items you would like your pack size to be, dip your entire bag in a hot bath, immediately insert your items into the pockets, etc and watch them easily stretch. Word of warning, there is no going back on the stretch if you do this. When the bag is wet and filled/stretched, let it dry. A hot day will help. I know this technique is not for everyone and the thought of leather and water will not sit well with everyone, but it works. Once it dries, you can condition it as you see fit. Who knows, Dave may read this and not even post it because I recommend soaking one of his beautiful bags.

    Attention Grabber

    by - verified purchaser |
I have traveled across the globe with this backpack. China, Cambodia, Thailand, UAE, Afghanistan and more. I must say this is a bullet proof bag that is always with me pretty much every day of my life for the past several years. She carries everything I need and I will never need another carry on/computer bag again!

One thing that happens all the time is how many people stop me in the airport to compliment me on the bag and ask where I got it. I almost wish I had a way to track how many of the hundreds actually went and got gear from Saddleback.

I now have several Saddleback items and am contemplating my next buy. Thanks for making such a great line of products

    A fleeting Glimpse! Part One

    by - verified purchaser |
My Birthday is not for 2 weeks! The package arrived early though and because I let my wife touch her "Love 41" bag 2 weeks before her birthday I was given permission to take one fleeting glimpse and a very little touch (of the bag not the wife) as well.

Now I'm lost and confused, for just a moment I felt somehow complete a whole person at last but then it went back into the box until my birthday.

I now sit at my computer looking at the photo's on the saddleback site. It's like looking at someone else's wedding photo's!

Ok, I'm not that tragic, but I can't wait till my birthday to start packing my new backpack. By the way, the moment you open the box, the leather smell fills the room.

I'll write again when I open it for the last time.

    Give it Time

    by - verified purchaser |
I'm thinking, "time, give me time, give me one more moment in time...," but I digress and I know, I know the last thing you want is to hear me sing--even if it is just in my own head.

When I first recieved this bag, I was like--MAN, this bag is huge! It was days before a trip oversees and I just didn't have the time and inclination to return it for something smaller. I, then, therefore decided to risk it and try my luck hoping the airline agents wouldn't bark at its heft and try to check it. In the end, all my worries came to naught as I seemlessly navigated my way through terminal to terminal and the Squared Backpack and me triumphed through our voyage and its christening as a world traveller.

It's been weeks now since that rocky introduction like two lonely souls meeting apprehensively for the first time and turning into a love that is genuine and timeless.

Okay, okay...you don't want me to muse on romance either? I hear ya', this stuff turns my stomach too. My point is, after the intitial breaking in period of a few weeks, what was once cumbersome, uncomfortable and unweildy has morphed into a different animal. This bag now feels like it was custom made for my back. It now comforms to the curves--and man do I have manly curves--of my back. It is a true pleasure to carry. In fact, I am now noticing that I'm adopting narcissisistic tendencies losing myself in time and gazing in deep admiration at myself, er--the bag, before mirrors.

Thanks Saddleback team for introducing us, we will send you a pic of our first child. Loving her, Peter C.

    Unbelievably good.

    by - verified purchaser |
Obviously the bag looks great, and is sturdy, but I was astonished about just how much stuff I could fit into it, even before cramming.

I was originally worried about whether the bag would be large enough for my needs, whether it would have enough variety of compartments to sort different items, and whether it would be comfortable.

Now that I have the bag, I can fit every thing from my old backpack, plus extras, and I could still get a little creative with the space to pack a spare shirt or shorts on occasion. The interior pockets, are more than enough to sort odds and ends, and the straps are way more comfortable than I anticipated - though I haven't worn the pack for long periods of time yet.

I will be needing a few small pouches to sort a few things, but that's just the Boy Scout in me wanting to be over prepared. I might even buy a cable bag (or two) to help me sort things for the main pouch.

Honestly, I can't say enough nice things about this bag.

    Amazing "Do It All" Bag!

    by |
I must say that I am very impressed with my Squared Backpack! I have had my bag for 4 months now and I am loving it more and more as time goes by.

I love the two "hidden pockets" behind the two side pockets. It makes it so much easier when taking things that require quick access (You don't want to be the guy holding up the line opening up your bag). I use those hidden pockets everyday!

This should go without saying, but I love this backpack because it is a backpack! I have had other Saddleback Bags before and this backpack seems to be able to live a double life of work and play! I have the Chestnut color and it seems to fit in regardless of it being taking to a suit & tie meeting, hiking and taking a trip to the mall. I also like that as a backpack all the weight is distributed across my whole back and not just one shoulder.

I have used this bag daily for back and forth to work. I have also taken it on mission trips through the church. I can load it up or rock it light; either way I look forward to using this amazing "Do It ALL" Bag.

    thanks,
    Be Encouraged :-)

First Contact : Day one with the Squared Backpack first review right out of the box

    by |
Man there is no substitute for quality! what you see and were told about on the website about the bag's premium leather materials, construction, reinforcement and fit and finish is EXACTLY what I got!!. I have had many bags from many different leather product makers and NONE of them even began to approach the world class quality of this bag. I got my first compliment from some one at Starbucks who was sitting across the room drinking his coffee while I was drinking mine and looking at the shipping and receipt paperwork. The backpack is still in its plastic shipping bag and the man puts down his coffee and approaches me and said"
Man that's a beautiful bag you got there ,looks like Christmas came early for you!" I told the man "Thanks I am happy with my new bag, its a gift to myself (I have been good all year!!) the man starts laughing and I tell him I saw it on the internet at Saddlebackleather.com. I was amazed to see someone comment on a bag that was still wrapped in heavy plastic, goes to show that quality is ALWAYS in fashion!! This bag is what I have been looking for for years, it will be my all around bag, my briefpack my funpack and of course backpack and the bag has tons of style, it a WIN/WIN , great durability , quality components, extremely high sewing and reinforcements at all points of possible stress and looks great!!! I am very happy I bought this bag! and if your out there on the fence trying to decide weather you want to invest in a very high quality leather bag that will be around for a very long time, this is the bag and company that has all the right stuff!!!!

    They keep on getting better

    by - verified purchaser |
Just received my squared backpack in tobacco. This is the best so far and I have been using a medium front pocket backpack for two years, which was very practical, but this is the ultimate. If you value quality and something that is really usable, then this is the backpack to have. Comfortably fits a huge amount of kit, either for office or just general travelling. Easy to pack and has a solid feel that protects everything inside. Great quality and well worth the price.

    It's a beast!

    by |
After everyone telling me how awesome their first generation Tank backpacks are, I decided to give the sibling squared backpack a try. This thing is a BEAST. I took it for its first spin out to the supermarket to see whether or not I could fit most of a week's groceries in it and I could, with just a few items to spare. It's a lot bigger than the photos suggest (see Dave's video for more accurate size reference) and feels very nice on the back....until you've got a 20 lbs. of groceries in it. I found that the straps, while they seem better designed than the old Tank straps, pull harshly on my shoulders. I expect that's a "new leather" issue, and not an issue with the bag. The neoprene patch near the bottom edge of the bag didn't do a whole lot to ease my discomfort either, but I again expect this is an issue with it being brand spanking new. With lighter loads, it felt a lot better.

Comes with the quality you should expect from Saddleback. Big enough to pack a few days worth of clothes in and have room in the spare pockets for extras. Front pocket under the flap is useful for notebooks, computers, even packages of prosciutto! But if you're looking for a pack with a little more diversity and a multi-day functionality, I would go with the front pocket.

    URBAN HIKER

    by - verified purchaser |
I have the Squared Backpack in chestnut and absolutely love it. It's my daily carry bag. I have had it for six months now and my love affair with this bag is still fresh as morning dew on fluttering daffodils in the breeze (thanks Willy) . It is something that you may love too if you are looking for a casual type of bag that can carry a good amount of stuff that has an urban and sophisticated air about it--think Crocodile Dundee in a corner office or "I think I'll spend the day hiking Manhattan." Some people bellyache that this bag is too heavy, but I think this is the trade off of having a bag that is much more durable and manly than the so called "European" styles--Seinfeld comes to mind. I for one, although a proper metrosexual male, do not take pride in my effeminate stylings, so I appreciate this masculine, functional, and fashionable accessory. Concerning its weight, I posit that this issue is easily forgotten to the fact that once this bag is broken in--quickly I might add--it feels very comfortable. The organic material of leather seems to hug my back. One final thought, concerning the straps at the top opening of the bag, I suggest simply removing them as I have done with my bag. I have seen one review of this bag where the Squared Backpack in the review developed a "lean" to it in the sitting position--I feel that this "lean" was a result of the straps pulling and folding the top of the bag in an asymmetrical manner (if you aren't anal retentive like me just ignore this part). I have no issue with water entering the bag as the front cover does a more than adequate job of keeping rainwater out. Instead, I loop the strap around a corner D-ring and use it as a key holder with a carabiner style clip. HAPPY URBAN HIKING.

    Best Saddleback Product

    by - verified purchaser |
This backpack is, I think, the best product Saddleback sells. It fits my outdoorsy personality yet I use it for business most every day. Why be typical and carry a briefcase (although Saddleback's are awesome)? I choose to rage against the machine and carry this quality piece of man-bag instead. A whole lotta cow must of been used to make this ample-sized backpack. I've owned the old, original, discontinued backpack that this one was modeled after, and this one is far better. It holds a ton of gear but isn't overly huge or too stiff. The weight is just fine, and it's comfortable to carry. I use this when I go camping, to the office, or traveling. All-around great bag that is fun to carry. Quality is the best.

    Backpack with Character!

    by - verified purchaser |
A great pack that will last a lifetime and then some. This pack is great for the office or for traveling. I researched before I purchased and knew what to expect. The pack is everything I hoped and expected. Great buckles, great stitching, great fit, finish and quite adjustable. I followed the recommended strap break instructions - only took about 20 minutes and made a big difference. Only suggestion is for the addition of a internal key strap - I knew it didn't have one when I bought it so as I said, not disappointed. I think an internal key strap would be a worthwhile addition.

    6 months down, ~ 1194 to go!

    by - verified purchaser |
When I received and opened up this backpack just before starting my final semester of undergrad studies, I instantly knew this pack and I were going to be in for some awesome adventures for a long damn time to come. 6 months, one tumble off of the motorcycle, an attempted escape down a talus slope, at least one full thermos of coffee and countless minor encounters with trees, rocks and the labrador puppy later, this bag and I are just getting warmed up.

I've never had a bag of this quality before, and I admittedly own too many backpacks. While I do own packs that are either slimmer, lighter or larger, none occupy the niche that the square backpack has carved out for itself. As best as I can put it, it's the labrador retriever of backpacks -while others species may have it outstripped at certain attributes by default, you will not find a more well rounded specimen the world over. Nor will you find one that is ready to be at your side (well, in this case on your back) through absolutely anything.

After using it daily, I've found this pack aptly handles an academic loadout: a notebook, my iPad (in a thick foam case), engineer's pad, pencils, pens, map markers, sharpies, rulers, compass, calculator, planner, structural geology textbook, research papers, tracing paper (for stereonets) and other miscellaneous school stuff with no problem. It also has no problem holding my day-trip field gear: rock hammers (sledge and pick), field books, sample bags, Brunton, at least two water bottles, the rain shell, binoculars, markers, and a couple of samples that I've whacked off of an outcrop.

The durability of the backpack astounds, as I made the mistake of lashing it to the back of my motorcycle to accommodate a lovely lady and it took a leap at about 35 mph, fully loaded. NOTHING inside was hurt and the bag has some cosmetic scratches from the unavoidable road rash. Some stitching was rubbed off in addition to the blemishes on the leather, so after some superglue delivered via hypodermic needle, melting with a lighter, and a leather linament rubdown this tank is still running like a champ - but now with character.

In summary, Saddleback has created a gem of a backpack in a world increasingly contaminated with absolute crap. Some people gripe about this bag's weight. I say get tougher. Some people jab "Was that made in World War I?" I reply "If it were, it would still be under warranty." Others shiver when they see the cost. I tell them that it's the last backpack I'll ever own and I'll ask them how much they've spent 30 years from now. This backpack was a huge purchase for a college senior but it is one that I have made without a minute of regret. If anyone wants pictures of the bag post-crash, or has any questions, email me at rhetthowell@mail.weber.edu and I'll be more than happy to add to this review.

    Brilliant

    by - verified purchaser |
This is the first saddleback product I've purchased but won't be my last. My expectations for this backpack were high before seeing the bag. I've seen the videos and read all of the reviews but nothing prepared me for the sheer quality and craftsmanship of this backpack. It's sturdy, heavy, and rock solid to its core. I thought the 100 year warranty was a bit of hyperbole but upon a thorough inspection of the pack I realized it could last a hundred years or more. I could list endless reasons why I love this bag but no video, testimonial, or written review can give justice to the greatness of this backpack. It has to be seen and held to be believed.
