We use natural Markings Equal Inclusion of Exceptional Imperfection Ornamentation

"... Saddleback Leather no longer discriminates aganist any cow on the basis of age, appearance, lactose intolerance... if the beast has a natural marking or brand, or whether or not they worship the Divine Bovine."

Truth is, sometimes beauty is only skin deep... like with cows. Their poetry is notoriously terrible, but man, their hides are nature's art. We don't believe that flawlessness equals beauty. Beauty is when we're able to see someting as it really is.

This is true with humans too. There are lots of quality people who are really beautiful not in spite of, but because of the masks life has given them.

So we were heading to go on safari when we came across a small Masai village in the cold highlands of Tanzania. I had heard about how even the lions were afraid of them and so I couldn’t wait to experience the people myself. I first became fascinated by the fierce and fabled Masai warriors when my dad read H. Rider Haggard’s books, Allan Quatermain and King Solomon’s Mines, to me at bedtime as a child. Looking back, those books were more influential than I was aware. This was a treat indeed.

Daniel, the only English speaking warrior, went on to explain that over the centuries, lions, leopards, hyenas and other animals had become painfully aware that when you hear the jingling of small metal ornaments or smelled the Masai oils or saw someone in red garb, it was time to go the other direction. To not, meant to death by spear.

Of course, you’d expect that they would also be good at throwing spears, because isn’t that what you do with a spear anyways? But I learned that wasn’t always the truth. Daniel told me that they only threw spears at lions when the warriors were together. Because if you’re by yourself and you miss the target, the lion won’t. Made sense to me.

So, out of curiosity, I set up a little contest with my backpack to see how good these guys really were. They loved the idea and we all had a really great time laughing and watching and learning and throwing spears. It’s times like this that create memories that stick with you for life. Every time I look at the spear holes through my backpack, I fondly remember the time with the Masai. I was so glad that we stopped, and trust me when I say, they were too.

That holey backpack that inspired this Squared Backpack carries a lot. It carries the memories of spears and laughter and a bunch of other good times around the world, more than I can recount. And I still carry it, not just because it’s nice and broken in and it draws a lot of compliments, but because it’s kind of become part of my life. If you get one, the more you use it and dare to step out of your comfort zone, the more yours will carry too. If you’d like to see the spear throwing contest, click here.

Would love to see this is a size medium

Beautiful update! I owned an original and this update takes into account any feedback I would have provided. I have also barrowed one of the round bags for multiple weeks which is close resemblance to the square bag and found it extremely comfortable. Would love to see this made in a medium for those of us with smaller frames or who need something a bit more compact for city life. Te front pocket is a great addition pulled from the original version. I am sold.

Put me at the top of the preorder list for a medium, cash in hand!

    Thoughtful Improvements/Great Backpack

    by - verified purchaser |
The Squared Backpack is quite improved over the original version known even at Saddleback as "the Tank". I ordered the previous one a year ago, and loved the look of it, but it was too big, too heavy, too rigid. I sent it back, disappointed. Was glad to see this new version which is slimmed in various ways: lighter, less lining, and more flexible but still structured. I was still concerned about the weight, but one can remove the inner leather divider (makes a nice mousepad) and save almost a pound, etc. For carrying clothes, use an inner rectangular pack-it cube about 11x17; there will still be room for other things, and clothes won't bunch. Pockets behind the strapped exterior pockets expand carrying capacity (they fit a large water bottle or like). Suggestion: add a waist/hip belt to shift some of the weight off the shoulders. This can be done with an alternative strap (even the one included to cinch the top of backpack), but would be great if Saddleback included such a belt as an option for long hauls. Great looking bag. Love the leather: the new tobacco brown is richer and darker. For those who may be deciding (like I was) between this and smaller utility duffle, choose the backpack. Holds just as much and more versatile.

    Some Drama

    by - verified purchaser |
Getting the bag was a bit of a debacle. I had ordered a front pocket that left the factory with some unfinished stitching, after sending it back I waited a little while for a replacement. The second one was scratched by whoever packaged it, with the serrated edges of a tape roller. I didn't bother unwrapping the plastic, sent that back too. After getting in contact with customer service there was an indefinite wait on the front pocket, so I switched to this one. I will say that SBL customer service is exemplary, if not for them I probably would've given up. Finally, after several months of back and forth I received a perfect bag, and it is PERFECT. All the preceding drama aside, it is phenomenally built. The quality of materials is top notch, it can't be argued. I already owned a couple small pieces of SBL, so I had an idea of what to expect, but what a tank. I admit, I'd still prefer a Front Pocket, but this one suits all my needs. It's a general purpose and school bag. Basically I take it everyday, something of a "murse" if you will. The front sleeve is a really cool feature, I keep my ipad and a wireless keyboard inside. The side pockets are large, and one fits my SBL Paul Bunyan wallet perfectly. The interior pockets are a nice addition, but I don't really need them so much as I need the interior space. Which is kind of why I'd prefer the Front Pocket. It's ever so slightly bigger than this one. Also, Dave, kudos on the outside pocket design. I stuff crap in those hidden pocket areas all the time when I don't feel like taking the bag all the way off. Overall I can't say enough good things, quite an impressive bag. I only have one suggestion. I'm broad shouldered and barrel chested, but only about 5'9. The shoulder straps have a tendency to slide outwards on my chest. Tightening the straps or changing the nipple rivet hole don't help here either. It would SO helpful, if there was a horizontal strap across the chest to keep the straps (and by extension weight) more centered on my core. Maybe a two piece design that could slide off the shoulder straps if some people don't like/need the chest strap. I've rambled long enough. Great bag, great quality from SBL.

    URBAN HIKER

    by - verified purchaser |
I have the Squared Backpack in chestnut and absolutely love it. It's my daily carry bag. I have had it for six months now and my love affair with this bag is still fresh as morning dew on fluttering daffodils in the breeze (thanks Willy) . It is something that you may love too if you are looking for a casual type of bag that can carry a good amount of stuff that has an urban and sophisticated air about it--think Crocodile Dundee in a corner office or "I think I'll spend the day hiking Manhattan." Some people bellyache that this bag is too heavy, but I think this is the trade off of having a bag that is much more durable and manly than the so called "European" styles--Seinfeld comes to mind. I for one, although a proper metrosexual male, do not take pride in my effeminate stylings, so I appreciate this masculine, functional, and fashionable accessory. Concerning its weight, I posit that this issue is easily forgotten to the fact that once this bag is broken in--quickly I might add--it feels very comfortable. The organic material of leather seems to hug my back. One final thought, concerning the straps at the top opening of the bag, I suggest simply removing them as I have done with my bag. I have seen one review of this bag where the Squared Backpack in the review developed a "lean" to it in the sitting position--I feel that this "lean" was a result of the straps pulling and folding the top of the bag in an asymmetrical manner (if you aren't anal retentive like me just ignore this part). I have no issue with water entering the bag as the front cover does a more than adequate job of keeping rainwater out. Instead, I loop the strap around a corner D-ring and use it as a key holder with a carabiner style clip. HAPPY URBAN HIKING.

    Best Saddleback Product

    by - verified purchaser |
This backpack is, I think, the best product Saddleback sells. It fits my outdoorsy personality yet I use it for business most every day. Why be typical and carry a briefcase (although Saddleback's are awesome)? I choose to rage against the machine and carry this quality piece of man-bag instead. A whole lotta cow must of been used to make this ample-sized backpack. I've owned the old, original, discontinued backpack that this one was modeled after, and this one is far better. It holds a ton of gear but isn't overly huge or too stiff. The weight is just fine, and it's comfortable to carry. I use this when I go camping, to the office, or traveling. All-around great bag that is fun to carry. Quality is the best.

    Backpack with Character!

    by - verified purchaser |
A great pack that will last a lifetime and then some. This pack is great for the office or for traveling. I researched before I purchased and knew what to expect. The pack is everything I hoped and expected. Great buckles, great stitching, great fit, finish and quite adjustable. I followed the recommended strap break instructions - only took about 20 minutes and made a big difference. Only suggestion is for the addition of a internal key strap - I knew it didn't have one when I bought it so as I said, not disappointed. I think an internal key strap would be a worthwhile addition.

    6 months down, ~ 1194 to go!

    by - verified purchaser |
When I received and opened up this backpack just before starting my final semester of undergrad studies, I instantly knew this pack and I were going to be in for some awesome adventures for a long damn time to come. 6 months, one tumble off of the motorcycle, an attempted escape down a talus slope, at least one full thermos of coffee and countless minor encounters with trees, rocks and the labrador puppy later, this bag and I are just getting warmed up.

I've never had a bag of this quality before, and I admittedly own too many backpacks. While I do own packs that are either slimmer, lighter or larger, none occupy the niche that the square backpack has carved out for itself. As best as I can put it, it's the labrador retriever of backpacks -while others species may have it outstripped at certain attributes by default, you will not find a more well rounded specimen the world over. Nor will you find one that is ready to be at your side (well, in this case on your back) through absolutely anything.

After using it daily, I've found this pack aptly handles an academic loadout: a notebook, my iPad (in a thick foam case), engineer's pad, pencils, pens, map markers, sharpies, rulers, compass, calculator, planner, structural geology textbook, research papers, tracing paper (for stereonets) and other miscellaneous school stuff with no problem. It also has no problem holding my day-trip field gear: rock hammers (sledge and pick), field books, sample bags, Brunton, at least two water bottles, the rain shell, binoculars, markers, and a couple of samples that I've whacked off of an outcrop.

The durability of the backpack astounds, as I made the mistake of lashing it to the back of my motorcycle to accommodate a lovely lady and it took a leap at about 35 mph, fully loaded. NOTHING inside was hurt and the bag has some cosmetic scratches from the unavoidable road rash. Some stitching was rubbed off in addition to the blemishes on the leather, so after some superglue delivered via hypodermic needle, melting with a lighter, and a leather linament rubdown this tank is still running like a champ - but now with character.

In summary, Saddleback has created a gem of a backpack in a world increasingly contaminated with absolute crap. Some people gripe about this bag's weight. I say get tougher. Some people jab "Was that made in World War I?" I reply "If it were, it would still be under warranty." Others shiver when they see the cost. I tell them that it's the last backpack I'll ever own and I'll ask them how much they've spent 30 years from now. This backpack was a huge purchase for a college senior but it is one that I have made without a minute of regret. If anyone wants pictures of the bag post-crash, or has any questions, email me at rhetthowell@mail.weber.edu and I'll be more than happy to add to this review.

    Brilliant

    by - verified purchaser |
This is the first saddleback product I've purchased but won't be my last. My expectations for this backpack were high before seeing the bag. I've seen the videos and read all of the reviews but nothing prepared me for the sheer quality and craftsmanship of this backpack. It's sturdy, heavy, and rock solid to its core. I thought the 100 year warranty was a bit of hyperbole but upon a thorough inspection of the pack I realized it could last a hundred years or more. I could list endless reasons why I love this bag but no video, testimonial, or written review can give justice to the greatness of this backpack. It has to be seen and held to be believed.

This is one beautiful backpack! The leather is the finest I have seen, and the craftsmanship is outstanding. Just like a new pair of shoes, it is going to take some breaking in, and I am going to have a great time watching that happen. I am 64 years old, so I'm thinking my GREAT-grandkids will be fighting over it. I love the values your company represents.

    Possibly the best backpack ever!

    by - verified purchaser |
I'm 21 years old and am happy to say this is the last bag I will need to buy. It is perfect, the pictures and YouTube videos do not do justice. The bag is amazing in person. I purchased this bag in dark coffee brown and it is beautiful! It will take a few weeks to break in the straps, so be patient. Other then that, it's perfect.

    perfect "Business" backpack

    by - verified purchaser |
I have XL briefcase. I saw this backpack prior to the new front pocket BP and had to have it.

It holds 17 inch Mac easily.

I like a back pack rather than briefcase even for professional situations.

Everything fits well. I can carry 2 computers if I have to.

I have used in social situations (like festivals) and got many compliments.

I highly recommend it. I am a sucker, so I will get the larger front pocket BP when it comes out.

I have been collecting tobacco brown products and I love that color. Still looks new although the few scratches look cool.

    A show stopper

    by - verified purchaser |
I have a lot of saddleback stuff, but this gets the most attention. Every day someone asks me about or want to check it out.

It's a beautiful piece, and my wife even lets me leave it out, which is saying something. It's built like a tank, has plenty of compartments and d rings.

That said, it's *very* heavy for a backpack. It's also not as spacious as it appears. It's best for things like laptops or other things that can stack. -- books, iPads, notebooks, etc. would not be good for things like clothing as the bag is fairly stubborn about keeping its box shape and doesn't really "break in" like other saddleback bags, and it's not the most comfortable thing in the world. As such, it's not a very versatile bag, but man is it an eye catcher and all your friends will want one.

As a fashion accessory, it's a 10. Judging it just as a backpack, it gets a 10 for build quality and durability, a 5 for utility and a 3 for comfort.

If you're only carting around a laptop and notepad from point A to B, there's no more stylish way to do it. If you're out sightseeing or carrying all day, your back will thank you if you pick a lighter pack.

    Exclusively my favorite travel companion

    by - verified purchaser |
This backpack is the most insanely well built leather product I have ever bought.

It is the only product that I've come across that is Classy, Rugged, functional, beautiful, and tough all in the same package.

This was my first purchase from Saddleback Leather, and the start of a long line of future purchases.

I've now owned my backpack for about 1 year, I travel between the southern states, and northern B.C. Canada quite a bit and it has been, and will exclusively remain to be my favorite travel companion.

    A Backpack for Life

    by - verified purchaser |
I've had the Dark Tobacco backpack for about a year now. I can honestly say that for backpacks, it's the best investment that you could ever make. I was originally worried about what my wife would say, but I was going through a backpack a year anyway and she's now happy that we don't have to spend money on them anymore! There's an old saying...you get what you pay for. In this case it's true. I will have to buy my son one however because in our case he doesn't want to wait until I'm dead to have it! Thanks!

    With me wherever i go

I call it "My ridiculously over-engineered leather backpack" and I tell everyone it is bullet-proof. So far no one has doubted me.

My backpack is now about two years old and has been all over the US with me. It's just the right size to hold my Macbook Pro 15", power supply, a portfolio and some folders in the main compartment, and all the iPhone charger cables, business cards, etc in the accessory pockets. My IPad goes in the front deep, narrow pocket and my aircard and two small notebooks go in the side pockets.

The quality, fit, and finish of this backpack cant be beat. The acid test? The folks who comment on the most are TSA agents, who see thousands of bags a day. Takes something special to get a rise out of them!

    Attention Grabber

    by - verified purchaser |
I have traveled across the globe with this backpack. China, Cambodia, Thailand, UAE, Afghanistan and more. I must say this is a bullet proof bag that is always with me pretty much every day of my life for the past several years. She carries everything I need and I will never need another carry on/computer bag again!

One thing that happens all the time is how many people stop me in the airport to compliment me on the bag and ask where I got it. I almost wish I had a way to track how many of the hundreds actually went and got gear from Saddleback.

I now have several Saddleback items and am contemplating my next buy. Thanks for making such a great line of products

    More spacious than you think

    by - verified purchaser |
This is the first product review I've ever made. To start, I own the large suitcase, large waterbag, duffle, beast, large briefcase, large wallet, desk pads, and this backpack. All in coffee brown. I only wish these products were available when I was younger and living overseas in China, Pakistan, UK, and Russia. I purchased these products in anticipation for my next adventure. I use each one of them except the suitcase and beast which sit in my living room, "waiting their turn". As for the backpack. I think this backpack is much sturdier than the others SB sells. It was very stiff and "boxy" when I purchased it and I know people question the size. However, I broke it in with kettlebells and weights on long hikes. I also filled the pockets with items that stretched the leather and increased the size considerably. I put a large first aid kit in the front pocket and it stretched to around 4 times its original size. All 3 pockets now bulge (nicely) and make the pack look like a traditional one. I debated placing the pockets in a hot water bath for ease of stretching but for now I am holding off. During my long walks I recieve many compliments, mainly from really young people who want to know where I got it. So the bottom line of this review is not to count this pack out due to storage capabilities. Stretching is easily accomplished. If you have the courage, select items you would like your pack size to be, dip your entire bag in a hot bath, immediately insert your items into the pockets, etc and watch them easily stretch. Word of warning, there is no going back on the stretch if you do this. When the bag is wet and filled/stretched, let it dry. A hot day will help. I know this technique is not for everyone and the thought of leather and water will not sit well with everyone, but it works. Once it dries, you can condition it as you see fit. Who knows, Dave may read this and not even post it because I recommend soaking one of his beautiful bags.

Solid Oak, Stainless Steel and Saddleback leather!!

    by - verified purchaser |
Like all quality items in life the Saddleback products stand alone and cannot be compared to any similar product. I ordered the backpack and was in total shock when I opened the package! I expected a quality bag but I was surprised to see the trophy like product. The bag demands your attention and you absolutely must touch the leather. At 72 years old I have purchased lots of product in my life but have never been more pleased and satisfied. I just wished I would have had this when I was piloting in the world theater as baggage was extremely valuable and necessary. My only problem with the bag is deciding which Grandbaby to leave it to as it will have at least a couple of years left on the 100 year warranty when I am through using it!!

    Oops!

    by - verified purchaser |
I think I goofed. I was attracted by the glowing reviews, and I bought a backpack about 4 months ago. Although I love the quality, I find that I never use it. Two reasons: first, it is just too heavy! Second, the shoulder straps are ridiculously stiff and difficult to use. This backpack is a case of manly appeal taken to such absurd lengths that the product sits in the closet instead of on my back. Sorry, Dave, I love your company ethos, but this bag misses the mark.

    D-Ring Dilemma

    by - verified purchaser |
My wife gave me this bag for Christmas last year. I travel constantly for work and get compliments on this bag everywhere I go! It is very nice and the quality is unmatched to any other leather bag I have seen. There are only 3 things I think everyone who is considering this bag should know.

    1. It is quite heavy, but this is also a sign of the quality and durability.

    2. The seam at the bottom of the back can chafe your lower back. The optional lengths for the shoulder straps make it so its rides too high and chafes, or rests lower on my belt but then carries the weight too low on my back and can cause some lower back aching on long travel days. I chose the chafing and now my lower back is almost as leathery as my bag!

    3. The D-rings that are used on both ends of the shoulder straps are secured with a threaded end and an attached nut. If you do not frequently tighten the nut; the d-ring opens and the shoulder straps just fall off. Can be very annoying. The other day as I checked into a hotel the guy behind the desk complimented the bag. I said thanks. As I swung it off my shoulder the bag went flying and I was left there with just a shoulder strap in my hand. The guy said, "Much cooler than practical huh?" I replied, "Pretty much." If this issue could be fixed I would gladly give this bag a 5 star rating.

All that being said, I do not plan on using another backpack for the rest of my life. My wife and are fans of Saddleback. She uses the small clutch purse daily, I use the wallet, gave wallets as grooms men's gifts and just ordered an iPad cover today.

Great products but there is always room for improvement.
