I recently received the small chestnut leather suitcase. It's beautiful to see an American company making truly heirloom quality products. The suitcase is gorgeous to look at. It smells rich, and lovely to touch. The family will fight over this luggage when I'm dead, but that will be awhile. I plan to live a long time. These suitcases will travel with me around the world.

I own the small tobacco brown suitcase and it is the most durable bag on the market not to mention I receive the best compliments.

Medium tobacco

by -

I was finally able to purchase the medium suitcase in tobacco. I got it to add to our collection of saddleback products in addition to fly home for our wedding in May. After our wedding Im sure my wife will place this somewhere in our house to add as a decorative piece. The suitcase is nice and sturdy. You can tell there was a lot of handmade work that went into this case. The stiching is nice and even, the rivets have a nice copper look to them. I havent weighed it yet but the UPS tracking said the entire package was 21 lbs. The main strap has an eyelet re-enforced with a metal grommet. The only negative thing I can say is that it looks so good I hope the airline doesnt misplace it on our travels. Someone may want it more than me! Other than that Im sure this will stay in our family for generations.

Speedster accoutrement

Bought this suitcase specifically for the luggage rack of my '55 Porsche Speedster (okay, so it's really a replica). The car gets lots of compliments but have gotten lots on the luggage!

Beautiful carbon color and strong!

by -

I have Rimowa travel case titanium but lock and handle is easily broken. ( But good world wide repair service), today I got carbon Large travel luggage, I am sure this is more stronger than expensive Rimowa titanium luggage.

I want to buy one more small size also.

Bravo!

Received our large tobacco suitcase today, and we are thrilled! Dave, everything you've said about your products is absolutely true; they’re amazing, and compliment inspiring. At first I was apprehensive about all the five-star reviews, and it took me a few weeks to pull the trigger on the purchase, but boy am I glad I did. My oldest Jenni (after I sent her a link to the suitcase) said I was nuts to spend that kind of money on a suitcase sight unseen! Generally I would agree, but I believed you when you said you would back up the purchase, so I made the decision to take the plunge. I can no longer travel by boat or plane, but this nearly matches our 335IS leather and looks rather grand sitting in the back seat (wouldn't want to hide it in the trunk). We leave for a week trip from Santa Barbara to Napa Valley, staying at a different hotel each night, and can’t wait to put some “wear” on this beautiful heirloom. Something tells me Jenni will be the one who will “fight over it when you’re gone”. Bravo! Well done!

Well suited traveler!

Well back again and here with what I believe to be a well-qualified review.

May 2013(?) I bought a large tobacco suitcase from SBL and love it more than I probably should. Next to the briefcase I bought 4 years ago it's probably my favorite piece of leather I own.

Last week I had a (very) weak moment and bought a small DCB suitcase I have been pining over for ages because, truth be told, the large suitcase is way too large to travel with on the average or even above average trip. If you were leaving somewhere for two-plus weeks, then it might work.

To the not-so-great: I'm fortunate to be able to have two of them side by side and can notice very identifiable quality/standards differences between the two suitcases a full year and change apart. My first suitcase was manufactured before the change in leather colors, the EIEIO thing, and the change in logos. The only reason I say that is because many believe there has been a slight dip in quality/standards since that time. I'm rambling now though - apologies.

The noticeable differences...things that I hope SBL take from this review: the large suitcase had rollers on the metal squares that helped facilitate the tightening of the leather straps for closure, the corners were reinforced and made more durable by metal "feet" on each corner pad on the LG suitcase, the LG suitcase's pigskin lining is slightly more durable than the the new "natural" pigskin lining (but I like the color against the DCB better than the old pigskin lining), there are no guided D rings for the middle closure strap to go through.

Those are the biggies that I can tell from a side by side comparison. There are a lot of smaller nuanced differences - and I still love, love, love SBL products and will continue to buy them - so I'm sure there are plenty of good reasons for some of these changes. I'm also fairly confident most are not cost-savers for them either, so there may very well be good reasons for these changes. An answer from SBL would go a long way in further boosting my confidence in their great company!

Hope this review is helpful to all who are considering spending the incredibly large chunk of change it takes to afford one of these great pieces. Truly, buy one because you WANT to...not because you think it'll change your next big trip with the family because they're way too incredibly useless for the 345 days it'll be sitting in your living room...and you can buy enough throw away suitcases to last your travel needs for the next 100 years for $1,200. All this coming from a man who owns two of them - and wouldn't sell or return them for anything.

Large Tobacco, newer version

by

Great suitcase.

Only problem is I saw youtube videos of the earlier version with rollers on the strap buckles and d-rings that allow locking the case shut, so I wish mine had those features, too. You do have to pull hard on the straps for a tight closure, so the rollers would come in handy there.

I'm not sure how much savings there are in leaving them off, but I imagine production costs were the reason for the change.

need XL size

i have 3 of the old style. great for traveling and catch a lot of attention overseas, but i wish their was a larger size than L. the owner doesn't seem to get it.....and i am not sure he is traveling on a 50lb suitcase ticket anyway?! i think a lot of the customers buying these are traveling on a 70lb ticket.....thus, we need more space.

BUYING ONLINE

It's always a leap of faith to buy online without seeing the product first. My suitcase exceeded my expectations. They really are "all that" ! Thanks for making a great product!!

Large suticase

by -

I bought the large suitcase last year. Overall, I like it. The outside DCB leather is nice quality and I saw only very small marks on the outside. The light pigskin leather on the inside was a different issue. There was a large crease running down the entire lid of the briefcase. Saddleback customer service told me that it was not a defect despite it looking rather bad. I kept the briefcase but still wonder if I should have returned it. I expect natural marks on the leather, but this crease was not a natural range mark. If it was not for this issue, I would have given the suitcase five stars.

Exactly what I had envisioned!

by

I have looked at the leather suitcases for years and never had the nerve to pull the trigger. I finally had enough money in pocket to get one and my only regret is how long I waited! I was thrilled when it arrived and love the look and feel of the leather, the sturdy construction, and the romance of the classic design. Nothing could compare, however, with the feeling of receiving praise and compliments everywhere I took it! Fellow travelers, airport staff, and resort staff all raved about my Saddleback luggage! Incidentally, I absolutely stuffed the suitcase to the point I had difficulty closing it and it still weighed in at just under 50 pounds. Amazing! I had everything I needed for a week of being very well dressed (suits, ties, pocket squares, dress shoes, etc.) in Las Vegas.

5 Stars!

by

I have three of these suitcases, large size which is the size currently available, in tobacco, medium in dark coffee brown, and small size in chestnut. The medium and small sizes are not currently available, but may occasionally pop up in Dave's Deals. I purchased the medium coffee brown from Dave's Deals. The small size is a little larger overall compared with the hard sided carry-on, and I check in all of these bags when I travel with them. I select the size(s) to bring based on my travel needs each trip. The bags do not lock; if they did lock, I still would not lock them, as that would encourage thieves to cut the leather straps. I have checked these bags twenty or thirty times on major airlines, sometimes with just clothing inside, occasionally with other items inside that I could not or did not wish to carry-on. Not once has anything ever been stolen. A few times I have had a paper inside notifying me that TSA inspected my bag. Never have I had a problem yet, hope I never will. I of course don't check money, jewelry, or expensive electronics. These suitcases are tough and continue to hold up well. The baggage handlers treat them rough, I have scuffs, scrapes, and a couple of gouges in the leather. The bags continue to look better each trip, and improve with age and wear and tear, particularly the tobacco. Everyone loves my suitcases. Every trip I am asked by people I have never met, where did I get them, how can they get them, etc. I carry these bags most of the time; usually it is a short walk from the airport curb to the check in counter, but sometimes longer distances. Packed full, my large suitcase is usually 40-45 lbs, the other suitcases, a little lighter. For longer walks, I ordered extra Saddleback briefcase straps, and I clip a strap to the rings where the handle attaches, and carry a suitcase over my shoulder. On the occasions when I am carrying two of these suitcases, along with a carry-on, and a briefcase, then I strap the two suitcases and sometimes the briefcase too, to a lightweight folding luggage cart. When I get to the counter, I fold up the luggage cart, put it in a plastic bag, and then into the suitcase, it is quick and easy, and an easy answer for those that may require rolling luggage for any number of reasons. The look and feel, build, and overall quality and durability of these suitcases is truly outstanding; there is really nothing else on the market that even comes close. I continue to be very happy with these suitcases.

Here is the thing

I believe in climate change and that the earth is in a bad environmental shape, and wether you're a believer in this or not, do yourself a favor a buy this suitcase, i have the medium size and it's crazy well manufactured, i think Dave is loosing it to how much he's doing these products so well! it's surreal! it will be the last suitcase you'll buy unless you buy 2 3 4 or more of that one, it's a shame that the medium size doesn't exist anymore because it's the perfect balance between what an airline weight limit is and what you need to pack for few weeks!

Story

Let’s just say that I came into the relationship with a lot of baggage. I was very aware of how much people liked my suitcases, but I don’t think Suzette really understood until we went to Bora Bora on our honeymoon.

We walked off the airplane and stacked the luggage on the boat dock waiting for our boat to take us to our overwater love shack, which had a glass top on the coffee table that you could take off to feed the lighted area of fish at night. There were also steps off the back deck into the crystal clear 16-shades-of-blue water. In other words, go on a honeymoon or anniversary there. Anyways, everyone was staring at the leather, trying not to look like they were, but I kept on catching them.

As everyone was waiting for their boats to arrive to take them to their resorts, someone finally asked, “Excuse me sir, where’d you get that luggage? It’s gorgeous”. Suddenly a whole lot of people turned their bodies around and stared, waiting for an answer. Let’s just say that I ran out of business cards and pretty much paid for our honeymoon with all of the luggage sales over the next couple of months.

Of all the pieces that we have, these are the most fun to travel with, because even the check-in people at the airport go on and on about our luggage.
