A slim briefcase with a smaller profile than our original classic briefcase, with two interior compartments holding up to a 17" laptop.
A while back, I was on a small island off the coast of Panama and was making my way to a fabled surf spot called Wizard Beach, only accessible by foot. The boat dropped me off and I started up the trail (my little brother was already there waiting for me with the board), but little did I know that the 25-minute hike was all mud, slicker than snot. In order to concentrate on not slipping, I turned my briefcase into a backpack and only fell once. It’s a real convenient feature you’re going to like if you walk or hike long distances. As it turned out, the waves were way too big that day, so we didn't surf.

I love this bag and everything about it! I bought the black large one and it's absolutely beautiful. I'm looking forward to seeing it age. My main concern before buying it was that someone said it was heavy. Not an issue I can tell you! I have removed one of the paddings from the shoulder strap since I have no plans using it as a backpack. Before buying it I was thinking about maybe removing some of the D-rings at he bottom of the bag since I have no plans strapping anything to it. I now know that I will keep them. They add character to the bag in a nice way. I bought two wallets at the same time and I must warn you, it's addictive! I'm sure I haven't bought my last Saddleback product.
really great briefcase!!!

This is one great bag!!! It's almost too classy for me! I bought the chestnut thin in medium. It smells fantastic and looks even better. The way it's constructed, it's not going to tear up anytime soon. Your products are pricey, but, I can truthfully say, they seem to be worth it.
Love Affair

I've had my bag for about a year now. At first I felt I made a mistake in getting chestnut over dark coffee brown, but with each passing day, I love the colour more and more. This bag has been one of, if not, the best purchases I have ever made. It works as a fantastic book bag, briefcase, and overnight bag. Its hard to put into words how I feel about this bag. I feel like it grows with me. It just keeps getting better with age and I'm looking forward to many future years of use.
I'd like to thank saddleback leather for such a great product.
Such a handsome high quality briefcase

I bought the briefcase for my husband who is in law school. J loves loves the bag and he is very picky about almost everything. J told me he wants a briefcase that is not too small, not too large, leather preferred, high quality and affordable. Writing my doctoral dissertation would be an easier task ! We (mostly I) search all over and one day I click on saddleback leather website. I am so impressed and jealous with his bag. The leather is thick. The color is handsome. J has a new companion going with him everyday from classroom to courtroom. Oh and when he stopped at a traffic light on a bike wearing the bag as a backpack, people would compliment how amazing his briefcase is ! Thank you so much Saddleback !
With love from Tucson, AZ
Exceeded Expectations
by Buck | 2/20/2015 3:54 pm
I knew this was going to be a good bag because a friend at work told me really liked his and I trust his judgement. I got my Thin Briefcase (Large) today. All I can say is Holy Cow! This bag is like nothing I have ever seen before. It will withstand the apocalypse. For all of the complaints I read here about the bags being heavy? Yeah, but they're heavy in a good way. This bag is not for the faint of heart. This is a solid, rugged bag that yes, my children will likely fight over after I'm gone. You lift this bag and you KNOW you have quality in your hands.
I originally thought the briefcase was a tad pricey, and now I'm thinking I got a deal. It exceeds every expectation I had. I know where I'm going luggage shopping in the future.
Great Briefcase!
by Samson | 10/9/2014 9:39 am
I just received my Thin Briefcase in carbon and I love it! I was nervous about the color but the price was right so I figured I would take the risk. The Carbon (now discontinued) is actually coffee or a really dark chocolate brown color. It is extremely handsome and well made. I probably should have ordered the Large but the medium should be fine for my EDC. Looking forward to wearing it in.
Thanks!
Always Satisfied

Just received a Large Thin Chestnut Briefcase for my daughter's law school graduation. Am very pleased with the Quality, Expedient Delivery, and Exceptional Customer Service. This is my third purchase in the last eleven months. Bought a Large Classic Chestnut Briefcase for myself, a Medium Chestnut Notepad Holder for my daughter, and now the Large Thin Chestnut Briefcase. It's a real pleasure dealing with Saddleback Leather. They make a great product, second to none. I only wish I had purchased your products earlier in my career. Thanks again.
Top Notch
by Excelsior | 9/17/2014 2:07 pm
I agree with lawyer Mitch, I also have a 17" laptop comp. that fits just fine in the large thin briefcase. I've had it several years and no signs of weakness in the construction. Its excellent for carrying manila file folders and a legal pad in the side pocket which allows some give. I carry three different electrical accessory plugs for the computer, notary stamp and seal as well as occasional snacks in the front compartment ahead of the laptop and sometimes an additional file folder. I put my thumb drive on the interior leather key clip and business cards and pens in the interior pockets. I also have a Classic Tablet Bag (for my Samsung tab) which is just as nice and spacious for all my plug accessories and cell phone clipped to one of the exterior pockets. Often I carry them both with me with no problem with the excellent leather shoulder pads. Compliments flow when people see them. I highly recommend Dave's products.
Great briefcase
by Mark | 8/7/2014 9:26 am
Did a lot of research on various brands and ultimately settled on the medium in chestnut. Fits my macbook pro 13' and a bunch of other things I need each day at work. It's everything I hoped it would be and I'll get a lot of use out of it over the coming years. It's great knowing I don't have to baby the bag and that if anything goes wrong it's all under warranty. Now I just have to save up for the duffel bag...
Beautiful Work of Art

Being the proud owner of several SBL products, it is time to write a review! I recently picked up a "Dave's Deal" DCB Thin Briefcase and absolutely love it. I am still looking for the imperfection that caused the 15% discount. This was the first "DD" I went with and I'm sorry I waited so long. The briefcase is just what I wanted. It is big enough for the things I need to bring home each day, but not big enough it's a hassle to keep with me. The strap was a little long for where I like it to sit, but it's designed to be taken in and look classy. I carry a Window's Surface Pro 2, a 5x8 SBL Moleskine Notebook and a few documents and it's more than capable of this each day. More books, documents and it would start to get crowed, but that's not what this is designed for. Slim and basic. Just the way I like most things. I look forward to loading and unloading it each day. I feel like my 3 year old and his toy box! I seriously have a SBL addiction!
AMAZING

Typically I'm an impulse shopper. If I see something I like, I buy it. However, this was not as simple of a process for me. I've been lusting after some SBL gear for at least 3 months now -- glancing at the website probably 2 times per day (obsessive I know). I finally decided to pull the trigger on the thin briefcase in chestnut. Man is this one handsome bag! I've been using it for a couple of days now and I love it. Looks great, feels great, smells great. Worth every penny.
I got the medium and it absolutely fits everything I need to carry. I have an HP elitebook 8470p for work. I believe it's a 15 inch laptop (13 inches horizontally). Fits perfectly, with room to spare. This was the difficult deciding factor. I was really worried the lap top wouldn't fit, but it definitely does.
The chestnut color is beautiful. Originally I was drawn to the tobacco color. But for work, I'm glad I got the chestnut -- a but more formal. I work in a formal office setting (suit and tie), so it fits in nicely. Already got some great markings on the bag and have received a TON of compliments.
The only thing missing is a place to carry a water bottle. I always have some sort of beverage with me, so that would be nice. But given its thinness I can't envision the bag with that. That being said, I'm totally hooked and figure that buying the classic briefcase is an easy way to solve my water bottle issue. Why have 1, when you can have 2 awesome bags!!
If you're on the fence... hop off and buy this thing. You won't regret it.
Dave's Deals
by anonymous - verified purchaser | 7/24/2014 9:13 am
This is my first MAJOR Saddleback Leather purchase. I've got a couple wallets, a phone sleeve (it fits the Moto X perfectly), a laptop sleeve, and I've given out the smaller items as gifts.
I had to take time to save up enough for this purchase but it was well worth it. I hit a Dave's Deals at 25% off of a Medium Chestnut. The only issue I could find was small scratches that I myself would have put into this bag in an open section of leather. I love it.
This bag, the medium, fits two laptops in the back compartment. I can fit a 17' Samsung Series 7 in it and a Lenovo Yoga 11s that's in a Saddleback sleeve. Up front I can keep an external hard drive, a notebook, pens, charger, etc.
With two laptops it's heave but that is my own doing, perfectly okay with it though. I'm 6'0, 165, and I'm on the fence of if it might be too small for my size. Honestly though, the bag really is perfect. I don't need bells and whistles and pockets. I wanted a bag that travels as hard and as much as i do. It feels like I have one now.
I was given a $400-$450 Tumi leather briefcase before this. The plastic coated leather ends started cracking and the bag was wearing quick after 2 years of use. One of my kids will use this Saddleback briefcase when they're in college or for their first job, that's an awesome feeling.
Thanks everyone!
Rugged Professionalism

I bought one of these for myself after getting my younger brother one in chestnut for his birthday. He works at a major bank headquarters and gets many compliments from his top brass. If he only knew how close I was to keeping it and getting him a card! I liked it so much I had to get one for myself. I must admit most of my Saddleback products (I've developed an unhealthy addiction) are either dark coffee brown or tobacco because I love those colors, but I decided to go with the carbon black since I felt this was a better choice for work.
I'm a engineer and inspector in the petrochemical industry and I have to say the large thin briefcase in carbon black was a perfect choice for me! I receive compliments wherever I go... from craftsmen in rural fabrication shops to engineering and sales managers in Houston engineering offices, the people I do business with notice the beauty and quality immediately. And I love the new black. It reminds me of weathered motorcycle leather. It's truly beautiful. I can't wait to see how it looks after a decade or two of additional use.
It's the perfect size for my normal day to day. It easily swallows my Dell M6400 mobile workstation (which is a huge, thick laptop), a Saddleback 8.5"x11" notepad holder, a folder of project files/drawings, a cable bag full of all my accessory cables, my safety gear, and smaller inspection equipment.
I couldn't be happier with this purchase! As others have said, short of a litigator, the thin briefcase is probably the right size briefcase for most people. Thanks for another great Saddleback Leather product!
Stylish and Simple

I have owned this briefcase for 6 months and am extremely pleased with it's perfomance and durability. Unexpectedly, the simple and well designed interior and exterior pockets have kept this bag better organized than my previous backpacks and satchels. As stated by others, the bag initially feels heavy but the shoulder strap is padded well and once you learn to use the strap, the bag carries well even through busy airports at a brisk walk.
Fantabulous

I own all kinds of briefcases. But this is the tip of the top of the cream! Only beef, please make the rings optional, Dave! Then they'll be perfect!!! Keep it, dude. And the friendly staff and Dave's stories all add up to out of this world. Love my satchel and large gadget back. Went to a store I won't name, known for great designer leather from Italy. And they wanted to know where I got my gadget bag!
Oh, the colour of it all...

I bought this product about 18 months ago. It's great. I can't say enough good things about the one I have.
One of the clips failed and SB fixed it and shipped it free of charge (they even refunded my postage cost).
Just a brilliant bag and company.
But...
If you don't already own one, you may be too late. I have the carbon black one, but before they changed the dye. I have to say, the one I have is way better looking. If you like coffee or chestnut, no worries. If you like carbon black or tobacco, you are fresh out of luck.
That's just my personal preference of course. You might love the new dye.
But you can't go too wrong with anything on here.
Awesome Bag!

I bought the briefcase after being intorduced to Saddleback leather via a Ipad cover my wife bought for me. This is the most incredible bag ever. I was reently inn a very bad automobille accident that left me in the hospital and totaled the car. My briefcase was completely unharmed other than blood from a head injury. The service folks at Saddleback quickly helped me with the correct conditioner and a cleaning process although, I've just left the stains therre as a reminder. I have several pieces now and I'm getting the duffle next.
It Just Doesn't Get Better

After drooling over these cases for a long time, my wife finally bought me the Large Thin Briefcase for my birthday - Saddleback Leather is my new love language. I couldn't be happier. I was torn between the classic large or the thin large but I finally decided on thin. In the end the classic was to deep for my needs but I love the look of it. When the case arrived in the mail it was so much better than any picture or video on the internet from anywhere. It is the perfect size, I don't find the weight to be an issue at all, the shoulder strap is much more comfortable than any other case I have owned, the leather is fantastic. The DCB color is great. Whether a Dave's Deal or not this is worth every penny. Buy one and cross it off your bucket list.
Classy

I bought the Large in Chestnut color as a college graduation gift for myself and couldn't be more happy. It is everything I wanted going into graduate school where I wasn't wanting to wear a standard backpack all day. I couldn't even count how many compliments I have received on the briefcase and absolutely love the character it has gained over the past few months. I'm already looking to buy another Saddleback product; I just need more time to decide which!
The First of Many
by anonymous - verified purchaser | 7/24/2014 9:12 am
Love this bag! The first one I ordered was as an 'attaboy' from my boss for some good work done. He asked what I wanted, gave me a price range and I came back within five minutes with the bag I'd been coveting for a while. I ordered a 'large' and was a little surprised at just how large and hefty it was. Loved the craftsmanship, but as a little guy (5'9" and 155) the bag felt a little big on me. My problem was solved when somebody wanted the bag more than me; my truck was broken into and my bag, laptop and Saddleback wallet were all stolen. I was honestly most upset about the bag. I re-ordered myself the wallet and bag but got the smaller size this time. Hooray for Dave's Deals! The small briefcase fits me perfectly. I especially like the change from the screw-style carabiners that held the old strap to the new clip one. The screws would work themselves loose after speeding down bouncy oilfield roads. I've gotten more compliments from strangers on this bag than anything I've owned. Keep up the great work!
A True Beauty!
by anonymous - verified purchaser | 7/24/2014 9:11 am
The large dark coffee brown thin briefcase far exceeded my expectations. The quality is outstanding, the design is simple and elegant, and the functionality is very well thought out. It is a true beauty! It certainly is the last one you will ever need to buy...unless you become addicted to their products, which will probably happen. I started out with the ID wallet, and don't plan on stopping with this briefcase.
The best briefcase ever for professionals
by anonymous - verified purchaser | 7/24/2014 9:11 am
I needed a lawyer briefcase. One that is durable enough to stand up to everyday wear of the city, but also looks classy and professional. The thin briefcase in chestnut is it.
I use the large classic briefcase as a trial bag, but the thin briefcase is what I carry on a daily basis. It holds everything I need, it's gorgeous, and it's not too heavy. I can't recommend this briefcase enough. Plus it looks better every single day I use it.
Great All Round Bag

I bought the thin briefcase in chestnut around 9 months ago and it hasn't left my side since. From my day to day uses at university to hiking jungles in Costa Rica, this bag gets the job done. Can't wait until I can get my next piece!
Head turner

Been using the thin briefcase for about a week....still has that wonderful leather smell...love the heft of the thin large briefcase....chestnut is a wonderful color and heads turn when I commute by train to work. Leather is softening and developing nicely. Highly functional with no frills ...love the masculine appeal! Will cost ya...but worth every single cent! My first saddleback leather...and I am addicted ....!
A Day to Day Bag
by Nicholas Franklin - verified purchaser | 7/24/2014 9:11 am
I've been carrying a bag every day of my life since I entered grade school. At first it was a big canvas military backpack, then a Timbuk2 messenger bag, and now the medium thin briefcase from SBL.
If you're looking for the bag to carry every day, this is probably the best one money can buy. At 4lbs, it's got some heft to it but isn't the 6lb monster the Classic briefcase is. My daily carry includes an ipad (or occasoinal laptop), DS, all my chargers/cables, earbuds in case, pen and paper pad, wallet and occasional other materials with room to spare. It's a bigger bag than you might expect given it's the smallest briefcase SBL offers.
After a few weeks use it's already developing a really nice look to the leather, softening up in the joints and getting a couple battle scars from the weekly grind.
My only complaints would be in the strap hardware that attaches to the bag. If you're the type who would remove the strap occasionally, or convert it to a backpack, it can be quite difficult and slow to unscrew the hinged latches. They aren't quick release by any means.
Beyond that tho. This is the day-to-day office warriors dream, and it's tough enough to stand up to any boardroom jungle. Couldn't be happier.
Natural Marking
We wanted to let you know that this was recently added to the cow hand hoof-book, in the section governing acceptable hides:
"...Saddleback Leather no longer discriminates against any cow on the basis of age, appearance, lactose intolerance...if the beast has a natural marking or brand, or whether or not they worship the Divine Bobine."
Truth is, sometimes beauty is only skin deep...like with cows. Their poetry is notoriously terrible, but man, their hides are nature's art. We don't believe that flawlessness equals beauty. Beauty is when we're able to see something as it really is. This is true with humans too. There are lots of quality people who are really beautiful not in spite of, but because of the marks life has given them.
Leather is special because it's durable, natural, and it tells a story about a cow's life. Maybe the leather in your bag was from a real Casanova. Maybe he got tipped a lot. Maybe the bulls really liked the way she moooved. We don't know for sure, but we want you to see those stories and add your own as you carry your bag around.
Just to be clear, some leather definitely does not make the cut, but a lot of what has been rejected in the past for being too naturally beautiful, will.
We cut the nasty looking marks out and throw them away and the cool or insignificant ones we leave. When you want to know what the story is behind one of the marks on your leather, look it up here.
Stretch Marks
Marbly lines generally regarded as not cool marks on mothers, unless the mother is a cow or pig and then they're more than cool.
Stretch marks appear when the animal grows quickly or gets really fat for a time in life for some reason.
Veins
The veins and stretch marks are what give the leather that cool marbled look.
Did you know that if they slaughter a cow in the winter in a place where it's really really cold, that it'll have more pronounced veins because the blood rises closer to the surface to keep them warm.
Wrinkles
Almost all thick leather wrinkles when it is bent back on itself. Kind of like when you squat down in a pair of leather shoes and wrinkles appear about 4" from the toe.
Insect Bites
These pesky insects don't leave cows alone either. Ticks, mosquitoes and other bug bites show themselves as a tiny black or white spot.
You ever see birds sitting on top of cows? They're filling their craws with these bugs.
Pores
It's common to see very fine holes on leather if you look closely. Cows have hair too and if it isn't completely removed in the initial tanning process then you'll see them.
Scars
Itching oneself against or running scared through barbed wire, mesquite bushes or cactus will cause long thin black lines. If the bulls liked the way the cow moooved, then she'll get hoof marks which are usually up to an inch wide and a few inches long.
The bigger scars happen when they got gored or kicked hard. Two small single black scars not far apart are often bat bites. Those are found on cows in more jungly areas.
Callouses
If a cow sleeps on it's right side for years or has a habit of rubbing one spot with his horns or any kind of regular friction in one place, you get a callous.
These markings are usually smooth, not raised, small and circular in shape.
Brands
The mark of a cow well loved. Brands can be shapes, letters and numbers. We only use the nice and smooth healed up ones.
In third world countries, some ranchers don't have enough money to buy a branding iron, so they heat up a piece of iron and draw a picture on the cow. Whatever's clever, right?
Which leather is better, the old or the new?
The "new" leather is the same quality as the "old" leather. We just stopped letting some of the cooler marks fall onto the cutting room floor.
Will the scars and marks hurt the construction?
Nope. Any mark or scar that is possibly weaker than other areas, we cut out and throw away.
Are the animals tortured before they are slaughtered?
Absolutely not!!! With some pigs, we do use waterboarding and sensory deprivation techniques previous to slaughtering them, but cows do not require any special handling.
What if I want a lot of marks?
If you don't get lots of marks, please don't return it in hopes of the next one having more. But hopefully, the Divine Bovine will smile upon you and you'll receive a bag that tells a cool story. If it doesn't have a lot of story on it, then you'll have to add your own by using it hard.
What if I don't want any marks?
Not all cows live hard lives and so not all hides have a lot of scars. If you order Carbon or Coffee, the thin or small scars won't stand out much. They show up nicely on Tobacco though. People who like the Chestnut color (red/brown) seem to like more perfect leather and we're very aware of that. It's not right or wrong; just a preference. Generally, we cut the big scars out of the chestnut leather, but there will always be a few here and there. If you get your bag and you really don't like it, send it back and we'll take care of you. We're not worried in the slightest. And remember, it's not the scars that make the bag, it's the bag. The marks just add to it.
Can I get Chestnut and Coffee with cool marks?
The amount of markings on Chestnut will be less than on other colors because we cut more of the bigger scars out of that leather. We know that, in general, Chestnut people aren't too big on large scars. Marks tend to blend in with the Coffee, but you'll still see them.
Are some scars more valuable, or sought after than others?
Yes. Absolutely! For example, most of our designs have pigskin interiors, which generally have a smooth matte quality. Often, these pieces will have a scrape or scar-type marking on it. These are, in fact, scars associated with the romantic life of the pig. More than most other animals, the pig is known for its violent mating behaviors and is aggressive, selfish and generally demeaning to its female partner. The male pig bites, scratches, gouges and anything else he can think of to have his way (in some rare cases pigs have been known to use other strategies, like cleaning the pigpen, bringing flowers, showing kindness to her relatives, etc,). Thus, many female pigs, at least the desirable ones, are pretty scarred-up. In the pig culture, this is a sign of status. The best hides for our purposes (i.e. creating the best leather bag possible) are the female hides because they are so much larger than the males and therefore we can get larger solid pieces (and girls just have better skin). Therefore, our pigskin will sometimes have various scarring patterns. We refer to these as 'love scars'.
How will this affect my warranty?
This won't have any effect on an existing warranty or a new warranty.
Why haven't you done this before?
Saddleback started and grew strong exactly because of allowing scars and marks and brands on our leather. It's what made us into who we are today. The marks became less and less frequent since the people cutting the leather didn't understand why anyone would want leather with imperfections. So, they thought they were helping us and and it just kind of stayed that way until now.
If you are using more of the leather per hide, will the price go down?
The marks and scars have always represented a very small amount of leather. And actually, the bags now may cost us more since the leather cutters spend extra time placing various scars and brands, which they didn't do before.
Can I see what it will look like before I buy it since this makes the leather so much different from bag to bag?
We have some pictures of the sorts of marks that might be on your bag, but we don't have shots of every piece. We wouldn't ever send out something that we wouldn't send to our own mom and dad. You'll love what you get.
Is this truly cooler leather or are you just trying to save some money on cheaper hides?
I'm pretty sure that if you ask anyone who's been watching Saddleback for any length of time, they'll tell you that we're not so much about the money as we are about creating things that bring people joy. It's art and it's quality and we just like it. It makes us happy. And don't forget, Saddleback has a steady history of constantly improving quality in design and materials. There have been several changes to designs that cost us more money to make, but that we did for no other reason than to raise the quality bar. It just seems like the right thing to do. So, to go against everything that we are known for, stand for and teach would be really inconsistent and pretty risky too. And the hides are the same expensive quality hides that we've used for years, but we're just not cutting out as many of the stories.
If this is so great--as you say--why are you the only ones doing this?
I suspect that other companies think that nobody would like it and they're not willing to take the risk to learn if it's true or not. Also, there are so many variables in the marks and scars on each hide that it's very difficult to teach a person which ones to cut out and which ones to leave. It could get very expensive if the cutters aren't trained well and they allowed some of those nasty looking lumpy scars onto the bags.
Can I still buy the old style if I just don't like this change?
Once we're out, we're out, but surely you'll be able to find some on eBay as people are wanting to sell theirs so they can buy one of these.
Will the colors be different?
Tobacco and Carbon are different, but Coffee and Chestnut are the same.
Is the leather going to feel different besides just looking different?
It's the same leather with a different look.
I bought a Tobacco bag 6 months ago but now I want this new Tobacco. Can I trade?
I would suggest that you either sell yours on eBay, which you may get more for, or you look into aging your bag more rapidly. Get on Youtube to see techniques on how to age leather. Remember you loved that bag enough to buy it. You may be pleasantly surprised. The only difference between this tobacco and our last tobacco is the amount of clear and natural oils and waxes on the hide.
