Slim Fit is the new word not he street for great fashion and that you are a fit person! this bag is that! it's slim and fit in all ways, it's brutally well crafted like all the SBL shit! it's awesome, it's sexy, it's low profile in the crowds.... I have 2 large one, a carbon black (discontinued) and a Tobacco and I love them! they are amazingly easy to carry and use!
So glad I bought this. I bought a large because I have a 17 MBP that I occasionally need to carry. I carry this bag everyday in a large city were I have to walk quite a bit and take cramped public transportation. I carry 4 thin text-books, a large Moleskin notebook, a pen/pencil bag and a charger for my phone. Everything fits with room to spare. It is heavy; I am glad that I did not buy the full size briefcase as I may not be man enough to drag it around all day. I was able to fold up the incredibly long strap and it looks good and tucked away. Would rather save for 5 years to have a briefcase like this, than settle for a different product.
If you are looking for an extremely durable bag, this is it. I am extremely pleased and sure they will argus about it after I'm dead.
I'm coming up on my one year anniversary of ownership of this wonderful bag. Holds up in a manner in which I don't believe I will be able to take advantage of the industry leading warranty. One unanticipated outcome is that I started to bring my lunch to work. Avoiding the cafeteria, packing healthy, and in general subscribing to a healthier diet has lead to a 20 lb weight loss! Thanks Saddleback!
It's been two years since I purchased my Large Thin Briefcase. From the time I opened it, I have been waiting to write this review. I wanted to write a review for it immediately just based on the leather smell when I opened the package for the first time. I decided to wait and use it for a while and see how it works. Two years later it has discoloured to a darker tobacco colour. Simply love what its turned into. It still feels as solid as the day I got it. I still get compliments on it, often from the same people. This bag has travelled with me through a few airports, I often keep a closer eye on this bag over any other, its just that nice that someone would love to swipe it from me. I use it every single day to take my Mac and iPad with me to work and back home. This briefcase has worked without flaw. Yes its a bit clunky and heavy, but thats what makes it so awesome! I can now tell that what Dave says is true. This will last a lifetime! I've looked at many leather bags since I've purchased this briefcase and NEVER have I found one to be built to the same brute strength that this is. Many often look the part, but then when you get closer, you realize its not the same. It's at that point I know that the briefcase I purchased is the LAST one I'll ever buy. I can truthfully say I really gave a lot of thought before spending the money I did on it... weeks to be honest. I'm glad I bought it, I have ZERO, nada, zip, zilch, naught regrets.
I bought this (medium / dark coffee brown) as a gift to myself for a new job which had me moving to one of the largest cities in the country and living downtown. I walk to work every day so this is my main case.
1. HIGH, high quality. It's built like a Sherman tank. It's not the "soft" leather you find on competing products. I did buy the leather oil/conditioner sold on here however haven't used it yet.
2. You'll get compliments. I get 2-3 a week, mostly because it sticks out in a sea of canvas and company branded stuff.
3. See number 1.
1. The strap is too long. If you use the higher holes in the strap in effort to "shorten" it, the end of the strap will stick out past the clasp. Because of this, it will start to curl.
2. Having only one loop on the strap is a bummer too. Again, if you use the high holes in effort to have a shortened strap (so it hangs above your waist), the loop on the strap is position so high you'll have a large amount of slack flopping around. I used a velcro cord wrapper and positioned it low to mitigate the flopping around.
3. Some of the stitching on the strap is starting to fray.
3. If you are one to carry a ton of "stuff", this isn't the bag for you. Ultimately the lack of pockets and storage has been a good thing for me as I've simplified what I carry each day, but again - if you need all sorts of pockets, look elsewhere.
In the end, I guess most of my beef is with the strap but that's important piece of a bag thus I'm deducting one star - your mileage on the strap may vary. I wish the review template on here allowed for pics so you could see what I'm illustrating above.
Back in 2007 I purchased the large classic briefcase at the urging of a friend. What a great bag. I used it for quite some time and really enjoyed it. However, my job changed and I started to look for something smaller, easier to carry every day, in and out of meetings, and easier to handle traveling. I found this bag on the website in 2012 and decided it was for me. I initially ordered the medium, received it, thought it was too small, and switched it for the large thin briefcase. It was as much fun opening this briefcase as it was the original in 2008.
The chestnut color was fantastic and it allowed me to utilize it both in the field and in the corporate offices. There are several things to note. After using this briefcase almost daily since 2012 I have noticed the leather is becoming softer and more pliable. I use the leather milk twice a year, and it really brings back the original depth of color. PLUS, you have the added scrapes and scratches from use that add to the overall look.
The shoulder strap is quite long, however I have doubled it over at the end, zip tied it, and there is not a problem. I have also started to use a small zippered hard case (sunglass size) that holds my mouse and MiFi device easily. I carry my computer and cord, three medium sized moleskin books (with Saddleback covers) and one large moleskin with out a problem. I have found the bag weight is really not an issue (I'm about 6' and 185lbs). It just takes some getting used to the feel.
Since purchasing this case, we have purchased one for my son, who has started his own "Saddleback" addiction with moleskin covers, wallet, business card holders, etc.
The construction, the style, and the overall endurance of the bag is really fantastic. I enjoy using it every day. The bad part is that in your travels, you start comparing your Saddleback bag to what others are carrying, and feel sorry for them (LOL).
Thanks for reading this review, I hope it really helps. God bless.....
After poring over every single review, video, image, etc, I finally decided to pull the trigger. It took me several days to decided from the beautiful front pocket briefcase and the handsome thin briefcase. Honestly I was on the fence and had no idea which was I was going to fall. As luck had it, a 10% off large thin briefcase in DCB (Dark Coffee Brown) was posted on DD (Dave's Deals) and I scooped it up. The shipping process and fast and painless. I opened up the box and the bag was beautiful. I didn't see any issues on the bag that deserved the 10% decrease, but I was certainly not going to argue the fact. The large thin briefcase easily fits my 15 inch dell precision workstation, journal, bible, several books and my lunch. I have never been a take my briefcase everywhere with me kind of guy but now I look for reasons to bring it along. As cliche as it sounds it makes me feel cultured when I carry it. I know these bags are a huge investment but they are so worth it. I absolutely cannot wait to purchase more of these products down the road. Do yourself a favor and pick one up. You will not regret it.
I've used this bag during most every workday since 2009. This bag is hardly showing any wear, though LOTS of character! The only 'problem' I have had with it is that every now and then, with the way that it gets laid in my truck, I pick up the strap to grab my bag and one of the clasps connecting the bag and the strap releases. It releases because it brushes up against the release mechanism, not because its breaking. Only annoying a few times a year. I'm sold on these products and wish I had more money to spend on myself!!!
This is an amazing piece. I have my 13"laptop in it, together with my SBL Moleskine cover, external hard drive and some nick nacks. The combination of pigskin and cow leathers make it super sturdy. The new ones come with suede side of pigskin, which I actually prefer in a briefcase like this since you probably do not have to wipe it clean that many times. My passport wallet has the rougher side of pigskin and I can say that this is better. Like others have said, the smell is intoxicating. The stitching is flawless. I've just held it on my lap every evening just looking at it. I ordered the dark coffee brown which is a great color and also has virtually no scarring.
Backpack mode works well and I've taken it to work on my bicycle already. You'll have to reverse one of the shoulder pads to make it right in backpack mode, but that's fine.
For a simple briefcase, there is no better option.
This past weekend I just received my firtst Saddleback Leather (SBL) briefcase, the Thin Briedcase Medium in chestnut. Everything about this bag screams excellence. I love the simple yet classic design, the perfect weight, the smell, the color. I tried justifying all the reasons I should keep it and bottom line is that although this bag may grow on me, it will not grow with me... and I'm not talking about it not aging beautifully.
What does it fit?
You've probably seen all the youtube videos on this bag to make sure you can fit all your stuff, no?
I can see how people who buy a classic briefcase or front pocket would want to downsize to this one. If I worked in environments such as law firms, corporate offices or in any setting that requires light packing this would be the bag for me. The medium fits my 13 MacBook Pro Retina in its SBL MacbBook Air sleeve, a couple notebooks along the laptop (in the same compartiment arranged side by side), a large book (900 pages) in the front compartment along with a couple smaller items. If you plan to pack your MacBook power supply with the extended cable, there is no room for a mouse in that pigskin interior pocket.
This may sound silly, but when you pack the bag with a 2-3 books and your laptop, there is no room for a bagged lunch and as a student this was a big one for me.
What I wish someone told me before pulling the trigger:
Everyone seems to sing the same song, "if you think about it, just buy it and you won't regret it." I can see why they say that from a quality and worthwhile investment standpoint. But here is what I wish someone told me: measure your current bag!!! Duh! For years I carried a 17" Thule nylon bag that finally gave up. When I got the 14" 3/4 SBL bag it felt small, almost too small in comparissoon to what I trained my mind to think is a normal ratio. If this will your be your only briefcase and if you didn't just change career paths, imho I think your new bag should fit at least as much stuff as before, otherwise it will feel like a downgrade. So yes, I returned it and will wait a little longer to purchse the Front Pocket Large in chestnut. I decided to not go for the classic because it is at the other extreme... measuring twice the width of the thin briefcase.
What I wish I knew about returns:
Your retun shipping cost for will vary depending where you live: I paid $20 for slowest USPS shiping option from Michigan plus $5 for a $400 insurance on the packet, altogether $25. Thats said, be an infomed shopper or you may end up paying in return fees the diference between your dream bag and the bag you can now afford. So if you have just enough money for a SBL bag but you are not at least 90% sure the medium Thin Briefcase is the right bag for you, I would advise you to wait.
I hope you found this review helpful and that it will serve as a guide in making an informed decisison.
I have been purchasing leather products for several years now...have numerous wallets, coin purses, etc...
I've had three different Classic Briefcases, one large and two medium. I absolutely loved them and all three of them have been with me all over the world. One problem: just too heavy when fully loaded. I was using it for work and even with only the bare essentials it would get very heavy, very fast. Plus, I found it too unwieldy to use on public transportation. To be fair: I am 5'8" on a good day and 145 lbs. just out of the shower...and I broke two vertebrae last year so I am sensitive to weight. I loved all of my Classic Briefcases but ended up selling two of them and finding a home within the family for the other.
Enter the Slim Briefcase. I purchased the medium in black. Fantastic color! my others were either tobacco or dark coffee brown.
Much lighter than the Classic, and I can still carry all of my work essentials. I am able to fit a large padfolio, lunch, Microsoft Surface Pro 4, workout clothes, first aid kit, small umbrella, and a EDC pouch with room to spare. Much lower profile than even the medium Classic and easy to carry. I also like that it is very simple on the outside; plenty of room on the inside. Even enough room for a minimalist to use as a overnight or weekend bag (I could certainly do so).
Over the next two days, this great bag will see service on a day hike through a national park and a visit to one of the Smithsonian museums. Can handle all sorts of duty.
Boardroom to tent. Can handle it all. Pick one up today.
Dave you are a real genius! Like how did you come up with such a product?! Despite what I paid for I shall say that to me it's worth a 100 times more. Every morning I wake up to the joy of wearing my dark coffee large thin briefcase to work. This surely will last me a life time! I wish you long continuation in hard work. Respectfully, Julien.
This is one great bag!!! It's almost too classy for me! I bought the chestnut thin in medium. It smells fantastic and looks even better. The way it's constructed, it's not going to tear up anytime soon. Your products are pricey, but, I can truthfully say, they seem to be worth it.
This is my third big purchase from saddleback. The first was a large classic briefcase in chestnut, second was a medium front pocket backpack in carbon black. I loved the carbon black so much that I went on to get a medium briefcase in carbon black, which is perfect. It is siting on the table right beside me as I type this review, while breathing in the intoxicating leather aroma.
i never write reviews for any other products I buy. Saddleback is the only company I will take 10minutes to write a review for, gladly. Why? Because there is no other briefcase like that. I have looked at all the major brands. The quality is unmatched.
Everything about this briefcase is perfect. Now I have the thin briefcase for days I want to go the office only, or meet clients without carrying the large classic. I use the large classic for the days I go to gym and then to the office. It fits all my gear: water bottle, shoes, wraps, clothes, towels, as well as my office files and papers.
I was debating between the large and the medium ($30 difference) and ended up going for the medium. I did not regret it. The size is just nice. The large would have been too big for me.
If you are reading reviews right now to decide, I say do not hesitate. If you like the corporate look, go for carbon black or chestnut. Both are really sweet colours. Personally, I like black more. If you are a cowboy or the adventurous sort, definitely go for the tobacco. Dark coffee brown in my opinion is the most neutral. Fits well in all situations.
I never ever thought I would buy more than 1, given the high-ish price. Now I have 3.
After this purchase, you will probably need:
1. A backpack to carry around to the coffeeshop on weekends or your off days. The weight distribution is pretty decent.
2. Classic briefcase in the event you need to carry more things. A medium one is better if you are below 6". My large sometimes feel too large. I'm around 6".
3. Wallet and cardholder.
It is going to be pretty sweet.
I bought the briefcase for my husband who is in law school. J loves loves the bag and he is very picky about almost everything. J told me he wants a briefcase that is not too small, not too large, leather preferred, high quality and affordable. Writing my doctoral dissertation would be an easier task ! We (mostly I) search all over and one day I click on saddleback leather website. I am so impressed and jealous with his bag. The leather is thick. The color is handsome. J has a new companion going with him everyday from classroom to courtroom. Oh and when he stopped at a traffic light on a bike wearing the bag as a backpack, people would compliment how amazing his briefcase is ! Thank you so much Saddleback !
With love from Tucson, AZ
I love this bag and everything about it! I bought the black large one and it's absolutely beautiful. I'm looking forward to seeing it age. My main concern before buying it was that someone said it was heavy. Not an issue I can tell you! I have removed one of the paddings from the shoulder strap since I have no plans using it as a backpack. Before buying it I was thinking about maybe removing some of the D-rings at he bottom of the bag since I have no plans strapping anything to it. I now know that I will keep them. They add character to the bag in a nice way.
I bought two wallets at the same time and I must warn you, it's addictive! I'm sure I haven't bought my last Saddleback product.
First and foremost, this is the nicest briefcase I have ever seen, let alone owned!
With the assistance of Liz (who was excellent) I ended up purchasing a medium, chestnut coloured version of this briefcase. It arrived within three days to my home in Canada, which was astonishing. Beware duty and conversion rates, though I can honestly say that even at 1.35 times the price I'd have happily paid more.
The construction of the briefcase is extraordinary, reflecting the design philosophy that they claim to espouse. I can say for certain that these claims are absolutely true.
The inside is far roomier than I had honestly anticipated, even on the medium, with sufficient room for a midsize laptop or notebook. Though it needs some wearing in, it is surprisingly pleasant to have at my side.
If you're going to buy a briefcase, you can't go wrong here. I can honestly say that I am certain they will fight over it when I'm dead. After all, they're fighting over it now!
I purchased the chestnut-coloured thin briefcase as a Father's Day treat for myself from my hot wife and kids. That was just-over two years ago as of the time of writing this review.
Have you ever made a large-ish purchase and then fail to use it, fall out of love with it, and ultimately wish you could have the money back (wiiU)? I can count the times I or my children have played that machine and every time I sit at the TV and see the wiiU there I feel pangs of regret.
Well, my Saddleback briefcase purchase has been the opposite of that experience. It cost as much as a blinged-out WiiU, but every time I pack up my briefcase on my way to a client appointment I feel pride and satisfaction having such a beautiful and finely-made bag to put my computer and work files in.
I am frequently complimented on the bag. People love the quality, the classic design, and the Saddleback story once I tell them about it. The more I use it the better it looks. It looked great after a year and now by two years it's looking perfect. There's little doubt it will last a hundred years or more.
There aren't that many things that I have spent a relatively large amount of money on in my life and two full years later am able to honestly say that I like it more now than I did when I first got it. I could have spent more on a high-end briefcase at a luxury-brand shop and I would have bought something that was trendier and would have gone out-of-style --- that is if the lower-grade leather lasted long enough. There is tremendous value in Saddleback briefcases because of the quality and the timeless look. I won't likely have to buy another briefcase for the remainder of my career. So was my thin briefcase really that expensive? Not at all.
I don't want my kids to fight over when I'm dead, so I guess I'll have to buy one more Saddleback product to save my children's relationship come Will-reading time.
I got the medium thin briefcase in tobacco and I absolutely love it! It is the perfect size for just about any professional. My laptop, padfolio, folders, books, and essentials fit perfectly in it. I prefer it over SB's classic briefcase because it is much lighter and simpler. I also chose it over the thin front pocket briefcase because it is nice not having to deal with multiple buckles. This is absolutely the best briefcase I have ever had!
Have both the medium and large case in carbon. Bring back carbon! It doubles as a rugged traveling companion on the sea and in the air but works equally well in the boardroom. Practical and easy to use. The strap snaps open and closed with ease. My golden retrievers paw print is on the front cover. Exceptional case.
Just received a Large Thin Chestnut Briefcase for my daughter's law school graduation. Am very pleased with the Quality, Expedient Delivery, and Exceptional Customer Service. This is my third purchase in the last eleven months. Bought a Large Classic Chestnut Briefcase for myself, a Medium Chestnut Notepad Holder for my daughter, and now the Large Thin Chestnut Briefcase. It's a real pleasure dealing with Saddleback Leather. They make a great product, second to none. I only wish I had purchased your products earlier in my career. Thanks again.
I bought the large Thin Briefcase. Originally, I had opted for the medium, but after receiving shipment notification, I was told that Saddleback was actually sold out. Apparently someone bought my case out from under me at virtually the very second I completed my purchase, thus confusing the inventory system and allowing them to think the order had been processed. To the lucky winner: enjoy it in good health. I'm certain you will.
In dealing with customer service, any frustrations I might have had (few and minor) were quickly allayed. Rachel was the rep I had the pleasure of speaking to, and she was incredible. Customer service (in its most general sense) simply does not get any better. After deciding I just couldn't wait the two weeks for my bag to ship out, I coughed up the extra few bucks for the large. Rachel stayed on the phone to confirm the last bag in stock went to me, cheering me along all the way through checkout. (If I bought it out from under anyone else, I do apologize for your loss.)
As for the bag, I couldn't be happier. I won't echo what everyone else has already. Though I could.
Saddleback is a great company, for their product but eve. More so for customer service.
I have had my medium dark coffee brown thin briefcase for over a month now. It carries my 13 inch laptop and Ipad and a few other items (mouse, cables, sandwich box etc). I don't carry a lot of books as I pdf most things as an academic, so the medium size suits me fine, but I can still fit a book or two in if I need it. I usually buy a lot of my leather goods locally here in Australia, but after having seen this online I am glad that I bought it. Nothing beats it. Smells great, thick leather and well stitched. I love carrying it around. I don't use the leather strap, although its handy to have if travelling, but the steel-loop rings are great. I am a regular guy size wise, so I don't find it weighty at all. Its tough as nails, as well as being all quality and aesthetically appealing, so that's what counts. Will buy again. Many thanks.
I have one in carbon. I use it to carry my 13" MacBook Pro. It looks great! It's a heavy bag, but very well made. I only wish Saddleback was not discontinuing carbon. It looks great when it develops a patina on it. Black just doesn't cut it for me. It doesn't age as nicely. Bring back carbon please!
