I like the look of this belt but I do not like how thick it is , It makes for a very uncomfortable belt... The width is fine but the belt itself is extremely thick.
I purchased the black Tow Belt (32 inch) and am extremely pleased with my purchase. The belt is incredibly well made and is exceptionally thick and stiff. This belt would work well for a holster or other heavy duties. I have been wearing mine now for a few days and it is beginning to soften. I may use some No. 1 Conditioner to accelerate this process. The holes, as described in the video, are tighter together than a typical belt but work very well to give a more custom fit than I am used to wearing. With the quality of this belt I would not be surprised if it outlives me (I'm in my forties). $130 may seem like an awful lot for a belt, I know, but I think it's actually worth it. I plan to buy another one in tobacco in the future.
I received my belt this past Friday. The first thing you'll notice is the weight and thickness of the belt. It's terrific to have a nice piece of leather. You'll enjoy strapping this thing on every time you wear it.
The reason I only gave it four stars is because after just two days (I wore it on Saturday and Sunday), the back of a rivet fell off the belt (remember, this is the belt that my kids will be fighting for someday--well after two days, I was very surprised). Since it's the backside of the belt, I'm not very concerned, but was surprised none the less. The second small complaint is that the first two punched holes on the belt are too short to be secured down, so you have to use at minimum the third hole for the belt to be secured (make sure you purchase the right size--which I think is a bit tricky.
I'm glad I purchased it though, and would definitely recommend it.
I recently ordered the Tow Belt 1 1/2” in chestnut recently. I am a size 34” waist, so logically I figured the size 34” belt would be ideal. I was severely mistaken.
The belt is actually about 43.5” long, 42” without the buckle. Not including the buckle, the holes are at: 34” (very last hole), 37” (middle hole), and 40” (first hole), respectively. That translates into me wearing the very last hole as I am a 34” waist, producing a comic effect as there is a massive length of belt sticking out to one side. Not good!
In the end, I ordered the Old Bull Belt 1 1/2” in 32” and can wear it properly using the middle hole (without buckle, measures about 35”, a decent fit for my 34” waist), which will replace the tow belt that I will now have to return.
Besides the size snafu (seemingly for all Saddleback Leather Co belts), I have two issues to address about the tow belt itself: it is too thick, and the stitching catches on most belt loops.
To address the first issue: on the one hand, the thickness is actually pretty virile [manly] and stunning, but on the other hand, it creates two ill effects: one, it is painfully difficult to take off. In fact, I have dubbed the tow belt “The Anaconda” because of the way it constricts as one attempts to undo the belt. Two, it does not go gentle into that good [first] belt loop. In fact, it sits rather defiantly on top of it. Like my cat. On everything.
The second issue is just the belt's stitching grates against the fabric of the pant's belt loops. This is especially bad when compounded with the thickness of the belt, which forces the stitching to rub against the forcefully expanded belt loops, and when wearing, for example, linen pants where the belt loops are rather fragile (compared to say, denim).
In summary, it is a 5/5 star belt when it comes to construction, manliness, and durability, but I feel the design is a bit clumsy. It is probably better suited for construction workers and towing airplanes than for people who wear linen pants. And for that reason, I give it 4/5 stars.
To solve both issues, I recommend getting the old bull belt as I did. Briefly: it is just as fashionable, comes in the same width, length, and colors, and seems reasonably durable without any of the obtrusive thickness and stitching. Also, remember to chat with Saddleback's awesome customer service representatives. They will absolutely help you find the right color/fit, just like they did for me in finding the correct (old bull) belt. Cheers!
Brief note on color: the chestnut is just a reddish version of the dark coffee (or perhaps chocolate) brown. They are both dark, but neither are dark enough to be considered black. Pretty much verbatim from the customer service reps; just passing it on.
As many other reviews have already said, this really is the last belt you'll ever need. I doubt I'll ever need or want to replace it.
The way the holes are placed on the belt, though, does not make a lot of sense. They are spaced every 3/4 inch instead of every 1 inch as with other belts, which is great. However, the first three holes are too close to the tip to be of any use. When the buckle is fastened to any of these three holes, the tip either doesn't reach or doesn't snugly remain in the loop next to the buckle. This means that the tip of the belt awkwardly sticks out and/or comes completely undone from the buckle. So, these holes serve no practical purpose. It would make a lot more sense to place these holes further from the tip, to make the sizing more flexible, rather than having them uselessly too close to the tip.
Again, this belt is still indispensable in my book. But a minor design change could make it even better.
I just received my belt today and I must say that I can't stop looking at it. Just like all my other purchases from SBL this item will be fought over when I finally reside on the other side of the dirt.
BTW I purchased the wrong size at first and spoke to the nicest customer service person ever.... I believe her name was Diane and she got me on the right path within 5 minutes.
Thanks SBL for making products that make me believe in getting what I paid for!
I have 2 old bull belts but wanted a belt in the tobacco color so i had to get a tow belt. WOW this thing is thick! You really could tow something with it. I havent worn it yet, but I imagine it might take a little while to break in like me other 2 SBL belts but I expect it to be just as great. If you want a super HEAVY DUTY belt, get this one.
This is what a belt should be...classy, strong, thick enough to not just hold up your pants but also anything you want to strap to it. Bought two in different colors and would not even look for another belt as these are the best I have seen even among custom made belts.
My first casual brown belt was purchased about 20 years ago, full grain leather, strong, weathered well. I thought I could never get rid of it. However my new tow belt has blown away all expectations. This belt is thick and durable, yes, there will be a break-in period on this belt! And I can't wait to break it in, and to see the finish get nicely worn in. I just wish it had a "born on" date stamped somewhere. That way, decades from now when my memory is gone, I can look at the date and see how long I have had the belt! I am actually considering going to a saddle shop to see if they will stamp the date, or at least the year for me!
I know the web site says no removable buckle, but the belt would be that much better with a removable buckle!
So I've bought so many Saddleback products that my family has considered staging an intervention. From bags, pouches, office gear, etc I've owned much of what Saddleback has produced. This one is a major letdown. The other reviews are correct in saying that the holes at the end of the belt are a huge downside. It allows for 0 flexibility as the years go by and severely limits the "lifetime" function of this belt. For a company that prides themselves as having a 100 year warranty this belt seems shockingly shortsighted. The upside is that the company seems prone to change and improve their products based on functionality so there's hope that this will eventually be remedied. My advice is to wait until a new and improved version of this belt is produced and then buy it. That's what I'm waiting for as I send my belt back for a refund.
When I was considering this belt, my wife asked why it was called a "tow belt." I told her that it should be strong enough to pull something if I ever needed to (clearly making it an absolute necessity). This is most certainly the case. I've been very impressed with the quality. It's noticeably heavier than any belt I've ever owned and the hardware feels very high quality. It is much thicker than other belts which was a bit unusual at first but I quickly became accustomed to it.
This was my first purchase from Saddleback and I was very happy with the product and service. Email communication was good. Delivery was fast. Product is excellent. I seriously doubt I will ever need to take advantage of the outstanding warranty - but it's nice to have just in case.
Perfect thickness. Great (INGENIOUS) adjustability from the buckle end, not the pointy tip end. Brilliant, I tell you. I have a black one and a brown one since I am old-fashioned and like my belt to match my boots. I guess I have had these belts for three or four years now and I wear one or the other almost every day. I do have one complaint about Saddleback Leather Co.; they have made it impossible for me to spend money with any other company on leather goods. So I will say, like I heard one other person in a belt review say, I would purchase another black and another brown belt made by Saddleback Leather Co. if they were 1.25 inches wide for dress pants. All the dress pants belts I look at suck eggs now that I have my Saddleback belts. Thanks Dave!
This belt is everything they claim it to be. You could tow a boat with it. I wear it with jeans only. It feels a little too intense to be worn with chinos. You could wear it with duck chino I am sure but no light weight material. Unbelievable quality. I really appreciate that manufactures like this exist. The company seems to be very transparent and if what they claim is true then I want to support them more. You could easily spent 93 dollars on a piece of junk belt from Jcrew or whatever menswear store is big right now, chances are you would get a crap product made in hell (i.e a slave shop in a third world country). Not only do you get a belt that will last you a life time but you can buy it with a clear conscious.
I am a 54 year 6"2" Electrician. I purchased the carbon Tow belt on Davey's deals. It was 25% off because of the out of date color, I guess. Because the belt is flawless and made well. I ruined 2 other leather belts in the Las Vegas hot summer this year. I thought I would try S/B Tow belt. It is the best belt I ever had. I will buy another belt to use when I am not at work. At my age I am not buying junk any more.
Please do what I did....I looked all over the web for the best quality belt for around 90.00 and kept coming back to here. Do not be afraid to buy it for yourself or for someone you care about.
I also purchased the wallet here and am very happy with that too.
My wife purchased this belt for me. The build quality and materials are great. Unfortunately, I'm disappointed that the last 2 holes (on the end) are merely for show. If you try to use either one of the last two holes, you will be unable to tuck the tail-end into the little leather loop. The tail-end will just poke straight out.
I'm a little worried about the thickness of the small leather loop. Wrestling the thick belt under there could cause that thin leather loop to wear out, but I trust their warranty.
I would have preferred a removable buckle. If people have an issue with the screw rivets coming loose, SBL could have put some Loctite on the threads before attaching the buckle.
Just received the tow belt in Tobacco, very thick and sturdy. I wanted this belt to use as a gun belt for a CCW. After wearing with my holstered Glock, I can say that I am very happy with its performance. It holds the weight of the gun very well and looks fantastic. Sometimes I forget I'm carrying a gun when wearing OWB. If you're looking to use this belt as a gun belt I think you will be very happy with it. Now I want one in Chestnut. Thanks SBL!
First off, trust the sizing tip for belts, it worked perfectly. Great looking and high quality belt. It is a thick bugger, and handles a field holster great. Well done!
I read the other reviews talking about how thick and sturdy this thing is before I bought it, and it's almost indescribable. I still couldn't believe my eyes and hands when I pulled it out of the box. Between my wife and I we probably have over two dozen saddleback products in the house, so I'm well acquainted with the build quality, and this still blew me away. I imagine it will break in after a while, a crazy long while, but as of now it's like wearing a fitted hula hoop around the top of my jeans once it's buckled. In all honesty, I seriously doubt I'll ever buy another belt the rest of my life for every day wear. Dress belts are another story, but I do my best to make sure I don't need to wear one of those....
Yep. What a belt - thick, built to last and beautiful, like all the SB products I have ordered! This should indeed last a lifetime (unless I decide to really use it for towing). Sizing works: my jean size is 34 and I bought a 34 in chestnut - it's the same length as my usual belts that I have bought one size up from jean size, i.e., size 36. The SB Tow Belt fits at the 5th hole wearing Docker's dress khakis to work. But there is just a little less belt left beyond the belt's own keeper than I am used to, maybe because these belts are thicker than anything else I have. Dave said in his video and/or sizing that it fits at the 4th. But candidly, it's post-holiday and I am a bit over. Incentive to get back to fighting weight. Keep up the great work Saddleback!
This tobacco tow belt is my favorite belt. It's thick, stiff, and hefty. Makes other belts seem wimpy and girly.
Bring back the removable buckles!
As a newly minted doctor, I needed to start looking the part, and my decade-old beat up looking belt probably wasn't helping. This belt does the job. Holds up the pants, but looks good in a classic kind of way. After a year or so of use the only change in the belt is that it has gotten softer and fits a little better.
The only complaint I have is that it is just barely too wide for a standard hospital pager to securely clip on. But I if that's enough reason for you to not get this belt, you probably shouldn't be looking at this company anyway.
I've probably purchased many belts that I thought had real "quality," but this one beats them all. Compared to the store bought variety, this belt has few peers. I bought the coffee brown color, and the belt can't compare to the others in my now, low brow collection. Now, I understand why people are surprised when they purchase directly from an expert in materials vs a contrived look in the store. I'll be buying at least one or two more belts in this same model. They are substantial, look incredible, and are built to last. You won't be disappointed.
Saying that this belt is the best belt ever is an understatement. EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BELT IS GREAT EVEN THE BUCKLE!! Honestly, I don't know what else to say because words doesn't do it justice. I will say to anyone who is reading these reviews, get the belt you will not be disappoint and you will not be able to describe how great it is without actually showing it off.
I'm very happy that I came across this company!! Great work to all involved!!
Now that is one heck of a belt ! I was getting tired to be chewing through so many poor quality belts. Even the real leather expensive ones didn't cut it for me. When I saw that Saddleback was making some, I didn't hesitate one bit. It is very wide, very thick and very, very sturdy. Worn it daily for more than a year and it hasn't moved. The size isn't easy to get right though, I'd advice contacting the customer service if you're unsure. But don't worry, they're adorable. I had to return mine for a smaller one and even though there were some parcel problems it went without a hitch.
Now unfortunately I've chosen to drop belts in favour of suspenders so I don't wear it anymore. But I'm sure waiting for Saddleback Leather suspenders !
Just received my second tow belt. This time in tobacco, as the first was in black and purchased over a year ago. That will be it, for any more belts, I guess for the rest of my life, which I hope will be at least for the one hundred year guarantee. Great belts and fantastic quality.
