I was excited to acquire this belt and was hoping that it would be my Final Belt. Unfortunately 'Carbon Black' as it is often called here does not seem very black. On my belt as least it is what would be more accurately described as 'smoky grey'. This is unfortunate as I have never really felt the lack of a grey belt all that keenly and so don't know what I can do with it. Its appearance is made all the more disappointing as not only is the back of the belt a nice black, but a good chunk of the front is also black causing the unfortunate colour of the front to stand out all the more. The images on the site seem highly misleading to me (though I fully acknowledge that my monitor may have been at fault) they made it seem more of a slightly pale black as opposed to the darkish grey that was received, really the whole belt just feels like it was accidentally made the wrong way around which is unfortunate.
In terms of quality of materials it seems quite sturdy and the sizing information on the site is accurate. It is a good, sturdy, comfortable belt that but for the colour would have been perfect. I really wish I could return it and replace it with a nice Chestnut or Coffee Brown belt but unfortunately given the high shipping charge I had to pay to get it to Canada by the end of that I would have spent more money on shipping than I did on the belt itself.
This is a really nice, solid belt. It's true to the size, I wear 36 width pants and the size 36 belts fits perfectly. I also own a
"Classic Four Stitch Belt" which has the exact same size. The "Tow Belt" is a bit thicker and heavier then the "Four Stitch", but I'm not worried that either one of them will break. I wish saddleback would make a 1.25in wide belt as they look better with chinos and other not denim pants... 1.5in belts won't fit dress pants at all.
I bought the tobacco Tow belt about a month ago and it has been wrapped around my waist every working day since. The quality is what you expect from SBL - top notch (pun intended). It is nice and thick, the metalwork is solid, but unobtrusive. It goes into and strips out of the belt loops on chinos and jeans with ease - an absolute joy to use and wear.
The gaps between the holes is closer than usual, and that is actually a good thing - much easier to find a good snug fit.
I have had a load of 'high quality' belts before, but they all feel cheap and flimsy compared to this belt. If you are in the market for a new belt - I cannot recommend this one enough (better even than the old bull belt - another great product). If you are simply browsing and undecided on SBL - this is a good product to start with.
the only problem I have (I now have 7 SBL pieces - 5 bags and 2 belts), is that because these things will last longer than me, I need to come up with very creative reasons why I need to buy some more! Any tips, gratefully received :)
I wanted the tobacco color and so bought the tow belt. This is a belt of substance. Just having it around your waist makes you stronger...imparting a feeling of invulnerability. Why, with a tow belt, I believe one really can tow a locomotive. This belt tames locomotives, enhances self confidence, and holds up your pants.
I got 2 belts, the dark coffee and the black. I couldn't be happier with the dark coffee. It's perfect.
The black however is actually more like grey. The back side of the belt is perfect, but the front side of the belt isn't black enough for my intended use. It's unfortunate, because I spent a while trying to figure out how I could darken the belt to make it work. Ultimately, I decided that it's just too much money to spend time to fix the belt. I guess I just have to keep hunting for a black belt.
After I received my first Tow Belt (dark coffee brown), I soon ordered another, the Carbon color belt was my second purchase, and although I love both belts I would like to have one that is true black. Awesome belt, awesome customer service!
This is a nice looking belt.
I'm probably not a typical customer...but this is, actually, the least stiff belt I own. I was surprised by that. So far, it supports my 76 oz. Belt load comfortably. So, it seems to be stuff enough.
It does, indeed, have nine adjustment holes--but only six of them are usable. The hole run almost to the very tip of the belt; leaving no tail. (You can see this in the photos, but I failed to understand its import.) Using the fourth hole, the tail of the belt barely engages the keeper. If you used one of the first three holes, the tag end would stick out from the buckle. I'm perplexed by this arrangement. Luckily, the belt just fits me on the fourth hole, so I can wear it. Had I ordered one inch shorter, I'd be dieting to make it work. (Which migHt not be a bad idea.)
I definitely can't recommend it at this price with its current defect.
I wear this belt with everything: dress pants, work pants, jeans, hiking pants. I don't leave home without this or my old bull belt. I don't want to be caught in a situation where I need it and don't have it. It's classy, durable, and it just feels manly to have a real belt.
Got the belt from Dave's Deals, not sure why it was on there other than it's the older style with screws instead of rivets. Love the belt.
I have seen people complain about the holes near the end of the belt. Those are for if you chunk up or eat too much Thanksgiving dinner. Most likely you should never have to use them. Just purchase the belt according to the sizing chart they have here and you're good to go.
This is the nicest belt that I have ever seen and owned. This is also my first "real" belt that I've bought from a leather company and not a department store. The chestnut leather is beautiful as always and the build quality is excellent. I own other Saddleback products and I've never been disappointed by any of them. This belt is VERY thick and sturdy. Take the thickest belt you own and sew three of them together. That's the Tow Belt! It has no problem serving daily duty and easy keeps my pants up when I'm wearing my gun.
If you're thinking about this belt, just buy it. You won't be disappointed and it will definitely out live you.
I have acquired a few belts recently and I am still looking for the perfect one. My Tow Belt is pretty good and there is a lot to like about it. The quality of the leather, craftsmanship and the hardware are all top notch. I also like the color (dark coffee brown, I have a matching iPad case).
There is one thing that leaves me scratching my head is the placement of the holes. There are 9 holes and I wear it right in the middle, in hole #5. This is perfect as it leaves some wiggle room in both directions; if I gain some weight or my descendants are skinnier than me, the belt will continue to fulfill its purpose. In practice, there is not much room for expansion as the last 2-3 holes are really close to the edge of the belt. Someone wearing the belt in the last few holes would not be able to tuck the end in the leather loop. If the belt was longer by 1-2 inches and there were no holes in that part, it would be indeed the perfect belt. It would be more functionnal and also look better.
I purchased a tow belt in chestnut a couple of weeks ago. As I anticipated, it is a most impressive piece of leather! I don't know what "broken in" means with regard to this belt, but it already feels very comfortable when I put it on, which is pretty much everyday. If you use saddleback's measurement tool, you should get a belt that fits properly. My only caveat is that it is an extremely hefty accessory, and although I'm not a small man at 5'8" and 200 pounds, it takes up a lot of real estate around my 34" waist. I suspect it would overwhelm an even slightly smaller man.
Tow belts are great! I have two, black and chestnut. The previous generation used four screws instead of the rivets at the buckle which I miss on the current design.
Well, this is the best belt I've ever owned. It's worth every cent. Not only is it beautiful, but it has a fabulous stiffness to it that introduced me to what belts should have been doing all along for my pants: actually holding them in place. You will not regret purchasing this belt, but your friends may since they will be so envious. My one point of critique is the screws on the buckle side can become loose and fall out. One of mine was eventually lost, but SBL immediately sent me several replacements, free of charge, with instructions for how to fix them (use Loctite). Still no regrets!
Got the belt as a Xmas gift. I know quality when I see it. My first impression was in agreement with SaddleBack's logo...my brothers will fight over this when i'm dead. Second thought was being confident I could hitch it to my truck to tow a boat. Currently saving to buy some luggage b/c it's obvious this company doesn't mess around.
I started wearing raw denim jeans about 6-8 months ago. I came to the realization that my day-to-day belt didn't match the beauty of raw denim. Yes, it was a decent belt. Yes, it worked fine. But I didn't care for it. I was also used to having to replace a belt after 2-3 years of use, at most.
I realized that I had never owned a good belt in my life, and decided to start shopping. I looked, and eventually found Saddleback. I bought this belt in tobacco brown, and doubt that I'll ever look back. I didn't really believe all of the reviews talking about how sturdy it is, because I'd never been exposed to this kind of quality, but I do now. I love this belt, and I can pretty much guarantee that anyone would. Buy it. It's beautiful.
Do you know what the problem is when it comes to having 'The Best'? ..
.. Is that, you'll end up having problems with 'current' and 'present' ..
.. cos' you will have to decide to either throw, give it away or sell it somehow..
.. away with the current and in comes the new.. (It's a syndrome, I know).
I know I won't be buying anymore belts for now and in the near future.
Okay, that's a lie.
I might just get some more in different colours.
Or when I suddenly, drastically change in size that I needed my entire wardrobe changed.
The 100year warranty is sufficient to taking care of whatever problems I might face in the coming years.
Since I don't intend on using my tow belt as a safety harness or using it to raise my sofa off the floor (just so that it would be easier for me to dust the floor underneath it), I don't see myself contacting customer services for any claims and such in the next 30years to come?
Seriously, you're still reading this?
Stop wasting your time and just buy it already!! Since you're covered by Dave's 100% Satisfaction Guarantee, who cares man? Go ahead and just click BUY! If you don't like it, return it for a refund. It is that simple.
If you like it so much, you'll end up writing unnecessary stuff on here just to make a point.
The belt is extremely thick. From the way it is constructed, you'll know why Dave gave it 100years guarantee.
As usual, I opted for chestnut (my favourite colour amongst the others available).
My waist size is about 28", so I was indeed reluctant to get one (afraid that I might have to ship it back to USA for a refund - very troublesome thing to me, at least). Conctacted customer services a couple of times and finally decided to just go ahead with their smallest, 30".
When it finally came, I got it on immediately on my pants and BOOM! Perfect! Sizing is great (i've got only a couple of centimetres worth of tail). The way the holes are made (ie their spacing from one hole to the other), you can't get it from other belt-makers (okay, fine, maybe you could if you have it CUSTOM-made).
I would normally have problems finding belts for me (and NO, I don't consciously shop at the kids department). This belt though, SPOT ON!!
The ambrosia of the leather, just shouts QUALITY!
Stitching and craftsmanship, (seroiusly? do I really need to say anymore?), brilliant!
One thing you gotta take note though, due to its thickness, you might not be able to loop the loose ends through the first belt loop on your pants. I had my the belt tail going over that belt loop since there was no way I could squeeze it in.
Maybe because I had to wear my size 30" belt in the 3rd hole (3rd from the 1st hole, ie the tightest setting I can get) and that kinda created a slight offset of the buckles.
Since the buckles itself is secured by one piece of leather folded over, it becomes really really thick for my belt loop to accomodate for the tail.
Also, I love how smooth the inner part of the belt is (about as smooth as the outside). As Dave puts it in the description "for sliding on and off easily". Very useful for someone like me - who removes belts from pants after each wear.
The edges of the leather are finished. Not the norm from SBL. But after contacting customer services (yes, I had to contact them with regards to this and was prepared to do an exchange, not a refund) they told me the coating was done to protect wearers' clothes from dye transfer should the leather gets too wet and somehow the dye would transfer out.
If you're cool with the belt (eventhough) it has finished edges, then grab it. If some finishing of edges bugs you, then stay away from this belt.
If you're just looking around for cool belts, then grab this one.
If you're tired of shopping around for belts, grab this and that search stops here.
I have owned a Tow Belt (tobacco brown) for about a year. As with all Saddleback products, it is of extremely high quality and is beautiful. At 1.5" it fits almost all belt loops but is thick and substantial. I use it as a service belt to carry a Sig 229 every day, and it holds my pistol better than any other belt I have owned. I can't say enough about Dave's products - they are rugged and durable while looking great. Saddleback clearly employs true artisans who do very impressive work.
This is one of those times where you think you know quality and all that goes away when you are shown quality. Don't hesitate, just click buy and you will be happy.
I was a little hesitant at first to buy this belt. I've always been the kind of guy who buys the typical $20 belt at the department store. But after reading the reviews and watching some of Dave's videos I decided to go ahead and buy one. And man am I glad I did. This belt feels like a belt should feel. It's thick (but will go through a belt loop a second time after being buckled), comfortable and looks great with all types of jeans. I ordered the Carbon Black and plan on getting another in Dark Coffee Brown soon. Thanks, Dave, for the awesome products!
By far....this is the finest belt I've ever owned. While not the sort of belt one wears with a fine custom suit....that's ok!.....because I don't own one. But if you need something exceedingly rugged and good looking for jeans, cargoes, or khakis, this is the belt for you. It's particularly great if you're prone to hanging miscellaneous hardware from it. I got mine in the chestnut color and it's perfect. I followed the sizing instructions and measured a belt that I normally wear, and then added two inches to accommodate an IWB holster. That brought it up one full size and it works perfectly. I'll be ordering a black one soon.
They are by far the thickest and coolest belts that I own. At first you will be surprised at how thick it is. When you first get this belt you can literally make it sit completely straight and horizontal using only 2 fingers, but it will quickly form to the shape of your body with regular use. Zero complaints.
I have one in carbon black and I love it. I was sick of having to buy a new belt every year or two. It is clear by Saddleback belt will never wear out.
I easily switched out the buckle for a polished nickel one, since I wanted to go for a dressier look and now I have one beld that goes great with jeans or a suit.
I am sad that they are discontinuing carbon black for belts, as the new carbon does not look dressy enough for the office.
I purchased 3 of these in Tobacco, Coffee and Black. the belts look good while wearing a suit or in jeans. I love them and would definitely buy them again. I purchased them back in February and at first they did squeak but after a little break the noises stopped.
The Tobacco has built a lot of character so really think about that before purchasing. Personally I love it.
as far as sizing goes, there are a lot of holes on the belts so it has a lot of room, stick with your pant size and you should be fine. plus you could always cut the belt if you lose a lot of weight in the future.
another nice feature is that you can change out the buckle if you want to make it a little more personal.
This belt is as tough as they say it is and I'm really glad I bought this belt. I've been wearing it every day for over a month and has very minor signs of wear.
My only criticism of this belt is it's super squeaky at the buckle. If you're a student like me people will look over at you when you move around in your chair. I'm thinking about oiling it at the buckle but haven't done it yet.
