This is my third SB product- the leather satchel in dark coffee brown, classic briefcase in black, and now the wrap wallet in black. For the first time buyer, whether for yourself or for gifting, do not let the price or question of craftsmanship deter you from any SB purchase. The quality, durability, and craftsmanship will meet and exceed your expectations. These products are made of high quality materials, sewn with precision, are beautiful to look at, and will last a very long time. Unfortunately, that means you will have to pay a bit more. While SB advertises the durability and utility of their products, they can easily be considered a luxury item.
Wallet size. There's been some reviewers with the too big/too small argument. The dimensions of the wallet are exactly as described. If you are worried about the size of the wallet, cut a thick piece of cardboard into 4" by 4 3/4" dimension and see if it fits into your pocket before you order.
Superficial scratches- the brown leather shows minor scratches more readily. My brown satchel is developing a nice Indiana Jones appearance. My black briefcase and wallet remain flawless. If superficial scratches or patina bother you, purchase the wallet in black.
Build quality and craftsmanship- I'm not sure who Dave is employing to hand sew these items, but I could not find any flaws in the stitching. I've yet to have a loose stitch, fray, or break. There has been no color transfer on my clothing. The credit card slots do have an initial tight fit, but have broken in nicely. Not a single card has developed any bend to them. This is the highest quality wallet I've owned. I appreciate that there is no plastic window for the drivers license. The wallet is big enough to hold multiple cards and cash without feeling overly bulky. This might be a nice 'in between' wallet for you. I keep my wallet in my front pocket of my jeans pretty easily, plenty of cards, and not a ton of bulk.
For the repeat customer who has only purchased briefcases or bags- My only initial disappointment out of the box was the strap. It did seem rather thin because I'm accustomed to the heft of SB leather. For some reason, my expectation was a thick hefty leather. I had concern the strap would wear quickly, but it has not at all. Out of the box, the wallet felt very light and flat pressed, which is the way a wallet should feel. I think that over time, breaking in, it absorbs your body oil and doesn't appear and feel as stiff. The leather feels nice and smooth. After months of being in my pocket, it has shown hardly any wear. It's been a solid wallet and has a unique appearance. I would recommend this product and feel good about my purchase.
Got mine yesterday. As usual with Saddleback good quality very tight like the other products but I'm sure I'll break it in. Is it with $68? Most definatly
I purchased this wallet back in April for myself. This is by far the best wallet I have ever owned, the quality is top notch. I like it so much that I bought my dad and also my father-in-law one for Christmas.
I have this wallet in chestnut and it is absolutely gorgeous. I bought the wallet to use with my smaller bags and I have found that I end up throwing it in with my bigger bags as well. This wallet fits a lot of cash and a good amount of cards as well. It's also really easy to get the cards out to use on a daily basis. When I first got it, the closure was a little stiff and hard to operate, but it's loosened up considerably with time. It still secures the wallet firmly, but now it's not so hard to get the leather piece through the loop. This is a great wallet to purchase if you are looking for one that has a closure. I would highly recommend.
I have been using this wallet for about 3 months and have polished it a few times with mink oil to soften and help break it in. Not a small wallet but carries a lot of cash and enough cards to allow at least six to be carried easily. ID slot is great for driving license. I carry in front pocket of jeans and it is a tight fit but I have got used to it and hardly notice, but I don't wear skinny jeans. The wrap around strap is a great idea and keeps everything secure. I previously used a SB medium bi-fold and this is better. No complaints and highly recommend.
I've been looking for a wallet for months now and was happy to find a couple options on your site. I went with the wrap wallet because it just seemed to cool to pass up. Out of the box, loved the color and the quality- really well made. It seemed to have enough slots for all my cards, cash, etc..
Couple of things to be aware of- it's a square shaped wallet and barely fits in any kind of pocket--pants, inside suit, etc... it will fit but challenging to get out of pocket. In addition, be prepared for a fight to get the cards in and out of the slots...the money barely fits in the long pocket...I do hope the wallet breaks in and becomes more user friendly..
I have this one in the old school Carbon (RIP). I've also owned a couple other Saddleback wallets - and this is by far my favorite and I doubt I'll ever need to buy another one.
I'm not a guy that needs A LOT of stuff in his wallet but more than the ID wallet (which I also have) will allow. I have a handful of debit and credit cards, my ID, business cards and other little scraps of whatever. I really think this is the best wallet design Dave has done. It's just perfect for someone that doesn't need a ton but more than a little. It fits perfectly in the back pocket of my 501's.
One concern I've always had about wallets with ID windows and such is if it's a pain to get in and out. NOT WITH THIS ONE. Of course it took some wear over time but by now (I've had mine for about ... 8 or 9 months I'd guess) it slips in and out easily when needed. Perfectly secure otherwise.
A stack of business cards fits perfectly behind the ID slot.
The design helps keep my cards from bending or breaking; which has been a problem for me with basically every wallet I've ever owned.
The closure strap I think is my favorite part. There's some sort of understated elegance when opening it up. I believe - possibly incorrectly - that there's some sort of nylon support stitched in to prevent stretching. I know Dave does that for a lot of pieces that get wear. It was a little stiff at first but broke in after a month or two of daily use.
Overall, this is my favorite wallet I've ever owned. The design is perfect for what I carry and it of course looks amazing. While I love giving Saddleback my money (and I've given quite a bit) - sadly, I don't think I'll be able to give 'em more for another wallet unless something tragic happens. This one is simply perfect.
I purchased the tobacco trifold wallet as a trial to see if Saddleback's products are as a good as people say. Well let me just say that THEY ARE! Everything about this wallet is solid. As many before me have attested to, the quality is superb from the stitching to the thickness of the leather, and of course that awesome smell of quality tanned leather. I also like the fact that there are no plastic inserts that would tear and have to be replaced. There are ample slots cut into the leather for credit cards and I like the leather tie down used to cinch the wallet shut and Blue's logo. The tobacco coloration allows the natural markings to shine through and I agree with Dave, that adds alot of character to the leather piece. Based on this experience, I also purchased the classic briefcase and a small tote for my wife. I love the products and the story and let me finish by saying don't be afraid of Dave's Deals, I purchased my briefcase and wife's tote with the 10% discount and couldn't tell you why they were discounted.
Let me first say that I have been carrying the same trifold wallet since 1979. It was literally falling apart. I was hoping that this will be the last wallet I would ever buy. If I can figure out how to make it work it will. The quality is certainly there. But my issues are with the size. Let me also say that I was carrying a George Costanza wallet (for those of you who didn't watch Seinfeld it is a wallet that has everything in it and was probably 3" thick....cash, credit cards, pictures, credentials, recites, etc.). I was used to to a THICK wallet but was not prepared for a WIDE wallet. The main problem I have been having with this wallet is that it is too wide to fit in my pants pockets and be easily retrieved....I have to fight to get it out. I have carried it for three weeks and are in hopes that eventually it will loosen up to the point of being easily taken out of my pocket. But as large as this wallet is, it is remarkably low on how much you can put in it. I was used to having the plastic credit card holders that have a tab that slips into the wallet. This wallet only has four slots for credit cards, etc. I knew that when I ordered it, and made a honest attempt to par down the amount of "stuff" I carried in my wallet (out went the pictures of the kids). Even so, I found the slots for credit cards too small to be able to get the credit cards in and out easily....plus I noticed that my credit cards were beginning to take a bend to them. And I noticed I had to seriously limit the already-reduced amount of cards I could carry. My solution was to go back to the plastic credit card holders that I had been using and use the slots in the wallet and the "extra" storage area to hold the plastic holders. This seems to work. But the other part of the wallet being too small is the cash compartment. As large as the wallet is, it is very difficult to get the cash in and out of that compartment. It seems too narrow. I almost have to take all my cash out to be able to see the denomination I am looking for and to be able to get the bills back in straight. Overall I like the design and style of the wallet, but it remains to be seen if it will remain the last wallet I ever purchase.
I have been looking for a replacement full zip around wallet and could never find one I liked. Most were to big or not made well to stand up over time. I purchased the Tri Fold wallet in hopes this would be a good alternative. The wallet is better than expected in that it's just the perfect size and the quality is superb. It will hold all of my cards, cash, and emergency money to boot. I was concerned if the small strap would hold the wallet closed for security. The strap is so tight I now have no concerns the wallet will open and lose any contents. A little stiff when new but I would expect the leather will soften up over time. I travel extensively and now have my replacement security wallet. If you are looking for a well built, secure travel wallet that is not to big or small this is the one for you. For the cost you just can't find a better quality leather wallet for the cost of this SBL wallet. My 3rd SBL purchase with more on the horizon.
It's a simple wallet. I don't carry much aside from my license, cards, and cash, and this was exactly what I was looking for. The cash pocket is deep with about an inch of clearance from the top of my bills, so there's some built-in privacy and room for extra storage. Every compartment is snug and secure. Bought mine in chestnut and would say the display picture is true to color, but it looks (and feels) 100 times better in real life.
Some of the earlier reviews discuss the size of this wallet: if you're looking for an ultra-slim low-profile back-pocket wallet, this isn't it. The leather is thick and sturdy, and I doubt it will lose much volume when broken in. But it's high-quality, and will definitely outlast me!
Might say more about me than the wallet, I'm not sure. But it's a quality product and the last wallet I'll ever buy and I'm only 29. I don't suspect ever having to buy another. Now, I work in Washington DC and you should see the looks I get when I bust this thing out. I never have to worry again about something falling out (cards, money, etc.). It's pretty dirn secure.
Now I'd be remiss if I didn't say it had some bulk but for someone who managed their life in fast forward, it allows me to carry the weight essentials in a well crafted, stylish alternative to some European design.
This wallet says America. That's about the best compliment I could ever give.
This wallet marks my second purchase from SBL (large DCB briefcase being the first).
Short and simple, I was in need of a wallet, where else would I look first? Going the cheap route just isn't for me anymore. Given the experience I've had with my beloved briefcase, I trust this wallet will do right by me as well.
I ordered it in tobacco, and right out of the package it was everything I expected. Rich full grain leather, firm, stiff and itching to be broken in. If you're on the fence about procuring a higher priced prize from SBL, this would be a great way to get your feet wet and both see and feel the quality that goes into Dave's leather pieces.
I ordered it a few weeks ago, just before Christmas, and have already become quite attached to it. At first, I wasn't sure the strap and I were gonna work out, but after a few days I got used to it and am glad it's there. There is plenty of space for a sensible number of cards, ID pocket, and a decent sleeve for cash and cheques.
I've no doubt it will provide me with as much satisfaction as my briefcase has. My only question is, what am I going to buy next?
I was so excited waiting for this and the quality was great and the color (dk coffee brown) BUT..... it was really not much bigger than a bi-fold, with a strap (which was stiff and hard to open ...but I like that about saddleback and knew it would be great after it breaks in. My issue was size...it just wasn't big enough for my needs. I would love to see saddleback make a size in between this and the long trifold...that would be perfect. I am keeping my front id wallet (in the same color) and will wait to see how it holds up.....I think there is a slight difference in the leather between the 2 items by how they felt.
This Classic Trifold Wallet is my new found love. IMO it is the most practical men's wallet from SBL so far, it fits perfect with my 6 CC's, 1 DL, some miscellaneous GC's and several bills, not to mention it offers a perfect tight wrap. Unlike Bifold ones, it stands out on its own design, with correct size to fit in any pocket. I have purchased all SBL wallets over the years, this now becomes my favorite and it is my EDC now, will be tossing out the rest fancy-schmancy overpriced whimpy Italian designer ones.
This wallet makes my third purchase from this company. It is the best wallet I have ever owned. It is quality leather and the design is well thought out. I have one word of warning, it is not a small wallet. This is not a con, but I did not realize how big this wallet would be. If you wear skinny jeans, this wallet is probably not for you. That said, it is not a con, just something to be aware of.
I have tried a couple of SB wallets and really they didn't work for me, I either returned them, gave them away or tossed them. This wallet however is, in my opinion, the best and most practical. It may not look like it in the picture, but it really does fit in the back pocket. I will be keeping this one and am eager to see how it holds up over time.
