    Exactly what I wanted

I had been hemming and hawing over ordering this bag for over a year. I finally pulled the trigger and couldn't be happier. I got the tobacco medium water bag. It is a gorgeous bag, top notch construction, and something I know I will have the rest of my life. I can easily pack it for a long weekend or a 2-3 day business trip and it has plenty of room. This is my 5th Saddleback purchase but not my last. Great company, great products, and great customer service.

What a beautiful hunk of leather!

    by - verified purchaser |
I struggled for a while trying to decide between this, the duffle bag and possible the front pocket backpack. Without having a store or way to compare them in person side-by-side, I finally got the "go big or go home" attitude and bought this in Tobacco Brown. I was running out of time because I had a weekend trip coming up and I really wanted my new Waterbag for this trip. Being that I ordered it on a Wednesday, I opted to pay an additional almost $50 for the 2nd day air shipping. That was my only mistake! And a costly one! It didn't arrive until the following Monday and I was broken hearted! Please keep that in mind before you pony up for UPS.

Back to the bag... Do not let "Medium" fool you. This thing is massive! I have a waxed canvas duffle bag that I measured to be 20" and I figured this would be a similar size. I was wrong! I think I can fit 3 of my old duffles into this one Waterbag! I'm actually afraid I will struggle to fill it! As everyone else states: it is gorgeous, it is built like a tank, it is a huge piece of leather, but I was slightly surprised that it looks slightly feminine if completely unfolded, standing tall with the sides sticking out. It resembles a womans tote if the sides are not tucked in. Other than that, I am impatiently waiting for my next trip so I can finally use a bag that costed as much as my first car.

Medium Waterbag - Better than Expected!

    by - verified purchaser |
Four months ago I bought the medium Waterbag in tobacco. Earlier that month I had purchased the Classic Thin Front Pocket Briefcase (medium) in chestnut, which is a work of art and is wearing very well. (During that same month I ordered a couple of belts.)

When I first received the Waterbag I was immediately impressed with the tobacco color and, of course, the glorious smell of leather. The bag is expertly constructed as is usual of Saddleback Leather products, and has noticeable substance to it. I can't stress enough the outstanding quality of this bag. I have to admit, at first I was worried that the bag would be too small for my needs. I originally selected the medium size so I can fit it in the overhead compartment on airplanes. But once I removed the insert I was able to stuff A LOT into the bag. Surprisingly, I'm still able to fit an almost-full bag into the overhead compartment. Interestingly, I had to literally punch and shove the bag in, which the bag handled without even a hiccup.

In fact, that's what impresses me most about this bag - it can take a lot of abuse. I don't purposely abuse it, but I travel extensively and sometimes I can't be gentle. No worries, this bag is built like a tank. I've drenched it in the rain, dropped it, stuffed it in a car trunk, stacked stuff on top of it, banged and scraped it along innumerable walls, railings, and other objects, etc. Nothing phases it. Everything, from the body to the straps to the rings, are all of the highest quality.

By the way, the Waterbag serves very well as a business travel bag. I use packing cubes for my "good clothes" and shoes, and stuff underwear, socks, and tee shirts (all rolled up) in the nooks and crannies. I carefully folded and placed a sport jacket at the top of the packed clothes and closed up the bag. The jacket was well protected and had few wrinkles when I arrived, which came out in a steamy shower.

If you need a versatile, strong, and stylish bag, you absolutely must get the Waterbag.

Oh - My new medium Front Pocket Backpack (tobacco) arrived just this morning. My goodness, what a beauty! Already my daughter tried to steal it this evening, and I've only had it for 6 hours. I had to let her use my Waterbag for her trip this weekend to divert her attention from the backpack. I better get my Waterbag back.

    Once again....

    by - verified purchaser |
....I had the good fortune of purchasing a another water bag, though even more fortunately I think it may have been the last of the discontinued small size. What a great carry on (and carry all)! Lots of compliments from strangers, which is a little odd. I'm not so comfortable with envy, but it may make you folks at SBL happy that your work is eye catching and enviable - many of the positive comments came from people who were themselves carrying "other leather" bags.
My first water bag was a medium size. It's a great bag too, and matches nicely as a carryon/all with the small suitcase I also purchased. They are best for traveling with my wife, who carries far more than I do on a trip. They are both in the beautiful chestnut color. The new small water bag is black, and holds just enough for even a 3-4 day trip, as long as what I'm carrying can tolerate being rolled or folded closely. Simply great bags, and masterfully made. Heirloom quality....!

    Great bag

    by - verified purchaser |
I have owned this bag (size Med, color tobacco brown) since 6/12.
I love the 2 optional rectangular inserts, although I use the higher side one most of the time.
This bag packs well. This size holds quite a bit. I like the closure options. I can use the bag as a carry by removing my clothes and the insert quickly to make a walk around bag. (Watch Dave's Video). This increases the versatility.
I use it as a car bag or a carry on. I am considering adapting the bag to try to make it a functional camera bag.
I would not check this luggage as it has no lock capabilities and I am a little paranoid about that. The lock is a personal issue, but I suppose otherwise would be a great airline bag.
I plan to get other sizes as my needs change.
    Once again a great bag.

    Dark Coffee Brown Medium Waterbag

    by |
This is the second SLC product I've purchased, the first being the Large DCB Laptop bag in 2009. When I made that purchase I knew what I was getting, a lifelong laptop bag that had no compromises in workmanship or materials. I've received more compliments on that bag than anything else I've ever owned. The Medium Waterbag is just incredible. I can't wait until it's as worn in and weathered as my other bag, because they really do get better with age. I look forward to purchasing the hard luggage suitcases in the very near future and frequent the website weekly to see if something new is coming out. Dave - Would love a laptop sleeve for my 13 inch slim laptop to go with everything else I have should there be considerations for new products.

    I'm in love!

    by - verified purchaser |
I absolutely love my medium Waterbag. It's extremely versatile - it can pack as little or as much as you want, and if you take the pigskin insert out, it doesn't weigh that much either. It quickly builds up character as the unlined leather stretches and bends, making the bag look more rugged and beautiful as it ages. I haven't been able to personally take it with me on a trip yet, but my wife just used it for a weekend trip and immediately got a compliment from her friend. I can't wait to use it myself, but even as a bag just standing there on a sideboard as a part of the interior design, it just fits in beautifully. This is definitely not the bag you'll want to store in a closet when it's not in use!

    Item #3 and going!

    by - verified purchaser |
Got my bag today and couldn't be more thrilled. This is to replace an inferior suede carry on (thanks for the leather education Dave) and it will definitely do the trick. Not only does it make me feel more confident that my bag won't fall apart (like mine did on a rented motorcycle on a California trip) but the square bottom is perfect for a luggage rack. The backpack feature is perfect since I can wear one bag (my front pocket backpack) then strap this over it, or crossbody, depending on how much I have. The add'l d rings will clip an errant helmet and keep me sane until I can put some things in the hotel room. Im envisioniong some awesome trips this upcoming spring! Even more exciting is the pigskin liner that makes carrying fishing rods and a cooler full of catfish a perfectly reasonable task for this bag, tote style. Of all four of my new digs, the versatility of this bag is the one I'm most excited about. Perfect for my family trip packing and my solo rough and rugged and wet trips alike.

Like the burl in a beautiful piece of wood...natures beauty is astounding!

Just got my medium water bag in the tobacco color. I was nicely surprised at the capacity available yet will fold and compact if not needed. Just what I wanted. Small enough for an overnight or roomy enough for a weeks worth of clothes if needed.

And that new leather smell! As a kid I worked in my grand dad's boot repair shop on weekends. The smell brought back many fond memories. I guess that's where I learned to appreciate quality leather and craftsmanship....that's what Dave & SBL provide.

My only disappointment is that I didn't get a keychain to show off my tastes when my my bag isn't with me.

    tough as nails

    by - verified purchaser |
Received my medium waterbag as an early Christmas present about a month ago. Almost immediately took it on a three week tour of Western Canada. I practically live on a tour bus, but am in and out of hotels constantly. It easily held around a week and a half worth of clothes. This bag's modular capabilities make it great for living out of on trips. Easily the most convenient piece of luggage I could ever imagine. I sincerely thought I was a pro at living on the road, but this bag takes it to a whole new level. The only con would be that my life is too easy, now. It hardly feels like work any more.

    Everyone should own a waterbag

    by |
I struggled between a classic duffle and the waterbag. I went wild and based on one of Dave's reviews saying the waterbag was his favorite I got it Remove the box it comes with and you can roll the bag up for the small airplanes that gate check luggage and fit overhead. Also you can load this bag up with over a weeks worth of clothes and toys more than a hardcover roller bag. The last carry on bag I will ever buy.

This bag is a great bag and tough as nails! I travel a lot and I am always being asked about my bag. Which is fine except when you want to get out of customs at the airport. This bag is overbuilt to perfection. Hello Dave, I WOULD ALSO SECOND THE IDEA OF A FREQUENT FLYER DISCOUNT.

    Another water bag

    by - verified purchaser |
I purchased the small water bag in Tobacco brown. I own the medium size.
I bought the small because discontinued and I felt this would provide an alternate size of carry on.
This size is great for smaller loads and works great as a medical bag and smaller carry. Backpack conversion feels ok.
I own the backpack, front pocket backpack and duffel.
I really like the small water bag for a custom fit between the bigger water bag and duffel or backpack.
Cannot go wrong. My wife says I own too many bags. What does she know. (see Dave's advice about explaining to your wife)

Only travel bag I'll ever need...

    by - verified purchaser |
Bought an original (medium) Waterbag in 2010 while planning a European trip. I wanted something sharp, durable and convenient. When I found it my wife called me 'crazy". When I received it she sniffed. When I used it she put things in it. I have used it for 25+trips/weekends each year and my wife gave me the front-pocket backpack this past Christmas - she said she 'didn't know why but they seem like good products'. I, now, have a number of dark coffee brown pieces and the waterbag is simply the single best thing I have ever owned. I don't think I have ever owned anything (suit, car, anything) that was better quality or had a better design. And it's just cool.
Oh and the service from Saddleback lives up to the bag's quality!
I suppose I should have just written "buy the dang bag!"

    Phenominal Bag

    by - verified purchaser |
Let me start off by saying this was my first SBL purchase and it lured me in. I bought the Large bag in Chestnut. I have taken this bag everywhere from road trips to Texas, Train trips to Napa and Ferry rides to Catalina Islands and have received numerous comments. I am an active duty Marine and was arriving for duty today and a civilian where I was checking-in was almost speechless when he saw the bag. It was quite funny seeing how he swooned over the bag. In fact, a couple of other Marines in the area were making fun of him. In any case, it is a conversation piece as well as a work horse. I have loaded it until it was difficult to get on my back...and it never waivered. My only regret is the color. I have five other SBL items all in DCB (that is my preference) and only wish I had made my initial purchase in DCB. I face a delimma now; do I replace it with the DCB? With the travels I have had with this bag it's almost not an option...not that it has history.

Buy this bag and you will be very satisfied!

    Great Bag

Thanks for the fast delivery of my medium size waterbag . This is truly the heavy duty quality leather bag they claim.

The overall quality and design is very well done. The leather is very nice and looks perfect. I have the medium size and it's already quite heavy. Both in a good and a bad sense: From my point of view a large size waterbag fully loaded would be better suited if you only have to carry it over very short distances. Like to your car or the next trolley but not over big airports. The medium sized waterbag is good to carry while walking, especially in the backpack mode.

Opening and closing it feels more like preparing a horse for a ride with those heavy leather straps. Some good old school leatherware. I like it and I can recommend it.

    Dave's Deals

I just received the large waterbag (tobacco), and I couldn't be more pleased. I bought it from Dave's Deals (10% discount), and I have no idea why it was discounted. I own several SBL products, and this discounted bag looks no different than anything else that I've purchased.

The bag itself looks, smells, and feels great. I will be using it as my primary travel bag for mission trips, etc. Can't wait to try it out.

I love Large Dark Coffee Brown water bag!
Wherever I travel I get comments on it.
If you plan on using it as a carry-on I would recommend the medium instead.
I have flown a ton with it as a a carry-on, but I usually have to sweet talk a gate agent to get them to look the other way for my very slightly oversized piece of carry-on(don't try to put it in the sizing bin, it wont fit).
It travels every week with me in my car, a touch big for me as a true overnight bag.

    Awesome Bag...

    by - verified purchaser |
I never write reviews and I'm not going to write a book here, but I have to say that the Waterbag (medium) is an awesome bag that will probably last for the rest of my life. The quality, workmanship and detail is just A1. I'm a very satisfied customer with all of Saddleback Leather products. I have the MacBook Pro sleeve and the iPad case and I will be back to buy more from Saddleback Leather. The products are not cheap but as they say you pay for what you get. I can't imagine a better made bag and the quality of material used to make it.
Now the reason why I bought the Waterbag is for numerous reasons. I will use it not only for travel but to keep my camera (DSLR) safe and dust free while driving and looking for things to shoot. Well let me explain. Before I kept my DSLR and 70-200mm lens on the front passenger seat so that I would have a quick access to my camera. Dust and sudden stops were just a big problem for me. Dust is self explanatory and sudden stops would send my camera flying off the seat. Well now with the Waterbag on the seat, nicely strapped, all I have to do is put my camera in it and fold the sides over and my problems are over. The DSLR stays dust free and not a chance that it will fly off the seat to the floor while braking.
Thanks Dave for making such quality products. Keep up the good work and craftsmanship, hope your sales soar through the roof.

I'm "Leatherbound" From City to Ranch!

    by - verified purchaser |
I bought the medium "Waterbag" in tobacco after weeks of researching Saddleback Leather's website, and watching every YouTube video review I could find. Like many of you, I was torn between several models. My research included: "Side Pocket Duffel," and the "Utility Duffel" models.

When I considered my use of carry-on luggage, or weekend adventure bags, I very rarely get into the bag once it is packed. Nobody on the plane wants to be "that guy" who keeps getting up and messing around with the overhead luggage. I usually keep it secure until I arrive at my destination, so I didn't have a big need for accessing side pockets. This is true for road trips as well as air travel. I was quite intrigued by the concept of having a bag that would help to limit: dust, dirt, sand, moisture, and other unwanted environmental elements.

I am able to pack: three to four days worth of business and casual attire, dress shoes and running shoes, exercise clothing, a shaving kit, and still have plenty of room to close it securely. I use packing cubes to keep things organized, and it really makes a difference with efficiently packing the bag and avoiding wrinkled clothing.

With a folding compact luggage cart, I travel with this and a matching large tobacco "Front Pocket Briefcase" with ease. It's a great pair of products to get me through a business week in the city, traveling through airports and other cities, and then out to the ranch for enjoying the weekends. I absolutely love both of these beautiful and tough leather products that serve me well, no matter my location.

    I Disagree

    by |
I got the medium waterbag (finally after much hinting) as a gift. The video says it "May" cause envy. The word "may" is totally misused. I love this thing. It gets compliments from other travellers and even the air crew.

Most of my trips are weekend trips where I only need a carryon. This fits the bill perfectly. The expandable size sometimes is a pain as I pack it up too much and with regulators, dive lights and cameras, it becomes to heavy, so I have to give something to my wife.

It is sturdy, I have misused it as we take it on diving trips (only 2 so far), and while it isnt water proof, I used Chamberlans #3 on it and it has kept my stuff dry through the odd splash and drip.

The tobacco color also looks great and any abuse adds to the travelled look of the bag.

    Thanks for a great bag.

    A work of art

    by |
I've had my eye on this bag for about a year now. With an African trip coming up I felt it was prime time for a new purchase. Sadly, both sizes of the Tobacco Waterbag were out of stock. While on the page ready to purchase the Utility Duffel, I thought, eh what the heck, I'll check the status of the Waterbag today just to roll the dice, you never know. Lo and behold, the medium was in stock in tobacco flavor! I immediately maneuvered a remove-and-add and waited a few days for it to arrive. This is my second SBL purchase, the first being a DCB Thin Front Pocket Briefcase, which I adore. The tobacco is gorgeous, and the build exudes superlative quality. I have no doubt this will fit over a week's worth of clothes and sundries. I'm also confident that it will last a century--it's a rugged piece that is sure to endure years of use and abuse. The multiple configurations and size make for a very versatile piece that will be your favorite bag in no time. Stop waiting and deliberating, it's worth the extra money, you'll never need another similarly sized bag in your life! Also, it's true, just looking at it is enough to give me a dose of wanderlust. I'm in love!

    Medium DCB Waterbag

    by - verified purchaser |
Just received a medium Dark Chocolate Brown Water bag, it was a Dave's Deal (I think sometimes they put stuff on Dave's Deals just to sell it faster as I've purchased many items and could only find a slight flaw in one of them). First I bought a side pocket duffel but it was just too bulky (I wanted something easy to carry on), then I bought a utility duffel, it's a little smaller but I don't care much for the rigid shape and the straps aren't long enough to carry cross body. Finally I decided to get the medium waterbag ( was holding off because it cost quite a bit more than the others) It's exactly what I was looking for, wish I would have buckled down and bought it first. The leather and build quality are top notch (of course), the bag is very supple and carry's more like a traditional duffel, I like to wear it cross body and it's very comfortable. The removable handle is comfortable and well thought out. The only thing I wish was different is the liner, I guess they've updated it from the one's in the pictures, the liner now is only the bottom and two ends, the old liner looked to be bottom and four sides like the dry bag. I highly recommend the water bag.

After many seasons of coveting this damned bag, I made sure that Santa got it for me this past Christmas. What a wonderful piece of leatherwork! BTW, you're right about the heirs. They have already started negotiations about who gets Dad's new bag after I croak. Well done Dave!
Now I've got to give myself permission for one of the medium size waterbags

    Awesome, functional Bag

    by - verified purchaser |
I bought the large DCB waterbag for a few reasons...1) it looks way cool, 2) I wanted something more flexible & easier to use than the side-pocket duffel, 3) I was a big fan of the fact that it came from a single piece of leather.

It is huge inside. My 6-year old said he thinks I could put him inside & close it up...nope we didn't try it. The large also comes with a 9-inch high insert in addition to the 6-inch version. Both of the inserts make the bag heavier...but do add structural support. I really see me just filling the bag without the inserts & cranking the straps down.

I am slightly concerned about checking it at the airport & scuffing it up or having TSA or the airlines dude steal it. I am considering finding a super cheap, large cloth duffel to go over the water bag when I check it.

It also has two D-rings on one end similar to the medium...but it doesn't turn into a backpack like the medium. So you can use those D-rings to lash extra gear, devise a way to attach the bag to a wheeled, collapsible cart, etc. I am sure I'll come up with my own use for them.

As mentioned above, I originally got the side-pocket duffel...which is well made & cool too. It just wasn't flexible for carrying all kinds of items easily. It was also too heavy; the waterbag without the inserts is lighter. I ended up turning the duffel into a car supply gear bag in the back of my Shelby GT500.

Yep, it is muy expensive. That is why I waited until I saw the one I wanted on Dave's Deals. Heck, if you buy right now you'll get free shipping which will save some add'l coins.

My overall recommendation is to get it, use the heck out of it & don't look back.

I grew up in Oregon near the Deschutes River, and so we’d often go white water rafting over the river’s world class rapids. I was always really impressed with the dry bags I’d see along the way. If you’re not familiar with a dry bag, you put your camera and wallet and other water-sensitive stuff in there, roll and seal the opening, and the bag keeps everything dry while you’re floating down the river. Even if your raft flips over, everything inside stays dry. I always thought it was the coolest thing.

So, once I started designing more bags, I had a huge desire to create something with a watertight rolling closure. That desire, combined with the inspiration from an old leather bag I saw in a Tunisian medina on the edge of the Sahara, brought about this bag. So, here’s my tribute to the dry bag and the dust bag; the Waterbag.
